Seit 20 Jahren verzeichnet Christian Edmond Dekesel (Gent/Belgien) in aller Welt numismatische Literatur des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts. –9. Abstract:
This thesis considers the use of numismatic imagery in the Byzantine Empire during the period 610-867, with its main focus centred in the period 685-842. Though charting the iconographic trends and changes on the coinage of the period and the possible reasons behind them is the principal raison d’être of the thesis, it also tackles methodological issues such as the use and abuse of dies studies and ways of determining who decided what images appeared on coins. The main body of the text is arranged chronologically with the methodological issues appearing throughout. Exceptions to this format a

Abstract:
Coins have played an important role in the construction of narratives and models of late Iron Age society in Britain. Distribution maps, in particular, have been employed to identify the supposed tribal structure of the island in the pre-Roman period, which is thought to have survived the Roman conquest to be preserved in the Roman civitas administration system. The continued prominence of the broad stylistic categories that structure all numismatic classifications, and which are often seen to support the projection of Romano-British civitates back into the pre-Roman period, has ensured that w

Despite nearly two centuries of fascination in the scholarly world with the history of Sogdian culture there are still many under-researched areas. In particular, the history of the dissemination and enculturation of Christianity among Sogdians is one such area, which despite material and textual witness has not been studied autonomously. Instead, it has been incorporated into a broader discourse of the geographical-historical spread and enculturation of Christianity into the Central Asian landmass. Abstract:
This is a methodological study that uses representations of arms and armour on coins of Alexander I and Perdikkas II as case studies in order to assess the value of visual analysis in numismatics. Each coinage is examined in three parts: a review of production dates for coins precedes a typological analysis of depicted arms and armour, which is then used in a critical investigation of potential meanings within current theoretical discourses. Context is a key variable in the creation of meaning and the understanding of relevant coin types bears heavily upon the circumstances of their production

The messages in the imagery on Byzantine coins, although often neglected by scholars, were a key means of projecting imperial power. Emperors could project power via dress, ceremonial, and displays, but these methods would not have reached all subjects. Byzantine coins had the advantage of reaching all subjects, as the Byzantine economy was fundamentally monetized. Military symbols (figures, dress, and weapons), whose study has been rather overlooked, formed an important part of this imagery.
