Abstract Objectives The objective of this study was to characterize the food environment of an informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya according to the obesogenic properties and spatial distribution of informal food vendors. Methods From July 15 to August 9, 2019, we identified 524 vendors in the informal settlement of Kibera. Guided by the NOVA classification system for food processing, we dichotomized foods sold into categories of high- vs. low-risk and protective vs. non-protective with respect to their propensity to promote weight gain. Then, we classified vendors into obesogenic risk groups

Abstract:
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES This research emerges from Lesotho's diverse landscapes, where children’s stories remain largely unheard in the realm of health policy. The study aims to harness these narratives to drive equity, inclusivity, and human rights in health interventions, positioning youth not just as beneficiaries but as active participants in all health interventions. METHODS This research represents a meta-analysis of a larger, cross-sectional, qualitative research project, focused on understanding childrens’ narratives and experiences on their health and wellbeing. Scientific evidence shows that dietary patterns are associated with the risk of IBD, particularly among unhealthy and Western dietary patterns. However, Western dietary patterns are not exclusive to Western countries, as Jordanians are steadily moving towards a Western lifestyle, which includes an increased consumption of processed foods. This study aims to investigate the association between dietary patterns and the risk factors for IBD cases among Jordanian adults. This case-control study was conducted between November 2018 and December 2019 in the largest three hospitals in Jordan. Three hu

Chia seed oil represents an important vegetal source of ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) being very susceptible to lipid oxidation. Emulsion-based delivery systems could constitute a tool for its protection and incorporation into foods. In this study chia bilayer O/W emulsions were obtained by layer-by-layer deposition technique (LBL). It consisted of the electrostatic deposition of positively charged chitosan on negatively charged oil droplets being stabilized with modified sunflower lecithins. The effect of pH of emulsions was also evaluated. The particle size distribution, mean diam

BACKGROUND AND AIMS International guidelines on infant feeding in emergencies advise protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding (BF) for all infants in these settings. The re-establishment of exclusive BF (EBF) is also a central part of the management of acutely malnourished infants under six months old. More evidence on the feasibility, acceptance, and impact of BF promotion and support during emergencies is needed. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) runs a nutrition project in Maiduguri, a protracted emergency setting in North-East Nigeria. This study aimed to explore caregivers' (CGs)

Abstract:
This study aims to estimate the short-term impact of the recent rounds of food price inflation and the COVID-19 crisis by estimating a household food demand system converted to energy and nutrient intakes. It demonstrates that recent food and nutrition surveys conducted by the Philippine government are a valuable source of information about household behavior and the impact of economic shocks. It offers a novel methodology for incorporating computing selection effects in determinants in estimating price and income elasticities. The study was nevertheless able to determine that the COVID-19 soc

Food is an essential to our existence but under certain conditions it could become the origin to the accumulative health damages. Technological processes as heating, chopping, mincing, grounding, promote the lipid oxidation process in muscle tissues and meat foodstuffs. Lipid oxidation occurred rapidly in turkey muscle, intermediate in duck, and slowest in chicken during frozen storage. Depletion of tocopherol during frozen storage was more rapid in turkey and duck compared to chicken. These processes developed from lipid peroxides produce many cytotoxic compounds including malondialdehyde (MD

The Philippine government's long-term vision, AmBisyon Natin 2040, aims for a prosperous, predominantly middle-class society where no one is poor. The Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028 emphasizes strategies to develop and protect individual and family capabilities by reducing vulnerabilities and strengthening social protection. While official poverty statistics indicate progress in poverty reduction at the aggregate level, with poverty incidence declining to 16.4 percent in the first semester of 2023, standard measurement approaches may mask significant inequalities in resource allocation

This rapid review synthesises evidence on key aspects of mainstreaming institutional resilience and systems strengthening in donor policies and programming in FCAS (Fragile and Conflict-affect States) contexts, particularly in nutrition (food security), health, WASH and the economic sector. Institutional resilience is the ability of a social system (society, community, organisation) to absorb and recover from external shocks, while positively adapting and transforming to address long-term changes and uncertainty. The border between Chad and Sudan has long been a turbulent space where conflict and violence in either country has often forced populations across the border to seek safety. Since April 2023, the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan has forced large numbers of Sudanese civilians to flee their homes in search of safety. While all refugees share the need for emergency assistance, research has shown that women and girls encounter specific challenges accessing food and nutrition, sexual and reproductive healthcare, water, sanitation and hygiene, and mat
