Abstract:
Background: Nutrition is a major determinant of health and an essential factor in the development of countries. Faced with food insecurity and malnutrition, Benin has implemented policies and programs aiming to reduce the progression of this burden. Aims: To take inventory of nutritional status and interventions implemented to reduce the prevalence of different forms of malnutrition and food insecurity in Benin. Methods: A review of nutritional and food data available at the national level and consultation of intervention management reports was carried out from May to July 2020 and then, the data were compiled and structured. Results: Even though Benin has natural resources and remarkable biodiversity, the country faces a double nutritional burden marked by undernutrition: stunting (32%), anemia (71.5%), underweight (17%), wasting (5%) in children under 5 years, exclusive breastfeeding rate (42%) and over-nutrition: obesity (7.4%), diabetes (12.4%) in adults. Food insecurity remains persistent in 9.6% of households and undernourishment concerns 7.4%. The main interventions at the community level are made by the National Integrated School Feeding Program and the Coordinated Early Childhood Nutrition and Development Project. In addition, are the implementation of essential nutrition actions and nutrition-sensitive interventions involving different sectors such as, non-governmental organizations and technical and financial partners. Conclusion: Food and nutrition situation in Benin has been slightly improved thanks to the implementation of multisectoral coordination of interventions. Nonetheless, many challenges remain to be addressed, including the scaling up of successful interventions and advocacy for a substantial mobilization of resources in order to achieve global nutrition targets and sustainable development goals. Abstract:
The nutritional and epidemiological transitions have affected the Algerians’ lifestyle primarily in their nutritional status, eating behavior, and health status. Overweight and obesity, being present at all ages of life, includes several factors related to the risk of developing, at an older age, non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The nutritional situation of children under 5 years remains a concern of low birth weight, low prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding, stunting growth, and underweight. Nutritional deficiencies, mainly in micronutrients, persist in different age groups, especially in pregnant and lactating women reflecting the consequences of a poor diet characterized by low consumption of fruits and vegetables, and higher consumption of fatty products as well as sweet with high-calorie density. The issue of food and nutritional security remains an important issue. Despite the persistent nutritional problems, the level of food security indicators shows that the country is not exposed to food insecurity, but dependency on food imports remains quite high. The living conditions in rural areas must be improved in order to strengthen the agricultural sector which must be able to meet the needs of the population. Updating and analyzing the nutritional situation using existing data will enable the strategies put in place by national and international organizations to be implemented. Abstract:
Background: The role of adequate nutrition in national and human development has been recognized; hence nutrition has become one of the global development agenda. This has led to the setting up of global goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Nigeria, with other nations in African have been making efforts towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Aim: This review is aimed at providing update on the nutrition situation in Nigeria with a view to providing recommendations for addressing gaps and barriers that may hinder progress. Materials and methods: Desk review was carried out. Information was obtained from the most recent published national and sub-national surveys, country profiles, reports from ministries and development agencies and individual researches from universities and research institutions. Results: There is limited data to adequately assess the nutrition situation in Nigeria. Despite all the efforts, most of the nutritional indices are below global averages. Nigeria has a stunting rate of 37%, the second highest in the world. Non-communicable diseases are also emerging rapidly as a result of poor intake of foods and dietary components. The high prevalence of malnutrition in all its forms can be attributed to food insecurity, poor infant and young child feeding practices, low socio-economic status, corruption and poor governance, to mention a few. Conclusion: Nigeria is still struggling to meet the 2030 nutrition targets; however, there are opportunities to accelerate progress in tackling malnutrition in all its forms. Malnutrition cause disturbance of processes such as production energy and growth on children. Chidren with age 6-12 years old prefer to watch television. They spend their time more than one hour to watching television and playing a game. The situation caused reducing energy, so can cause overweight. The purpose of this study was analized the correlation of nutritional status with physical activity. The method of this study used analytic with cross sectional approach. The sampel of this research were 6th grade students at SDN banyu Urip III Surabaya which amounts to 35 students. The sampling technique was simple random sampling. Physical activity was measured with questionnaire and nutritional status used body weight according to age curve from NCHS. The statistic used spearman rho correlation test. The result showed that p value = 0,00 with α=0,05. It means there is a correlation of nutritional status with physical activity. That situation described about the lack of nutritional status can cause lack of production energy so can cause less agile physical activity and look weak. The recommendation from this study are increasing physical activities beyond study time and increasing the variation of the menu in canteen, so that students can choose nutritious food.

Abstract:
Background: Sudan is situated in the northeastern part of Africa. The population of the country is approximately 43 million, spread over 1.88 million square kilometers. Although Sudan has great resources, most of the population suffers from poverty and food deficiency because of the conflicts in the different parts of the country .The suffering was augmented by climatic drought and floods which resulted in food insecurity. The population’s internal displacement is disadvantageous regarding access to health services and is consequently more vulnerable to diseases and malnutrition. In Sudan, thirty-three percent of the population suffered from food deprivation according to the national survey of 2010. The prevalence of undernourishment was 31% and 34 % percent for urban and rural populations respectively. Furthermore, based on WHO epidemiologic criteria, the prevalence of stunting and wasting are classified as profound, 38.2%, for stunting which is more than the average of the developing countries( 25%), wasting defined as low weight for height also has a higher prevalence in under-five in Sudan comparing it to the developing countries' average which is 16.8% and 8.9% respectively. Although recent national survey data are lacking, it is evident that micronutrient deficiencies are a major public health concern from the sporadic studies’ findings. Notwithstanding these challenges, the government and the Federal Ministry of Health, move along to make progress towards nutrition and food security, some supplementation campaigns have been conducted but coverage of the population is still low. Abstract:
The following work seeks to address the necessity that the inhabitants of the impoverished regions in Bolivia experience, as is the case of the highland region of Paceno, which is the understanding of their nutritional and alimentary situation. We studied the communities of Canavari, Pocohata, Colina Blanca, Puente Arriba, and Villa Arriendo de la Provincia Ingavi, in the province of la Paz. The studied variable was the nutritional sta te, having as parameters: physical and economical availability of the food, food consumption, nutritional habits, biological usage of the food, basic sanitary conditions, and the educationallevel of the heads of family. A cross-descriptive study was conducted considering the aforementioned values. Government help was required for the collection of data in each particular community, in which the necessary anthropometric measurements were collected, followed by a survey, and direct observation. In order to accomplish the goal of the study the following specific objectives were set: evaluate the nutritional state of the population, determine the availability of the food, and determine the consumption and usage patterns of the food. The obtained data shows different levels of malnutrition in both children and adults; regarding their nutritional state, it is important to emphasis the high prevalence of chronic malnutrition in both children and adults. The data shows that the diet followed by the inhabitants of the studied is very poor in variety, and limited by several factors, such as cost, poor availability, and poor crop diversity. We also observed that the primary base of the diet were carbohydrates, mostly obtained from tubers such as potatoes. According to the characteristics of the nutritional state presented by the studied populations, we can say, unless they are corrected, there is an inherent risk in that in the future, the work force in the community will diminish, causing a decrease in the crops, and therefore, a greater damage to the nutritional state of the people inhabiting this impoverished regions.

Abstract:
The present research work is a transverse and descriptive study, which had as its principal objective to determine the Food and Nutritional Situation of the communities of Villa Santa Chacoma, Hancara, Hichuraya Grande and Pan de Azucar of the Ingavi province of the department of the La Paz. The most relevant part of the study was in finding the elevated percentage of infant population that presents an elevated prevalence and different levels of malnutrition. In adults what calls the attention is the physical exhaustion and the loss of muscle tissue, this situation was seen as a consequence of poverty, food consumption, prolonged exposure to breastfeeding, complementary feeding, type of foods that those under the age of 2 eat, the lack of knowledge about nutrition, geographical location in the communities, the degree of instruction of the heads of family, sanitary conditions and above all the economic factor.

Although, there are different methods to interpret foliate analysis, there seems to be a few studies about the utilization of the diagnosis and recommendation integrated system (DRIS) and about the methodology of critical level for the reduced and normal distribution (NCRIZ), to evaluate the nutritional state of irrigated mango tree Tommy Atkins. The objective of this work is evaluating the nutritional state of the mango tree in the valley of Baixo Açu in two different seasons of foliating samplings, using DRIS and NCRIz methodologies to identify and put in order the nutritional limitations and compare the methodologies. The work was developed in Vale do Açu, an important mango tree producer in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, mainly in fluvial neo-soils. The samplings were chemically analyzed during the mango tree fenological development based on N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Zn, Mn, Fe and Cu contents, and respective productivities were collected in 106 cuts supplied by mango exportation companies. To determine the DRIS, the rules, calculation of the DRIS and the nutritional balance for each element and their relation two by two were established. To determine the critical level (NCRIZ), a developed method which uses normal distribution or Gauss-Laplace type was chosen. It is based on continuous distribution of reduced probability. To calculate the critical level, P equals to 90% of maximum production. The methodologies DRIS and NCRIZ were proved efficient to identify the limiting nutrients for the mango tree, once there are differences about limitation hierarchical order. As rules DRIS showed differences about the low productivity population. The variations will probably represent the level of limiting nutrients by excess and deficiency, whereas the NCRIZ allowed to calculate the levels within the reference recommended by the bibliographical referential. Thus, it is another tool for nutritional diagnosis having the advantage of no experiments in the field<br>A avaliação do estado nutricional por meio da análise foliar vem sendo uma ferramenta bastante útil para o diagnóstico nutricional de várias culturas em diversas partes do mundo.

Abstract:
A high-calorie diet inducing obesity is associated with breast cancer development. NK cells are modulated by dietary and metabolic factors and a decrease in their lytic activity promotes mammary tumor development. In the breast microenvironment, high concentration of leptin can be secreted by mammary adipocytes and thereby could stimulate tumor growth and control immune cells. Arginine, strongly consumed by tumor and myeloid-derived suppressor cells, could be lacking to NK cells. The aim of this work is to characterize the functional and metabolic activities of NK cells in response to nutritional stress. Initially, we explored in vivo the impact of a high-calorie diet on NK cells activity and mammary tumor development. Then, we identified potential functional alterations in NK cells by mimicking the conditions found in the tumor microenvironment such as the presence of high leptin concentration and arginine depletion. Female Balb-c nude mice were fed a high-caloric diet (HC) versus a standard caloric diet (SC) for 6 months. After five months, mammary tumor cells (MCF-7, SCT, HCT) or MatrigelTM (SC, HC) were implanted into the fourth mammary fat pads. The tumor development in HC diet-fed mice was associated with a decrease in body weight, body fat and lean mass and an increase in volume and weight of tumors. This diet induced tumor over-expression, at the transcriptional level, of enzymes involved in glycolysis and a down-expression of citrate cycle actors. Protein tumor levels of cleaved caspase 3, estrogen β and progesterone receptors were reduced while Ki67 was increased in the HC diet-fed mice. NK cell cytotoxicity of HC diet-fed mice was reduced. Although the presence of tumor stimulated NK cell lytic activity, this later was lower in the HCT group compared to the one of SCT mice. In vitro, leptin stimulated, in dose-dependent manner, the metabolic activity of NK cells. High leptin concentrations enhanced NK cell cytotoxicity against the MDA-MB-231 target cells. This phenomenon involved the increase of expression of TRAIL and IFN-γ in NK cells. However, against the MCF-7 target cells, NK cell lytic activity was reduced in the presence of high concentrations of leptin, probably in link to the decreased perforin expression. NK cell proliferation and cytotoxicity were impaired in response to arginine depletion. This inhibition of NK cell cytotoxicity could be linked to a low target cells recognition by NKp46 and NKp30, a reduced activating signal transmission by ζ chain and a low production of IFN-γ. Thus, high energy intake promotes mammary tumor development in particular by inhibiting NK cell cytotoxicity. In vitro, high leptin concentrations stimulate or reduce NK cell cytotoxicity according to the breast cancer cell targets. Furthermore, arginine depletion inhibits NK cell proliferation and cytotoxicity in vitro. These findings provide insight into the microenvironment impacts on NK cell antitumor response in tumor development

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e TecnolÃgico<br>The main goal of this work was to analyze the effect of water and potassium and interaction between these factors parameters which are related with vegetative growth (height of the plant, diameter of trunk below of the coastal and the diameter of trunk above of the coastal) and the parameters related with nutritional situation (potassium, iron and sodium) of the precocious dwarfish cashew tree (Anacardium occidentale L.) variety BRS 189. A field experiment was carried out in the parcel of ground D in at Curu-Pentecoste Irrigation District, CearÃ, Brazil, from september/2005 to february/2007. The statistical design was completely randomized blocks in split-plots, with four primary treatments, four secondary and four blocks. The main treatments corresponded to four water depths (W1 = 25% ETc; W2 = 50% ETc; W3 = 100% ETc; W4 = 150% ETc) with four levels of potassium (K0 = 0 g; K1 = 30 g; K2 = 60 g; K3 = 120 g de K2O. plant-1.year-1). The crop was installed at 7.0m 7.0 m spacing, irrigated by a microsprinkle irrigation system with 50 L.h-1 emitters. The results showed that the water and interaction water and potassium were significant to none parameters analyzed. Potassium influenced significantly height of the plant and diameter of trunk below of the coastal. The height of plant presented significant influence on water level only on the treatment were none potassium was applied. As to total nutrients in the plants: potassium, iron and sodium in a plant, only potassium presented compatible significant (8.1%) to water.

Abstract:
The researches headed for women regarding this theme used to focus on, almost exclusively, the problems of reproductive and gynecological diseases. Though, nowadays other aspects are subject of studies, due to significant changes of women\'s role in the contemporary society. Besides great portion of the feminine population is on the labor market, they continue taking responsibilities of maternity and family care. In this context, self-rated health status has been applied as one way of evaluating health condition, reflecting several aspects of lifestyle. The aim of this study is to investigate socioeconomic, demographic, nutritional, health and lifestyle determinants that interfere in self-rated health status among women that frequent the Sport Practices Center at the University of São Paulo (CEPEUSP). This work was accomplished under PRINUTHA activities and characterized with a transversal exploring study. The sample was composed by 162 adult women and, in order to associate self-rated health status with factors that could influence it, a logistic binary regression was estimated, defining as dependent variable the self-rated health status and, as independent variables: age, education, nutritional status, quality of the food consumption, intestinal habit and physical activity. The age average was of 31,46 (&plusmn;12,41) years and the education 13,77 (&plusmn;2,68) years. It was observed that 87% of the women self-evaluated their health positively, 33,4% were overweight, 41,4% presented bad intestinal habit, 78,4% needed to improve their diets and 69,7% made physical exercises. The nutritional status and the physical activity were shown statistically significant determinants (p <0,001 and p=0,050, respectively), and those women with normal weight presented a probability of 92,7% and the physically of 90,1% of having a good perception of health. Therefore, results corroborate public policy and the programs established by world-wide and national organizations with respect to the basic guidelines for a healthy lifestyle.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ainsi la responsabilisation et la participation active des populations sont indispensables<br>Several solutions have been proposed to the problem of food and malnutrition of the rural population in developing countries. Inspite of all mobilised efforts, this problem still subsists. The main purpose of this work is to examine this problem taking as a case study, all food dimensions of the rural yoruba population in Nigeria: from their food production methods, the consumption of food, to various aspects of food habits. Demographic statistics were used to establish a tight link between man's food and his health. Ignorance of nutritional needs by the rural mothers and women is the major cause of malnutrition in this area. The solution that we propose is that of nutritional education teaching. Our approach emphasizes the training of nutritional educators who are then charged with the responsibility of educating the population on better food preparation methods and a change of attitudes to nutritional problems. The population is then better prepared to control its environment, to compose a balanced diet with local food products within its reach. Active participation of the population is essential to the success of the program

Abstract:
AbstractEnd-of-life care constitutes an important situation of extreme nutritional vulnerability for older adults. Feeding decisions in late-stage dementia often provoke moral and ethical questions for family members regarding whether or not to continue hand-feeding or opt for tube-feeding placement. Despite the knowledge that starvation and dehydration do not contribute to patient suffering at the end of life and in fact may contribute to a comfortable passage from life, the ethics of not providing artificial nutrition and hydration (ANH) continue to be hotly debated. However, in the past two decades, voluntary stopping of eating and drinking (VSED) has moved from a palliative option of last resort to being increasingly recognized as a valid means to intentionally hasten death for cognitively intact persons dealing with a serious illness. Across many settings globally, when oral intake is deemed unsafe, decisions to withhold oral feeding and to forgo artificial means of providing nutrition are deemed to be ethically and legally sanctioned when the decision is made by a capable patient or their legally recognized substitute decision-maker. Decision-making at the end of life involves knowledge of and consideration of the legal, ethical, cultural, religious, and personal values involved in the issue at hand. This chapter attempted to illustrate the unique complexities when considering nutrition therapy (by oral and artificial means) at the end of life.

Abstract:
AbstractMaize farming in resettlement areas of Chirumanzu District of Zimbabwe is vulnerable to climatic variations. The Government of Zimbabwe encourages maize farmers in resettlement areas to adapt to climate variability through conservation farming and diversification among other measures. It is envisaged that the measures will improve maize farmers’ resilience and ability to safeguard food and nutrition security in the country. However, the process of adaptation is dynamic, complex, and multifaceted in nature. Several problems and dangers accompany the process of adaptation. The problems and dangers are associated with intangible and indirect costs. The focus of this chapter is to explore intangible and indirect costs associated with measures adopted by maize farmers in resettlement areas of Chirumanzu in Zimbabwe. Fifty-four maize farmers from four resettlement wards provided the data through semi-structured interviews. Diversification, changing planting dates, use of drought tolerant varieties were some of the measures adopted. Several problems and dangers accompanied the adaptation measures adopted. Intangible costs such as pain and suffering, embarrassment, ridicule, and stereotyping were experienced. Indirect costs including additional and unplanned costs were also encountered. This chapter concludes that intangible and indirect costs associated with adaptation may result in reduced adaptive capacity and resilience of maize farmers. Therefore, national governments should exercise extreme caution and desist from only encouraging farmers to adapt. Rather, they should consider intangible and indirect costs involved while providing solutions to reduce them to avoid situations where farmers are worse off while facilitating sustainable adaptation.

Abstract:
Heirs of future and potential tourists, students face with various difficulties during university period. The very primary step of physiological needs, eating habits and constraints, of such a wide audience who are supposed to be at the top of self-realization is an issue that is carefully be focused on. The aim of this study which tries to investigate Bartın Vocational School students’ tendency and constraints on nutrition is to search and identify daily main meals and snacks of students; to determine body-mass index on age basis;; and to evaluate the arguments whether interdependent variables such as economic level, place of residence and gender which are allegedly affect nutritional care have influence on food choice. This study is considered important because it assesses dietary habits and tendencies of consumers with different levels of opportunity and limited incomes. In this context, secondary data have been given in theoretical framework. Primary data, on the other hand, have been obtained through a questionnaire that is compiled from various sources. Research problem and hypotheses have been tested by parametric test Independent-Samples T Test and frequency analysis. As results of the research, the findings that students do not have adequate nutrition awareness though their body-mass index is in normal range; that they consume fast food particularly during the day; and that this situation leads to the so-called morbid obesity health problems have been discussed. In addition, policy recommendations and suggestions have been made in this regard.

Abstract:
Introduction Maintaining good life quality in urban neighbourhoods is one of the biggest challenges. The project "Healthy Neighbourhoods - Health Promotion and Prevention in Districts" ( 07/201712/2020) aims to describe and improve health and quality of life of citizens living in neighbourhoods with different socioeconomic statuses. Method To examine a possible connection between social and health situation, six districts with "very low", "low", "middle" and "high" social statuses will be compared. An instrument was developed to measure walkability, community sense, nutrition, alcohol and tobacco consumption, resilience, health-related quality of life as well as the socio-economic and the socio-demographic status. Results In April 2019, the team recorded n=621 interviews (n=102 in Lohbrügge, n=116 in Rahlstedt, n=87 in Sasel, n=135 in Stellingen, n=65 Wilhelmsburg and n=116 in Hamm). Men were somewhat overrepresented compared to women (n=268 woman, n=345 men, n=2 diverse, n=8 no indication). Respondents were aged between 18 - 96 (mean = 57.5, SD = 19.6). Discussion The results demonstrate different health situations, resources and challenges regarding the socio-economic status and the district respectively. To ensure a participative approach, the results will be presented to citizens and health experts living in these districts and form the basis to develop health promoting intervention.

Abstract:
In Rwanda, livestock plays an integral part in the national economy. It contributes to improve the socio-economic status and wellbeing of Rwandans, fight malnutrition, and promote food and nutrition security. Over the past 2 decades, the government of Rwanda, in collaboration with different actors and stakeholders, has put in place strategic and implementation plans to strengthen livestock production in Rwanda. Although a remarkable step has been made in increasing animal productivity, there are still a lot of constraints and challenges in this sector. The scarcity of animal feeds is one of the main challenges that impair the development of the animal sector in Rwanda. In this review, the current status of the feed sector, future goals, and strategies to tackle and sustain animal feed resources in Rwanda are highly discussed. To the end of this article, some recommendations are made to the farmers, feed manufacturers and the government. Considering the available data, investment opportunities for feed production in Rwanda should be evaluated. In addition, there are significant shortcomings in the field of food safety and the provision. The development of the needs in this sector includes entrepreneurship opportunities.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Despite rapid economic growth, stunting affects one third of the children under five population in Indonesia. The Government of Indonesia (GoI) realizing the problem, established the National Strategy to Accelerate Stunting Prevention as a national priority program for 2017 to 2021. The GoI plans to maximize the use of resources, policies, and programs that encompasses nutrition-specific and sensitive interventions directed to the first 100 days of life. This study aimed to explore the extent of program planning, budgeting, and implementation related to stunting prevention at district and village level as well as to understand the challenges presented to converge intervention. Subjects and Method: A case study with ecological approach was conducted in 10 villages from five districts in Indonesia. The study method included focus group discussions with 70 district officials and 100 village representatives, interviews with 12 key informants from district planning agency, document analysis, and reflective journaling. The data were reported descriptively. Results: Most head districts, officials from relevant departments and village leaders committed to stunting prevention following the vice president decree of stunting as a national priority. As a result, programs and budget were in place and local initiatives to prevent stunting were on the rise. Despite the commitment, many expressed ambivalences and disregarded the issue as a mere short stature (genetic variation). Thus, problems related to efficiency, coverage, and sustainability persists as maintaining motivation among staffs were difficult. In some settings, the situation was exacerbated by factors such as high financial dependency, misconception, and poor gender relation. Conclusion: The policy and programs to control stunting among children in Indonesia are in place. However, challenges occur due to the complexity in governance system as well as lack of political will. Better communication and cooperation are essential for well implemented policies. The introduction of unprocessed organic waste into the soil leads to the accumulation of nutrition elements for their subsequent assimilation by plants in the land-use system from the organomineral complexes of the soil, which will significantly increase the yield of agricultural crops. However, for 2- 3 years with constant introduction of "raw" manure, soil degradation occurs. So, with the constant introduction of "fresh" litter will be the oppression of cultivated plants by "osmosis" and the subsequent destruction of their root rot due to its high content of raw litter of pathogenic organisms and high level of Pro-infectious potential, which reduces fungistasis soil, leading to lower yields. The cardinal way out of this situation is to add composted manure to the soil. In addition to increasing the content of organic matter in the soil, including humus. Due to this, there is a decrease in osmosis and phytopathogenic load. The biological activity of the soil when composting will be slightly lower than when applying " raw " manure. However, due to this fact, in the following years, when using complex compost, the soil will contain more organic matter compared to the control. In addition," full "composting reduces "osmosis", kills weed seeds and destroys potentially dangerous pathogens of agricultural crops. Based on the above, it can be assumed that the introduction of new organic fertilizers should have a multi-sided effect on the agronomic properties of the soil, which in the end, with the correct use of complex compost, dramatically increases the yield of crops, including cereals.

Abstract:
An increased incidence of bleeding episodes due to hypopro-thrombinaemia has been associated with several cephalosporins especially those which contain an N-methyl-thio-tetrazole (NMTT) side chain. To study the etiology of cephalosporin-induced hypo-prothrombinaemia in the clinical situation we have investigated the ability of different cephalosporins to alter the metabolism of vitamin K and the relationship between hypoprothrombinaemia and vitamin K status as assessed from plasma levels of vitamin K. Cephalosporins containing an NMTT side chain (latamoxef, cefmenoxime, cefoperazone, cefotetan, cefamandole) or related structure (cefozolin) all caused the transient plasma appearance of vitamink1 2,3-epoxide in response to a 10 mg intravenous dose of vitamin ; those without NMTT (cefotaxime and cefoxitin) did not. The plasma accumulation of vitamin k1 2,3-epoxide was qualitatively similar to, but quantitatively less than, that produced by the oral anticoagulant phenprccoumon. In 36 patients eating normally, the median endogenous plasma vitamin k1 (370 pg/ml) was not significantly different from that in healthy, fasting subjects (372 pg/ml) and clotting tests remained consistently normal for all antibiotics tested. In 22 patients on total parenteral nutrition the median plasma vitamin k1. (223 pg/ml) was significantly lower than normal (p &lt; 0.01) with 61patients having levels below the normal range (&lt; 150 pg/ml) but normal clotting before starting antibiotic therapy. All 7 parenterally-fed patients treated with latamoxef developed hypoprothrombinaemia (as shown by prothrombin time, PIVKA-II and protein C measurements) within 4 days whereas 12 patients treated with cefotaxime or cefoxitin did not. Latamoxef-associated hypoprothrombinaemia was readily reversible by 1 mg of vitamin k1 given intravenously but hypoprothrombinaemia and sub-normal plasma vitamin k1 could recur within 2-3 days. The data suggest that NMTT-cephalosporins are inhibitors of hepatic vitamin K epoxide reductase and that a lowered vitamin K status predisposes to hypoprothrombinaemia.

Zibani, Nadia. Ishraq: Safe spaces to learn, play and grow: Expansion of recreational sports program for adolescent rural girls in Egypt. Population Council, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/pgy22.1003.

Abstract:
Over the past three years, the Ishraq program in the villages of northern El-Minya, Egypt, grew from a novel idea into a vibrant reality. In the process, approximately 300 rural girls have participated in a life-transforming chance to learn, play, and grow into productive members of their local communities. Currently other villages—and soon other governorates—are joining the Ishraq network. Ishraq is a mixture of literacy, life-skills training, and—for girls who have been sheltered in domestic situations of poverty and isolation—a chance to play sports and games with other girls their age and develop a sense of self-worth and mastery; the program reinforces the lessons they receive in life-skills classes about hygiene, nutrition, and healthy living. This guide to the sports and games component of the program is geared to the needs of disadvantaged adolescent girls. It is intended for those in the development community interested in the potential of sports to enhance the overall impact of adolescent programs. Sports can be combined with other program components to give girls a more active experience, whether the primary focus is reproductive health, literacy, or livelihood skills.
