Aspects of the mineral nutrition of plants in in vitro cultures were studied in Delphinium 'Princess Caroline' and Hosta 'Fladspen Blue', two species with contrasting growth habits. Initially methods for accurately measuring mineral concentrations within gelled culture media using atomic absorption spectrophotometry were developed and verified. The effects of light, EDTA, phosphate and agar concentration on mineral availability were studied. The successful micropropagation of woody or herbaceous perennial plants is often limited by large losses which occur as plants are transferred from culture to soil. Poor photosynthetic capability may be partly responsible for losses at this stage. Cucumber plants in the vegetative phase of growth received deficient, sufficient, or toxic treatment of manganese (Mn) during a 15-day period beginning 43 days after germination. Incidence of eating disorders among aerobic instructors in South Florida was studied. One hundred and three aerobic instructors participated in the study (14 males and 89 females). A 40-item questionnaire used to identify eating disorder behaviors and attitudes was completed by the subjects. Subjects were divided into groups based on gender and number of aerobic classes taught per week. Findings indicated that the incidence of anorexia was higher among aerobic instructors from South Florida (1 in 17) than in the general population. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) form a symbiosis with 70% of land plants and may contribute significantly to plant phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) acquisition in exchange for photosynthetic carbon. AMF mainly acquire N as simple, inorganic molecules such as ammonium and nitrate, but whether AMF display a preference for either source, or can increase plant N content is uncertain. Furthermore, soil nutrient availability, especially that of N, may determine the extent to which a fungus engages in nutrient-for-C trade with plants; further experimental validation of this suggestion is warranted.

The acid phosphomonoesterase activity associated with two major rooting strategies in arctic tundra plants was examined: that of Eriophorum vagina tum, a dominant plant in tussock tundra ecosystems, with its predominantly non-mycorrhizal root system; and that of ectomycorrhizal roots. Eriophorum has phosphatase activity which is evenly distributed along its root surface, has a pH optimum at soil pH (3.5-4.0), and continues at substantial rates at 1 °C. Abstract:

The primary objective of this study was to assess the psychosocial risk factors for eating disorders in Hispanic (70%) and Non Hispanic (30%) female university students (n= 618). Risk factors were assessed with the Psychosocial Risk Factor Questionnaire (PRFQ) and its four sub-scales. There was a significant difference in the score for Concern (F = 243, p .046) and Media Pressure (F = 367, p < .006) by ethnic group. African Americans had a significantly lower mean score (3.27 ± 028) for media pressure than all other ethnic groups. There was a significant difference in total PRFQ score (F = 2.5

Inoculation of Parthenium argentatum (guayule) with an endomycorrhizal fungus (Glomus intraradices) increased the growth of guayule in saline and non-saline soils low in available phosphorus. Addition of 100 ug/g of P as Ca(H2PO4)2 to soils low in available phosphorus was as efficient as G. intraradices in stimulating the growth of guayule. The concentrations and total plant accumulations of minerals within guayule shoots varied depending on growth of the plants and the minerals assayed.
