Lloyd, da Silva Mary C. "Self and (m)other in Patrick White's fiction : an object relations approach." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 1995. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1178.

Abstract:
This thesis offers a new interpretation of Patrick White's novels, using Object Relations psychology. Object Relations psychology differs from Freudian psychology in that it shifts the focus of attention from notions of the Oedipal conflict and repression to issues of nurturing and relationships. This study charts the development of the Whitean protagonist across a selection of novels. The focus of my thesis is White's developing protagonist, and no attempt is made to offer a psychological profile of Patrick White himself. The thesis first surveys a representative sampling of existing critical material. It then defines the theoretical framework of the study and, finally, it applies this framework to the novels.

Rebillet, Susan Bates. "Object Relations Correlates on the MMPI." Thesis, North Texas State University, 1987. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc330987/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was undertaken to help determine the usefulness of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) for providing information regarding a person's object relations. Subjects were 136 college students (56 males, 80 females) ranging in age from 18 to 48. Subjects were administered the Rorschach, the Self Object Scale (SOS), and the MMPI. The Rorschach was scored using Blatt, Brenneis, Schimek, and Glick's (1976a) manual for scoring the level of object relations (Developmental Analysis of the Concept of the Object Scale-DACOS), the SOS scored as Blatt, Chevron, Quinlan, and Wein's manual (1981) directs, and the MMPI scored in the standardized manner using college-age norms. MANOVA's on the SOS and the DACOS resulted in significant effects for sex on MMPI scales 6, 7, and 8. Sex differences on MMPI scales 6 and 4 were obtained for high/low level of object relations on the DACOS. Pearson correlations showed positive correlations for males between level of object relations on the SOS and MMPI scale 5, and negative correlations on MMPI scale 5 for females. For males positive correlations between the DACOS and MMPI scale 4 and negative correlations on MMPI scale 10 were noted. These results were discussed as pertaining to the socialization of males and females. The most puzzling finding was the lack of correlation between the DACOS and the SOS. This was discussed as possibly being a result of the effect of the Rorschach, which measures psychopathology, whereas the SOS may be a purer measure of object relations. The paucity and weakness of the results was attributed to the restricted variance of the population. Implications for future research included obtaining a larger sample from a normal population, establishing clear norms for object eolations measures, obtaining correlations between a measure of current functioning and the object relations measures as a step toward establishing cut-off scores for groups on the measures, and further exploration of the weights in the scoring categories "of Blatt's DACOS scale.

Rasile, Karen D. "Object Relations Theory and Personal Construct Theory: Rapprochement Opportunity." Thesis, North Texas State University, 1987. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc500772/.

Abstract:
Empirical investigation of the tenets of Object Relations Theory is recent. This study of the theoretical convergence between Object Relations Theory and Personal Construct Theory brought a new direction to the empirical investigation. It was hypothesized that individuals who displayed a well developed level of object relations, as measured by Object Relations Theory, would also display a highly adaptive blend of cognitive complexity and ordination, as described by Personal Construct Theory, and vice versa. A correlational analysis of personality measures on 136 college students approached but did not attain statistical significance. Results indicated no significant theoretical convergence between Object Relations Theory and Personal Construct Theory. Further research is warranted only if greater variability in sample age, life experience, and psychopathology is assured.

Niemeyer, Kristin M. "An Exploration of Object Relations and the Early Working Alliance in a University Clinic Sample." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2004. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc4583/.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study investigated the relationship between clients' object relations functioning and the working alliance. The Social Cognition and Object Relations Scale (SCORS; Westen, 1991), an object relations scoring system for the TAT, was used to assess object relations functioning. Forty-eight therapy clients at a university-based training clinic were administered the TAT, Adult Attachment Scale (AAS), Symptom Checklist 90-Revised (SCL-90-R; Derogatis, 1977), and the short form of the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (MCSD; Crowne & Marlowe, 1960). Following the initial assessment of client characteristics shortly after intake, clients and their therapists rated the working alliance 3 sessions later. Results indicated that the SCORS was significantly correlated with client and therapist ratings of the working alliance. The current study also assessed the predictive validity of the SCORS by examining how its various scales are related to aspects of the working alliance and the other measures used in this study. The findings suggest that the relationship between object relations functioning, the working alliance, symptom severity, and attachment disturbance depends on the aspect of object relations that is being assessed.

Freedenfeld, Robert N. "Assessing the Object Relations of Sexually Abused Females." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1992. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc500657/.

Full text
Abstract:
The TAT stories of 38 sexually abused females between the ages of 5 and 18 years and a clinical group of 26 females with no recorded history of abuse were analyzed using the Object Relations and Social Cognitions TAT Scoring System (Westen et al., 1985). Subjects in the sexual abuse group showed significantly lower mean scores on a scale measuring affect-tone of relationship paradigms and on a scale measuring complexity of representations of people. In addition, pathological responses were given significantly more often by sexual abuse victims on the complexity of representations of people scale. Thus, sexually abused children showed more primitive and simple characterizations of people and more negative, punitive affect in their representations. Moreover, these results were independent of age, race, and intelligence. Group differences are discussed in terms of object relations development.

Mears, Beverley. "Is there a connection between object relations (as described by Klein), problems with sexual intimacy and obsessive compulsive disorder?" Thesis, University of Essex, 2018. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/23469/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this mixed method study carried out in an NHS mental health setting was to elucidate the connection between what was presented in the consulting room as OCD and how it is used to mask early object relations failure, which re-surfaces in adulthood as difficulties within the arena of sexual intimacy. The literature review identified the theoretical and empirical evidence for this hypothesis and highlighted gaps in the current understanding within psychoanalytic thought and object relations perspectives. The theoretical concepts used to understand the clinical data was based on Melanie Klein’s Object Relations Theory. The textual analysis of structured interviews identified levels of obsessive compulsive symptoms and sexual perception categorized as sexual esteem, sexual depression and sexual pre-occupation. Qualitative data was collected from a single case study and provided contextual information including unconscious material. The results of the quantitative study provided evidence for the intensity of OCD and identified negative sexual esteem and negative preoccupation as the dominant features within the sample; whilst the single case-study found evidence that OCD rituals and ruminations were used to mask disruptions in object relations which were noticed in anxious sexual relations. The conclusions of the study offer an important consideration for the treatment of OCD in an NHS setting. It adds to the psychoanalytic theory of obsessional neurosis in relation to the unconscious actions involved during sexual relations. Recommendations for further research include additional quantitative research with a larger sample and analysis of additional single case studies to provide additional evidence of the concept. Key Words: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Object, Object relations, Object Relationships, Projection, Sexual Intimacy, Symbol Formation.

Junqueira, Camila.

Full text
Abstract:
Understanding the metapsychology of limits as a part of the psychoanalytic theory which aim to understand the framing and the functioning of the psychic limits as well as a part of the psychoanalytic theory which aim to understand the etiology, the functioning and the treatment of the borderline cases, manifestations which occur due to failures at the constitutioning and functioning of the psychic limits. And departing of the hypothesis that the metapsychologycal turn demanded by the borderline states is less in the sense of amplify the diversity of metapsychological models and much more in the sense of set in dialogue two theoretical models which are in the base of the psychoanalytic thought, but which were historically split off and considered incompatible: the drive theory and the object relation theory. The aims of this research were (1) to question the limits of the opposition between Freuds drive theory and Winnicotts object relation theory, (2) to present the solution Andre Green propose to this apparent opposition, arguing in favor of the conception of drive and instinct as an inseparable pair, (3) to present and to discuss some of the metapsychological consequences of the possible dialogue between these two theories since study of Freuds and Winnicotts theories, also giving emphasis to the Greens contributions to this dialogue, in order to verify if the hypothesis describe above can be maintained. The presence of object in Freuds theory and the presence of instinct in Winnicotts theory in a second moment of the emotional development denote some overture on theses theories for dialogue. The strong opposition between then, pointed by the psychoanalytic literature, seems to be result of a historical moment. Nevertheless, it follows that the dialogue between these two theories must be done inside certain limits which regard the evidence that Freuds and Winnicotts studies concerned two different levels of apprehension of the Self, which are related, but not superpose each other. Andre Green, at first, disrespect the limits of this dialogue arguing in favor that drive and instinct constitute an inseparable pair, which turns unacceptable one theory which is organized upon one of these two poles, promoting then a re-reading of Freuds and Winnicotts theories and producing important advances for the metapsychology of limits. Meanwhile, more recently, Green brings up what he calls the gradients theory, which corroborate with the evidence that there are limits in this dialogue. The examination of the consequences of this dialogue have produced some proposals, among them: a new reorganization of the psychic topic in order to include the no-psychic, product of the desobjatalization and splitting process, also named third topic; the understanding of borderline pathologies as a specific type of narcissistic neurosis; and also the metapsychological thought as a help to the analyst in front of the clinical challenges proposed by these cases. Finally, the exam accomplished on this research give evidence that the metapsychological turn demanded the borderline states is towards a dialogue between drive theory and object relational theory, confirming the initial hypothesis of this research

Abstract:

Although deficits in object relations patterns have been identified in populations of violent offenders, few studies have examined the object relations of male juveniles incarcerated for violent crimes. The present study examined four dimensions of object relations, as measured by the Thematic Apperception Test and Westen's Social Cognitions and Object Relations Scale with a sample of eight male juvenile offenders incarcerated for violent crimes as De Novo and Eureka Youth Care Centres. These dimensions are complexity of object representations, affect tone of relationship paradigms, capacity for emotional investment in relationships and understanding of social causality.

Abstract:
Sexual abuse of children has profound negative effects on psychological development. This study examined the effects of sexual abuse on object relations functioning by using the Mutuality of Autonomy Scale (MAS, Urist, 1977) to score Rorschach protocols of 63 abused children and 60 non-abused clinical controls. The hypothesis that abused children would have less developed object relations than their non-abused counterparts was not supported. Neither was the hypothesis that children who experienced greater severity of sexual abuse would exhibit more malevolent object relations. The hypothesis that mean and modal MAS scores would be highly intercorrelated and interchangeable as research variables was supported. Comparisons of this sample to a normative sample are discussed.

Selby, Christine Louise Buntrock. "The Relationship of False Self Behavior to Object Relations, Attachment, and Adjustment." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2000. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc2605/.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this investigation is to assess the relationship between false self behavior, object relations and attachment variables, and adjustment. Theory suggests that object relations and attachment are interrelated, and have been independently linked to psychological consequences. Theory also postulates a relationship between false self behavior and object relations theory. Given the interrelatedness of object relations and attachment theory it is possible that false self behavior may also be linked to attachment variables. While the relationship between object relations and false self behavior seems to have been established object relations theory and attachment theory have not been studied in tandem as related to false self behavior. In addition, this investigation will explore the relationship of adjustment variables to attachment and object relations variables. Undergraduate males and females will be solicited for participation, and will be asked to complete self-report questionnaires measuring false self behavior, object relations, attachment, and adjustment. The primary research hypothesis is that less false self behavior will be related to mature object relations, secure attachment, and fewer symptoms.

Michaelis, Stephen Henry. "A Model of Suicidal Behavior In Latency Age Children Based on Developmental Object Relations Theory." PDXScholar, 1989. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/2939.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to explicate the manifestation of suicidal behavior in latency age children based on developmental object relations theory. It asserts that the susceptibility to suicidal behavior becomes part of the child's developing ego organization during the first three years of life as the result of deviant or distorted emotional development. These disturbances interfere with the normal internalizing processes of the separation individuation phases, including the development of psychological mechanisms. To accomplish the purpose of the study, the thesis generally classifies object relations theory within the parameters of developmental psychopathology and specifically classifies it as a component of contemporary psychodynamic theory. Then follows an exposition of the separation individuation process and attendant development of psychological mechanisms in normal and disturbed development. This section concludes by identifying the normally developing child around thirty-six months of age as possessing the capacity to unite disparate self and object images into a single, whole person for appropriate self comfort, self-image formation, and self-esteem regulation through having received primarily gratifying interactions with caregivers. The child with disturbed development lacks this capacity because of the internalization of primarily negative object-images through primarily negative interactions with caregivers. The child lacks trust in itself and in others, tends to perceive itself and others as all-good or all-bad, and experiences hostility and depression. A definition of latency and a description of this developmental stage follows. Cognitive development marked by secondary thought processes and reliance upon dynamic psychological mechanisms--ego defenses--to sustain a behavioral and emotional equilibrium, rather than a diminution of drives, permit latency to become established. As part of the structure of latency, fantasy serves a defensive and adaptive function by providing an outlet for drive expression and for mastery of situations intrapsychically. Children with disturbances in ego organization have a less established structure of latency than do normal children, that is, they rely to a greater extent on psychological mechanisms characteristic of the separation-individuation phases. A review of empirical and clinical research of suicidal children encompasses family environment; loss, depression, and hopelessness; cognitive functioning; and defense mechanisms. Suicidal children live in stressful, chaotic families with confused role relationships. Findings regarding the relationships among loss, depression, and hopelessness appear mixed although integrally related. Suicidal children conceive of impersonal death as final while construing personal death as reversible as a defensive maneuver. Suicidal fantasies constitute the precursors to suicidal planning and actions. Suicidal children show impaired ability to devise active coping strategies. They seem to rely excessively on ego defenses considered developmentally appropriate in early stages of development, such as introjection. A synthesis of theoretical formulations and research findings sets forth the developmental sequence culminating in suicidal behavior. The model depicts a child's developing ego organization predisposed to depression, hostility, and low self-esteem caused by the internalization of a predominance of negative self- and object-images. It portrays susceptibility to suicidal behavior through the incapacity to exercise self-protection under stressful situations because of a reliance upon maladaptive ego defenses. Fantasies to relieve psychic pain as part of latency defenses transform into fantasies of suicide; these presage and allow for planning and, given the failure of ego defenses, suicidal behavior results.

Fang, Ni-Ni. "From instinct to self : a psychoanalytic exploration into a Fairbairnian understanding of depression through a dialogue with my imaginary Virginia Woolf." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/23636.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores a psychoanalytic understanding of depression from the perspective of Fairbairn’s object relations theory, something Fairbairn did not himself undertake. Highlighting the historical and political contexts of the development of psychoanalysis in Fairbairn’s time, I underline the marginalization of Fairbairn’s theory, which I attribute primarily to his lifelong endeavour to challenge the orthodoxy of the time: instinct theory. I chart a theoretical trajectory from the instinct theory (Freud, Klein) to object relations theory (Fairbairn), to contextualise my argument for the potential of Fairbairn’s theory. My argument aligns with Rubens’ (1994, 1998) view that an extension of Fairbairn’s theory beyond what Fairbairn himself originally proposed on the subject of depression is not only advantageous but also necessary. The Fairbairnian understanding of depression at the heart of this inquiry is illustrated through my personal engagement with psychoanalytic theory and framed by my subjective experiences and interpretations. Contending that theory requires personal voices to make sense and be relevant, I engage creatively and personally using the method of letter-writing to an imaginary companion - Virginia Woolf. The Virginia Woolf I construct and with whom I engaged in the research process is based on factual information about Virginia Woolf along with her published texts. In this process I blur the boundary between the real Woolf and my imaginary Woolf. Troubling the edge of reality and fantasy, I use the Woolf of my imagination to stage a process of getting to know Woolf personally, working to develop a trusting relationship and engaging her in a conversation about theory. My letters to Virginia Woolf trace an unfolding dialogue in which we tell and hear each other’s most intimate stories, once unthinkable and unsayable. The letters trace the transformation of my own understanding of the nature of depression, and through them I seek to establish a line of theoretical argument about depression running through the claims of Freud and Klein before turning to the Fairbairnian version of object relations theory. In so doing this thesis complicates psychoanalytic knowledge of the nature of depression, and argues that, framed in Fairbairn’s system, depression can be understood as an actively organised psychic manoeuvre to defend against changes to the endopsychic structure. In other words, and as elaborated through the letters constructed in this thesis, I argue that depression can be understood as a defence against the disintegration of a particular sense of self sponsored by internal object relationships.

Abstract: This thesis is based on fantasy as Freud presented this concept in the dream about the wolves in the clinical case entitled The History of an Infantile Neurosis (1918[1914]). According to Freud, this dream was an "activation" of the scene of intercourse between the Wolf Man's parents. This "fundamental fantasy", this scene, that is never remembered and cannot be symbolized, is a "construction of analysis." Freud never backed down on the idea of non-symbolizable, but Lacan called it "real." Is transmission in psychoanalysis the effect of the non-symbolizable? The second chapter of the thesis discusses the fantasy as narrative and the phrase of the fantasy. The hero of all stories, unmistakably present in the fantasy as narrative, the "I" (or the "ego") is absent from the phrase of the fantasy of being beaten. The intermediate phrase, which is non-symbolizable - it is a construction of analysis - enables the "ego" to be reconstructed. The phrase is an instantaneous glance at the scene of the constitution of the unconscious and enables the existence of a grammar and a detachment from a grammatical logic of the fantasy. As it is a signifying articulation, as is the narrative, a phrase is considered a displacement by Freud in the question of the fantasy. The third chapter presents Lacan's advance. With the logic of the fantasy, the phrase as grammatical structure is considered for implosion. In the phrase of the fantasy of beating only object a remains: the gaze. Object a is seen as body, but not "total body": unspecularizable, object a is fall, something that comes loose from, or moves away from, the body it depends on. Castration makes it possible to define the function of object a in its status in logic. In subjectivation the subject occupies the place of object a. The logic of the fantasy includes object a in the logic of the signifier. The narrative of a case, on a form of transmission in psychoanalysis, is presented in Chapter Four. The last chapter, the passage from "the impossible is the real" to "the real is the impossible," considers that: whereas the Oedipus complex is founded on the interdicted - what cannot be symbolized, in Lacan's terms: 'the impossible is the real' - the formula "there is no sexual relationship," Lacan's axiom for castration - is founded on "the real is the impossible." As the effect of structure, "the real as the impossible" brings the hypothesis of this thesis into existence: the not-symbolizable, the interdicted represented by the Oedipus complex - "the impossible is the real" - founds the Freudian field and produces transmission in psychoanalysis

Abstract:

Abstract:
Object representations of sexually abused girls were compared to those of a clinical control group with no history of maltreatment. In addition, girls subjected to sexual abuse by itself were compared with girls who were sexually abused in conjunction with physical abuse and/or neglect (i.e., multiply abused). TAT stories were analyzed using the Object Relations and Social Cognition Scale which assesses four dimensions of object relations. It was hypothesized that sexually abused children would manifest more general and highly pathognomic impairment than controls along four dimensions of object relations. It was also hypothesized that multiple abuse would be associated with more general and highly pathognomic impairment in object relations than sexual abuse by itself.

Abstract:
Relationships established between theories and practices in the psychoanalytic clinical situation are not usually explicitly examined in the theoretical writings of psychoanalysts; such relationships, however, are necessarily implicit to their practices and discourses. The present work intends to investigate the complexities inherent to these relationships, which in our view are not limited to a causal and bidirectional conception. In order to do so, we have referred to concepts from epistemology and, most fundamentally, psychoanalysis itself. Ogden\'s \"A new reading of the origins of object relations theory\" has allowed us the consideration of theories as objects liable to receive libidinal cathexes, so that once they are lost, they will need to be mourned by the analyst. Such a loss occurs once the theory stops responding to clinical demands, that is, once it stops supporting the analyst in his contact with patients. Mourning and melancholia have thus served us as a metaphor to investigate the ways in which theories become present in the analyst and, consequently, in the clinical situation, for they engender different internal objects. If the analyst mourns the loss of the theory, it gets incorporated into his subsidiary knowledge, providing thus the bases for traumatic encounters with patients and new theories. If, on the other hand, the analyst cannot mourn, the theory gets then rigidly fixed into the analyst\'s subsidiary knowledge, therefore preventing the clinical situation to come forward in its full traumatic otherness.

Abstract:
TAT stories and demographic information of 30 violent and 30 nonviolent juvenile delinquents were obtained. Institutional assessment records at Dallas County Juvenile Department (DCJD) served as the data base for this study. TAT stories and demographic information of 30 violent and 30 nonviolent juvenile delinquents were obtained. Institutional assessment records at Dallas County Juvenile Department (DCJD) served as the data base for this study. Differences with respect to object relations functioning between juveniles charged with two categories of index offenses: property offenses and aggravated assault were examined. Object relations were assessed utilizing a scoring system designed for use with the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT). The scoring system encompasses a psychoanalytic perspective and consists of four dimensions representing separate but interrelated aspects of object relations. It was hypothesized that juvenile delinquents who commit violent crimes would exhibit lower object relations functioning as compared to juvenile delinquents who commit nonviolent crimes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Chapter One of this thesis looks at psychoanalytical object relations theory dealing with early childhood, with an aim to outline the shift that has taken place within critical thinking on personal development--from an emphasis on oedipal relations to the auspicious re-exploration of pre-oedipal states. Here the main theme derives from the paradoxical nature of the human skin, whose fluid sensory and communicative qualities profoundly shape our psychological functioning, and thus ultimately our creation of (gendered) knowledge in all its forms.
Chapter Two seeks to establish some of the possible socio-political implications of a recovered pre-oedipal sensibility, by way of situating the place of the personal within critical discourse--the cross-fertilization of critical theory and self-critical artistic discourses. Using the specific example of film, my central conceit consists in drawing a parallel between the skin and the filmic screen as both being simultaneously introjective and projective liminal membranes.
Chapter Three is a case study of sorts, one which traces the manifestations of a liminal subjectivity during a critical phase in the history of my native Nordic culture--the period of transition between pagan and Christian society. Its spirit is then shown to be alive and well within the ensemble films of Ingmar Bergman, whose work has come to stand as something of an archetype of the Nordic film form.
The second section, PRAXIS, appropriately provides this project's own creative component, a sketch of a film scenario that I hope to one day be able to liberate from the stasis of the written page and project into the uncertain spaces of a theater screen.

Abstract:
The main character of this work is William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn, a psychoanalyst who lived between 1889 and 1965 in Edinburgh, Scotland and who devoted a lifetime to describe the impact of early traumatic experiences in the formation process of the psychic structure. Together with Winnicott and Balint, Fairbairn was a member of what would be known as the Middle Group in the British psychoanalytic tradition. At the same time, he was influenced by Kleins ideas. Fairbairn occupied a unique place in the psychoanalytic scene because he was someone who lived miles away from his colleagues, who produced his work in relative isolation, who used to proclaim himself as the one who surpassed Freud and, despite all this, he was still recognized as a psychoanalyst by the official institutions. Throughout the present work, we highlight the unique and refreshing meaning proposed by the author to the libido forces, according to which the primary human intention is not to seek relief from tension, as proposed by Freud, but to establish affectionate bonds with objects. Beside this, we discuss the model of the mind proposed by Fairbairn, which incorporates into its very structure a conceptualization of early psychic development that is not found in the writings of any other major 20th century psychoanalytic theorist (Ogden, 2010). Inasmuch as we intend to shed light on the great contributions of the author to the psychoanalytic tradition, we endeavor to research his unfinished and very unknown constructions about the intersubjective processes, which are equally relevant and fertile. From this, we argue that the author brought to psychoanalysis original contributions to playing and arts. He also recreated the psychoanalytic setting in order to adapt it to his patients emotional needs. He cast new light on the discussion about the experiences of loss and guilt. He proposed a new way of understanding the impact of traumatic experiences on the subject\'s relation to his body. In our view, by emphasizing the most rudimentary constructions of Fairbairn´s work that arise in the gaps of the great theoretical system he was building, our effort is to create an author less solid and consolidated than he intended to be. This work of creating an author will require from us an effort of reading carefully all of Fairbairn´s texts, especially those that seem less relevant, so our task will be to create an author who has always been there, waiting to be created

Abstract:
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause death worldwide. There is a clear association between cardiovascular disease and emotional events. Psychic processes can happen in CVD, causing unfavorable evolution of affective symptoms and clinical disease: resulting in lower adherence to medical guidelines and higher rates of morbidity and mortality. Patients with advanced heart failure (HF), in NYHA functional class III or IV with severe symptoms, no alternative to clinical treatment and a worse prognosis are listed for heart transplantation (HT). The main objective was investigate the psychodynamics at different stages of CVD (mainly in HF), identifying the psychodynamic characteristics found in relation to patients without evidence of disease and assessing the nature of object relations and unconscious fantasies in different functional classes (NYHA). Method: Clinical, qualitative and observational study design. Participants: N = 40, in groups: A) patients without cardiovascular disease / B) functional class I or II / C) functional class III or IV not listed for HT / functional class III or IV with indications for HT. Instruments: 1 clinical interview and assessment of global functioning / GAF DSM IV, 2 Object Relations Test (ORT) by Phillipson - A1(1), B3(4), AG(5), BG(10), C2(11), White (13). Procedure: convenience sample and individual application. The object relations theory of Melanie Klein guided the development of the study and analysis of the material. Results: unconscious fantasies and psychic processes archaic can be found in all stages of CVD, however, the most advanced CVD groups showed significant psychosomatic aspects, object relations and unconscious fantasies from very archaic development phases._ In group D, the frequency of object relations of viscumcarica position was more expressive and showed specific unconscious fantasies in relation to HT, as the fantasies of mutilation._ The psychoanalytic review was essential to understanding the cardiac patients psychodynamics and identified psychosocial risk factors (RF) involved in the health - disease process, suggesting special attention of the multidisciplinary team and immediate psychotherapy for some groups. Psychoanalytic intervention reduces symptoms and promotes mental health: improves self-care, execution of team guidelines and protocol and treatment adherence. The control some risk factors can determine a favorable prognosis when considered in the treatment of cardiac patients

Abstract:
Pre-literate children experience written text as a meaningless material object, the word-object, but the compulsory and institutional aspects of reading pedagogy make this an experience from which they cannot escape. Some children begin to associate their own negative experiental sense with the word-object before they are able to learn to read. As reading pedagogy continues, these children begin to read back experiental sense which prevents them from converting the word-object to meaningful text. Experiental sense is repressed because it is psychically painful. It retains qualities of phenomena repressed from childhood: it is active and intractable to reason. The result is an intractable illiteracy which may be interpreted as biologically based dyslexia. Further attempts at reading pedagogy in childhood and adulthood generally result in reproduction of the inability because this pedagogy requires learners to attempt to read linguistically which elicits experiental sense. As these children become adults, their avoidance of reading sometimes structures their social relations to accommodate and compound their problems. The method to overcome the problem replaces experiental sense with positive feelings about written language. The power of language to denote emotions of pleasure and affirmation from learners lives is used. These emotions are enhanced through a technique of affirmative intersubjectivity. Short spoken affirmative texts are made by learners, tape recorded and reproduced as written texts by the literacy worker. Through allowing learners control and autonomy over their spoken and written texts, the positive emotions in them are associated by learners with the written texts. Exercises on the affirmative written texts are used to demonstrate regularities about written language. Learners then progress to reading suitable independent texts and other activities. There are suggestions about how to enhance learners feelings as competent readers and writers. The thesis uses a methodology of action research and includes five case studies of adults with literacy problems. Concepts from social theory, psychoanalysis and object relations theory are used and adapted to understand written language, schooling and illiteracy.

Abstract:
We observed, through clinical practice, that some diabetes patients presented a chronic paralyzing resistance which blocks treatment. They do not seem to realize what is going on with them and live as if the treatment were not a beneficial thing. They feel protected and are sure that nothing will happen to them. They assure that they do not feel anything, any signs of either acute or chronic complications. We think that such wicked protection can be understood from the study of the pathological organizations. These organizations offer great resistance to changes and object-dependant experiences. The purposes of this study were: (1) to assess the level of adaptive effectiveness and the crisis episodes; (2) assess the emotional dynamics and the adaptive balance of the ego, aiming at understanding the main unconscious stressing system, which might identify the presence or absence of pathological organizations; (3) to correlate the level of adaptive effectiveness with the presence or absence of pathological organizations; (4) to correlate the level of adaptive balance of the ego with the intensity of action of the pathological organizations; and (5) to correlate the quality of the control of glycemia with the presence or absence of pathological organizations. The instruments used were the Adaptive Operational Diagnostic Scale (Escala Diagnóstica Adaptativa Operacionalizada EDAO) and the Phillipson Object Relations Test (Teste das Relações Objetais de Phillipson TRO). The control of glycemia was determined by laboratory tests. Along this study, 30 Type II diabetes patients were observed, which represents a significant and impartial sample from a population of 113 diabetes patients treated during the first half of 1999 at the Students league for the treatment of diabetes patients (LIGA), from the Diabetes Center of Universidade Federal de São Paulo - UNIFESP. The patients, from both genders, were aged from 44 to 62 and were divided into two groups. Group I had 15 patients with a good control of glycemia whereas Group II had 15 patients with a bad one. Both groups were controlled for six months, along which they applied the recommendations from the Brazilian Society for Diabetes (Sociedade Brasileira de Diabetes SBD - 1999) in order to determine the quality of the control of glycemia. From this criterion the groups were defined. Patients with Plasmatic Fast Glucose (GJ) < 126 mg/dl and Casual Glucose (GC) < 200 mg/dl were considered as having a good control and so they were part of Group I. Figures above or equal to these values were included in Group II, as having a bad control. The results showed that there is a strong correlation between the adaptive effectiveness and the internal balance of the ego with the quality of the control of glycemia. Therefore, the higher the level of adaptation, the better the control of glycemia. Likewise, whenever the object relations either tend to adaptation or are positive, the better the control of glycemia. As for the presence of pathological organizations, the analysis through EDAO and TRO showed that in Group I, with a good control, such organizations were not observed. These patients presented responses which, on a cumulative basis, generated either the improvement or maintenance of the adaptive effectiveness. The balance of the inner world generated the possibility of adaptation to situations. In Group II, with a bad control, we observed the presence and intensity of pathological organizations. These patients presented responses that blocked any type of progress, thus significantly the adaptive effectiveness. In TRO, likewise, we observed that in Group II the immobilization or paralysis before situations, which is a typical phenomenon of pathological organizations.

Abstract:
This study attempted to provide validation for Lerner and Lerner's Rorschach Defense Scale by investigating the relationship between primitive defenses as measured by the Rorschach Defense Scale, level of object relations as measured by the Developmental Analysis of the Concept of the Object Scale, and characteristic defensive operations as assessed by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. One hundred and twenty undergraduates completed the Rorschach and MMPI, and the RDS and DACOS were applied to their Rorschach responses. The results show a significant positive correlation between use of primitive defenses and level of object relations development -and a significant negative correlation between the defense Projective Identification and MMPI scale 6 (Paranoia) elevation. Overall, these results did not support the validity of the RDS.

Considering that the construction of knowledge in Clinical Psychology requires from the beginning the integration of an investigative posture with the possibility of being present before the other, I made use of the winnicottian concept of Primary Maternal Preoccupation like a lighthouse that guides the psychologist in her approach to the woman’s emotional experiences during pregnancy and postpartum. During the researcher task I encountered therapeutic alternatives. Hypothesis and working modalities came out from the data: interviews, letters, phone calls and home visits. The field of maternity presented itself extremely fertile, requiring though some basic tools in order to be fecundated, such as: flexibility to meet needs, holding all sorts of agonies, humility before of our own ignorance, true preoccupation with the patient and respect for her being.

Abstract:
This work was the investigation of possible implications between a couple dynamics and the relationship with their autistic child and the difficulties the parents have to establish a partnership with the therapist, thus helping the therapeutic process and the development of their child. Comprehensive Diagnosis were done (Trinca, 1983), with the aim of getting to know the psycodynamic aspects of the couples and their relationship with their autistic child. The theoretical base of the study is the psychoanalysis and the psycodynamic theories together with the clinical experience. Two methods were used: semi-directed interview and the procedure of Family Drawing with Stories (Trinca, 1978). The research was done in a Public Institution, specialized in treating autistic children, located in the city of São Paulo. There was also the voluntary participation of five couples, parents of autistic children, which meant na enormous contribution to the study. The results obtained after the data gathering were: - the parents lived emotional conflicts, environmental instabilities, and affective humiliation in their families of origin. - the emotional conflicts originated handicapped object relations, they were fragile and disturbed. - the emocional difficulties lived were obstacles to the emotional development of these parents and made impossible any kind of interaction with the autistic child. - some reactions of the autistic children, used as a way of trying to establish contact with their parents are related to the focus of the conflict of the parents dynamics. - the parents’emotional difficulties reflect in the development of the autistic child, due to the fact that the parents do not provide a ‘live’ and ‘human’ contact. We concluded that the parents we have studies present intense suffering demonstrating important emotional difficulties, needing to be treated as their autistic children do.

This Master thesis explores the subject of couple infidelity using psychoanalysis. It provides an in-depth comprehension of the psychological mechanisms involved on a loving-unfaithful couple relationship. Based on the contemporary works of Otto Kernberg (1995a, 1995b), Lucinda Mitchell (2000) and Lawrence Josephs (2006), conflicts derived from loving relationships are studied. A qualitative methodology was used to formulate a psychodynamic comprehension of two case studies. Data was obtained through psychoanalytical short term psychotherapy and through the results from Object Relations Test (Phillipson, 2008). The study identified that long term infidelity has its origins in pre-oedipal issues related to the avoidance of deepening the romantic relationship and to the frightening experience of losing primitive parental objects. This article aims at improving the theoretical framework to study loving relationships, as well as the clinical practice of psychoanalytical psychotherapy.

Abstract:
The bonding experience between the primary carer (Mother) and the baby, at the start of the post-natal life, forms the context of neurogenesis, according to studies carried out by Developmental Neuroscience; and is also the basis of emotional development, according to the theory of psychoanalyst Donald W. Winnicott. The objective of this study is to investigate the technical constructions of authors who study different aspects of the same reality: the implications of the bonding experience between the baby and the primary carer (mother), which take place in the initial stages of human development, in the process of the interrelation between psyche and soma, which is considered to be the basis for the emotional development the human being. These constructions belong to a line of research in developmental neuroscience, and another in psychoanalysis, represented by the theory of Donald W. Winnicott on the beginnings of development. Considering that this work is a theoretical-reflective study, a bibliographic review was carried out. The conclusions seek to support a knowledge that can further understanding of the factors which influence human development, at the start of the post-natal life, and which may be responsible for the appearance of psychopathologies in future stages of the vital cycle. They also emphasize the need for the development of strategies of early intervention in the relationship between mother and baby, in infant care programs, reinforcing the importance of preventative psychology in the protection of human development.

The Morbid Obesity and Bariatric Surgery clinic demands long term studies and applicant follow-up. The risks and benefits of surgically induced weight loss must serve as a warning beacon for health professionals. The interview usage within the psychology service is a guideline for the psychological therapy. Objectives: 1) Describe the social and demographical profile of the obese patients, applying for the bariatric surgery. 2) Analyze the patients perception about personality characteristics associated with obesity and feeding disorders. 3) Describe the psychodynamic contents of the subject s speech and evaluate the unconscious strain system of two patients, through the Phillipson s Object Relations Test (ORT). Method: methodological planning with data analysis through the epidemiological method and clinical case study, from a psychoanalytical orientation. At the first stage, 300 protocols from the psychological service were consulted and at the second stage, two patients with weight gain were followed after 24 months. They are patients who sought treatment at a specialized health center located in a Brazilian southeastern metropolis, under post-informed consent. The protocols were filled by 227 women and 73 men; average age around 36 years old; 53% of them with college and secondary education; most of them married; BMI between severe and super morbid (94,3%). Appointed surgical techniques Capella Bypass and Fobi- Capella (67%). Results: psychological characteristics mentioned by the patients; anxiety appeared in 93,7% of the answers, followed by hastiness, nervousness, depression, tolerance to frustration, low self-esteem, concern, problem solver (more than 50%). Family history of obesity is present in more than 70%. Depression and alcohol abuse in 30%; psychotherapy attendance (30%) and depression / anxiety control medication (10%). In the second stage, the psychodynamic diagnosis, using the Phillipson s Object Relations Test with two patients, whose analysis showed a need for psychoanalytic sychotherapy, because they had fixations on the schizo-paranoid position and displayed difficulty in dealing with losses and low motivation for change and insight. Conclusions: with the interview superposing and the empyrical observations registration, this semi directed interview script brings better conditions to assess and evaluate the contents disclosed by the patients. The contradictions between the answers and the speech, in the individual contact with the psychologist, point that an investment in preparing the patient for the surgery is needed, and, more acutely, the psychological follow-up in the first post-operatory year. There is a magical thought to be working through during the questionnaire application about beliefs toward the surgery and the weight loss and so invite the patient to fullfil the place of the subject implied in the pre and post operatory process. The Phillipson s ORT contributed to a better understanding of mental functioning of obese patients with weight gain after surgery.(AU)

The purpose of this study was to deepen and update the concept of grounding in Bioenergetic Analysis. This approach combines fundamental principles of psychoanalysis with direct work on the organism, seen from the viewpoint of its emotional, energetic and relational development. Both paradigms of psychoanalysis, pulsion and object-relations, were studied within the context of the historical development of Bioenergetics Analysis, in terms of their influence on the theory as well as on the practice. Brazilian Bioenergetic Analysis therapists have been building their own identity over the last 25 years. This should not be seen as a split from Alexander Lowen's ideas, as it actually means a differentiation born out of those therapists maturity. The integration of the object-relations paradigm, indicates the pathway for a model of psychotherapy which associates the construction of functional and integrative internal organizations with the phase, in psychotherapy, of dismantling repressive and defensive structures. In this study, a group of third-age women participated in Bioenergetics exercise classes for a period of four months. This research may be considered a social project with the objective of demonstrating an application of Bioenergetic Analysis that would preserve its healing potential, at the same time respecting the principles of intersubjectivity, of social inclusion, citizenship and ethics, and also that would be compatible with Brazilian social reality. The work with the group was conducted intending to create resources that might make possible for chronic primary defenses gradually to become unnecessary. Body work and level of excitation were adequated to the developmental level and physical possibilities of the participants. The changes observed in the group were verified by the subjective observation of the coordinators, as well as by verbal manifestations of participants, and by the analysis of the HTP test. In short, those verified changes were: improvement in vitality and flexibility, self-perception, social contact, increased maturity and ego strength, along with possible emergence of unconscious pulsional and traumatic contents.

Abstract:
The present study tries to articulate three levels of research: art therapy, affect regulation, and the facial expression of emotions, and divides in three parts: a theoretical introduction, methodology and a conclusion. In the first part, we present, in a first moment, art therapy as context of the study, for it is in the context of a process of art-therapeutic intervention that our research will take place. We refer to the main contributions of Freud, Jung, Klein, Winnicott and Milner, the unconscious, the collective unconscious and archetypes, object relations, the potential space and playing, the art-therapeutic intervention model. In a second moment, designated as theoretical background, we reflect upon affect regulation, the contribution of the attachment model, we present the model of social biofeedback of parental mirroring of the affects, and we further analyse the relationship between affect regulation, the process of mentalization and the development of the self. Finally, facial expression of emotions is presented as the object of study of our research, for our final research will lie upon it. We present the triggers of emotion and the concept of basic emotions, as well as a description of the seven basic emotions. We make a final synthesis of the articulation between affect regulation, mentalization and the change of facial expression of emotions in art therapy. In the second part, we present the case and we describe the methodology used during the research, as well as the results obtained. In the last part, we state some general conclusions and some more particular observations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
My thesis addresses the antagonism between the mystery of life and the destructive pursuit of power which forms a central theme in the works of Per Olof Sundman (1922–1992). The purpose is to show that Sundman uses the theme of the encounter/non-encounter and the destructive leader to examine the conditions for allowing a deeper experience of reality and the destructive exercise of power. I analyse these themes using concepts borrowed from literary studies (Atle Kittang, Paul Ricoeur, Bertil Romberg, Staffan Björck, Gérard Genette), the philosophy of religion (Martin Buber, Göran Bergstrand) and psychoanalysis (Ludvig Igra, Otto Kernberg, Erich Fromm, Julia Kristeva). My study highlights the problems associated with the destructive exercise of power, which is the overriding theme of Sundman's work.      I explore the theme of the encounter by using the concept pair I-You/I-It. With the aid of this concept pair, I throw light on the aspect of depth in our existence by describing the human encounter. In my analysis on the theme of power, I point out the personal qualities inherent in the destructive leader. I also explore the link between the destructive leader's inner conflict of narcissism and repressed weakness – a conflict projected to the outside world – and the emergence of violence. In order to reveal this inner process, I unearth on a latent level the theme of the destructive leader/stranger in Sundman's work. This enables me to single out the mechanism responsible for the emergence of destructivity in the human psyche, while showing the close link between this pattern of narcissism and projected weakness and a distorted view of reality.    Sundman contrasts this world of power with an integrative attitude to life. In his novel The Expedition, Sundman depicts life in the other world as being a state of human coexistence in which no one is seen to be a stranger. This idea of unity is reinforced by the choice of name for the first-person narrator of the other world. In this novel, the conditions enabling the flourishing of universalism as an attitude to life are also those that give expression in the I-You encounter to the experience of a deeper aspect to our existence.
