Abstract:
Aspects of the mineral nutrition of plants in in vitro cultures were studied in Delphinium 'Princess Caroline' and Hosta 'Fladspen Blue', two species with contrasting growth habits. Initially methods for accurately measuring mineral concentrations within gelled culture media using atomic absorption spectrophotometry were developed and verified. The effects of light, EDTA, phosphate and agar concentration on mineral availability were studied. Substantial quantities of mineral impurities are introduced by the inclusion of agar and sucrose in culture media and significant precipitation was shown

The successful micropropagation of woody or herbaceous perennial plants is often limited by large losses which occur as plants are transferred from culture to soil. Poor photosynthetic capability may be partly responsible for losses at this stage. Results show that growth irradiance, CO 2 and carbohydrate in the growth medium are all factors which combine to affect the development of photosynthetic capability in vitro. Low capacity for the photochemical dissipation of excess light energy is primarily a result of endproduct inhibition of photosynthesis by accumulated leaf carbohydrate, and resu

Abstract:
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) form a symbiosis with 70% of land plants and may contribute significantly to plant phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) acquisition in exchange for photosynthetic carbon. AMF mainly acquire N as simple, inorganic molecules such as ammonium and nitrate, but whether AMF display a preference for either source, or can increase plant N content is uncertain. Furthermore, soil nutrient availability, especially that of N, may determine the extent to which a fungus engages in nutrient-for-C trade with plants; further experimental validation of this suggestion is warranted.

Thesis (MTech (Horticulture))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017.<br>The exact responses to the concentration of compost tea extract and methods of irrigation application were not previously measured on Hypoxis hemerocallidea and Siphonochilus aethiopicus. Commercial exploitation, habitat loss and degradation, overharvesting, and enhancement of their medicinal properties, have led to this investigation and the need to replenish both these valuable plant species. This is crucial for plant survival, especially in the wild and for use of the traditional medicinal plants. Hypoxis hemer

Abstract:
Adequate nutrient supply to the medium solution of container-grown crops is a major concern to container plant production practices. The extent to which nutrients are removed by the plant from the medium solution of a container, however, has never been demonstrated. Mariogold, Tagetes erecta ‘Inca’ seeds were glasshouse-grown in 500 cc plastic pots containing 1 peat: 1 perlite (v/v) medium and fertilized daily with 200 ppm N as ammonium nitrate. Thirty, 35, 40, 45 and 50 day old plants were subjected to either 20, SO, 80 or 110 ppm N. Medium solutions were tested at hour 0 and 6, and analyzed
