Full textProcess industries have to strive to attain high resource utilization so as to increase their productivity and competitiveness in the market. Many indicators have been used to measure their manufacturing performance, one of them is the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). However, high OEE values per se do not ensure superior global performance. Some authors suggest that the consideration of indicators with broader magnitude such as Overall Plant Effectiveness (OPE) is more appropriate to measure and analyze the overall manufacturing performance since it also reflects the impacts of support areas on a plant\'s capacity utilization. This research reviews the application of OEE in companies that depend heavily on the ability to rationalize the utilization of their production capacity and explores the use of indicators derived from it. With this purpose, a literature review is presented to identify the limitations of OEE, to enumerate indicators derived from OEE and characterize them as management tools that may offer a more global perspective to the measurement of capacity utilization. Moreover, a case study is developed in a food processing company to identify how the diverse agents responsible for the losses in production capacity including those who perform beyond the manufacturing function, can be involved in the effort to eliminate or control this problem. The study shows that the use of OPE besides OEE can make the detection of the root cause of problems more effective and induce the integration of manufacturing strategy with other functional strategies, and thus promote the increase of overall manufacturing performance.

Full textThe camshaft is a mechanically rotating component found in most engines and manufacturedat one of the lines at Scania Södertälje. Scania highly values productivity and despite some of the better results the Camshaft-line still does not live up to the productivity goals of the company. The purpose of this thesis project was to evaluate why that is and to bring forth suggestions of how higher productivity can be achieved. Integral to the work were the three productivity measures OPE, OEE and JPH. The first two measure the productivity of the line against its capacity while the latter measures said capacity. Actions were also taken to ensure that the Scania Production System guidelines were followed and tools such as Lean and Value Stream Mapping were used to help guide the work. The current software for logging stops was also analysed and discussed in relation to the new system currently undergoing implementation, EBBA. The three productivity measures OPE, OEE and JPH were calculated for the last twelve months. The information received from this was then supplemented with workshop practice, a literature study as well as interviews with Scania employees. All data was compiled and discussed in relation to its effect on productivity. The result was three clear conclusions. More production time than necessary is planned, resulting in low utilization. Many of the day to day standards are not sufficient or respected, resulting in difficulties in analysis and lower productivity. Also, the new system will simplify logging of stops assuming clear standards are set up for how this is to be used. Finally recommendations are made that the planning capacity is increased, that the standards are reworked and efforts are made to ensure the new system is used to its full potential. It is also suggested that further work is done by redoing the analysis after implementation of the new system as well as if the planning capacity is increased.

Full textThe examination project was carried out in the autumn of 2020 at Scania IndustrialMaintenance in Södertälje. The work has focused on two departments within the production sections Transmission processing and Engine processing, one department from each production section. In the Transmission processing, the Hard Gear section was examined, and in the engine-section was DMAHB examined. The main goal of the examination project is to define technical availability for Scania as far as possible based on production and maintenance data. With the help of maintenance engineers, maintenance technicians and previous experience from working at Scania, information and process knowledge has been acquired through visits and interviews. Data from each line have been analyzed and literature studies have been done to gain an in-depth understanding of the problem. The current situation in production and maintenance has provided an overall picture of the problems with defining technical availability. Most factors have been considered such as culture, lack of resources, key-figures, and standards. Measurement of technical availability can be done in several ways according to Swedish maintenance standards, which is addressed in the work. What in this work is considered suitable for Scania is to start from the operating time and time for restoration to obtain the impact of maintenance on production. To achieve this, Scania needs to start measuring the operating time of each machine and improve the reporting of downtime.

Bakgrund: Nytt fokus på kunden innebär att företag mer på en individuell nivå ska förstå kunden och dennes kräsenhet för att villkor och behov lättare ska kunna tillgodoses. Innebörden av detta leder till ett arbetssätt för marknadsföring som har blivit ett alltmer vanligt begrepp, nämligen one-to-one marketing, och som är myntat av Peppers och Rogers. De har teoretiskt presenterat ett tillvägagångssätt; implementeringsprocessen, för att införa one-to-one marketing. Processen innehåller fyra steg; identifiering, differentiering, interaktion och anpassning som ska hjälpa företag att mer optimalt förstå kunden så dennes behov kan tillgodoses genom anpassning av de produkter eller tjänster som erbjuds. Att utveckla en förtroendefull och trogen relation med kunden är betydelsefullt. Extra viktigt är det vid köp av sällanköpsvaror eftersom det efter köp av dessa varor kan dröja en längre tid innan kunden förhoppningsvis söker sig tillbaka till den tidigare relationen. Sällanköpsvaror är dyra konsumentvaror som till skillnad från dagligvaror inte inhandlas lika ofta.
Syfte: Uppsatsens syfte är att, analysera hur företag som tillhandahåller sällanköpsvaror kan arbeta med implementeringsprocessen vid införandet av one-to-one marketing och hur användandet av denna process påverkar relationen med kunden. Vidare är syftet att ge förslag på såväl teoretisk utveckling som praktiska åtgärder gällande processen ur ett sällanköpsperspektiv.
Avgränsning: Uppsatsen avgränsas till att utifrån ett företag i husbyggarbranschen, Willa Nordic, inhämta data för att kunna dra slutsatser om sällanköpsvaror och implementeringsprocessen, samt dess effekter ur ett företagsperspektiv. Företaget valdes eftersom branschen är ett utmärkt exempel på sällanköpsvaror, samt på grund av att Willa Nordics erbjudande till stor del belyser vikten av att förstå kunden. Det valdes även med tanke på dess geografiska läge.
Metod: Fallstudien av Willa Nordic har genomförts genom personliga intervjuer med utvalda personer från företaget och sekundärdata från undersökningsinstitutet IMA samt relevant litteratur. Genom att deduktivt utgått från befintliga teorier om implementeringsprocessen och belysa hur dessa fenomen kan se ut i husbyggarbranschen för att sedan dra generella slutsatser om sällanköpsvaror. Uppsatsen studerar syftet ur ett företagsperspektiv.
Slutdiskussion: Implementeringsprocessens steg klarar sig inte utan varandra och de val och beslut som tas under arbetsprocessens gång påverkar vad som sker därefter. Därför är det av yttersta vikt att varje steg tas på största allvar och verkligen genomarbetas, så både företaget och kunden i slutänden får ut något positivt och värdegivande. Vi menar att processen bör utökas genom att inkludera interaktion i anslutning till identifieringssteget, eftersom en god kommunikation ger en lättare förståelse för kundernas behov. Gällande sällanköpsvaror ska inte kunder behandlas olika, eftersom urvalet av värdefulla kunder är av mindre betydelse då alla kunder ska ses som värdefulla. Att inneha en lärande relation enbart utifrån identifieringssteget är enligt oss inte möjligt, eftersom det krävs en interaktion mellan parterna för att företag ska kunna förstå och lära sig det kunden efterfrågar. Grundpelarna för lärande relationer i implementeringsprocessen är identifiering och interaktion. Eftersom skapandet av en lärande relation gör denna process möjlig är det centralt att ständigt förstå meningen med en sådan relation och försöka arbeta därefter.

Full textThe intention of this work is to draw attention to citizenship education that has become increasingly important in the creation of national unity / identity in Kenya. More specifically, it means that the work was to examine how selected Kenyan secondary school teachers are working to convey the knowledge of citizenship education to create national identity and what content is presented. Second reflection is to see if the teachers in any way invite the students to practice the knowledge that they conveyed in school on democratic rights and practice these in the society. In order to answer the survey questions, I examined the documents in the form of literature and databases, and conducted interviews, which were then analyzed. Respondents in the interviews have been asked similar questions and issues where they have been contrasted with each other to bring forth any discrepancies / affinities. One of the findings showed that citizenship educations are of immense importance in terms of forming a national identity among students. Teachers' practices consisted of simple traditional classroom where students didn’t have the chance to practice the content. Instead the teachers asked their students to use knowledge that was transmitted outside the school context, for example, in various compounds. The content revolved around trying to convey the knowledge of rights and obligations that a Kenyan citizen is holding, and also advocating nationalism and patriotism. It turned out that nationalism and patriotism were the main fragments when it came to building a national unity / identity in democratic Kenya. Full textResearch on one-to-one marketing with a focus on retailing is scarce in academic literature. The two main reasons are that the target marketing approaches proposed by researchers do not scale to the size of typical retail applications and that data regarding one-to-one marketing remain locked within retailers and marketing solution providers. This dissertation develops new descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive marketing models for automated target marketing that are based on representation learning and deep learning and studies the models’ impact in real-life applications. First, this thesis shows that representation learning is capable of analyzing market structures at scale. The proposed approach to visualizing market structures is fully automated and superior to existing mapping methods that are based on the same input data. The thesis then proposes a scalable, nonparametric model that predicts product choice for the entire assortment of a large retailer. The deep neural network outperforms benchmark methods for predicting customer purchases. Coupon policies based on the proposed model lead to substantially higher revenue lifts than policies based on the benchmark models. The remainder of the thesis studies a real-time offer engine that is based on the proposed models. The comparison of personalized promotions to non-targeted promotions shows that one-to-one marketing increases redemption rates, revenues, and profits. A study of customer responses to personalized price promotions within the retailer’s loyalty program reveals that personalized marketing also increases loyalty program usage. This illustrates how targeted price promotions can be integrated smoothly into loyalty programs. In summary, this thesis is highly relevant for both researchers and practitioners. The new deep learning models facilitate more scalable and efficient one-to-one marketing. In addition, this research offers pertinent implications for promotion management and one-to-one marketing.

This thesis examines the reasons Union soldiers voted overwhelmingly for Abraham Lincoln in the presidential election of 1864. This thesis bridges the gap between the emerging disagreements within the historiography of the soldier vote in 1864. The disagreements thus far deal with the role of emancipation in the Union soldier’s decision-making process versus the role of other issues, particularly whether or not the war effort should have been continued on to ultimate victory. By extension, the argument also deals with whether or not Union soldiers adhered to the Republican Party’s ideology in making their decision. Through analysis of primary sources including Union soldiers’ letters and diaries, the answer that emerges is that Union soldiers adhered to Republican ideology as outlined by Republican campaign materials as well as their party platform in making their decision for president. This thesis ultimately concludes that a focus on any one reason or another that soldiers chose Lincoln misses the larger picture.

Full textContexte: Bien qu'il y ait un intérêt à utiliser la simulation pour développer des aptitudes fondamentales en chirurgie, par la pratique ciblée réalisée dans un environnement sécuritaire, il n'y a toutefois que peu de consignes indiquant aux éducateurs comment intégrer adéquatement la simulation dans les programmes d'acquisition de compétences chirurgicales. Cette thèse analyse l'application du modèle de performance d'expert en chirurgie ainsi que le rôle de simulation dans l'acquisition de compétences chirurgicales. Ce document est centré sur la mise en place de la pratique délibérée en mettant l'accent sur les principes d'entrainement basé sur des compétences, l'entrainement à l'exécution de tâches partielles et le surentraînement. Dans une étude aléatoire contrôlée, nous avons étudié ces principes pour déterminer 1) si pratiquer une tâche psychomotrice de base (le transfert sur planche à chevilles, TPC) sur un simulateur FLS facilite l'acquisition de compétences plus complexes (la suture intracorporelle, SIC) et 2) nous avons comparé l'impact, sur la rétention de TPC et de l'apprentissage de SIC, de l'entrainement à un niveau d'expert et de l'entraînement à un niveau de passage. Méthodes: Des novices en chirurgie ont été aléatoirement distribués dans trois groupes d'entraînement : un groupe contrôle, un groupe d'entraînement standard et un groupe de surentraînement. Tous les participants se sont alors entraînés à réaliser des SIC. Les courbes d'apprentissage pour les SIC ont été analysées par régression non linéaire, pour estimer le plateau et les taux d'apprentissage. La rétention de compétences a été déterminée en réévaluant des participants un mois après l'entraînement. Résultats: Le plateau d'apprentissage des SIC a monté avec l'augmentation de l'entrainement au TPC. Aussi, il y a eu une tendance croissante des scores initiaux des SIC et les taux d'apprentissage ont été plus rapides avec l'augmentation de l'entraînement au TPC. Pour la rétention, il n'y a eu aucune différence entre les scores de TPC. De plus, quoique les participants surentraînés au TPC ont nécessité moins de temps pour l'entrainement des SIC comparativement au groupe de contrôle, le surentraînement au TPC a pris plus de temps que le temps qu'il n'en a gagné lors de l'entraînement aux SIC. Conclusion: Chez les novices en chirurgie, lorsque réalisé seul, l'entrainement au transfert sur planche à cheville, pour la réalisation de tâches partielles, a été associé à une faible élévation de la courbe d'apprentissage pour les sutures intracorporelles. Toutefois, le surentraînement au transfert sur planche à cheville n'a pas amélioré la rétention de compétence. Enfin, l'entrainement sur planche à cheville seul ne s'est avéré être une stratégie efficace pour apprendre à réaliser des sutures intracorporelles.

Erbjudandena är ämnade att påverka relationen positivt och göra kunden lojal till leverantören. Nya tekniska hjälpmedel har medfört att information om kundens preferenser kan lagras och bearbetas för att därefter användas till att utforma dessaerbjudanden. ”One-to-one marketing” är dock förknippat med vissa svårigheter och problem. Ett specialanpassat erbjudande kan uppfattas felaktigt och integritetskränkande mot kunden och på såsätt påverka relationen negativt. Vi har studerat ICAs ”One-to-one marketing”-kampanj ”Mina varor” för att se huruvida denna stärker relationen till ICAs stamkunder eller om kampanjen inverkat negativt på relationen.Vi har utifrån en enkätundersökning kommit fram till att vårt urval av respondenter främst haft åsikter om utformningen av rabatterna. De problem som uppfattats av stamkunderna i denna undersökning har främst varit relaterade till att rabatterna uppfattats som konstiga och inte representativa.Uppsatsen indikerar på att detta bör förbättras för att kampanjen ska bli mer effektiv. Integritetsproblemet kommenterades endast av ett fåtal respondenter och har i denna uppsats inte visat sig som ett stort problem. Inga stora risker att relationen har försämrats med stamkunderna kan ses och undersökningen visade generellt positiva svar för ICAs del. Kampanjen kan dock förbättras genom mer representativa personliga rabatter samt att ICA med ytterligare dialog kan binda lojala kunder starkaretill relationen.

This paper will attempt to develop a new paradigm that more fully explains the rationale and objectives of the One Belt One Road initiative. It argues that nation-building is the most comprehensive way to understand the Chinese government's intentions with OBOR. The complexity of the school, society and policy, and dominant cultural beliefs about teaching, learning, and knowledge constrain people's mindsets, paradoxically preventing the fundamental changes that can take advantage of new technologies and address the inadequacies of current educational systems. The same constraints permeate reform efforts as most often the educational establishment tests the transformation of the system one element at a time while attempting to hold all other elements constant, thereby inhibiting more profound changes. The promise of one-to-one computer infrastructure provides such a dramatic alternative to current educational systems that it forces us to think about change at a deeper level, leaving us with the challenge of where to begin. The fundamental aim of this thesis is to study the potential of the one-to-one computer infrastructure as a catalyst for change. This thesis presents a holistic model for rural school that builds on a rich body of Constructionist learning research. Key components of the holistic model are: sufficient amount of student-owned technology which can accompany them as they interact at home and in the broader community; activities that are designed with sufficient scope to encourage the appropriation of powerful ideas; and, teacher engagement in activity design with simultaneous support from a knowledge network of local and international colleagues and mentors. I introduce the concept of "whole-project" learning, which strategically integrates the elements of the model, and introduces a learning approach that is fundamentally different from the existent methodology of work.
(cont.) The thesis findings rely on data collected during the one year intervention. This longitudinal study of a one-teacher school in Costa Rica over the course of the year allows me to present stories of change as well as a more quantitative analysis of the learning activities. The results of the study suggest that in order for appropriation to occur, three conditions are salient: computational technology must be mobile and owned by the students so that learning becomes integral to the culture of the community; activities need to be of a scale and quality that children and teachers can make rich connections to powerful ideas; and, participation and voice must be inclusive.

Full textO outplacement é uma técnica de gestão de recursos humanos que tem como intuito auxiliar o colaborador em transição na carreira a ultrapassar o trauma do despedimento e a encontrar uma nova colocação. O presente estudo tem como objectivo caracterizar o outplacement, descrever as suas novas tendências, e também comparar as suas práticas entre Portugal e o Reino Unido através de estudos de caso. Optou-se pela pesquisa qualitativa, devido ao seu carácter descritivo e exploratório. Os resultados evidenciam semelhanças e diferenças no que concerne as práticas do outplacement nos dois países. A composição dos programas de outplacement e uso de indicadores para a medição da sua eficácia, a abordagem directa ao cliente enquanto estratégia de marketing, a complexidade do perfil do consultor de outplacement e a relação de proximidade que se estabelece entre o mesmo e o candidato, bem como o incentivo a comunicação contínua, são práticas de outplacement comuns a Portugal e ao Reino Unido. Foi ainda possível constatar que as principais diferenças entre os dois países se relacionam com a duração dos programas, uso exclusivo da tecnologia, existência de um mercado mais competitivo no Reino Unido e consequente maior necessidade de diferenciação por parte das empresas britânicas. Por fim, concluiu-se que o principal desafio que as empresas de outplacement enfrentam nos dias de hoje consiste na necessidade de educar o mercado acerca do real valor desta prática, articulada às vantagens da consultoria one-to-one.
Outplacement is a human resource management practice which intends to assist employees in career transition to overcome the trauma of redundancy and find a new job. The present study aims to characterize outplacement, describe it?s new trends, and compare it?s practices between Portugal and the United Kingdom. Given the lack of in-depth knowledge on this subject in Portugal, it was resorted to qualitative research, due to its descriptive and exploratory nature. The method of investigation chosen was conducting case studies, related to companies analyzed in both countries. The results show similarities and differences concerning outplacement practices in both countries. The composition of outplacement programs and use of indicators to measure its effectiveness, the direct approach to customers as a marketing strategy, the outplacement consultant profile complexity and the close relationship established between consultant and candidate as well as encouraging continuous communication are common outplacement practices in Portugal and the United Kingdom. It was further established that the main differences between the two countries relate to program duration, exclusive use of the technology, the existence of a competitive market in the UK and consequently a greater need for differentiation by British companies. Finally, it is concluded that the main challenges that outplacement companies face nowadays is the need of educating the market about the real value of this practice, articulated to the benefits of one-to-one consulting.
