Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which executive nurses participate in strategic planning for their institutions, and the extent to which these executive nurses utilize the strategic planning process for their nursing departments. The effect of ownership, size, and educational level of the executive nurse on the extent of participation in institutional strategic planning and the utilization of the strategic planning process for their nursing departments was also examined. The population of the study included all executive nurses employed in short-term, nonmiltary, Virginia hospitals, which were members of the Virginia Hospital Association. Questionnaires were mailed to 114 executive nurses, 60 returned the survey with a response rate of 53 percent. The 60 hospitals included: 14 small institutions (< 99 beds), constituting 24 percent of the sample; 30 medium-sized institutions (100-399 beds), comprising 58 percent of the sample; and 11 large institutions (> 400 beds), constituting 18 percent of the sample. There were 48 not-for-profit institutions constituting 80 percent of the sample, and 12 for profit (investor owned) comprising 20 percent of the sample: and 11 large institutions (> 400 beds), constituting 18 percent of the sample. There were 48 not-for-profit institutions constituting 80 percent of the sample, and 12 for-profit (investor owned) comprising 20 percent of the sample. The typical nurse executive in this study held a master's degree, had 21-25 total years of nursing experience of which one to five years was at the executive level, and had been in his/her present position one to five years. Slightly over half of nursing departments had long-range plans covering three years or less. The majority of long-range plans for the department of nursing were formulated by the strategic planning process. Participation in hospital strategic planning was influenced by the institution's size and the nurse executive's educational level. Utilization of the strategic planning process for the department of nursing was influenced by neither size nor ownership, only the executive nurse's educational level.

Abstract:
Seventy percent of hospital leaders report a lack of succession planning practices as an organizational strategy to mitigate the risk of talent loss and for addressing nursing shortages. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore succession planning strategies 6 hospital managers used to reduce the shortage of nurse leaders in 2 Hampton Roads, Virginia hospitals. The conceptual framework was Rothwell's succession planning model for understanding the succession planning strategies the hospital managers used to reduce the shortage of nurse leaders. After conducting semistructured interviews, and reviewing supporting hospitals' documents, techniques of compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding were used for data analysis. Methodological triangulation was also to validate the findings and ensure the trustworthiness of interpretations. The principal themes emerging from the analysis were identifying organizational staffing needs, providing advancement opportunities, identifying potential leaders, and preparing nurses for leadership positions. The potential pathways for effecting beneficial social change are contributing to leaders' knowledge of succession planning strategies to reduce nurse leader vacancies and contributing to the welfare of society by improving the continuity of healthcare services for patients and communities.

Abstract:
A non-experimental, explorative, descriptive, quantitative study was undertaken. The purpose was to explore and describe the views of preceptors and preceptees regarding the fulfillment of the role of the preceptor in selected clinical nursing practice settings in the Botswana context. The study included 72 preceptors and 200 nursing students/preceptees who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study. A questionnaire was used to collect data. Data was analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of this study indicated that there were numerous constraints that interfered with the preceptor role in accompaniment of the preceptee. These constraints included the lack of desirable characteristics and time to plan learning opportunities, inadequate use of teaching strategies and inadequate knowledge on preceptee evaluation. Recommendations were stated for improvements in the future role of the preceptor in clinical practice settings Limitations of this study were also highlighted.

Kadango, Alice. "Preconception strategies to improve maternal and newborn outcomes in Blantyre Urban, Malawi." Thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/23997.

Full text
Abstract:
The study was done to assess the information and care the men and women have on PCC and develop strategies that could improve provision of PCC that could advance maternal and newborn outcome after pregnancy in Malawi. Most for the interventions to improve pregnancy outcome are done too late in Malawi but there is an opportunity during preconception period to plan to improve the health of the couple so that the goal of a healthy mother and baby is attained. The objectives were to: explore and describe the knowledge men and women of childbearing age have on HTSP and PCC, identify variables that influence men and women to acquire appropriate knowledge on PCC and finally to develop strategies that could assist provision of PCC in developing countries like Malawi. Adverse issues that affect the couples could be addressed promptly before the occurrence of pregnancy. A quantitative non-experimental descriptive-correlation design method was used to determine the knowledge men and women of childbearing have on HTSP and PCC. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 300 men and women of childbearing age. The target population for the study was prospective parents that are couples that have an intention to conceive, women of childbearing age that could be accessible at family planning, gyneacological and under-five clinics between the ages of 18-35 years. A questionnaire was adapted from a study conducted in Texas. SPSS version 20 was used to analyse the data by generating frequencies and chi- square. Kruskal Wallis test was used to determine relationship between variables and knowledge on preconception care. The constructs examined were psychological preparation, reproductive health care and the physical care that are provided to ensure a healthy pregnancy outcome. With a 100% response rate the findings indicated a gap of information and care on PCC.Services on PCC were not available in the clinics which indicated a great need to empower health care providers on PCC that could reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rate. The findings were used to develop relevant preconception strategies that would assist health providers to give PCC that would improve maternal and newborn outcomes in Malawi.

Abstract:
This paper introduces a strategy to accomplish pick-and-place operations for a six-degrees-of-freedom (6-DOF) robotic arm attached to a wheeled mobile robot. This research work is part of a bigger project in developing a robotic-assisted nursing to be used in medical settings. The significance of this project relies on the increasing demand for elderly and disabled skilled care assistance which nowadays has become insufficient. Several methods were implemented to make a 6-DOF manipulator capable of performing pick-and-place operations. This paper presents an approach for solving the inverse kinematics problem and planning collision-free paths. An Iterative Inverse Kinematics method (IIK) was introduced to find multiple configurations for the manipulator along a given path. The IIK method takes advantage of a specific geometric characteristic of the manipulator, in which several joints share a common plane. Ten different scenarios with different number and pattern of obstacles were used to verify the efficiency of a path planning algorithm introduced here. Other methods, also implemented in the current project, which describe the manipulator and its capabilities, are presented elsewhere [1]. Overall results confirmed the efficiency of the implemented methods for performing pick-and-place operations for a 6-DOF manipulator.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Despite rapid economic growth, stunting affects one third of the children under five population in Indonesia. The Government of Indonesia (GoI) realizing the problem, established the National Strategy to Accelerate Stunting Prevention as a national priority program for 2017 to 2021. The GoI plans to maximize the use of resources, policies, and programs that encompasses nutrition-specific and sensitive interventions directed to the first 100 days of life. This study aimed to explore the extent of program planning, budgeting, and implementation related to stunting prevention at district and village level as well as to understand the challenges presented to converge intervention. Subjects and Method: A case study with ecological approach was conducted in 10 villages from five districts in Indonesia. The study method included focus group discussions with 70 district officials and 100 village representatives, interviews with 12 key informants from district planning agency, document analysis, and reflective journaling. The data were reported descriptively. Results: Most head districts, officials from relevant departments and village leaders committed to stunting prevention following the vice president decree of stunting as a national priority. As a result, programs and budget were in place and local initiatives to prevent stunting were on the rise. Despite the commitment, many expressed ambivalences and disregarded the issue as a mere short stature (genetic variation). Thus, problems related to efficiency, coverage, and sustainability persists as maintaining motivation among staffs were difficult. In some settings, the situation was exacerbated by factors such as high financial dependency, misconception, and poor gender relation. Conclusion: The policy and programs to control stunting among children in Indonesia are in place. However, challenges occur due to the complexity in governance system as well as lack of political will. Better communication and cooperation are essential for well implemented policies.
