Abstract:
In this opening chapter on the epidemiology and risk factors for stroke, the ‘size of the problem’ in public health terms both in the United Kingdom and worldwide is set out. Incidence, prevalence, and mortality of stroke are discussed. Epidemiological terms and definitions as applied to stroke care are reviewed and illustrated, including absolute and relative risk reduction and numbers needed to treat. This chapter also discusses aetiological subtyping of stroke which represents a syndrome caused by multiple different underlying pathologies. It ends with a comprehensive review of the major an

Gay dating platform–related blackmail has emerged as a key form of victimisation in recent years (see Dasgupta, 2021). This briefing paper explains the anatomy of blackmail on gay dating platforms: the contexts in which it takes place and the two forms it takes. It also illustrates that, in addition to perpetrators, multiple technological and sociopolitical factors play a key role in facilitating these crimes. This paper draws from semi-structured interviews conducted with gay dating platform users in India. The data come from a larger project conducted by the author for their PhD, which recei

Abstract:
The low overall post-operative mortality rate conceals the existence of a sub-group of high-risk patients, which accounts for over 80% of post-operative deaths. Age, co-morbid disease, limited functional capacity, and an emergency presentation for major surgery are hallmarks risk. The magnitude, duration, and consequences of post-operative morbidity are determined by a complex interplay between the indication for surgery, the resulting tissue injury, and patient factors. A number of methods including risk scoring and cardiopulmonary exercise testing can be used to identify the high-risk group.

Risk factors in young-onset stroke include both traditional and unconventional as well as both chronic and temporal ones. In young patients, unconventional risk factors such as oral contraceptive use, antiphospholipid antibodies, genetic thrombophilia, acute infections, illicit drug use, and migraine may play a greater role than in elderly patients. However, recent large studies have challenged this traditional view suggesting that young adult stroke would occur mostly due to such unconventional risk factors. These studies have shown a high prevalence of in particular modifiable behavioural ri

The relationship between low birth weight (LBW) and subsequent increased risk of hypertension and renal disease in humans is now well established. The initial hypothesis suggested that an adverse intrauterine environment, reflected by LBW, would impact renal development, resulting in a low nephron number and predisposition to hypertension and renal disease. Studies in various populations have shown a direct correlation between birth weight and nephron number, and in infants, nephron numbers are reduced in those of LBW. Among Caucasian and Australian Aboriginal adults, lower nephron numbers are

Basic number processing skills in individuals with reading difficulties (RD) are intact. However, children and adults with RD show clear difficulties in arithmetic, in particular in retrieving known answers from long-term memory (fact retrieval). Fact retrieval deficits are associated with weaknesses in phonological awareness, the ability to segment and manipulate speech sounds. The left angular gyrus has been suggested as a site of neurological overlap between RD and fact retrieval deficits. While there is evidence for an involvement of the angular gyrus in fact retrieval in adults, the evide

Primary liver cancer is one of the most commonly occurring cancers globally, and is the second most common cause of cancer death worldwide. There are two major histologic forms of primary liver cancer: hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma. It is a rapidly and almost uniformly fatal disease, yet there is already sufficient knowledge about its major risk factors, many of which are modifiable, to make primary prevention effective. Primary liver cancer is one of the first common human cancer that was found to have an infectious etiology, with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis

Abstract:
In epidemiology, risk refers to the likelihood, or in statistical language probability, of an individual in a defined population developing a disease or other adverse health problem. The prime measures of disease frequency, including probability of outcomes, in epidemiology are incidence rates and prevalence proportions. The incidence rate is the number of new cases in relation to a population, time, and place. Prevalence proportion measures all disease or a risk factor in a population, either at a particular time (point prevalence) or over a time period (period prevalence, lifetime prevalence
