Abstract:
Cyber parental control aims to filter objectionable web content and prevent children from being exposed to harmful content. Succeeding in detecting and blocking objectionable content depends heavily on the accuracy of the topic model. A reliable ground truth dataset is essential for building effective cyber parental control models and validation of new detection methods. The ground truth is the measurement for labeling objectionable and unobjectionable websites of the cyber parental control dataset. The lack of publicly accessible datasets with a reliable ground truth has prevented a fair and coherent comparison of different methods proposed in the field of cyber parental control. This paper presents a ground truth dataset that contains 8000 labelled websites with 4000 objectionable websites and 4000 unobjectionable websites. These websites consist of more than 2 million web pages. Creating a ground truth objectionable web content dataset involved a few phases, including data collection, extraction, and labeling. Finally, the presence of bias, using kappa coefficient measurement, is addressed. The ground truth dataset is available publicly in the Mendeley repository.

Abstract:
This work aimed to develop a machine learning objectionable web content filtering and blocking system. This was important because of the high level of proliferation of objectionable web content which had posed a significant challenge to maintain a safe and appropriate online environment. The objectives of the study include a developed machine learning system that can send a real-time short message system(sms) to parents or guardians or other designated individuals responsible for the children’s safety informing them when their children had opened objectionable web content, a developed machine learning system that kept log of objectionable web content if network is unavailable and send notification if network is restored, a developed machine learning system endowed with enough reasoning capability to intelligently filter web objectionable content and ill-suited web pages, a developed machine learning system that was capable to have kept detailed log of objectionable web content even if the search was carried out in private (incognito mode in goggle chrome). The programming language of choice used in this work was python since its codes can be created quicker and performed faster than many other programming languages. The methodology adopted was the object-oriented Analysis and Design methodology (OOADM). The study utilized Anaconda Jupiter Notebook as its development environment, python as its programming language and then SQlite as the Database Management System (DBMS). The machine learning web content filtering and blocking system serves as a powerful tool to protect our children from harmful online content, promoting a safer and more secured digital environment.

Abstract:
The purpose of this chapter is to provide some insights into advertisements on the Iranian websites. Firstly, in publisher side, is the ethic a matter of fact in accepting Internet advertisements to publish? Second, to provide a preliminary insight into the advertising of pleasant and objectionable products, which one is more? Third, what kind of the involvement (rational or emotional) used more to publish Internet advertisements? In pursuing these goals, the content of 649 ads through 205 websites and 751 ads through 138 weblogs was analyzed. Content analysis was used to verify the data. In order to avoid the miscoding of contents, two researchers conducted the analysis and Intercoder reliability used to this goal. The authors found that (1) all 649 analyzed ads in Iranian websites are belonged to ethical ads and no unethical advertisement found at websites, (2) the majority of published advertisements are belonged to “high involvement product with rational appeal”, (3) the “objectionable product ads” at Iranian weblogs (%68) was more “pleasant product ads” (%32). This study by analyzing 1400 advertisements gives managers some insights and solutions regarding to advertising on the Iranian Internet domains. These experimental evidences regarding to ethics, pleasant and objectionable products and the type of involvement in Internet advertising in Iran have attracted little research attention.

Abstract:
Abstract The presence of stems in cut tobacco is detrimental to cigarette quality, resulting in problems during production particularly on today's high-speed makers. Incomplete threshing and the use of unthreshed semi-Oriental tobaccos can increase the stem content in the cut tobacco considerably. The percentage of stems present in cut tobacco was investigated by HauniMaschinenbau AG specifically for semi-Oriental tobacco. Their findings show that not all stems present in the strips or lamina after cutting are classified as “objectionable”. However, the percentage of objectionable stems in the cut tobacco is not inconsiderable and depends on the thickness of the stems present. Reducing the objectionable stem contingent in cut tobacco is therefore a crucial concern of many cigarette manufacturers who set great store on ensuring high-quality product. HauniMaschinenbau AG offers a cut tobacco separator which has been specially designed for this purpose and also used as a cooler. A corresponding model is available in the HauniMaschinenbau AG pilot plant in Hamburg for tests using the customers’ own tobacco.

Abstract:
Pecans, because of their high oil and polyunsaturated fatty acid content, have a relatively short shelf life due to oxidation of the oil. Using a nondestructive supercritical CO2 extraction process, we evaluated oil reduction as a means for pecan shelf life extension. Pecan halves were extracted under sufficient conditions for 22% and 28% oil reduction, and then stored in modified-atmosphere packages with 21% O2 at 22C for up to 37 weeks. Kernel hexanal content and sensory rancid flavor were monitored at various times throughout the study. The resistance of oils to oxidation, indicated by the onset of sustained hexanal production, was increased from 6 weeks for full-oil halves, to 18 weeks for 22% reduced-oil halves, to 22 weeks for 28% reduced-oil halves. Objectionable rancid flavor was detected by the 22nd week of storage for full-oil pecans. Reduced-oil pecans never developed objectionable rancid flavor. Abstract:
博士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>資訊工程學研究所<br>103<br>This dissertation proposes user-behavior-based models to identify and filter objectionable content, such as pornography, gambling, violence, and drugs, for protecting children or anyone else from inappropriate materials during their web surfing. From users’ behavioral perspectives, this dissertation can be divided into two parts, which are introduced as follows. The first part is mining searching behaviors for collaborative cyperporn filtering. We present the search-intent-based methods to generate and update pornographic blacklists for filtering the major objectionable category. Searches-and-clicks keeping in the server-side query logs can be effectively exploited for tagging the categories of users’ clicked URLs without the help of analyzing any page content. Our proposed methods can be adopted to help the search engines to mask objectionable results for child suitability purpose. The second part is mining browsing behaviors for objectionable content filtering. In addition to retrieving the information via search engines, users have many alternatives to access other kinds of objectionable web content. We further explore users’ browsing intents to predict the category of a user’s next access and apply the results to filter objectionable content. Client-side click-through data is evaluated to demonstrate the feasibility of predicting categories without the necessity of crawling page content for machine learning. Traditional filtering techniques regard this research problem as categorization through intelligent content analysis. Different from this research line, we propose another direction via behavioral mining. In practices, our proposed prediction models are complementary to the existing solutions by mining users’ behaviors.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>資訊工程學研究所<br>101<br>This research explores users’ browsing intents to predict the category of a user’s next access during web surfing, and applies the results to objectionable content filtering. A user’s access trail represented as a sequence of URLs reveals the contextual information of web browsing behaviors. We extract behavioral features of each clicked URL, i.e., hostname, gTLD, IP, port, and bag-of-words, to develop a linear chain CRF model for context-aware category prediction. Large-scale experiments show that our method achieves high accuracy 74.60% for multiclass classification on a dataset with 78 different categories and promising accuracy 93.97% for objectionable access identification without requesting their corresponding page content. Our proposed model accomplishes blocking rate 92.65%, while maintaining a favorably low over-blocking rate 5.71% for collaboratively filtering objectionable content on the dynamic web. Furthermore, this research proposes a method to generate a dynamic blacklist. It can achieve high blocking rate(95.81%) like traditional blacklists, but without their over-blocking problem(4.94%). In practices, it is complementary to intelligent content analysis for keeping up with rapidly changing variability of objectionable content from users’ behavioral perspectives.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>資訊管理研究所<br>90<br>With the development of the Internet world, life has become more convenient than ever before. People, without leaving home, can get almost everything from the Internet. Information, entertainment, merchandise, even love and friendship─all these come easily after some searches and clicks. So do some bad, immoral, illegal things, among them, pornography. There are numerous pornographic images and video sequences spreading all over the World Wide Web. Now, such pornographic materials can be downloaded easily only with one click. Access to these images and video sequences by adolescences therefore becomes a graver problem now. In order to create a fresh Internet environment, the study of filter of pornographic images on Internet commences. In the past few years, many researchers and organizations try different ways such as setting up a clean website, keyword and context filter, URL filter, and content based image filter, to prevent the pornographic images from intruding in people’s life. The brief introduction of these various mechanisms to filter the pornographic images will be discussed in chapter2. Pornocide, a content base objectionable image filtering system, tries to recognize the pornographic images on the Internet. It primarily adopts the color and shape features. In addition, face detection algorithm and the neural network is presented in Pornocide to make the system more robust. Pornocide’s system architecture and algorithm is studied in chapter 3. The experimental results of each component and the whole system are shown in chapter 4. The conclusion is discussed in the chapter 5.

Abstract:
Chapter 5 explains why the arguments in the preceding chapter fail. On our view, an agent is blameworthy if her behavior manifests an inappropriate degree of moral regard for others. Typically, this involves treating others with unjustified contempt, ill will, or certain forms of indifference. We argue that a perpetrator’s actions may manifest these objectionable qualities regardless of whether he believes that he is acting permissibly, and regardless of whether he is at fault for possessing this belief. This claim is developed in the context of the dispositional account of war crimes presented in Chapter 3, which is particularly well suited to our account of moral responsibility since it stresses the role that agents’ beliefs, goals, and values play in their actions.

This chapter makes practical suggestions for managing moral psychology for ethical goals. It does so by looking at interventions aimed at 1) altering human psychology and 2) restricting the impact of morally objectionable psychological biases. The chapter provides justification for intervening to change people’s attitudes toward animals, within the context of debates over the permissibility of “nudges.” Empirical research on reducing bias between groups of human beings is discussed in order to inform proposals for changing attitudes to animals. Classic moral goals in animal ethics are also discussed, with an eye toward how these goals could be assisted by having a better understanding of moral psychology.

Abstract:
In Dockside Reading Isabel Hofmeyr traces the relationships among print culture, colonialism, and the ocean through the institution of the British colonial Custom House. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, dockside customs officials would leaf through publications looking for obscenity, politically objectionable materials, or reprints of British copyrighted works, often dumping these condemned goods into the water. These practices, echoing other colonial imaginaries of the ocean as a space for erasing incriminating evidence of the violence of empire, informed later censorship regimes under apartheid in South Africa. By tracking printed matter from ship to shore, Hofmeyr shows how literary institutions like copyright and censorship were shaped by colonial control of coastal waters. Set in the environmental context of the colonial port city, Dockside Reading explores how imperialism colonizes water. Hofmeyr examines this theme through the concept of hydrocolonialism, which puts together land and sea, empire and environment.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 surveys the literature on civil disobedience and places the author’s own approach to resistance and principled disobedience within this context. Public understanding of civil disobedience is the product of two different strands: the broadly Rawlsian philosophical conception of civil disobedience and the official narrative of the civil rights movement in the United States. This chapter calls upon history to show how the standard, broadly Rawlsian conception of civil disobedience (though not necessarily Rawls’s own) rests on an unrealistic and objectionable reading of the African American civil rights struggle. It also argues that the official reading of the civil rights movement functions as a counter-resistance ideology, deterring any form of protest against the status quo. It then examines and critiques recent “inclusive” accounts of civil disobedience, proposing instead a broad matrix of resistance that includes lawful acts of resistance and principled—civil and uncivil—disobedience.

Abstract:
In 2005, US Marines killed 24 unarmed Iraqi civilians in the town of Haditha. How should we assess the perpetrators of this and other war crimes? Is it unfair to blame the Marines because they were subject to situational pressures such as combat stress? Or should they be held responsible for their actions, since they intentionally chose to kill civilians? In this book, we take up these questions and propose a provocative theory of the causes of war crimes and the responsibility of perpetrators. In the first half of the book, we criticize accounts that explain war crimes by reference to external situational pressures, such as peer pressure, combat stress, and propaganda. We develop an alternative theory of war crimes that explains how military personnel make sense of their participation in war crimes through the lens of their self-conceptions, goals, and values. In the second half of the book, we reject theories of responsibility that excuse perpetrators on the grounds that situational pressures often lead them to believe that their behavior is permissible. Such theories are, we contend, unacceptably exculpating and imply that it’s unreasonable for victims of war crimes to blame their attackers. In contrast, we argue that perpetrators of war crimes may be blameworthy if their actions express objectionable attitudes toward their victims, even if they sincerely believe that what they are doing is right. In addition, we show that the demand that victims of war crimes forego blame fails to show sufficient regard for their moral standing.

Bidadanure, Juliana Uhuru. Justice Across Ages. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198792185.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Justice Across Ages is a book about how we should respond to inequalities between people at different stages of their lives. Age structures our social institutions, relationships, obligations, and entitlements. There is an age for voting, an age for working, and an age when one is expected (and sometimes required) to retire. Each stage of life also corresponds to specific forms of social risks and vulnerabilities. As a result, inequalities between age groups and generations are numerous and multidimensional. And yet, political theorists have spared little time thinking about how we should respond to these disparities. Are they akin to those patterned on gender or race? Or is there something relevantly distinctive about them that mitigates the need for concern? These questions and others are answered in this book and a theory of justice between co-existing generations is proposed. Age structures our lives and societies. It shapes social institutions, roles, and relationships, as well as how we assign obligations and entitlements within them. There is an age for schooling, an age for voting, an age for working, and an age when one is expected (and sometimes required) to retire. Each life-stage also brings its characteristic opportunities and vulnerabilities, which spawn multidimensional inequalities between young and old. How should we respond to these age-related inequalities? Are they unfair in the same way that gender or racial inequalities often are? Or is there something distinctive about age that should mitigate ethical concern? Justice Across Ages addresses these and related questions, offering an ambitious theory of justice between age groups. Written at the intersection of philosophy and public policy, the book sets forth ethical principles to guide a fair distribution of goods like jobs, healthcare, income, and political power among persons at different stages of their life. Drawing on a range of practical cases, the book deploys normative tools to distinguish objectionable instances of inequalities from acceptable ones and in so doing, critically assesses a range of policy remedies. At a time where young people are starkly under-represented in legislatures and subject to disproportionally high unemployment rates, the book moves from foundational theory to the specific policy reforms needed today. As moral and political philosophers have noted, it can be tempting to assume that age-based inequalities are morally trouble free, since over the course of a complete life, a person moves through each age groups. Yet, Justice Across Ages argues that we should resist this assumption. In particular, we should regard with suspicion commonplace and widely tolerated forms of age-based social hierarchy, such as the infantilization of young adults and older citizens, the political marginalization of teenagers and young adults, the exploitation of young workers through precarious contracts and unpaid internships, and the spatial segregation of elderly persons. If we ever are to live in a society where people are treated as equals, we must pay vigilant attention to how age membership can alter our social standing. This position carries important implications for how we should think about the political and moral value of equality, design our social and political institutions, and conduct ourselves in a range of contexts that includes families, workplaces, and schools.

Abstract In today’s world where online information flows are constantly rising, the illegality of the content that recipients place on the online platforms is causing profound concern. Forced by the developments in legislation and case-law, the online platforms are putting together architectures of different content-moderation mechanisms. The Digital Services Act is one such legislative instrument aimed at harmonising and solidifying the techno-legal landscape in which online platforms take on the role of quasi-adjudicating authority in moderating illegal or objectionable content. This paper is focused on a segment of this system—the out-of-court dispute settlement mechanism. Explored in detail are the parties and the matter of the proceedings, the bodies certified to carry out the proceedings, and the regulated elements of the procedure with the aim of assessing whether this new addition to the ARD menu in the EU will contribute to the reduction of illegal online content, especially by assuring sufficient human expert verification of the decisions related to a disputed content.

Abstract:
Chapter 8 considers Nietzsche’s important work as a cultural critic. This is approached by way of a case study, considering one of the cultural phenomena that occupied Nietzsche most—namely, the Christian-moral outlook—and looking to his critique of it. One interpretation of this critique would be causal in nature, holding that Nietzsche criticizes this outlook on account of its deleterious effects. But, as this chapter argues, we also find in Nietzsche’s work a strenuous objection to the Christian-moral outlook that is leveled on different grounds. Nietzsche will, it is suggested, see the cultural practices and institutions—those of morality foremost among them—as being replete with content, which can be philosophically unearthed, interpreted, and criticized. For Nietzsche, the Christian-moral outlook insidiously enshrines what by his lights are deeply objectionable values and ideals—and these are objectionable independently of their pernicious (and sometimes beneficial) effects.

The generation of this gas therefore presents a multitude of problems in the daily generation of waste products in industry, food production and municipal waste treatment.; In addition to the problem experienced with corrosion is the health and safety issue of exposure to this dangerous gas. Hydrogen Sulfide has an objectionable odor on initial contact; it is a toxic gas to humans and animals, which will rapidly react to cause serious health problems.; Regulations for the allowable limit of Hydrogen Sulfide in the air are presently being reviewed and the expectation is for a movement toward low allowable limits in all areas of contact.; The use of Highly Reactive Humic Acid or humates for the control of Hydrogen Sulfide provides an all natural, safe to use method of potentially resolving this problem.

Abstract:
Unprecedented competition among the worldwide automotive manufacturers has benefited the consumer, resulting in higher levels of overall quality while simultaneously reducing the time-to-market for new models. One subjective differentiator of automotive quality is the noise and vibration performance, as evident by the quieter interiors even in vehicles not typically associated with the luxury banner, such a large trucks. In essence, passenger compartments devoid of objectionable road and wind noise have become a fundamental customer requirement expected in all vehicles regardless of cost, thereby reducing the broadband masking content of the interior. This reduction of masking has the potential to make tonal noise more prominent and annoying, by increasing the tone-to-noise ratio, and as result, the perception of quality may suffer. Gear whine is one such tonal noise phenomena that must be diligently managed by automotive engineers in order to avoid objectionable passenger compartment noise. This can be quite challenging, since many gear design features implemented for increased durability are often counter productive for noise. Sources of gear whine include powertrain components such as automatic and manuals transmissions, axles, transfer cases, power-take of units, engine accessory drives, and an assortment of other potential noise makers. This paper will attempt a technology review of various practical methods for managing the gear whine phenomena, including the use of Quality Function Deployment charts, dynamic transmission error with parametric gear models, and response surface modeling for gear design optimization.

Abstract:
Alliance Pipeline operates an integrated Canadian and U.S. high-pressure, rich natural gas transmission pipeline system. Rich natural gas pipelines are unique in that the product transported in these pipelines contains greater amounts of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons than would be transported in a dry natural gas pipeline. The specifications for gas quality however are very similar and require the product to contain less than sixty five mg/m3 water, no free liquids and/or objectionable materials such as bacteria, ashphaltene, gum, etc. The acid gases, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide, are also required to be below certain values (see Table 1). Corrosion is not expected to occur under these conditions due to the lack of free water available for the development of an electrochemical corrosion cell. However, there are instances where the gas quality may vary and this gas enters facility piping for short periods of time. A method has been developed by Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI) to determine the internal corrosion susceptibility for dry gas natural gas pipelines but there are currently no industry accepted models which determine the internal corrosion susceptibility for high energy natural gas (HENG) pipeline systems. Accordingly, it is important for operators of pipelines with high energy natural gas (HENG) to collect and analyze these off specification events and develop a method to determine the relative impact on internal corrosion susceptibility. It is perhaps more important for operators to use this method to develop a strategy to prioritize facility piping for inspection and confirm the absence of internal corrosion. An Internal Corrosion Susceptibility Assessment (ICSA) method has been developed for HENG which considers off specification water, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulphide contents in the HENG. The analysis has been enhanced to also consider low temperature operation and hydrocarbon dew-point variations. The model has been effectively trialed over the last number of years to prioritize inspections and has been further tested against PRCI research and models developed for dry gas internal corrosion susceptibility. All internal corrosion models need to identify free water as prime contributor to susceptibility, thus the subject model is considered adaptable to other gas pipeline systems. This paper discusses the methods used to develop the model, the challenges encountered and results of the field inspections conducted.
