Abstract:
(1) Background: The integrated approach to the prevention and treatment of eating disorders (EDs) requires knowledge and can be used only when specific risk factors are known. The aim of this study was to examine the differences in food choices and eating behavior between males and females; (2) Methods: This study comprised 148 females and 27 males aged from 18 to 26-years-old (MEAN ± SD = 21.4 ± 1.86 years old). Information about EDs was obtained from four different measures: the body mass index (BMI), the eating disorder screen for primary care (ESP), a standardized and validated questionnaire called “My Eating Habits” and the food frequency questionnaire with 10 answers (FFQ-10); (3) Results: The risk for developing eating disorders was detected in nearly 67% of respondents. It was also shown that EDs were more common in females and how body weight affected the way individuals feel about themselves. Females showed more unhealthy eating habits, which contributed to dietary restrictions and emotional overeating, as they were also afraid of gaining weight. The frequency of eating meat and drinking alcohol was higher in males, whereas eating legume seeds was less frequent in females. (4) Conclusions: This study opens a new field, which will help health care professionals recognize the problems with eating disorders and treat them based on different sex characteristics.

Abstract:
Osteoporosis is a bone disease that results in weakening of bones and breakage of bones in severe cases. It means porous bone. It is most commonly seen in elderly people of both the sexes. In the early stages of bone loss, there are no symptoms. But once the bone gets weakened symptoms such as back pain, stooped posture, loss of height over time and easy breakage of bones can be seen. Age, sex, family history, sex hormones, thyroid problems are the risk factors of osteoporosis. Dietary factors such as low calcium intake and eating disorders are also the risk factor in osteoporosis. Sedentary lifestyle, excessive alcohol consumption and tobacco use can increase the risk of osteoporosis: good nutrition and regular exercise help to keep our bones healthy throughout our life. A self-administered questionnaire containing about 15 questions were prepared and circulated through online survey Google forms link. About 100 middle-aged and old-aged male and female people responded to the survey. The responses were collected, tabulated and statistically analyzed using SPSS software. 54% of the total population was male. 53% of the participants have responded that they have back pain. 38% of people responded that their parents or siblings suffer from osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is more common among elderly people and in postmenopausal women. Also, not only women but men also suffer from osteoporosis. A proper healthy diet and weight-bearing exercises can prevent osteoporosis. Prevention from fractures is the primary goal in osteoporosis.

Abstract:
Feeding and Eating Disorders (FED) are mostly described in infants and adolescents but are less well-known in children. Information on the prevalence of FED in the general pediatric population is still limited. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and the care pathway of FED in a population aged 0–18 years old, using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-5 classification. Two physicians interviewed 401 families using a questionnaire including demographics, BMI, dietary behavior data, and age-appropriate screening tools. Qualitative and quantitative variables were compared using the Chi2 test and Student’s t-test, respectively. After a headcount adjustment based on the French population by age group, the estimated prevalence rate was 3% [95%CI (1.7–5.1)] for Avoidant and Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), and 9.7% [95%CI (7.2–13.0)] for Unspecified FED (UFED), which included other restrictive and compulsive FED. The median age for ARFID was 4.8 years (0.8–9 years), and 7.5 years (0.6–17 years) for UFED. The interviews did not identify cases of anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, other specified FED, pica or rumination. Only 15.2% of children with an FED were receiving medical care. The development of validated pediatric screening tools, as well as the training of health professionals in children FED is necessary.

Abstract:
Obesity and ageing are current issues of global concern. Adaptive homeostasis is compromised in the elderly, who are more likely to suffer age-related health issues, such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. The current worldwide prevalence of obesity and higher life expectancy call for new strategies for treating metabolic disorders. Grape-seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) is reported to be effective in ameliorating these pathologies, especially in young animal models. In this study, we aimed to test the effectiveness of GSPE in modulating obesity-related pathologies in aged rats fed an obesogenic diet. To do so, 21-month-old rats were fed a high-fat/high-sucrose diet (cafeteria diet) for 11 weeks. Two time points for GSPE administration (500 mg/kg body weight), i.e., a 10-day preventive GSPE treatment prior to cafeteria diet intervention and a simultaneous GSPE treatment with the cafeteria diet, were assayed. Body weight, metabolic parameters, liver steatosis, and systemic inflammation were analysed. GSPE administered simultaneously with the cafeteria diet was effective in reducing body weight, total adiposity, and liver steatosis. However, the preventive treatment was effective in reducing only mesenteric adiposity in these obese, aged rats. Our results confirm that the simultaneous administration of GSPE improves metabolic disruptions caused by the cafeteria diet also in aged rats.

Abstract:
Objective. Thyroid volume measured by ultrasound to define goiter needs reliable local thyroid volume reference from iodine-sufficient populations. The aim of this study is to explore the reference interval for normal thyroid volume in schoolchildren aged 8–10 years from Zhejiang Province, China.Methods. A probability-proportionate-to-size sampling method was applied to select a representative sample of 1213 children aged 8–10 years in Zhejiang Province to detect the thyroid volume, salt iodine, and urine iodine.Results. Median urinary iodine concentration in involved schoolchildren was 178.30 (125.00) μg l−1, with the percentage of samples less than 100 μg l−1as 12.69% and more than 300 μg l−1as 15.25%. Thyroid volume was significantly correlated with age and anthropometric measurements independently of each other. The 97th percentile of thyroid volume in our study was larger generally than the new international reference.Conclusions. The iodine nutritional status in Zhejiang Province was at an adequate level. Despite some limitations in this study, we initially established the reference values for thyroid volume in 8–10-year-old schoolchildren in Zhejiang Province, China, as a local reference to be used for monitoring iodine deficiency disorders.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine risk factors for 30-day complications, reoperation, and readmission after ostomy reversal in infants less than six months old. Infants aged two weeks to six months who underwent ostomy reversal were identified in the 2012 to 2016 ACS NSQIP Pediatric database. Demographics, comorbidities, and 30-day outcomes were assessed. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the independent effects of clinical variables on risk of 30-day complications, reoperation, and readmission. Among 1021 infants, 163 (16%) suffered a 30-day complication. SSIs were the most common complication (5.7%), followed by unplanned reintubation (5.2%) and bleeding (3%). Mortality was 0.4 per cent. Dependence on nutritional support and hematologic disorders were independently associated with postoperative complications. Forty-five children (4.4%) required reoperation and 22 (2.2%) were readmitted for conditions related to the procedure. Younger age and preoperative dependence on oxygen or nutritional support were associated with increased length of stay. SSI, unplanned reintubation, and bleeding are the most frequent complications after ostomy takedown in infants less than six months old. Attention to risk factors predisposing to these complications, including dependence on nutritional support and hematologic disorders, may contribute to improved surgical outcomes.

AbstractObjectiveTo investigate the association between eating patterns and mental health problems in young Norwegian adolescents (12–13 years of age).DesignCross-sectional study. Dietary information was reported by parents using a retrospective FFQ. Eating patterns were identified using principal component analysis. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire was used to measure mental health problems. The association between eating patterns and mental health problems was examined using multiple logistic regression analysis.SettingPrimary schools, Telemark County, Norway.SubjectsChildren (n 1095) aged 12–13 years and their parents.ResultsChildren with high scores on a ‘varied Norwegian’ eating pattern were less likely to have indications of any psychiatric disorders (adjusted OR = 0·5; 95 % CI 0·3, 1·0) and hyperactivity-inattention disorders (adjusted OR = 0·4; 95 % CI 0·2, 0·8) than children with low scores on this pattern. Children with high scores on a ‘junk/convenient’ eating pattern were more likely to have indications of hyperactivity-inattention disorders (adjusted OR = 3·4; 95 % CI 1·3, 8·6) than children with low scores on this pattern. Children with high scores on a ‘snacking’ eating pattern were more likely to have indications of conduct/oppositional disorders (adjusted OR = 3·8; 95 % CI 1·2, 11·5) than those with low scores on this eating pattern.ConclusionsWe identified a significant association between eating patterns and mental health problems in young adolescents, independently of physical activity, sedentary activity and background variables. A diverse diet rich in unrefined plant foods, fish and regular meals was associated with better mental health, while energy-dense, nutrient-poor diets and irregular meals were associated with poorer mental health.

Abstract:
High selenium concentrations were associated with cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and central nervous disorders. The author examined the relation of serum selenium concentration with serum lipids levels with the use of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018. 759 adults aged more than 20 years old from NHANES 2017-2018 were examined in the analysis. Serum selenium was measured by mass spectrometry. Triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol were measured through enzymatical methods. LDL cholesterol was calculated then. Comparing Q4 to Q1 of serum selenium, the multivariable adjusted average differences (95% CI) in triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol were 21.3 mg/dL (9.1, 33.4 mg/dL), 2.3 mg/dL (-0.6, 5.2 mg/dL), 6.3 mg/dL (-1.3, 13.9 mg/dL), 12.8 (95% CI: 4.2, 21.5 mg/dL), respectively. Hence, The increasing serum selenium concentration is associated with increasing triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol among US adults.

Abstract:
The presence of cognitive deficits in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is well-documented. Specifically, short- and long-term memory, attention/vigilance, and executive function (e.g. processing speed, mental flexibility, and problem solving) are affected. Cognitive deficits in aging occur in similar areas (i.e., memory and processing speed). Given that a greater percentage of older adults experience sleep-disordered breathing as compared to middle-aged adults, it is possible that OSA may account for some of the deficits typically attributed to aging. This study investigated this hypothesis by comparing middle-aged and older adults with and without OSA on computer-based measures of cognitive performance. No effect of OSA or an interaction between OSA and age on cognitive function was found; an effect of age on processing speed, distinguishing stimuli rapidly, attention, spatial ability/mental flexibility, and both working memory and short-term visual memory was found. This study also explored whether or not cognitive function may be improved in persons with OSA by re-assessing those participants one month after treatment. An effect of treatment on improvements on processing speed, distinguishing stimuli rapidly, mental flexibility, and short term memory was found. Overall, findings reflect the ability of treatment to improve cognitive function among OSA patients, regardless of lack of deficits when compared to those without OSA.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the study of malnutrition and sarcopenia, its relationship in the onset of physical frailty in older adults, and several nutritional strategies proposed for its prevention and treatment. There is an interaction between a number of processes that can converge in the onset of physical frailty in older people, characterized by a decrease in the strength, endurance, and reduced physiological function that increases the vulnerability of the individual to develop an increased dependency and / or death. On the one hand, malnutrition due to an inadequate intake of energy and nutrients, and on the other the loss of muscle strength and function involved in sarcopenia. Based on these assumptions, a systematic review of the literature and a case series study were undertaken to assess the efects of dietary enrichment with conventional foods on energy and protein intake in older adults. The results suggest that dietary enrichment with low-volume, energy- and nutrient-dense foods is an efective intervention in older people to increase energy intake and meet energy requirements. Moreover, the same intervention would improve protein intake in older people and meeting the target set for protein. The same results indicate that dietary enrichment would also produce improvements in nutritional status in patients at risk of malnutrition or already malnourished. Given the lack of results regarding improvements in functional status with the intervention initially studied, a new study was undertaken to assess the efects of a multifactorial intervention with free leucine supplementation combined with resistance training on muscle strength and functional status in older adults. The results of this study showed how the intervention produced moderate gains in leg muscle strength and certain components of the functional status in older adults that fulflled their energy and protein requirements, when compared with resistance training alone.

Abstract:
The mouth contributes to nutrition, respiration, and communications but it also contains potential pathogens that threaten other parts of the body. It is readily accessible to spot early signs of immune, endocrine, haematological, gastrointestinal, metabolic, and neoplastic disorders. Teeth are destroyed rapidly by the sugar-laden diets and poor oral hygiene that are common occurrences among residents of long-term care facilities. Moreover, the adverse effect of rampant dental caries from medications that disturb salivary flow is too often overlooked by physicians and pharmacists. Oral cancer causes more deaths than each of colorectal, gastric, prostate, and breast cancers, while oral mucositis can be an excruciatingly painful side effect of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Overall, impairments and disabilities of the mouth and teeth influence physical and cognitive homeostasis and frailty, whereas effective management of oral disorder is an essential component of good geriatric care for successful ageing and quality of life in old age.

Abstract:
Chapter 5 provides an overview of the causes and prevalence of depression in children and adolescents, followed by a discussion of brain research and genetic susceptibility of depressive disorders. A description of the signs and symptoms and the diagnostic criteria for depressive disorders and issues specific to children and adolescents is presented. Suicide rates in young people in the United States continue to rise. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth aged 10–14 and the second leading cause of death among those 15–24 years old. An overview of risk and protective factors for suicide, warning signs, and information on intervening with suicidal youth is presented. Eating disorders are addressed in this chapter due to the high co-occurrence of eating disorders with depression, suicide, and the serious health complications that accompany them. The chapter ends with real-life case studies followed by questions for consideration or class discussion.

Chapter 1 (“Nutrition”) features works of art depicting patients with nutritional disorders. Examples of both overnutrition and undernutrition are included. The final work considered is one by Johann J. Hasselhorst, titled Dissection of a Young Woman, in which an 18-year-old suicide victim is being dissected by a male surgeon to determine the ideal measurements of the female form. Her ideal from is contrasted earlier in the chapter with that of subjects, such as the Venus of Willendorf (a Paleolithic statuette discovered in the village of Willendorf, Austria in 1908 C.E.), with various forms of morbid obesity, and others, such as the Starving Buddha (a 2nd century B.C.E. bronze statue located in the Lahore Museum), that depict Kwashiorkor, cretinism, scurvy, pellagra, and other ravages of undernutrition.

Abstract:
Lesotho, like many developing countries, experiences challenges in providing quality early childhood services for children below 3 years of age. No formal education programme for children aged below 3 years exists yet, except the informal daycare centres run by inexperienced child-minders. At this tender age, the focus for child development and care must focus on child protection, healthy stimulation nutrition and health. Realizing the need for quality child services for the age cohort, Catholic Relief Services Lesotho introduced a programme named Whose Child is This? (WCIT) that focuses on provision of quality services for the children. This chapter shares Lesotho’s experiences in addressing delivery of quality informal early learning environments. A case study of one daycare centre in the Maseru Industrial settlement was undertaken focusing on practices and services rendered to children aged below 3. New lessons learned were the need for partnerships among agencies serving children’s needs, and collaboration with parents strong advocacy for implementation of the Nurturing Care Framework is critical for all ECCD service providers. Institutions of higher learning need to step forward to produce research evidence on importance of strong foundations for children aged below 3 years.

Abstract:
Pediatric gastroenterology practitioners adopted different guidelines that focus on high-quality nutrition care for rare disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease in its two main forms: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. This chapter presents a case report of ulcerative colitis with extra intestinal manifestations in the form of right knee arthritis and hypo-chromic microcytic anemia in a 13 years old Egyptian boy who presented to the outpatient services with complains of frequent attacks of right knee pain and swelling, nausea, decreased appetite and food intake, along with significant weight loss. Attacks of diarrhea associated with abdominal cramping and progressive fatigue was reported at the first visit. The authors of this case chapter aimed to share their experience in diagnosing, managing and systematically follow up a pediatric ulcerative colitis patient. The chapter refers to a comprehensive management of the patient's disease who was effectively managed by an integrated multidisciplinary approach.

Abstract:
Weight management offers patients with liver cirrhosis significant health benefits. This case study describes the treatment of liver cirrhosis through dietary interventions. A 48-year-old male presented at Doctor Soliman Fakeeh Hospital in Saudi Arabia, Jeddah. The patient was suffering from morbid obesity (BMI= 43.76 kg/m2), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, and chronic hepatitis B viral infection. Sleeve gastrectomy surgery was not possible due to the patient having liver fibrosis (stage 4). Alternatively, he was offered a healthy lifestyle intervention involving advisement regarding dietary habits and the initiation of a regular exercise routine. FibroScan was repeated seven months after the dietary intervention, where it was observed that the liver fibrosis improved from stage 4 to stage 3 post-treatment. Additionally, the patient lost almost 29% of his original body weight. In this case, weight management through following a healthy, balanced diet and increasing physical activity for one year produced remarkable improvement in the patient's liver cirrhosis related to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Previous study reported that numerous nutritional-related interventions have been shown to improve health aspect for young children. However, social and economic factors also played an indirect role to their nutritional and health fulfillment. The purpose of this study was to examine biological and social-economic determinants of child development using path analysis model. Subjects and Method: This was an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design. The study was carried out at early childhood education programs (PAUD) in Wonokromo Sub-district, Surabaya, East Java. A sample of 200 children aged 2-5 years old from 25 PAUD was selected by simple random sampling. The dependent variable was child development. The independent variables were nutritional status, exclusive breastfeeding, number of children, family income, maternal education, and maternal employment status. The data were analyzed by path analysis. Results: Child developmental disorder directly increased with poor nutritional status (b= 0.95; 95% CI= 0.03 to 1.86; p= 0.041), low family income (b= 2.01; 95% CI= 1.13 to 2.90; p &lt; 0.001), mothers working outside the home (b= 0.85; 95% CI= 0.07 to 1.63; p= 0.032), exclusive breastfeeding (b= 2.05; 95% CI= 1.23 to 2.86; p&lt;0.001), and number of children ≥2 (b= 1.21; 95% CI= 0.20 to 2.23; p= 0.019). Child developmental disorders indirectly increased with maternal education. Conclusion: Child developmental disorder directly increases with poor nutritional status, low family income, mothers working outside the home, exclusive breastfeeding, and number of children ≥2. Child developmental disorder indirectly increases with maternal education. Keywords: child development, biological, social-economic determinants Correspondence: Ajeng Ayu Titah Pujangkara. Abstract:
Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) and depression are important comorbid conditions that can lead to more serious health outcomes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) supports routine screening for depression as part of standard diabetes management. The PHQ2 and PHQ9 questionnaires are good diagnostic screening tools used for major depressive disorders in Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). This quality improvement study aims to compare the rate of depression screening, treatment, and referral to behavioral health in adult patients with DM2 pre and post-integration of depression screening tools into the electronic health record (EHR). Methods We conducted a retrospective chart review on patients aged 18 years and above with a diagnosis of DM2 and no initial diagnosis of depression or other mental illnesses. Chart reviews included those from 2018 or prior for before integration data and 2020 to present for after integration. Sixty subjects were randomly selected from a pool of 33,695 patients in the clinic with DM2 from the year 2013-2021. Thirty of the patients were prior to the integration of depression screening tools PHQ2 and PHQ9 into the EHR, while the other half were post-integration. The study population ranged from 18-83 years old. Results All subjects (100%) were screened using PHQ2 before integration and after integration. Twenty percent of patients screened had a positive PHQ2 among subjects before integration, while 10% had a positive PHQ2 after integration. Twenty percent of patients were screened with a PHQ9 pre-integration which accounted for 100% of those subjects with a positive PHQ2. However, of the 10% of patients with a positive PHQ2 post-integration, only 6.7 % of subjects were screened, which means not all patients with a positive PHQ2 were adequately screened post-integration. Interestingly, 10% of patients were treated with antidepressants before integration, while none were treated with medications in the post-integration group. There were no referrals made to the behavior team in either group. Conclusion There is no difference between the prevalence of depression screening before or after integration of depression screening tools in the EHR. The study noted that there is a decrease in the treatment using antidepressants after integration. However, other undetermined conditions could have influenced this. Furthermore, not all patients with positive PHQ2 in the after-integration group were screened with PHQ9. The authors are unsure if the integration of the depression screens influenced this change. In both groups, there is no difference between referrals to the behavior team. Implications to Nursing Practice This quality improvement study shows that providers are good at screening their DM2 patients for depression whether the screening tools were incorporated in the EHR or not. However, future studies regarding providers, support staff, and patient convenience relating to accessibility and availability of the tool should be made. Additional issues to consider are documentation reliability, hours of work to scan documents in the chart, risk of documentation getting lost, and the use of paper that requires shredding to comply with privacy.
