Abstract:
Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) with sizes ranging from 2 to 20 nm in diameter represent an important class of artificial nanostructured materials, since the NP size is comparable to the size of a magnetic domain. They have potential applications in data storage, catalysis, permanent magnetic nanocomposites, and biomedicine. To begin with, a brief overview on the background of Fe-based bimetallic NPs and their applications for data-storage and catalysis was presented in Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, L10-ordered FePt NPs with high coercivity were directly prepared from a novel bimetallic acetylenic alt

The closure term is constructed based on the variational multiscale framework. To model the closure term, we use d

Abstract:
In this study, we use a hazard-based modeling as an alternative statistical framework to time series methods as applied to climate data. Data collected from the Kentucky Mesonet will be used to study the distributional properties of the duration of high and low-energy wind events relative to an arbitrary threshold. Our objectiveswere to fit bathtub models proposed in literature, propose a generalized bathtub model, apply these models to Kentucky Mesonet data, and make recommendations as to feasibility of wind power generation. Using two different thresholds (1.8 and 10 mph respectively), resul

Abstract:
This thesis describes an observation function for a dynamic data driven application system designed to produce short range forecasts of the behavior of a wildland fire. The thesis presents an overview of the atmosphere-fire model, which models the complex interactions between the fire and the surrounding weather and the data assimilation module which is responsible for assimilating sensor information into the model. Observation plays an important role in data assimilation as it is used to estimate the model variables at the sensor locations. Also described is the implementation of a portable a

Abstract:
This thesis provides a novel investigation into rainfall-runoff processes occurring within a unique two-tiered depth-driven overland flow physical modelling environment, as well as within a numerical model context where parameterisation and DEM/building resolution influences have been investigated using an innovative de-coupled methodology. Two approaches to simulating urban rainfall-runoff responses were used. Firstly, a novel, 9 m2 physical modelling environment consisting of a: (i) a low-cost rainfall simulator component able to simulate consistent, uniformly distributed rainfall events of

Abstract:
Medical image segmentation is a challenging problem, and is studied widely. In this thesis, the main goal is to develop automatic segmentation techniques of human mimic muscles and to compare them with ground truth data in order to determine the method that provides best segmentation results. The segmentation methods are based on Bayesian with Markov Random Field (MRF) and Level Set (Active Contour) models. Proposed segmentation methods are multi step processes including preprocess, main muscle segmentation step and post process, and are applied on three types of data: Magnetic Resonance Imagi
