Abstract:
AbstractAccurate surface meteorological (MET) observations reported reliably and in near–real time remain a critical component of on-scene environmental observation systems. Presented is a system developed by Scripps Institution of Oceanography that allows for rapid, global deployment of ground-based weather observations to support both timely decision-making and collection of high-quality weather time series for science or military applications in austere environments. Named the Expeditionary Meteorological (XMET), these weather stations have been deployed in extreme conditions devoid of infrastructure ranging from tropical, polar, maritime, and desert environments where near continuous observations were reported. To date, over 1 million weather observations have been collected during 225 deployments around the world with a data report success rate of 99.5%. XMET had its genesis during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), when the U.S. Marine Corps 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing identified an immediate capability gap in environmental monitoring of their operation area due to high spatiotemporal variability of dust storms in the region. To address the sensing gap, XMET was developed to be a portable, expendable, ruggedized, self-contained, bidirectional, weather observation station that can be quickly deployed anywhere in the world to autonomously sample and report aviation weather observations. This paper provides an overview of the XMETs design, reliability in different environments, and examples of unique meteorological events that highlight both the unit’s reliability and ability to provide quality time series. The overview shows expeditionary MET sensing systems, such as the XMET, are able to provide long-term continuous observational records in remote and austere locations essential for regional spatiotemporal MET characterization.

Abstract:
The present work discusses the development of a nonlinear data-fitting technique based on genetic algorithm (GA) for the prediction of routine weather parameters using observations from Agro-Met Stations (AMS). The algorithm produces the equations that best describe the temporal evolutions of daily minimum and maximum near-surface (at 2.5-meter height) air temperature and relative humidity and daily averaged wind speed (at 10-meter height) at selected AMS locations. These enable the forecasts of these weather parameters, which could have possible use in crop forecast models. The forecast equations developed in the present study use only the past observations of the above-mentioned parameters. This approach, unlike other prediction methods, provides explicit analytical forecast equation for each parameter. The predictions up to 3 days in advance have been validated using independent datasets, unknown to the training algorithm, with impressive results. The power of the algorithm has also been demonstrated by its superiority over persistence forecast used as a benchmark.

Abstract:
In this study, the current Met Office operational land surface data assimilation system used to produce soil moisture analyses is presented. The main aim of including Land Surface Data Assimilation (LSDA) in both the global and regional systems is to improve forecasts of surface air temperature and humidity. Results from trials assimilating pseudo-observations of 1.5 m air temperature and specific humidity and satellite-derived soil wetness (ASCAT) observations are analysed. The pre-processing of all the observations is described, including the definition and construction of the pseudo-observations. The benefits of using both observations together to produce improved forecasts of surface air temperature and humidity are outlined both in the winter and summer seasons. The benefits of using active LSDA are quantified by the root mean squared error, which is computed using both surface observations and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) analyses as truth. For the global model trials, results are presented separately for the Northern (NH) and Southern (SH) hemispheres. When compared against ground-truth, LSDA in winter NH appears neutral, but in the SH it is the assimilation of ASCAT that contributes to approximately a 2% improvement in temperatures at lead times beyond 48 h. In NH summer, the ASCAT soil wetness observations degrade the forecasts against observations by about 1%, but including the screen level pseudo-observations provides a compensating benefit. In contrast, in the SH, the positive effect comes from including the ASCAT soil wetness observations, and when both observations types are assimilated there is a compensating effect. Finally, we demonstrate substantial improvements to hydrological prediction when using land surface data assimilation in the regional model. Using the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) metric as an aggregated measure of river flow simulation skill relative to observations, we find that NSE was improved at 106 of 143 UK river gauge locations considered after LSDA was introduced. The number of gauge comparisons where NSE exceeded 0.5 is also increased from 17 to 28 with LSDA.

Abstract:
One of the major challenges of the aircraft industries is to develop more effective and lighter systems. This will fits, among others, in a process of reducing fuel consumption by airplanes. Titane aluminum based alloys present a remarkable creep resistance and a high level of resistance to oxidation and low density. These properties are conductive to industrial manufacturing parts, as low pressure turbine for aircraft engines and turbocharger wheels for automotive engines. IRIS alloy (Ti49.92-Al48-W2-B0.08) has been developed by a CEMES team in 2013 in order to meet these industrial expectations. It is processed by Spark Plasma Sintering, a powder metallurgy technique which allows a fast processing with parts near to the final dimensions and a precise control of the microstructure. First tensile and creep tests on IRIS show interesting results which lead us in this work to explore more mechanical properties at a considerable service temperature of 800°C, which is considered as the ultimate operating temperature of TiAl alloys. For this purpose, we explored a new chapter in IRIS' life: the low cycle fatigue behavior. These studies have been supplemented by tensile and creep tests at the same level of temperature. In order to understand and explain these mechanical behaviors, plasticity studies have been performed on each type of solicitation. Finally, we achieve a final study on aged microstructures, to complete our understanding of the impact of the temperature on the alloy

Abstract:
Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a generic term for a number of satellite system which makes it possible for worldwide navigation, deformation monitoring and satellite positioning. GNSS includes four global operational satellite systems BeiDou, Global Positioning System (GPS), Globalnaya navigatsionnaya sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) and the European Galileo. The Galileo satellite system is gradually expanding and currently offers 22 active satellites but will include a total of 30 satellites when it is completed 2020. The purpose of the study was to evaluate Galileo during simulated deformation measurements, individually and in combination with GPS and GLONASS, and to compare these satellite systems. Also, to see these systems deviations with different methods static measurement in a local network, static measurement linked to an external reference station and post processing of single- frequencies in the local network. A local network was established, and data was processed in Leica Infinity. Static measurements with three GNSS receivers was carried out over one day with a session time of nine hours. The measurements were divided into three sessions with movements of one receiver between the sessions. The results from the study shows that for all satellite systems individually and in the different combinations, deviations on millimeter level were obtained for the static measurements in a local network. Generally, deviations on millimeter level were obtained for post-processing calculations with only single frequencies for each system. For post-processing with the local network linked to MAR700SWE; which is a SWEPOS reference station located about 17 km from the established network, the result showed higher and more scattered values where the deviations were generally obtained at millimeter- to centimeter level. Generally, the results showed that Galileo compared with GPS and GLONASS receives deviations similar to the other two systems for all methods. The deviations showed with all three systems combined the best results were achieved. The conclusion from the study is that Galileo is found to have a similar performance as the other GNSS systems in static measurements, though Galileo is not yet fully developed. The results shows that with all three systems, low deviations are regularly obtained. With this Galileo contributes to an improvement when the system is combined with GPS and GLONASS. For deformation monitoring, Galileo is acceptable to use in plane. The methods recommended for deformation measurement are static measurement in a local network and post processing with single frequency measurement, although the latter is not preferred. Connecting a local network to an external reference station is not recommended.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Meta-analysis of 23 between-group direct observation studies of children with ADHD and typically developing peers indicates significant deficiencies in children with ADHD's ability to pay attention in classroom settings. Comparison with 59 single case design studies of children with ADHD suggests generalizability of between-group comparisons. Weighted regression analysis determined that several methodological differences – sample characteristics, diagnostic procedures, and observational coding schema – have significant effects on observed levels of attentive behavior in the classroom. Best case estimation indicates that after accounting for these factors, children with ADHD are on-task approximately 65% of the time compared to 85% for their classroom peers. Children with ADHD were also more variable in their attentive behavior across studies. Implications for conceptual models of ADHD are discussed.

Abstract:
Little research has been reported on the use of visible and near infrared spectroscopy for the prediction of meat quality classes. Therefore, in this study hyperspectral reflectance measurements ranging from 350 to 2500 nm were made with the help of a spectroradiometer on fresh pork loin samples belonging to four different quality classes (Red, firm, non-exudative: RFN; Pale, firm, non-exudative: PFN; Red, soft, exudative: RSE and; Pale, soft and exudative: PSE). The samples were collected from a local cutting house in Quebec, and they were classified by a meat specialist. Data collected from the samples was analyzed using a stepwise approach to identify wavebands useful in differentiating pork quality classes. Discriminant Analysis was used to evaluate the usefulness of the selected wavebands and to classify meat samples into four quality classes. An overall classification accuracy of 76% was obtained for the prediction of pork meat quality classes for unseen data. These results confirmed the possibility of the prediction of meat quality classes rather than the prediction of quality attributes, as is commonly reported in literature. Various classification methods have been used to utilize hyperspectral data for meat quality evaluation. Selection of the best method is crucial in extracting the valuable information contained in hyperspectral observations. Therefore, the performance of four classification methods, Artificial Neural Networks, Decision Trees, k-Nearest Neighbor, and Discriminant Analysis, was compared in classifying pork meat quality using hyperspectral data. Models were developed to sort meat into four quality classes (PFN, RFN, RSE, and PSE), into two classes (pale and red), and finally further into two classes (soft and exudative, and firm and non-exudative) within the pale and red meat samples. Overall, the Discriminant Analysis achieved the highest classification accuracy for sorting meat into four quality classes, its performance was followed b

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to contribute with increased knowledge of younger children 's questions when participating in activities with chemistry as content. The study is based on a phenomenographic perspective, which can be described as that the children's questions represent what they experience about the current topic and its content, to make slime. The method of data collection was observation during the chemistry-related activity; to make slime. The ob-servations were made on two occasions and combined four children, aged one to three years, and with two educators participated, however, an educator at each performance. The result shows that the children ask questions and that the questions are directed towards the content of the activity, which is to make slime. It also shows that there is interest from the children to know more and the desire to actively participate. The result also shows that the questions have a certain increase and that the focus of the questions is addressed in the second observation.

Abstract:
Charles Betts Galloway’s first charge as Methodist bishop in 1886 was Indian Territory. The bishop’s grandfather had held slaves and taken up Indian land; his father had served in the Civil War; he overlapped with Faulkner’s first twelve years; and his daughter’s son shared a desk with Faulkner in elementary school. Galloway’s hope for Indian people was that they would be converted to Christianity. He saw the Indian people he met as dignified and thoughtful in his accounts of visits and meetings with them. In addition to his observations, we have the testimony of Charles Dickens, who met Choctaw Peter Pitchlynn, and a businessman who witnessed the Chickasaw crossing the Mississippi going westward. Indian dress in Faulkner’s works has been seen as symbolic; The chapter explores this theme through the observation of men contemporaneous with the middle times of the fictional Yoknapatawpha.

Abstract:
In order to run a fatigue analysis on a floating structure, it is common practice among ocean engineers to rely upon a large set of test cases, each with a unique set of environmental conditions. For a specific test site, the issue remains of how to obtain a limited set of environmental conditions for these test cases, sometimes known as bins, which can accurately recreate the conditions. When considering a floating offshore wind turbine, it is necessary to obtain a timeseries of not only the wave conditions, but also the wind conditions (and perhaps current, if possible). Thus, it is common to have greater than 5 dimensions in the time-series (e.g., significant wave height, wave period, wave direction, wind speed, wind direction, etc). The creation of bins in two dimensions is quite easily solved by creating an arbitrary grid and taking the mean of all the observations which fall in a specific cell. In higher dimensions, an N-dimensional cell is not easily visualized and so the resulting set of bins cannot easily be graphically represented. In this paper, an efficient, iterative algorithm is developed to convert N-dimensional metocean data into a set of discrete bins of arbitrary size. The algorithm works by setting a tolerance level on the number of observations that must be included in a cell in order to create a bin. If the population threshold is not met, the observations remain unbinned and another iteration is required. Generally, the population threshold can be a function of iteration number so that all observations will be binned. The algorithm can properly take into account extreme data by setting a tolerance level on the N-dimensional distance by which an observation can be included in a certain bin. A quality measure, q, is created to measure the level of representation of the original data by a set of bins, independent of the number of bins. Depending on the tolerance levels, the algorithm can be completed in seconds on a normal laptop for the available data set of 20 years with a 3-hour sampling rate. The observations and bins from a case study are shown as an example of how the bins can be created and visualized.

Abstract:
Ocean going ships are exposed to the environmental forces from waves and wind and the expected environmental loads over the life cycle of the ship need to be taken into account in the design. Classification societies have, by gathering historical observations of met-ocean conditions, developed rules based on semi-analytical models for response and strength, empirically modified to obtain agreement with observations. The safety level of existing ship structures is thus, to a large extent, defined by failure statistics and proven by successful operational experience. The fundamental assumption behind this practice is that observed data are stationary and ergodic. Because of climate change this no longer holds, however, and within a climate change perspective, the historic data will not represent a valid met-ocean description of future conditions. Therefore, the effect of climate change needs to be considered in ship design and operations. Even though there is general agreement among the majority of the world’s leading climate scientists that the world is experiencing climate change, there are still large uncertainties related to any climate projections and this uncertainty must also be taken into consideration. In this paper, the potential effect of climate change on the ocean wave climate is investigated and the possible impacts on safety of ships are demonstrated using the wave induced bending moment as an example. In particular, projections of the wave climate for a location in the North Atlantic Ocean will be analyzed and related uncertainties will be presented. The results will be discussed in the perspective of a risk-based framework for climate change adaptation, which is adopted in order to evaluate different design options.

Abstract:
An existing senior level elective course on vibration in Mechanical Engineering Technology program at Georgia Southern University has been modified significantly. Two major components have been added to this course. Those are theoretical topics on preventive maintenance and laboratory experiments. As a part of laboratory experiments, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) was introduced as a possible tool for vibration analysis for the purposes of machine diagnosis. Utilizing the current laboratory set up for the data acquisition systems, LabView software has been used for FFT analysis of signals from various sources. Four different modules were developed and implemented. The modules are as follows: random variation in acceleration of a toy cart due to roughness of the track and pulley, regular uniform wave signal which is generated by the lateral vibration of a cantilever beam at its natural frequency, signal generated by the imported raw data from other sources (e.g. MATLAB) and vibration signal of a shaft mounted on ball bearings in order to detect the defects in the bearing. Each of these modules is illustrated in this paper with suitable examples and suggested student activities and involvements. The results from FFT analysis have been cross checked using other methods and observations. As a follow up, students have been taken to a local industry where significant amount of emphasis is given to preventive maintenance of machineries by vibration data analysis using FFT. Future possible projects include the analysis of vibration data gathered from actual machine shop. This project opens the scope for greater collaborative effort between local industries and classroom activities.

Abstract:
A new capability to model both crack initiation and growth in eutectic Sn-Pb solder joints was developed and implemented into finite element analysis codes. Two significant developments were needed to create this new capability. First, an ability to accelerate the simulations such that the effects of hundreds or thousands of thermal cycles could be modeled in a reasonable amount of time was needed. This was accomplished by applying a user prescribed acceleration factor to specific terms in the solder model’s damage evolution equation; then, the damage generated by an acceleration factor of cycles could be captured by the numerical simulation of a single thermal cycle. Second, an ability to capture the geometric effects of crack initiation and growth was needed. This was accomplished by replacing material in finite elements that had met the cracking failure criterion with very flexible elastic material. This diffuse crack modeling approach with local finite elements is known to generate mesh-dependent solutions. However, mesh refinement studies revealed that for thermal mechanical fatigue simulations, the mesh dependency is small and has a small effect on predictions for cycles to generate an electrical open. The new crack modeling approach will be described. Finally, crack predictions are compared with experimental observations.

Abstract:
The marine environment represents a large and important resource for communities around the world. However, the marine environment increasingly presents hazards that can have a large negative impact. One important marine hazard results from storms and their accompanying surges. This can lead to coastal flooding, particularly when surge and astronomical high tides align, with resultant impacts such as destruction of property, saline degradation of agricultural land and coastal erosion. Where tide and storm surge information are provided and accessed in a timely, accurate and understandable way, the data can provide: 1. Evidence for planning: Statistics of past conditions such as the probability of extreme event occurrence can be used to help plan improvements to coastal infrastructure that are able to withstand and mitigate the hazard from a given extreme event. 2. Early warning systems: Short term forecasts of storm surge allow provide early warnings to coastal communities enabling them to take actions to allow them to withstand extreme events, e.g. deploy flood prevention measures or mobilise emergency response measures. Data regarding sea level height can be provided from various in-situ observations such as tide gauges and remote observations such as satellite altimetry. However, to provide a forecast at high spatial and temporal resolution a dynamic ocean model is used. Over recent decades the National Oceanography Centre has been a world leading in developing coastal ocean models. This paper will present our progress on a current project to develop an information system for the Madagascan Met Office. The project, C-RISC, being executed in partnership with Sea Level Research Ltd, is translating the current modelling capability of NOC in storm surge forecasting and tidal prediction into a system that will provide information that can be easily transferred to other regions and is scalable to include other hazard types The outcome, an operational high-resolution storm surge warning system that is easy to relocate, will directly benefit coastal communities, giving them information they need to make effective decisions before and during extreme storm surge events.

Abstract:
Epidemiological geographic profiling is a statistical method for making inferences about likely areas of a source from the geographical distribution of patients. Epidemiological geographic profiling algorithms are developed to locate a source from the dataset on the number of new cases for a meta-population network model. It is found from the WHO dataset on the SARS outbreak that Hong Kong remains the most likely source throughout the period of observation. This reasoning is pertinent under the restricted circumstance that the number of reported probable cases in China was missing, unreliable, and incomprehensive. It may also imply that globally connected Hong Kong was more influential as a spreader than China. Singapore, Taiwan, Canada, and the United States follow Hong Kong in the likeliness ranking list

Incorporating Color Change Propensity into Dredged Material Management to Increase Beneficial Use Opportunities. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), December 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/39261.

Abstract:
Dredged materials provide a number of beneficial use opportunities, including beach nourishment, habitat creation and restoration, and other activities. In situ sediment color is important for determining aesthetic and habitat suitability, for beach nourishment, and for other projects. However, dredged materials must meet locally established color compatibility requirements (for example, material cannot be too dark). Often, potential sediment sources are close to meeting specified color thresholds, and previous observations suggest that sediments lighten over time. In response to these observations, this study quantified sediment color change potential in a dredged m aterial management context. Results indicate that dredged material sediment color responded to changes in secondary color components, sediment mixing, and photolytic bleaching improving the sediment color for beneficial use application. Findings allowed for development of a conceptual color change capacity framework and supported development of tools for resource managers to incorporate color change dynamic into planning and operations activities. The following report provides a framework for determining the color change capacity of dredged materials using (1) a comprehensive laboratory approach and (2) a semiquantitative index based on source material and placement location conditions. These tools allow practitioners to incorporate dredged-material color change into resource management decisions, thus increasing beneficial use opportunities.
