Lyme disease (LD) is a tick-borne illness caused by Borrelia burgdorferi that causes a range of symptoms, including rash, constitutional symptoms, arthritis, and neurologic or cardiac abnormalities. LD presents in three stages: primary, early disseminated, and tertiary disseminated. Each stage is highly variable in onset and presentation, and symptoms may manifest across multiple stages. Patients with early stages of LD are often seronegative, so the decision to treat is clinical.
