Abstract:
This book is the outcome of a new method of investigating the life experiences of health personnel engaged in paediatric oncology. It brings together the results of individual interviews with each member of the medical, nursing and technical staff in the Paediatric Oncology Department of the University Polyclinic of Padua and the Giannina Gaslini Institute of Genoa. The interviews, prepared using an open questionnaire format, were carried out by qualified personnel, after which the results were analysed and illustrated to the group of health care professionals involved. The two experiences, which are extremely significant in view of the distinction of the two centres of excellence involved, are compared and discussed with a view to making an interesting contribution to the debate on the delicate issues of bioethics implicated in problems connected with the end of life during the developmental stage.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter a nurse/sociologist and an historian discuss how their academic backgrounds and disciplinary perspectives shaped both what they saw and what they overlooked during the process of conducting ethnographic research for this project. For both authors, doing ethnography was a new endeavor, although each had published on long-term residential care within their own disciplines. The chapter highlights how an historical gaze focused one author’s attention toward the significance of location, sense of place, cultural memory, and origin stories in writing fieldnotes on the nursing homes he visited. The nurse/sociologist concentrated on issues surrounding the gendered division of labor, health and safety, workplace accountability, and differing emphases upon social as opposed to medical care. Over time, through conversations with team members and each other, their fieldnotes increasingly incorporated shared perspectives on the significance of location, heritage, workplace practices and tensions between social and medical care.

Brooks, Jane. Negotiating nursing. Manchester University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.7228/manchester/9781526119063.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Negotiating nursing explores how the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (Q.A.s) salvaged men within the sensitive gender negotiations of what should and could constitute nursing work and where that work could occur. The book argues that the Q.A.s, an entirely female force during the Second World War, were essential to recovering men physically, emotionally and spiritually from the battlefield and for the war, despite concerns about their presence on the frontline. The book maps the developments in nurses’ work as the Q.A.s created a legitimate space for themselves in war zones and established nurses’ position as the expert at the bedside. Using a range of personal testimony the book demonstrates how the exigencies of war demanded nurses alter the methods of nursing practice and the professional boundaries in which they had traditionally worked, in order to care for their soldier-patients in the challenging environments of a war zone. Although they may have transformed practice, their position in war was highly gendered and it was gender in the post-war era that prevented their considerable skills from being transferred to the new welfare state, as the women of Britain were returned to the home and hearth. The aftermath of war may therefore have augured professional disappointment for some nursing sisters, yet their contribution to nursing knowledge and practice was, and remains, significant.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter covers the first stage of labour, from onset through to latent and active phases. It describes the physiology and diagnosis of the first stage of labour and gives the definitions of low- and high-risk women. It considers birth in both hospital and home settings and the current recommendations for the place of birth. The basic care and support of low-risk women during both the latent and active first stage of labour are described for both home and hospital settings. Mobility and optimum positions during the first stage, labouring in water, and current guidance regarding maternal nutrition and monitoring vital signs are discussed. Guidance on the assessment of progress by observation, abdominal and vaginal examination, monitoring fetal well-being, and record-keeping on the partogram are also considered.

Threat, Charissa J. The Politics of Intimate Care. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252039201.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter traces the early evolution of nursing from the mid-nineteenth century through the early twentieth century, with particular emphasis on how nursing care became both gendered and racialized in civilian society. Focusing on the history of the Army Nurse Corps (ANC), it explores the relationship between the military and civilian populace to illuminate trends in nursing practices, debates about work, and concerns about war taking place in the larger civil society. It also examines how war and military nursing needs shaped the evolution of the modern nursing profession and how nursing became embroiled in the politics of intimate care, along with the implications for gender roles and race relations that permeated social relationships and interactions in civilian society. The chapter points to the Civil War as the transformative moment in the history of nursing in the United States, moving nursing from an unpaid obligation to a paid occupation. Finally, it discusses the impact of the introduction of formal nurse training during the last quarter of the nineteenth century on African American nurses.
