Abstract:
Background: Obesity and overweight are strongly linked to developing diabetes, hypertension, myocardial infarction, stroke, and endocrine disorders. Knowledge, attitude, and practices of the public are crucial in limiting the burden of obesity in the Indian community. The current study aims to assess the KAP of obesity among the general public of India. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in the rural and urban areas of Tirupati city. Adults aged 18 years or above who are willing to participate, were included. A total of 300 subjects were enrolled and data was collected by using a pre-validated questionnaire. Variables like weight, height and KAP scores were obtained. Chi-square tests were used to associate demographics with good KAP towards obesity. Results: The findings show that more than half of the participants have good knowledge, and a positive attitude, but the practices are not optimal in dealing with obesity and management. Participants’ ages more than 40 years, presence of comorbidity, risk factors, and social habits are significantly associated with obesity and overweight. Obese are having good knowledge but normal-weight people are significantly associated with a positive attitude. Participants of normal weight, no risk factor, and no habits were significantly associated with rational practices. Conclusions: The study concludes that the participants had good knowledge and attitude toward obesity but the participants failed to practice controlling and preventing obesity. However, more efforts are required in creating awareness and educating the general population regarding physical activity, diet, and lifestyle in preventing obesity and its associated complications.

Abstract:
Background One of the largest hazards to human health is obesity, which is intimately related to sedentarism and physical inactivity. Understanding the perspectives and attitudes of adults with overweight or obesity towards their lifestyle choices related to sedentary behavior and physical activity is essential for mitigating associated health risks. Objective This systematic review aims to collate the extent of qualitative research on the perception of sedentary behavior and physical activity among adults with overweight and obesity. Methods A comprehensive search of Scopus, PubMed, CINAHL, and Web of Science, databases was conducted, which yielded 2,881 articles. A total of 2591 abstracts were screened, and 45 full-text articles were examined. A total of nine qualitative studies involving adults with overweight or obesity (BMI > 25 kg/m2) were included in this systematic review. Data extraction utilized Rayyan.qcri.org software, and studies were critically appraised using Joanna Briggs’s Institute checklist for qualitative research. Results The included studies revealed a diverse array of themes, wherein a few perceived factors reported towards sedentary behavior were lack of awareness about the hazards, mode of relaxation, family commitment, technology use, motivation deficits, and fatigue. Barriers to physical activity encompassed social, cultural, and environmental factors. In contrast, peer support, fitness facility access, accountability, mental health awareness, well-being, and weight management facilitate physical activity involvement. Conclusion Perceptions in overweight and obese adults on sedentary living and exercise are intricate and multifaceted. This review provides valuable insights that can inform clinicians and researchers in promoting regular physical activity for adults with overweight and obesity.

Abstract:

Overweight and obesity rates are an epidemic in the United States (U.S.) with these rates increasing dramatically in recent decades (Sogari et al., 2018). According to McEligot et al. (2020) college students classified as overweight and/or obese in the U.S. increased from 29% to 32.5% from 2000 to 2009. College is a critical time for young adults in terms of dietary choices and the relationship between students and weight gain. The purpose of this DNP project was to assess if undergraduate healthcare students in the Midwest showed poor nutritional dietary habits and showed a willingness to change their poor habits for a healthier lifestyle. The data would be used to assist the college healthcare clinic in providing proper nutritional awareness and guidance for the students. Undergraduate nursing students at a Midwest university completed an assessment tool, in the form of a 16-question Rapid Eating and Activity Assessment for Patients, Abbreviated Version (REAPS) survey that assessed their knowledge regarding nutrition and their food choices. Each question had a numeric scale (1-3) scoring system with defined results. The descriptive statistics tool in SPSS was used for analysis of the survey results. This study showed that 62.43% of the responses from undergraduate nursing students that were surveyed had poor dietary habits. 96.29% of the students that were surveyed did have a willingness to change in order to have a healthier lifestyle. Undergraduate healthcare students would benefit from increased nutritional awareness while on and off campus. The college health clinic can help promote a healthy lifestyle and decrease obesity related illnesses for students. There are numerous opportunities for colleges to promote nutritional awareness among their student body.

Abstract:
Introduction: Obesity is a major public health concern in Bangladesh, driven by socioeconomic factors, lifestyle choices, physical activity levels, and demographics. The influence of technology and industrialization has disrupted behavioral patterns among rural residents, leading to increased susceptibility to weight gain and non-communicable diseases. To gain precise insights, a cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the prevalence of obesity and identify specific risk factors among rural adults. Methods: From September to November 2022, this study was carried out at the Rajshahi Medical College's Department of Community Medicine. Data were gathered by conducting face-to-face interviews with the rural adult population of Puthia Upazilla, Rajshahi, aged 18 to 59.In all, 548 people from Rajshahi's Puthia Upazilla took part in the survey. Result: In this study, respondents had a mean age of 38.84 (±12) years. About 39.78% were overweight, and 14.23% were obese based on BMI. The mean BMI was 25.07 (±5.17) kg/m². Around 20.9% of males and 27.9% of females had a higher risk based on waist-hip ratio. Approximately 43.6% were highly active, while 36.86% had low physical activity levels. About 1.6% reported taking anti-depressant drugs. Around 31.4% consumed fried food 1 to 3 times weekly, and 35.2% drank milk occasionally. Regarding salt intake, 32.1% added salt daily to their meals. The relationship between physical activity and BMI (p<.001) and between physical activity and waist-hip ratio (p<.001) was statistically significant in the analysis. Conclusion: This study's findings can inform policymakers about rural obesity rates and related factors. They can then take steps to raise awareness among rural populations about physical activity and healthy eating. TAJ 2023; 36: No-2: 47-56

Abstract:
Background As a result of urbanization and lifestyle modifications, the burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is rising in developing nations. These nations' scarce resources and low literacy rates make it difficult to effectively manage CVDs. For prevention efforts, knowledge of modifiable risk factors is essential. The purpose of this study was to evaluate knowledge levels among people who had their first acute myocardial infarction and to identify variables related to a thorough comprehension of modifiable CVD risk factors. Methods In a cardiovascular disease centre in Lahore, Pakistan, a cross-sectional study was carried out. Anyone who was admitted to the hospital with an acute myocardial infarction diagnosis was eligible to participate. To assess knowledge of modifiable risk factors, such as fatty food consumption, smoking, obesity, and inactivity, a structured questionnaire was given to participants. For analysis, descriptive statistics were employed. Results 80 participants were included; 60% of them were men, and their average age was 50.2 years. Participants demonstrated good knowledge of smoking and exercise, but there were misconceptions about eating fatty foods and becoming obese. Moreover, the general Pakistani population's knowledge levels were consistent across studies. Conclusion While participants demonstrated reasonable knowledge of modifiable risk factors for CVDs, there were gaps in understanding, particularly related to fatty food consumption, obesity, and exercise. Targeted educational interventions and awareness campaigns are needed to address these gaps and promote healthier lifestyle choices. Increased knowledge can contribute to better prevention and management of CVDs. Keywords Cardiovascular Diseases, Health Education, Knowledge, Risk Factors.
