AbstractWe discuss the formulation of a new nutation series to be used in the reduction of modern space geodetic data. The motivation for developing such a series is to develop a nutation series that has smaller short period errors than the IAU 1980 nutation series and to provide a series that can be used with techniques such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) that have sensitivity to nutations but can directly separate the effects of nutations from errors in the dynamical force models that effect the satellite orbits. A modern nutation series should allow the errors in the force models fo

The IERS nutation series was developed as a nutation series which would match observations and could be used with geodetic systems which have sensitivity to nutations but are not able to determine accurately corrections to the IAU-1980 nutation series. After experimentation with different methods for parameterizing the nutation estimation problem, the best fit to the VLBI observed nutation angle data was found by estimating selected coefficients in the Mathews et al. Previous analyses of nutation angle errors from Mark III VLBI data have been made by estimating offset corrections to the instantaneous nutation angles from single-day observing sessions. Adjustments to the coefficients of the nutation model were then estimated from the time series of offset corrections. In this paper we estimate the corrections to the nutation series coefficients directly from the multi-year ensemble of data. The resulting corrections have smaller uncertainties than corrections estimated from the daily offsets because the direct solution has many fewer degrees of freedom. We

The signal-receiving end of acquisition, pointing, and tracking (APT) systems applied to intersatellite laser communication terminals usually uses a fast-steering mirror (FSM) to control the fiber-coupling process, has a complex structural design, and induces large errors in the nonideal coaxial optical path. Herein, we propose a fiber-optic nutator using a piezoelectric ceramic tube (PCT) as the driving unit that allows scanning in the focal plane of the light signal to achieve active fiber coupling in the APT system. The effect of the nutation angle on the flow inside a precessing cylinder is experimentally explored and compared with numerical simulations. The focus is laid on the typical breakdown of the directly forced m = 1 Kelvin mode for increasing precession ratio (Poincaré number) and the accompanying transition between laminar and turbulent flows. Compared to the reference case with a 90° nutation angle, prograde rotation leads to an earlier breakdown, while in the retrograde case, the forced mode continues to exist also for higher Poincaré numbers. The dynamics of a heavy symmetric top are studied in connection with the Hannay angle. When the top undergoes a steady precession due to gravity without nutation, the Hannay angle has a geometric nature such that it is identical to the solid angle subtended by the loop swept out by the symmetry axis of the top. Here, we show that the Hannay angle can also be described by the angle between two radial vectors on the disk of the top corresponding to the pure spinning motion and the coupled motion of spin and precession for one period of the precession.
