Abstract:
Despite high volumes of manure production in the Shenandoah Valley, there are still areas of forage production in the Shenandoah Valley that are nutrient deficient, because manures have traditionally been applied to higher value row crops. Furthermore, anecdotal reports have suggested that application of poultry litter to pastureland may increase the abundance of weeds. This study was conducted to compare the effects of poultry litter and inorganic fertilizers on soil fertility, aboveground botanical composition and soil seed bank composition of established mixed naturalized pastures. Healthy and sustainable dietary transformations offer significant potential to improve the health and sustainability of food systems. However, devising sustainable and healthy diets is challenging due to the lack of understanding of the relationship between nutrients and sustainability. The main aim of this thesis is to introduce a nutrient-level sustainability assessment approach to understand the win-win and trade-offs when developing healthy and sustainable diets. The novel approach for assessing sustainability in relation to macronutrients was introduced by integrating the input-output tec

Abstract:
Atmospheric nitrogen deposition to the ocean has more than doubled in the past 150 years due to anthropogenic activity, reaching levels comparable with nitrogen fixation in the subtropical North Atlantic. Previous studies have suggested that atmospherically deposited N may increase export production, decrease surface water phosphate levels, and substantially impact geochemical estimates of nitrogen fixation. This dissertation reports on the magnitude and biogeochemical fate of soluble N and P deposition in the subtropical North Atlantic. Aerosol and wet deposition time-series samples were used

Lakes comprise 87% of surface freshwater existing in liquid form on Earth. In recent years, however, lake condition has deteriorated at an alarming rate primarily attributed to an increase in anthropogenic-related nutrient inputs. These inputs present the greatest challenge to lake ecosystem stability as they cause eutrophication, which is often characterised by deoxygenation of bottom waters and phytoplankton blooms. Blooms of cyanobacteria are of particular concern as some species or strains produce toxins that affect biodiversity and organisms that are part of the foodweb, as well as causin

Because of their position in the landscape, riparian zones can function as a buffer between waterways and excess nutrient inputs from the terrestrial environment. While removal of nitrate via denitrification can improve water quality, there are potential negative effects of denitrification because N2O is a greenhouse gas. Abstract:
Snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) production by large scale commercial producers in Ethiopia is under intensive production and relies on high rates of nitrogen (N) fertilizer and irrigation during the dry season. Despite increasing interest to produce this crop, small scale farmers cannot afford the high cost of N fertilizer. Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to test snap bean production under a low input production system better suited to small scale resource limited farmers. Field experiments were conducted in 2011 and 2012 under rain fed conditions, and in 2012 under irrigati

The impact of the intense agricultural activities on high-elevation ecosystems has not been carefully examined. Studies of nutrient input-output are good ways of evaluating ecosystem’s function and health conditions. This study examined weekly bulk deposition and streamwater chemistry at Piluchi Experimental Forest and monthly streamwater chemistry at Herhuanchi together with a previous study to evaluate dynamics of nutrient input-out to evaluate the effect of mountain agriculture on high-elevation

The hyporheic interstitial was recognized as an integral zone within the aquatic ecosystem bearing important functions for both adjacent compartments, surface and ground water, about 50 years ago. Since then, rather disciplinary works gained knowledge on the organismic community of this ecotone, its spatial extent, the role of distinct parameters such as hydrology and morphology, temporal characteristics, process dynamics, the role for stream or groundwater quality and restoration measures. However, a systematic study on the risks to the hyporheic functions was missing to date. This thesis co
