This paper discusses the synthesis and structure of a complex compound based on 3,5-diamino-1H-1,2,4-triazole (guanazole) with gallium ions, formed by the interaction of anhydrous gallium (III) chloride and guanazole in dried methanol. We propose an approach to non-deterministic finite automaton (NFA) inductive synthesis that is based on answer set programming (ASP) solvers. To that end, we explain how an NFA and its response to input samples can be encoded as rules in a logic program. The lack of pollination and the effects of blossom thinners were simulated by enclosing selected `McIntosh' apple spurs in super-light insect barrier netting at the pink stage of flower development. Fruit set was recorded and fruit size measured at 2- to 3-day intervals from petal fall until initial set. The effects of lack of pollination or the use of blossom thinners on initial set could not be determined with any degree of accuracy until at least 8 days after petal fall. Abstract:
The chapter introduces theoretical features of n-tuple algebra developed by the authors as a theoretical generalization of structures and methods applied in intelligence systems. NTA supports formalization of a wide set of logical problems (abductive and modified conclusions, modeling of graphs, semantic networks, expert rules, etc.). This chapter contains main definitions and theorems of NTA. Unlike relational algebra and theory of binary relations, NTA uses Cartesian product of sets rather than sequences of elements (elementary n-tuples) as a basic structure and implements a general theory of n-ary relations. Novelty of our approach is that we developed some new mathematical structures allowing to implement many techniques of semantic and logical analyses; these methods have no analogies in conventional theories.

This chapter considers the National Rifle Association (NRA) as not merely a lobbying outfit, trade association, or hobbyist group, but as a full-fledged mediasphere. Since the early 2000s, the NRA has aggressively expanded its footprint within the broader right-wing media environment—it publishes four print magazines and a highly integrated array of micro-targeted online print and video content, social media platforms, and original online television programming. Via a content analysis of NRA.org, a site that aggregates and prioritizes content from across the group’s multimedia platforms, this chapter employs critical discourse analysis to illuminate the site’s populist themes and rhetorical styles. It finds that the NRA combines the trappings of news genres and right-wing discourses with populist modes of expression to amplify and reinforce the deep affective ties between gun ownership and conservative political identity.

Chapter 2, “Mourning the Erotic in René Maran’s Batouala,” places erotic practice and imagination at the heart of Afro-diasporic and African relations. Maran was born in Martinique and wrote Batouala (1921) while a French colonial official in Central Africa. The novel centers on a love triangle that involves Batouala, the village chief; Yassigui’ndja, his first wife; and Bissibi’ngui, a young man newly emboldened by the possibilities colonialism offers for social advancement. The climax of the novel features a sexual dance, at the heart of which is Yassigui’ndja penetrating a young woman with a dildo while the community around her watches and celebrates, before being stimulated to engage in an orgy, where “every perversion” is permitted. Throughout the novel, Maran depicts Banda erotic desires and practices as incessant, insatiable, multiple, communal, and same-sex, and critiques colonialism for disrupting these erotic diversities. I argue that while the novel is set in colonial-era Africa, its representations of Banda erotic practices mourn the loss of African gendered and erotic diversity under colonial modernity. Whereas the genealogical imperative in black diaspora studies has mourned the loss of hetero-kinship, Maran’s novel mourns the loss of a broader range of libidinal freedoms. In situating erotic diversity as a site of loss and mourning, Maran provides an affective location for rapprochement between Afro-diasporic and African populations that skirts a genealogical imperative.

Abstract:
Just as sustainability has come to serve as a euphemism for profit-minded redevelopment, public participation and community engagement have become a ritualized but ultimately empty performance of democracy and shared decision making. This chapter examines how environmental justice activists have navigated the nonprofit funding system and the constant pressure to participate in various forms of citizen engagement. These have included requests from academics wishing to further institutional missions that emphasize public engagement. They also included invitations to sit on steering committees, to attend countless public hearings, to submit public testimonies about new development projects, to participate in urban planning initiatives, and more. Activists have found that such activities drain their time and energy, siphoning it away from their long-term goals. Ultimately, rather than supporting democratic action, institutionalized forms of civic engagement have undermined democracy itself.
