Full textBackground: A new district called Vallastaden in Linköping is under construction and the residents will be moving in during 2017. The district has clearly expressed and visionary goals concerning ecological and social sustainability. Vallastaden will be unveiled to the public in an exhibition during the fall of 2017.Aim: The aim of this paper is to analyse how the physical features in a residential area can make its future inhabitants behave in more sustainable ways.Completion: This paper utilizes two methods: text analysis and hypothetical reasoning. The theoretical framework is based on economic theory, the earlier studies focus on specific areas within ecological and social sustainability. The empirics are collected from sources available to the future inhabitants of Vallastaden, the residential area we have chosen to study. They include Vallastaden’s webpage, documents and resolutions from Linköping County as well as public information from the constructors and others involved in the project. The analysis introduces three hypothetical types of individuals who pose as potential inhabitants of Vallastaden. Conclusion: City planning can change human behaviour, influencing inhabitants to behave in a more sustainable manner. It does not only depend on the physical features, but also on the institutions that will be created on different social levels. Keywords: City

Full textNowa Huta in Poland is an urban environment built from the ground up between 1949 and 1956 on the basis of socialist-realist design. The design is representative of socialist-realist urban planning from a time that combined rapid industrialization with an effort to create a new society. The city's design is interesting from an urban planning perspective as it exhibits many similarities with New urbanism and The Garden City in Ebenezer Howard's original form. Through an exploratory case study conducted through literature analysis combined with an analysis of the physical urban environment, similarities with new urbanism and the garden city emerges. One of the conclusions that can be drawn from the work is that there is no support for the description of Nowa Huta as associated with Clarence Perry's neighborhood model.

Full textIn this bachelor thesis I have studied newly constructed buildings that are built with historicizing architecture. The thesis is limited to examining the area Jakriborg, a neighborhood of medieval architecture built in 1999 in Hjärup, Skåne (Sweden). This is to gain a deeper understanding of how the older, historical references in architecture can be seen in new construction as well as to examine how Jakriborg is portrayed in the media. A conflict about Jakriborg exists, about the difference in architectural values between architects and laymen. While Jakriborg have shown to be popular among the public and Jakriborg's inhabitants, the architecture provokes some architects. The main criticism of Jakriborg is that it is pretending to be something it is not and has a design that does not reflect the present time. One of the incentives for the developer when they planned Jakriborg was their contrary-vision - a monotonous and stripped 1960-century architecture. To achieve the opposite of this they planned with keywords as variety, details, small scale constructions and mix of functions. The conclusions suggest that it is very important to create an understanding between architects, developer and the general public regarding architecture. Especially considering the importance of the design for people living and staying in the newly built areas, as well as that architecture should maintain over time.

Full textThe fast urbanisation and population growth challenges the capacities of cities. Densification in or in the proximity of established neighbourhoods is encouraged as means to achieve a sustainable future as the city grows. How to build a denser city and what consequences this has varies. This essay aims to examine the sustainability consequences of densification through a case study of an area in Sundbyberg, a part of the Stockholm region in Sweden. The study includes visualisations of four different urbanisms in the chosen area and evaluates the different proposals using a list of sustainability criteria. Of the four different urbanisms, three are identified through a literature study, and one is based on observations of the practice in the Stockholm region. The result shows great differences in terms of sustainability for the different urbanisms. It is believed that this is caused by priorities made, in planning of the built environment. The study does not present a solution but is wished to function as a guiding document on how the physical structure can impact the sustainability in the city.

Full textPlanning and development control systems must deal with many challenges. The difficulties and the impact these systems have on the physical environment make the subject constantly relevant to study and try to develop. The thesis does this by comparing the system in Sweden with that in other countries, more specifically form-based codes advocated by New Urbanism in the US and design codes in England. In a Swedish context, these codes can be compared with the building control regulations in detailed plans and guidelines in quality and design programs. With the adoption of the Government bill "Politik för gestaltad livsmiljö" in May 2018, municipalities are encouraged to develop an architectural policy at the local level. These documents are also an interesting tool in this context. The thesis’ question therefore reads: How can concepts and tools from form-based codes in the US and design codes in England develop Swedish municipalities’ architecture policies, quality programs and detailed plans? To a lesser extent, in addition to the systems in the US and England, France and the typo-morphological approach to zoning have also been included. The degree project started with a literature study and was accompanied by a few case studies that included content analysis of architectural policies, quality programs and detailed plans. The policies selected for analysis were judged to have the most in common with approaches to regulations within form-based codes and design codes. These were Örebro's and Linköping's policies and Avesta, Fagersta and Norberg’s joint policy. Detailed plans were also analysed from the first two municipalities. In addition to this, the detailed plans and quality programs for Henriksdalshamnen and Kolkajen in Stockholm were included. The content analysis of plans and programs was based on a few categories. The results from the case studies were then compared with the literature study. In parallel, an interview was also conducted with a practicing planning architect who before the interview read a limited amount of material about form-based codes. Results and analysis from the comparison and the interview then formed the basis for the formulation of recommendations. The literature study dealt with the use of codes throughout the history, the development and definitions of form-based codes and design codes, as well as how these are organized. Furthermore, the literature study included criticism of these and the connection to urban morphology in relation to the French typo-morphological approach to zoning. Finally, design issues linked to building regulation were also dealt with in the Swedish planning process. The comparison between the content analysis of the selected cases and the literature study showed differences and similarities between what is treated and how this is done within form-based and design codes and plans and programs in Sweden. The results from the analysis of the architecture policies showed similarities with form-based codes and design codes that could be strengthened. In this respect, Örebro’s architectural strategy especially distinguished, which, like the practice in form-based codes and design codes, divided the city into different area types. The two quality programs that were analysed differed in nature, which was linked to the process in which they were designed. In comparison, the program for Kolkajen turned out to have more in common with form-based codes and design codes than the program for Henriksdalshamnen. The interview shed light on perspectives on the content of plans and programs, the context in which plans, and programs are produced and operate as well as views on form-based codes. The recommendations developed consisted of 19 aspects. These can be dealt with at an overall level for different area types in an architecture policy like Örebro’s architecture strategy. In addition, a table was developed with recommendations for what can be dealt with in detailed plans and quality programs depending on the location of the area in the city. The idea is that these should have a direct connection to the area types in the policy like form-based codes and design codes, but a more flexible one as the area type should be more precisely defined in the detail plan. This could offer a way for municipalities to act proactively instead of reactively to individual development proposals. Finally, the literature study also showed the advantages of applying simple, principled illustrations, which can be done to a greater extent in policies, programs, and detailed plans in Sweden.
