Seit 50 Jahren leistet das OAI einen aktiven Beitrag zum grenzüberschreitenden Kulturaustausch. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem wissenschaftlichen Dialog zum chinesischen Sozialreformer der 4.-Mai-Bewegung und späteren Musikwissenschaftler Wang Guangqi, der im frühen 20. Jahrhundert zum Studium China verließ und nach Deutschland aufbrach.
