AbstractNuclear safety depends largely on the competence and competencies of the employees in the sector. While this is not a new subject, numerous current and future changes once again bring into question these competencies and their management. In recent years, a number of studies have demonstrated the limitations of the managerial approach to competencies, in particular their failure to take into account the collective dimension of said competencies and the contextual aspects of their implementation. AbstractOne of the main challenges in teaching of experimentation is effective assessment, specifically, identifying appropriate assessment instruments and identifying aspects being assessed. In an effort to facilitate appropriate use of assessment tools and to identify gaps in our arsenal of assessments related to experimentation, we conducted a survey of assessments of different aspects of experimentation currently used in undergraduate biology courses and categorized the assessment items using the framework of the Basic Competencies of Biological Experimentation. We limited our review to assessments that are freely available, documented in the biology education literature, and focus on undergraduate biology. The assessments we reviewed varied in the number of Basic Competencies they covered, ranging from a minimum of two and to as many as all seven Competence Areas. Among the Competence Areas, Plan and Conclude have the greatest coverage, with 27 and 24 of the 30 assessments containing related items, respectively. Conversely, Identify and Conduct are poorly covered by existing assessments. We identified gaps within existing instruments as they relate to assessing experimentation and within the Basic Competencies of Biological Experimentation framework itself. We offer recommendations to biology instructors and researchers on the use of existing assessments and on ways to improve assessment of biological experimentation.

During the second half of the 20th century, there was a shift in focus in second language acquisition research from linguistic competence to communicative and pragmatic competence (Hymes, 1972; Canale &amp; Swain, 1980; Canale, 1983; Bachman, 1990; Bachman &amp; Palmer, 1996; Usó-Juan &amp; Martínez-Flor, 2006). This paper is concerned with lexical competence in the study of Italian for academic purposes, notably learned words formed with Greek/Latin elements. To improve and check receptive knowledge of such “difficult” vocabulary both by native and by L2 learners, a number of exercises are made available, and can be actually done and evaluated, at https://esploradizionari.i-learn.unito.it/. This is a technology enhanced learning environment integrating Moodle with the Automatic Assessment System Maple®, a software of Canadian origin already successfully used for teaching STEM disciplines. The specific features of the exercises are discussed, along with early results by Italophone and non-Italophone learners.

This chapter instrumentalises an area of foreign language teaching that is often neglected in translation programmes’ curricula, namely the contrastive grammar of specialised languages. More specifically, this chapter addresses the incorporation of the contrastive grammar of legal English and Czech into an English grammar classroom. First, the rationale behind such an approach is presented with reference to the existing legal translation competence models and curricular design. Second, a number of linguistic phenomena encountered in English legal texts, and possibly neglected in English language classes for translators, are discussed from a socio-constructivist training perspective, and a series of exercises is presented that may be used, or adapted for use, by the instructors of such courses to help them cover these specific aspects of English grammar.

As a result, the obstacles in technology ownership and access put a group of learners from a low socioeconomic status and minorities in a disadvantaged position and prevent them from engaging in learning experiences. Indirectly, these learners also struggle to develop digital competencies due to their limited access to technology-rich environments. This chapter elaborates on the characteristics of learners in open, distance, and digital education environments with respect to their technology ownership and access, presents a number of competency frameworks, and discusses how the competencies included in the frameworks apply to open, distance, and digital education. The chapter opens with the role of technology in new learning environments and how technology ownership and access vary among certain demographics as well as developed, developing, and underdeveloped countries. The introduction is followed by learner characteristics with respect to varying technology access and ownership among demographics and the implications of technology ownership and access for open, distance, and digital education.
