Li, X. "Intelligent object-oriented modelling." Thesis, Swansea University, 1998. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.637900.

Abstract:
Intelligent object-oriented modelling is a technique for organizing heterogeneous knowledge in a uniform way. It is concerned with three aspects of engineering applications: the independence of modelling from simulation, object-oriented paradigm and knowledge-based systems. The thesis investigates these three aspects and addresses their practically usable concepts. A model of engineering modelling is decomposed into a trinity of descriptions: static, dynamic and functional, which are all needed for a complete model presentation. An object-oriented information model is designed using OMT for the purpose of model development along this line. A model development scheme is proposed to formalize the modelling process and a knowledge representation scheme is suggested to classify the modelling process. A co-operation scheme is presented as a unified approach of both these schemes. An application architecture with a multidisciplinary shell on top of an object-oriented kernel is proposed to combine knowledge-based modelling and object-oriented modelling with conventional tools. A prototype system has been implemented in Kappa. The prototype system structure has been considered in the context of both the modelling process and the knowledge functionality. The thesis concludes that intelligent technologies are natural tools for concurrent engineering applications and are not only suited to inductive approaches and qualitative representations but also to deductive methodologies and quantitative descriptions.

Kemp, Graham James Laurence. "Protein modelling using an object-oriented database." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1991. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.292694.

Abstract:
This thesis describes extensions to an object-oriented database, and the use and benefits of the resulting system in protein structure analysis and homology modelling. An object-oriented database based on a semantic data model (the functional data model) is used to store protein structure data. The logic programming language Prolog, together with the object-oriented database, is useful in protein structure analysis applications that require a combination of data retrieval and calculation. This is demonstrated by the implementation of a procedure for identifying clusters of interacting residues in hydrophobic protein cores. Knowledge of the three-dimensional structure of a protein is important to a full understanding of its function. Experimental determination of a protein's structure is a slow and difficult process, so there is a demand to be able to generate hypothetical computer models of proteins. Homology modelling is the process of constructing a model of a protein based on predicted similarity to a protein with a known structure. A homology modelling system is described in which the object-oriented database is used to manage working data generated during the modelling process. The organisation of this working data is described. Both the database system and the Daplex query language have been extended to support parameterised action methods. These are pieces of code, typically for generating a display or performing database updates, that are stored in the database with the data. Tasks performed in homology modelling are expressed as action methods, and can be invoked using Daplex. The utility of the homology modelling system is demonstrated by the construction of models of domains II and VI of the complement proteins Cls and Clr.

This Master thesis presents the utilization in transport modeling the new paradigm in software development, the Object Oriented Program (OOP). The using of OOP seeks improve the flexibility, productivity and efficiency in software developed under such principles. This will be done thought its characteristics: inheritance, polymorphism and encapsulation. The application of the OOP principles has been done adjusting the software TRAFFIC, developed in the University of Montreal. The model will be used like a decision making tool for the urban network transportation planning, ai a strategic level. The software assigns vehicle flows on road networks in order to minimize the user cost, following the first Wardrop`s principle. This research has been based on the Fusion method, that presents a systematic approach for development of object oriented software. The method also is directed toward the requirements of development with and for reutilization. The study will be developed at the level of analysis, project and implementation.

Lu, Quilisch Angela. "Object Oriented Modelling and Simulation of Kaplan Turbines." Thesis, KTH, Reglerteknik, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-105879.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is twofold. The first and major one is to develop an objectoriented Kaplan turbine model to support control design for hydropower systems. The model is developed in the Modelica language and implemented in the Dymola simulation environment. Using the equation-based modelling formalism of Modelica, the model exploits water flow and pressure balance equations to capture the relationship between the hydraulic and mechanical energy. A particular feature of the model is a detailed description of how the water flow and turbine torque are affected by the wicket gate and turbine runner blade angles. The second aim of the thesis is to demonstrate how the Kaplan turbine model can be used to design hydropower control systems. To this end, a relatively complete hydropower system model is developed using the model components and several dam control strategies are evaluated. This study clearly demonstrates the utility of the model in the design of hydropower control systems.

Abstract:
To cope with the growing demands for simulation models of ever increasing complex industrial systems, the research community effort has been mainly focused in creating different software tools which simplify the modeling process. This work describes how the Object-Oriented Modeling language PML (Physical Modeling Language) automates the modeling process by using physical knowledge in order to set the mathematical model of the system. PML introduces new modular structures to represent the physical knowledge required to model a system, making a clear separation between the physical behaviour representation (declarative knowledge) and the computational aspects of model simulation (procedural knowledge).
