Abstract:
Adolescent girls with good nutritional status are one of the efforts to prevent stunting. Indonesia is faced with three burdens of nutritional problems, namely the high prevalence of stunting, wasting, obesity and anemia. Good nutritional status can be realized if balanced nutrition practices are carried out properly. The practice of balanced nutrition is a response to balanced nutrition knowledge in consuming balanced foods and behaving in a healthy life The purpose of the .to determine the correlation of nutritional knowledge and and practice of balanced nutrition with the nutritional status of adolescent girls. survey research with Cross Sectional approach. The research was conducted at MAN 1 Surakarta, January – June 2023. The number of samples seemed to be 30 people. Sampling using purposive sampling. Data collection using questionnaires, Height measurement (TB) with Microtoise staturmeter and Weight measurement (BB) with manual weight scale. The statistical test was performed univariately, bivariately with Chi Square test (ɑ = 0.05). A significant relationship between the level of nutritional knowledge and balanced nutrition practices (r: 0.434), a significant relationship between the level of nutritional knowledge and nutritional status (r: 0.596), a significant relationship between balanced nutrition practices and nutritional status (r: 0.486). There is a significant relationship between the level of nutritional knowledge, balanced nutrition practices and nutritional status with moderate closeness

Abstract:
Abstract Children with neuromuscular disorders (NMDs) may experience a spectrum of nutritional issues with adverse health consequences. This review summarizes the current understanding of nutritional care in pediatric NMDs, recognizing disease-specific aspects of nutrition alongside the challenges and needs in dietetic care. General or disease-related nutritional issues for children with NMDs include being underweight, overweight, or obese and having swallowing difficulty, gastroesophageal reflux, diarrhea, and/or constipation. Specific challenges in NMD nutritional assessment include alterations in body composition and energy requirements and difficulties in measuring anthropometry. Multidisciplinary dietetic intervention focuses on optimizing nutrient intakes to avert growth failure or obesity and managing feeding difficulties and gastrointestinal problems. Care guidelines are disease specific and vary in approach and detail. To promote best clinical practice across diverse settings, a standardized approach to assessing growth and nutrition across all pediatric NMDs is needed to direct optimal care centered on individual requirements. Future studies should focus on determining the prevalence of specific nutritional issues and the effectiveness of specific interventions among various pediatric NMD populations.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: Nutrition education is a required part of gastrointestinal training programs. The involvement of gastroenterologists in clinical nutrition once their training has been completed is unknown. The aim of the present study was to determine the practice pattern of gastroenterologists in clinical nutrition and their perceived adequacy of nutrition training during their gastroenterology (GI) fellowship.METHODS: The Canadian Association of Gastroenterology mailed a survey to all of its 463 Canadian clinician members and 88 trainee members. Components of the survey included knowledge of nutritional assessment and total parenteral nutrition, involvement in a nutrition support service, physician involvement in nutritional assessment and nutrition support teams, obesity management, insertion of gastrostomy (G) tubes and management of tube-related complications, and adequacy of training in clinical nutrition.RESULTS: Sixty per cent (n=279) of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology clinicians and 38% (n=33) of the fellows responded. Of the clinicians, 80% were practicing adult gastroenterologists with the following demographics: those practicing full time in academic centres (42%), community practice (45%), completed training in the last 10 years (32%) and those that completed training in the United States (14%). Although only 6% had a primary focus of nutrition in their GI practices, 65% were involved in nutrition support (including total parenteral nutrition), 74% placed G tubes and 68% managed at least one of the major complications of G tube insertion. Respondents felt a gastroenterologist should be the physician’s consultant on nutrition support services (89%). Areas of potential inadequate training included nutritional assessment, indications for nutrition support, management of obesity and management of G tube-related complications. The majority of clinicians (67%) and trainees (73%) felt that nutrition training in their GI fellowship was underemphasized.CONCLUSIONS: The majority of Canadian gastroenterologists are involved in nutrition support. However, this survey demonstrated that nutritional training is underemphasized in most training programs. It is important for GI fellowship programs to develop standardized nutrition training that prepares trainees for their practice.

Abstract:
Nutrition is vital to the long-term survival of children undergoing blood and marrow transplantation (BMT), but there is no standardization on how to optimize the nutritional status of these patients. A literature search was performed to evaluate nutritional support approaches currently in practice for pediatric patients who are undergoing BMT. CINAHL, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched for peer-reviewed articles evaluating nutritional interventions for BMT recipients aged 20 or younger. Nine articles published between 2019 and 2023 were found and reviewed. The nutritional support varied between enteral nutrition, parenteral nutrition, a combination of both, and prophylactic feeding tube placement. The post-transplant outcomes identified as associated with alterations in nutritional regimens included length of stay, date of platelet engraftment, incidence of acute graft-versus-host disease, infection rate, and overall survival. The use of any amount of enteral nutrition compared to parenteral alone was beneficial. Complications during BMT can potentially be decreased via prioritizing enteral nutrition over parenteral. The paucity of literature on this topic highlights an unmet need in the field. Future research should focus on ways to optimize the nutritional support of transplant recipients, including increasing the likelihood of enteral feeding tube placement and utilization.

Abstract:
Poor nutrition knowledge and unhealthy dietary practices contribute to the rising burden of non-communicable diseases in many low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria. This study aimed to assess the nutritional knowledge and practices of residents in Kano Metropolis, a rapidly urbanizing region in northern Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 420 participants (186 males, 234 females), aged 15–70 years. A validated FAO-UN questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demographic variables and nutrition-related knowledge and practices. Data were analyzed using STATA v24.0, employing Chi-square tests to assess associations. Female participants exhibited higher levels of nutritional knowledge and healthier dietary practices than males (p < 0.05). This may be attributed to education exposure, particularly nutrition-related subjects in secondary schools. Participants had good awareness of balanced diets, but knowledge gaps existed in nutritional risks and harmful food choices. Most participants stated that they often did not plan for a balanced diet, often did not consume high-fiber foods, and did not exercise regularly. Women more often stated they ate nutrient dense and high protein foods and men more often used nutritional supplements. These results underscore the need for widespread nutrition education programs and the integration of nutrition curricula in schools.

Abstract:
Toddlers need a sufficient diet to support their physical and mental development because they grow and develop quickly during this time. Children under five's nutritional status is crucial to their overall health. A child's nutritional health is also influenced by their parents' educational methods and parenting styles. While ineffective parenting can lead to nutritional issues, effective parenting can help children get the nutrition they need. This study investigates how parenting practices affect the nutritional status of children under five. A review of the literature from 2019 to 2020 was conducted as part of this research technique using Google Scholar and the keywords "parenting patterns," "under-five nutrition," and "nurses." The literature review findings indicate a substantial relationship between toddlers' health and nutritional status and how parents raise their offspring. Well-educated children under five typically have better nutritional conditions than those raised in unsuitable ways. Based on this research, their parents' parenting practices significantly influence toddlers' nutritional status. Thus, attempts to improve children's nutritional condition throughout the toddler years must prioritize enhancing the quality of parenting practices.

Abstract:
Thesis (MNutr (Interdisciplinary Health Sciences. Human Nutrition))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of the study was to investigate current perceived role of nutritional supplements in adolescent (16-18 years) male rugby players and establish usage practices within Kwazulu Natal (KZN) schools. Methods The nutritional supplementation practices of 68 rugby players from 7 KZN secondary schools were surveyed using an anonymous paper-based questionnaire. The boys were asked to identify from a list (with Other as a selection) which supplement they used, the frequency of use, sources of supplement information and advice they base their choices on, where products were bought from, reasons for use, average monthly spend on buying these supplements, whether dietary changes were made in conjunction with taking a supplement and what was their understanding of the role of supplementation in achieving their performance goals. Results Sixty eight out of 236 invited participants completed the questionnaire. This translated into a response rate of 29%. Fifty four percent of participants admitted to using nutritional supplements, protein and creatine being the most popular products listed (43% and 22% of supplement users, respectively). Thirty five percent of supplement users supplemented daily and 24% supplemented 3-4 times per week. Friends were the most popular source of advice and information regarding nutritional supplements 32% (n=12), with supplement company representatives the next most commonly used source 22% (n=8). Seventy percent (n=26) of supplements are bought from a pharmacy, with an average monthly cost of R250, but ranging from R30 to as much as R1500 per month. Seventy percent (n=26) indicated that they also made dietary changes in addition to taking the nutritional supplement. These dietary changes included making healthier food choices 81% (n=21), increasing intake of protein foods 65% (n=17), planned snacks around exercise 35% (n=9), increasing carbohydrate-rich foods 62% (n=16), increasing fruit and vegetable intake 50% (n=13), and including snacks between meals 35% (n=9). The study participants rated practice sessions and weight training as most important in terms of helping them achieve their goals; diet, rest and supplements were similarly ranked as being between fairly to very important. Twenty two percent admitted that they would consider taking an illegal supplement if it would assist them in achieving their goals. Conclusions This study indicates that at least half of rugby-playing school boys (age 16-18 yrs) are making use of some form of supplementation, with protein and creatine supplementation being the most popular. The data indicate that rugby-playing school boys see their peers as a good source of information, and are willing to spend a large amount of money obtaining it (about R250 per month on average). This is concerning as peer pressure combined with lack of knowledge on nutritional supplement usage (and nutrition) can lead to widespread misuse of supplements, and potential detrimental side-effects in this young study population. However it highlights the value that school-level educational programmes (age and sport specific) can have in improving supplement usage practices and creating sound nutritional practices amongst this population, better equipping them at making informed decisions. In addition, educational programmes should be extended to other influential sources of information such as school coaches, teachers and parents.

Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy
Department of Animal Sciences and Industry
KC Olson
The objective of this series of studies was to develop and improve methods of production in cow/calf operations of the Great Plains. Ultrasound measures of longissimus muscle depth (LMD) and intramuscular fat (IMF) of Angus × heifers were used to predict lifetime cow productivity. IMF and LMD were categorized into high, medium, and low groups (IMFG and LMDG, respectively). Cows in the high and medium LMDG had greater (P < 0.05) pregnancy rates than cows in the low LMDG. Calf BW at weaning increased (P < 0.05) as dam IMF increased. Angus crossbred cows grazing native range were used to evaluate the effects of pre-partum ruminally-protected choline (RPC) supplementation on postpartum beef cow and calf performance. Under the conditions of our study, RPC supplementation had minimal (P > 0.05) effects on pregnancy rates and performance of beef cows and calves. Lactating crossbred cows with calves and non-pregnant, non-lactating Boer-cross nannies were used to evaluate the effects of co-grazing on herbivory patterns and animal performance while grazing native tallgrass rangeland infested heavily by sericea lespedeza (SL). The proportion of individual SL plants that had been grazed at the end of the trial was greater (P < 0.01) in co-grazed pastures than in single-species pastures. Grazing cows and goats in combination increased (P < 0.01) grazing pressure on SL without negatively affecting beef cow performance, beef calf performance, or residual forage biomass. Angus × cows and heifers grazing native range were used to evaluate the effects of pre-partum corn steep liquor supplementation on postpartum beef cow and calf performance. Under the conditions of our study, CSL supplementation did not generally promote beef cow and calf performance that was equivalent to supplementation with an isonitrogenous, dry, corn-soy alternative. Cow calf pairs were used to evaluate the effects of grazing system (GS) and stocking rate (SR) on cow and calf performance. Late season rest-rotation (LSRR) was compared with continuous (CONT) grazing at low, moderate, and high SR. Under the conditions of our study, CONT produced consistently better (P < 0.01) late-season cow and calf performance than LSRR. Season-long effects of SR on animal performance were minimal; moreover, GS and SR treatments produced equivalent pregnancy rates.

Abstract:
Infants and young children in the Northwest province of Nigeria are susceptible to malnutrition. Inappropriate and inadequate breastfeeding and complementary feeding result in stunting, underweight, and wasting. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine current feeding practices of infants not older than 2 years and their nutritional status in Northwest Nigeria. The theory of planned behavior was adopted in this research. With a total sample size of 3,861, multiple linear regression was adopted as a predictive analysis to delineate the correlation between two or more independent variables and one continuous dependent variable. Also, adopted was an independent t test to demonstrate the statistical difference between the mean of the dependent variable and that of the independent variable. The coefficient of determination (R2) indicated that the change in underweight associated with exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) was 8.1%. The overall regression model was significant, F(18, 879) = 4.29, p < .05, adj. R2 = .06 predicted underweight in infants under 6 months of age. The coefficient of determination (R2) indicated that the changes in underweight associated with age appropriate complementary (CP) feeding was 8.0%. The overall regression model was significant, F(18, 2,944) = 14.29, p < .05, adj. R2 = .08. The model predicted underweight in infants 624 months of age. The results from this study can be used in the reinforcement of EBF and age appropriate CP guidelines and policies by the extension of paid leave, implementing flexibility in working hours, and private space to breastfeed.

Abstract:
Background: Child overweight and obesity are increasing public health problems and food habitsamong children are concerning. Healthy family food habits and basic parental nutrition and cooking skills are important for ensuring children receive an adequate diet. Objective: To explore the nutritional quality of 5-10-year-old Swedish children’s diets and associations with parental self-perceived cooking skills, awareness of nutrition guidelines, family cooking practices and demographic variables. Methods: A cross sectional online survey was responded by 72 parents. Nutritional quality was measured using The National Board of Health and Wellness’ Dietary Index. The survey also measured parental self-perceived cooking skills, awareness of nutrition guidelines, family cooking practices and demographic variables. Associations were tested with independent t-tests and Spearman rank correlations. Results: Mean Dietary Index score was 8.11, which indicates an unsatisfactory adherence to Nutrition Guidelines. Children’s food habits in this sample were better than in the national survey Riksmaten barn 2003, but intake levels of fruit, vegetables and fish was still below recommendations. Associations were found between children’s Dietary Index scores and parental cooking skills, nutritional awareness and frequency of child participating in cooking. No associations with demographic variables were found. Conclusions: Children’s diets are not in line with recommendations for 46 % of the participants, but appears to have improved since the latest national survey. Parental cooking skills, nutritional awareness and children participating in cooking more often was associated with better nutritional quality in children. The small sample size, participant heterogeneity and the recruitment method limits the generalizability of the results.

Abstract:
Thesis (MNutr)--Stellenbosch University, 2011
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Introduction Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune disorder characterized by inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissue causing pain, swelling and stiffness. Studies suggest that aspects of the diet may alleviate symptoms and decrease the risk of complications. The scientific basis for a role of dietary therapy in RA has grown although there is still no consensus on the optimum diet. It has been shown that persons with RA tend to have a poor nutritional status; and rheumatoid cachexia, the loss of body cell mass, occurs in nearly two-thirds of all patients with RA. The study aimed to establish what RA patients are practicing and their perceptions regarding the effect of diet, nutritional supplements, medication and complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) and therapies on their symptoms as well as determining their body composition and the possible presence of rheumatoid cachexia. Methodology The study design was a cross-sectional study with an analytical component. The study population consisted of adult (18 years or older) RA patients in the Cape Metropole from the private and public sector. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used followed by the measurement of weight, height, waist circumference and skinfold thickness. Information was also gathered from the medical records. Results The sample size comprised of 251 RA patients (n=201 public sector; n=50 private sector). The mean body mass index (BMI) was 30.3 kg/m2 for females and 26.6 kg/m2 for males. BMI was used to classify obesity (n=133; 45.9%), overweight (n=66; 26.8%), normal weight (n=63; 25.6%) and underweight (n=4; 1.6%). Waist circumference measurement classifications showed a substantially increased risk for metabolic complications in 51.8% of participants (n=127) and an increased risk in 21.2% of participants (n=52). Just over half of the participants (n=65; 55.6%) had an unhealthy high body fat percentage classification. Rheumatoid cachexia was seen in 10.3% participants (n=12). Low fat-free mass (Fat-free mass index <10th percentile) was seen in 21% participants (n=24) and obesity (Fat mass index >90th percentile) was seen in 27% of participants (n=31). Twenty nine percent of participants (n=73) believed that certain types of food could improve their symptoms of RA and 60% of participants (n=151) believed that certain foods worsened their symptoms. Sixty four percent of participants (n=161) thought that nutritional supplements or complementary and alternative medicines and therapies could improve their symptoms of RA and 98% (n=246) of participants used nutritional supplements. The most frequently used supplements included folic acid (n=218; 91.6%), calcium (n=182; 76.5%), vitamin D (n=185; 77.7%), omega-3 fatty acids (n=48; 64.9%) and multivitamin and mineral preparations (n=22; 29.7%). Conclusion The obesity and waist circumference figures were unacceptably elevated in this population and the body composition of these RA patients should be highlighted as a concern. The high prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) need to be urgently addressed since CVD is the leading cause of mortality in RA patients. This study highlights the important role of the intra-professional team, including the dietitian, in the management of RA patients.

Abstract:
Edamameâ s (Glycine max L. Merrill) consumption in the US has also been growing due to purported health benefits. Edamame grows well around the US, but few have measured the growth and yield in the mid-Atlantic region. The objective of these studies were to determine the potential yield of edamame, determine how yield components change with planting date and cultivar, and to measure total protein, lipids, antioxidant activity and isoflavone concentrations at harvest.. The five cultivars (BeSweet 292, BeSweet 2015, BeSweet 2001, Midori Giant and Sunrise) used in the cultivar evaluation trial and for nutritional constituents analysis were grown in Painter, Virginia in 2008 and 2009. The cultivar evaluation trial yielded between 5,600 and 8,400 kg per ha. Percent marketable pods ranged from 74.3 and 85.6% in the cultivar evaluation trial. There were significant differences in average seed size across cultivars in both years. Cultivar lipid content followed the same patterns in both years with 2009 having lower overall concentrations than 2008. Protein contents were similar in 2008 and 2009. Both years, â BeSweet 2015â and â BeSweet 2001â had high radical scavenging ability and Midori Giant had the lowest. In 2008, there were no significant differences in the ORAC assay. â BeSweet 292â had significantly more reducing activity in the DPPH assay than Sunrise in 2009. Isoflavones were measured in 2008 and 2009 at harvest and temporally in 2009. Of all isoflavones, Malonyl genistin had the highest concentration. Edamame is a suitable crop for cultivation in Virginia, and is high in nutritional quality.
Master of Science

Abstract:
This study explores the interconnection between health, nutrition, and the emotional bond in the human-dog relationship. Using a multiple-choice questionnaire, the research examines health issues, dietary choices, food rewards, and emotional ties among dog owners, with a focus on individuals aged 31-45 from diverse backgrounds. The main objective is to understand how health, nutrition, and emotional bonds are linked between dogs and their owners. The survey covers topics such as health observations, veterinary care, food rewards, and owners' nutritional knowledge. Results reveal frequent health issues in dogs, particularly obesity, highlighting the importance of addressing these conditions. In contrast, owners reported fewer health problems related to diet. Regular veterinary visits were common, indicating responsible pet care. The use of commercial dog treats as rewards was widespread, with many owners believing it strengthens their bond with their pets. While owners showed moderate nutritional awareness, there is potential for targeted education to improve practices. Many respondents were willing to adjust their dogs diets for health reasons, showing a proactive attitude towards canine well-being and an openness to expert dietary advice. The study underscores the need for holistic approaches that integrate health, nutrition, and emotional connections, with opportunities for interventions to enhance both human and canine health. Further research is recommended to validate these findings

Abstract:
Whey is a significant environmental contaminant since its waste load is estimated to be 100175 times more than that of an equivalent volume of household wastewater. It is estimated that around half of the whey produced is used for human or animal use, and the other half is released into the environment as waste water, which adds to pollution. Thus, in accordance with the guidelines established by the EU Green Deal Program, its valorisation through the development of health-promoting products is an important step for the environment and the food sector. Numerous whey-based beverages are mentioned in the specialized literature. Wine-like beverages can be made by fermenting whey with different kinds of yeasts, producing liqueur-style drinks, a drink with an alcohol concentration of 1014% etc. The purpose of the research was to obtain fermented drinks from deproteinized whey, endogenously impregnated with CO2. The novelty of these beverages consisted of using local ingredients to improve the nutritional value of the finished product berry syrup. The technological process of production was similar to that for obtaining bottled sparkling wines. The finished products were analyzed from a physical-chemical and sensory point of view. The study emphasizes that a contemporary beverage should meet the four primary demands of the consumers: sensory quality, thirst-quenching properties, affordability, and a good health profile. By repurposing whey into a value-added product, this research contributes to sustainable food production practices and offers a new solution for whey waste management.

Abstract:
Background: Dietary practices are an aspect of dietary quality that indicates general nutritional adequacy. Lack of diversified diet is a severe problem in the developing world, where diet are predominantly starchy staples with few animal products, seasonal fruits and vegetables. The nutritional status of a woman during pregnancy is important as a suboptimal diet impact negatively on the health of the mother, and the newborn. There is limited knowledge in the area of dietary practices and nutritional status of pregnancy factors affecting it among pregnant women despite evidence showing that maternal nutrition has important direct and /or indirect consequences for all other age cohorts. The study aimed to asses factors affecting dietary practices and nutritional status of pregnant adolescents. Method: Cross sectional analytic design was used and the study was carried out in Ol’Lessos village. A Sample size of 129 pregnant women was targeted with the first respondent being randomly selected and thereafter systemic sampling was used until the required sample was reached. Mid upper arm (MUAC) of the left arm of the respondents of the women were measured to determine the nutritional status. Data were collected using researcher administered questionnaires and focus group discussion guide. Data collected using 24-hour recall was analyzed by Nutrisurvey. Results: There were significant differences in the mean macronutrients and micronutrients with regard to the dds where respondents with a higher DDS (.> six) were more likely to have a higher macro and micronutrient intake compared with those who had a lower. The mean energy intake was 1909 Kcal +630 which is below the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA)of 2400 kcal for pregnant women. Based on MUAC cut offs, 31.7 percent were malnourished (MUAC< 21.0 CM) while 68.3 percent of the respondents were normal (MUAC >21.0cm). MUAC was positively correlated with the socio-economic status. Based on the WHO cut offs,73.6 percent were anaemic. Regression showed that the age of the mother and the numbers of births were significant predictors of the MUAC of the pregnant women (p=0.001). Conclusion: It’s is recommended that guidelines for nutrition and diets be carried out through practical demonstrations in the community and health facilities. The findings of the study may be used by Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation (MOPHS) and other organizations to promote and implement programs aimed at improving dietary practices and nutrition status among pregnant in the county. Abstract:
Purpose: This study provides a comprehensive overview of the dietary habits and nutritional requirements of athletes competing. The research aims to address the diverse scenarios athletes face, particularly in competitive sports, and explore recent advancements in sports nutrition accordingly. Research Methodology: A qualitative review was conducted, synthesising data from existing literature and evidence-based practices in sports nutrition. Key elements such as pre-race dietary strategies, energy replenishment protocols, and nutrient requirements for athletes in weight-specific sports were analysed. Additionally, metabolic pathways critical to athletic performance were examined to identify the most effective nutrients and supplements. Findings: The study highlights that optimal nutrition enhances athletic performance and recovery. Pre-race diets that emphasise easily digestible carbohydrates and rapid energy replenishment strategies post-exercise were found effective. Athletes in weight-categorised sports must carefully manage body weight while maintaining energy levels to sustain high performance. Supplements such as branched-chain amino acids, maltodextrin, and vitamins E and B12 were identified as beneficial in improving recovery and performance when integrated into a balanced diet. Managerial Implications: The findings underscore the importance of personalised dietary plans for athletes, tailored to the demands of specific sports and individual metabolic needs. Sports organisations and coaching teams can adopt these insights to develop effective nutritional protocols, optimising performance and recovery. Nutritionists working with athletes should also consider the unique challenges of weight maintenance and rapid energy replenishment in different sporting contexts.

Abstract:
Children with cleft lip and palate often suffer from nutritional deficiencies and subsequent growth problems, both largely attributed to feeding difficulties due to the structural defect, as well as the numerous surgical procedures they undergo. The purpose of this review article is to assess the nutritional needs of these children and emphasize the role of nutrition in their long-term growth and development, along with educating parents about nutrition and various alternative feeding practices as an important aspect in the treatment of cleft lip. and palate that might otherwise go unnoticed. For this review, several articles on cleft lip and palate, from plastic surgery journals to dental surgery journals, were studied and more articles were based on subsequent literature reviews of those mentioned above. It was concluded that to achieve optimal health in these children, the dietary changes required per day were miniscule. Rather, it is the delivery method of breast milk or formula that often needs to be altered to reduce the effort and resulting caloric loss of the newborn, indirectly increasing caloric intake and resulting weight gain and growth.

Abstract:
Malnutrition is a significant public health issue affecting under-five children in many developing countries, including Kenya. This mixed-methods study aimed to assess the nutritional status and risk of malnutrition among under-five children in Isiolo County, Kenya. The study used a cross-sectional design and purposive sampling technique to recruit 384 participants, and data collected on socio-demographic characteristics, dietary practices, and nutritional status informed the development of appropriate interventions to address malnutrition in this region. The study found a high prevalence of global acute malnutrition (17%), underweight (14.6%), stunting (15.9%), and low nutrient intake among children under five. The study also found a low rate of exclusive breastfeeding and late introduction of solid foods, highlighting the need for interventions that promote and support appropriate feeding practices for infants and young children in this population. Additionally, the study identified poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices in Isiolo, Kenya, with a significant number of households lacking access to proper sanitation facilities and not treating their drinking water before consumption. The findings highlight the need for urgent interventions that target poverty reduction, food security, access to healthcare, and improved living conditions of households to improve the nutritional status of under-five children in Isiolo, Kenya. Additionally, interventions are needed to improve access to proper sanitation facilities, promote safe kitchen waste disposal methods, and encourage proper water treatment and handwashing practices to prevent the spread of diseases in this population. Abstract:
Adequate nutrition practices are essential for the efficient production of superior goods in aquaculture systems. Nutrition is a key component in the aquaculture industry because feed constitutes about 50% of the variable expense of production. Fishmeal and fish oil have traditionally been the main primary materials used to support the aquaculture industry. They have largely been supplanted by plant-based raw materials, but specific techniques are needed to satisfy fish dietary needs. As aquaculture has expanded, people have been searching for alternative farming nutritional sources since fish meal and fish oil are produced from captured wild fish. Fish have different nutritional needs that rely on a variety of variables. This paper describes an experimental study that was completed on the production of pelletized complex feeds with high stability that were used in the feeding technology of some fish species grown in a polyculture system with recirculation and cyclic water supply. The purpose of feed formulation is to mix ingredients of different nutritional quality so as to obtain a balanced diet, which biologically available nutrient profile approximates the nutritional needs of the concerned species. In fish farms, the choice of feeder for different types of fish takes into account the following criteria: the level of stability in the water, the return on investment in feed, efficient conversion of feed and its attractiveness to fish. The high level of feed stability prevents feed losses and reduces water contamination. The results showed a high stability of the pellets associated with an important increase in the size of the fish raised in the polyculture system. Although each feeding recipe showed benefits for certain fish species, the R3 feeder was the optimal mix, leading to 43% average growth for all varieties and being considered the best option for polyculture systems.

Abstract:
Adolescent birth rate per 1000 adolescents aged 15-19 is a global phenomenon that translates to greater proportion in early pregnancy and lactation in this group. The prevalence of pre-mature pregnancy in Kenya is at 31.1%. This cohort is at a high risk of nutritional status when they become pregnant due to competition of nutrients. 69.2% of households in Kilifi County consume food at a borderline putting them at risk of malnutrition. The objective of this study was to investigate association of nutritional status, feeding patterns, and their covariates among lactating adolescents aged 15-19. The research approach was both qualitative and quantitative. Respondents attending kilifi hospital, able to provide consent and residing in kilifi were selected for inclusion. Interviews were used to collect data on lactating adolescents’, breast feeding practices and anthropometry to determine their nutritional status. The 24-hour recall and food frequency questionnaires aided in obtaining data on nutrients and energy requirements. Data Analysis was done using Nutri-servey and Excel to analyzed all food items consumed, SPSS determined feeding patterns, lactation practices while Logistic Regression explained association between independent and dependent variables. The study findings indicate most adolescent lactating mothers have normal body eight. They may have had stunted growth because height had a Mean of 160 cm below global expected height of 163cm for women aged 18. Insufficient dietary intake and feeding patterns greatly influenced growth. Dietary intake was not uniform due to no monitoring or enough education on nutritional requirements. Essential nutrients missed out in the dietary management of adolescent lactating mothers that impacted on low exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months. Majority of the respondents did not carry out exclusively breastfeeding. Dietary patterns like snacking, low consumption of fruits and faulty dieting, were most likely the cause for low EB patterns. Abstract:
Despite growing interest and recognition of urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) as a nature- based solution, there is limited empirical evidence in countries like India on its role in reconfiguring goals on environmental functions (such as biodiversity, waste management, water recycling, micro-climate regulation, etc.) and social wellbeing (such as food and nutrition security, gender relations, work burdens, land tenure and community ties). A need to address this gap led to the ideation of the project ‘Urban and peri-urban agriculture as green infrastructures’ ( UPAGrI ). When UPAGrI started in 2019, the research on UPA in India was thin but growing. However, the practical experience of urban farming across Indian cities is thriving and diverse, built on decades of bottom-up experimentation. Within the landscape of our ever-changing cities, we found vibrant communities-of-practice sharing seeds and knowledge, engaged online influencers discussing composting and water reuse, and stories of farming becoming sites of multi-generational bonding and nutritional security. This compendium is a collection of 29 such innovative UPA practices from across the different cities in the country. These diverse case studies are loosely categorized into four themes: environment and sustainability; food, nutrition and livelihood; gender and subjective well-being; and urban policy and planning. Written mostly by practitioners themselves, the case studies collectively recognise and celebrate UPA innovations and practices, serving as a repository of lessons for peer-to-peer learning, and demonstrating how UPA can be one of the many solutions towards sustainable, liveable Indian cities.

Ulep, Valerie Gilbert. The Determinants of the Socioeconomic Inequality and the Trajectory of Child Stunting in the Philippines. Philippine Institute for Development Studies, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.62986/dp2023.04.

Full text
Abstract:
About a third of Filipino children are stunted or chronically malnourished. However, there is a paucity of evidence on the socioeconomic inequalities of stunting in the Philippines. This study has two objectives. First, it discusses various determinants of the large socioeconomic disparity in stunting. Second, it models the trajectory of stunting until 2030 should the country expand the coverage of key nutrition and health interventions. Based on the authors’ previous decomposition analysis, maternal nutritional status and education factors, quality of prenatal care, and child diet are significant drivers of the disparity. Furthermore, using a compartment-based model, it finds a 10-percentage point reduction in the prevalence of stunting, with the expansive promotion of infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices and complementary food interventions. Lastly, the authors note that addressing the socioeconomic disparity in child stunting and universal provision of nutrition and health interventions puts the country on track to its 2030 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target.

JHA, Anil. Revitalising millets in Northeast India: A healthy choice - Policy Brief. International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.53055/icimod.1041.

Full text
Abstract:
Millets have long been a staple of the regional diet in Northeast India because of their durability and high nutritional value. However, the rise in consumption of fine cereals, along with a subpar production system and inadequate compensation for millet farmers, have led to the decline of millet consumption and production. The low volume output is exacerbated by the lack of access to good-quality traditional seeds, fertilisers, and effective farming methods, coupled with changing patterns of climate. Furthermore, poor market demand and a lack of pro-poor policies of the government make millet growing even more difficult. Farming communities have few options for generating revenue since limited efforts have been made to market and link millet-based products to markets. Thus, there is a need to support existing farming practices that generate agrobiodiverse landraces, develop climate-resilient cultivars, and facilitate platforms for the value addition of the product. The existing primary processing of millets is labour-intensive and the lack of proper storage facilities results in poor-quality grains fetching low market prices. Thus, there is a need to develop infrastructure and build the capacity of farmers and other stakeholders along the millet value chain.

The use of aquaculture effluents in spray culture for the production of high protein macroalgae for shrimp aqua-feeds. United States Department of Agriculture, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2013.7597934.bard.

Abstract:
The FAO has projected a doubling in world demand for seafood during the 21 ed from aquaculture of marine fish and shrimps fed primarily on fishmeal-based aquafeeds. However, current practices of high intensity monoculture of shrimp in coastal ponds and fish in offshore pens have been strongly criticized as being ecologically and socially unsustainable. This view derives from un- checked eutrophication of coastal marine ecosystems from fish farm effluents, and the destruction of coastal estuarine ecosystems by shrimp farm constructions, plus aquaculture’s reliance on wild-caught small fish - which are excellent food for humans, but instead are rendered into fishmeal and fish oil for formulating aquafeeds. Fishmeal-sparing and waste- reduction aquafeeds can only delay the time when fed aquaculture product are priced out of affordability for most consumers. Additionally, replacement of fishmeal protein and fish oil by terrestrial plant sources such as soybean meal and oil directly raises food costs for human communities in developing nations. New formulations incorporating sustainably-produced marine algal proteins and oils are growing in acceptance as viable and practical alternatives. This BARD collaborative research project investigated a sustainable water-sparing spray/drip culture method for producing high-protein marine macrophyte meals for incorporation into marine shrimp and fish diets. The spray culture work was conducted at laboratory-scale in the USA (UCSD-SIO) using selected Gracilariaand Ulvastrains isolated and supplied by UCONN, and outdoors at pilot-scale in Israel (IOLR-NCM) using local strains of Ulvasp., and nitrogen/phosphorus-enriched fish farm effluent to fertilize the spray cultures and produce seaweed biomass and meals containing up to 27% raw protein (dry weight content). Auburn University (USA) in consultation with TAMUS (USA) used the IOLR meals to formulate diets and conduct marine shrimp feeding trials, which resulted in mixed outcomes, indicating further work was needed to chemically identify and remove anti-nutritional elements present in the IOLR-produced seaweed meals.

Harris, Jody, Sarah Gibbons, O’Brien Kaaba, Tabitha Hrynick, and Ruth Stirton. A ‘Right to Nutrition’ in Zambia: Linking Rhetoric, Law and Practice. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2021.051.

Full text
Abstract:
Zambians in all walks of life are affected by malnutrition, and working through human rights is one key way to address this injustice. Based on research aiming to understand how a ‘right to nutrition’ is perceived by different actors globally and in Zambia, this brief presents a clear framework for a rights-based approach to nutrition in Zambia. This framework identifies rhetorical, legal and practical functions of human rights, and offers a way to think through clearly how different actors might work on the different aspects of rights. Addressing these three aspects of a right to nutrition all together – instead of by very separate constituencies as happens now – is fundamental to a coherent rights-based approach to nutrition. This brief outlines which actors need to come together – from law and policy, activism and communities, across global, national and local levels – and suggests how to start. It lays out the Zambian policy, legal and practical environment as it stands, and suggests actions to move forward in each of these areas in ways that are consistent with the different aspects of rights. Through these steps, Zambia can become known as a hub of action on a right to nutrition, to join with others in using human rights to address the injustice of malnutrition.

Abstract:
The use of agricultural technologies has facilitated gains from agricultural commercialisation for smallholder farmers in Africa. Practices that involve these technologies play an important role in tackling poverty and food insecurity in Sub-Saharan Africa. Hence, the link between agricultural technology practices, food security and nutrition is important, and has relevant implications for policymaking. Using new panel data for oil palm producers in Ghana from the Agricultural Policy Research in Africa (APRA) consortium, this paper sheds light on the relationship between the use of agricultural practices, food security and nutrition outcomes, focusing especially on the mediating role of women empowerment.
