The last two decades have seen an increased drive to administer parenteral nutrition (PN) to patients in their home environments, thereby reducing associated hospital costs and improving patient quality of life. Abstract:

Parenteral nutrition is a therapy that supplies patients with all their nutritional requirements intravenously, thus eliminating the need for oral alimentation. The therapy was first introduced in the United States to hospitalized patients in the late 1960's. The benefit of long-term parenteral nutrition was soon recognized, and a program for ambulatory or home parenteral nutrition (HPN) was developed. In British Columbia, the first HPN patient was begun on such therapy in 1972. Since then, more than 50 British Columbians have received HPN. In March 1986, there were 24 patients on the program.

Syftet med denna systematiska litteraturstudie som inkluderar 18 artiklar, har varit att belysa vilka nutritionsstöd som kan förebygga och behandla malnutrition hos barn med cancer samt vilka omvårdnadsbehov som finns i samband med nutritionsbehandling. Resultatet visade att barn med cancer som behandlas med strålning och/eller cytostatika ofta drabbas av olika biverkningar som påverkar nutritionen. Cirka 46 % av barnen utvecklade malnutrition. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of a fat-supplemented diet on the horse. Experiment one examined the effect of a diet which contained 20% digestible energy as corn oil fed to four horses in comparison with a control group. Plasma lipoproteins, muscle lipoprotein lipase, total serum lipids, and ultrasound-estimated body fat were monitored for 10 weeks. The plasma lipoproteins fractionated into VLDL, LDL, HDL and albumin, and each was assayed for protein, cholesterol and triglyceride content.
