We propose an approach to non-deterministic finite automaton (NFA) inductive synthesis that is based on answer set programming (ASP) solvers. To that end, we explain how an NFA and its response to input samples can be encoded as rules in a logic program. The lack of pollination and the effects of blossom thinners were simulated by enclosing selected `McIntosh' apple spurs in super-light insect barrier netting at the pink stage of flower development. Fruit set was recorded and fruit size measured at 2- to 3-day intervals from petal fall until initial set. The effects of lack of pollination or the use of blossom thinners on initial set could not be determined with any degree of accuracy until at least 8 days after petal fall. Biennial bearing of apple trees can be overcome either by the use of a blossom chemical thinner or by early application of a postbloom thinner. Carbaryl (Sevin) is a post-bloom fruit-thinning chemical with an effective thinning period of 4 to 5 weeks after bloom. Sevin was compared in 1992 and 1993 with NAA as an early petal-fall spray. Some molecular integrals over ellipsoidal Hermite-Gaussian functions relevant for SCF calculations are considered. It appears also that this type of functions is convenient for the calculation of electric properties of molecules. Several southern magnolia (magnolia grandiflora) tree samples, with known concentrations of mercury, were analyzed using particle induced x-ray emission (PIXE) and neutron activation analysis (NAA). Results from the PIXE measurements indicate that the average mercury absorption percentage was found to be 85 ± 4%. The distribution of mercury was found to be reasonably homogeneous over the sample surface.
