Abstract:
This conceptual article reviews current knowledge across relevant disciplines and proposes a research agenda related to the capacity of product-oriented product–service systems (PSS) – which are servitization practices, similar to product–service bundling – to mitigate the obsolescence problem of durable products (in the form of deliberate curtailment of product lifespans or symbolic devaluation of devices). Taking both consumer and company perspectives on this possibility, this study outlines paths for research into how marketing can advance knowledge, particularly in relation to product design and sustainable marketing fields. As a contribution to product–service bundling literature, this article also proposes that different types of bundling strategies can be deployed strategically to enhance environmental performance and reduce obsolescence. The effects of product-oriented PSS on obsolescence depend on the type of added services that companies bundle with their products. This insight offers some implications for managers who might seek to adopt product–service bundling and for regulators and policy makers who want to combat obsolescence.

Abstract:
Purpose – In previous research publications the authors combined the available knowledge about obsolescence in a conceptual model for further research on and appliance in the decision making about demolition. Since evidence-based theoretical research references on obsolescence are rare, the model inevitably had an explorative character. The purpose of this paper is to test and elaborate the model. Design/methodology/approach – A series of case studies were conducted in various residential building estates. In each estate the types of obsolescence (according to the model) and their interrelationships were identified. Findings – The model can usefully be applied; it enables the determination of types of obsolescence. The case studies also show that several types of obsolescence occur simultaneously, and that these types can be interrelated. This touches upon the complexity of cause-effect mechanisms as already mentioned in the introduction. One of the weaknesses is that information is sometimes available for only one point in time, and that the availability of information varies with the type of obsolescence. Research limitations/implications – The study is based on a limited selection of case studies. Further, the causal relationships between the types of obsolescence could not always be revealed. Practical implications – The current model does not distinguish between causes and effects. For further development of the model, cause-effect processes have to be further analysed. Social implications – Actual measurement of the extent of obsolescence per type is not part of this study, but has to be carried out before social implications can adequately be indicated. Originality/value – The paper presents a conceptual classification of obsolescence that turns out to be workable when tested in practice.

Abstract:
Purpose – Since technological lifecycles do not always match hardware/software (HW/SW) lifecycles, obsolescence becomes a major issue in system lifecycle management as it can cause premature and unscheduled replacement of HW/SW subsystems. The purpose of this paper is to report a dynamic model to predict the obsolescence dates for HW/SW subsystems. Design/methodology/approach – The dynamic model estimates obsolescence dates for HW/SW subsystems based on graph theory concept. The model depicts the stages of subsystem obsolescence through transmittances composed of probability and time-distribution elements. The model predicts probability and mean time to obsolescence for line replaceable units (LRUs) over the lifetime of the system. An illustrative example in signaling systems used in a train control system was used to demonstrate the application of this model. Findings – Generally, the short timespan for HW/SW subsystems, which are periodically replaced with newer technologies, results in the development of new product lines by suppliers while they try to support legacy systems for a reasonable period of time. Obsolescence of HW/SW subsystems increases operation and maintenance costs as legacy systems are typically more expensive to maintain. The costs can be reduced by an optimum time to obsolescence derived from the model. Practical implications – This research adds to the body of knowledge on asset management and maintenance strategy. This paper may be of particular interest to reliability, maintainability and availability practitioners and project managers. Originality/value – The originality of this paper lies in developing a graph-based model that predicts probability and mean time to obsolescence for LRUs over the lifetime of the system.

Abstract:
BackgroundPrimary biodiversity records (PBR) are essential in many areas of scientific research as they document the biodiversity through time and space. However, concerns about PBR quality and fitness-for-use have grown, especially as derived from taxonomical, geographical and sampling effort biases. Nonetheless, the temporal bias stemming from data ageing has received less attention. We examine the effect of changes in land use in the information currentness, and therefore data obsolescence, in biodiversity databases.MethodsWe created maps of land use changes for three periods (1956–1985, 1985–2000 and 2000–2012) at 5-kilometres resolution. For each cell we calculated the percentage of land use change within each period. We then overlaid distribution data about small mammals, and classified each data as ‘non-obsolete or ‘obsolete,’ depending on both the amount of land use changes in the cell, and whether changes occurred at or after the data sampling’s date.ResultsA total of 14,528 records out of the initial 59,677 turned out to be non-obsolete after taking into account the changes in the land uses in Navarra. These obsolete data existed in 115 of the 156 cells analysed. Furthermore, more than one half of the remaining cells holding non-obsolete records had not been visited at least for the last fifteen years.ConclusionLand use changes challenge the actual information obtainable from biodiversity datasets and therefore its potential uses. With the passage of time, one can expect a steady increase in the availability and use of biological records—but not without them becoming older and likely to be obsolete by land uses changes. Therefore, it becomes necessary to assess records’ obsolescence, as it may jeopardize the knowledge and perception of biodiversity patterns.

In 21st century, countries have a great interest to move forward based on the knowledge economy. The knowledge economy is described as production and services based on knowledge-intensive activities that contribute to an accelerated pace of technological and scientific advance as well as equally rapid obsolescence (Snellman, 2004). Korean government also has its great passion to develop the knowledge industry in Korea. In other words, Korea has become one of the leading countries that balance national competitive industry and Knowledge industry. This article is focused on convention infrastructures and the strong Meetings, Incentive Travels, Conventions and Exhibitions Alliances (MICE), mainly focusing on Seoul.

Abstract:
Women who wish to terminate a pregnancy, and physicians willing to perform abortions, are subject to increasing harassment from groups which challenge the constitutional abortion right upheld by the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade. Their vulnerability, in fact, parallels the vulnerability of the aboriton right. This Article analyzes the inherent weakness and impending obsolescence of the trimester framework established in Roe. Present medical evidence of maternal health risks and fetal viability demonstrates that the trimester framework is inconsistent with current medical knowledge, and will likely be rendered obsolete by developments in medical technology. The Article suggests that adoption of an alternative constitutional basis for legal abortion is necessary to preserve the abortion right, and explores the utility of two arguments grounded in the equal protection doctrine. Finally, it discusses means of preserving legal abortion within the confines of the trimester framework established in Roe v. Wade.

Abstract:
This study proposes that IT professionals’ behavioral orientation towards IT knowledge and skills updating demands can take on two contrasting forms: updating-as-play or updating-as-work. Drawing on threat-rigidity theory (Staw, Sandelands, & Dutton, 1981), the authors hypothesize that IT professionals who feel threatened by professional obsolescence are more likely to approach updating-as-work more than as play. Results from a sample of IT professionals are consistent with threat-rigidity theory (Staw et al., 1981) in that the threat of professional obsolescence is negatively related to updating-as-play and is positively related to updating-as-work. The authors also find that updating-as-play is negatively related to turnaway intentions and that updating-as-work is positively related to turnover intentions; these findings are consistent with IT theories of job mobility. The authors conclude this study with a discussion of these results and propose future research directions.

Abstract:
Fast moving technologies have caused high-tech components to have shortened life cycles, rendering them obsolete quickly. Technology obsolescence creates significant problems for product sectors that use components that are only available for a short period of time for manufacture and maintenance of long field-life systems. Technology obsolescence can make design changes of systems prohibitively expensive, and results in high life cycle costs of systems. While the impact and pervasiveness of obsolescence problems are growing, existing tools and solutions are lacking the needed information and knowledge to do much more than focus on reactively managing obsolescence. Current methods and tools are limited by data conflicts and data inexplicitness, incompleteness, and inconsistency. In response to the drawbacks of current tools, comprehensive knowledge representation that allows information sharing, reuse, and collaboration on obsolescence issues across different organizations is required. Further, decision making tools that can support proactive and strategic obsolescence management are needed. The purpose of this research is to establish an ontology-based knowledge representation scheme for information sharing, reuse, and collaboration on obsolescence issues, and develop decision making models to support proactive and strategic management for overall cost savings in managing obsolescence. Three primary aspects of this research are investigated. First, ontologies for obsolescence knowledge representation are developed in a systematic way with the use of UML diagrams. The generality of the developed ontology is demonstrated with distinct examples. Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) obsolescence provides the basis for this study. Second, an ontology-based hybrid approach for integrating heterogeneous data resources in existing obsolescence management tools is proposed. Third, decision support models are developed and formalized, and include the obsolescence forecasting method for proactively managing obsolescence, and the mathematical models to determine the optimal design refresh plan to minimize the product life cycle cost for strategic obsolescence management. Finally, the design of the obsolescence management information system is provided along with a system evaluation methodology. Ultimately, the research contributes to the field of knowledge representation as well as design for managing product obsolescence.

Abstract:
Encyclopædia Mundi is an interactive software experience that questions the relationships between the authority of authorship, knowledge, and artificially generated text. The software presents itself as a genuine 90s digital encyclopedia, but the absurdity of the generated text, which is syntactically correct but semantically dubious, subverts the audience's expectation and reveals its true nature as an artwork. In this context, the audience is prompted to reflect on how we socially attribute authority to existing encyclopedic models, as well as the future role of artificial intelligence in contributing to our understanding of knowledge, truth, and reality.

What does knowledge and the authority of authorship mean in a society where artificial intelligence is becoming more involved with our lives? Encyclopædia Mundi is an interactive software experience that takes the form of a genuine 90s digital encyclopedia, but the absurdity of the generated text, which follows correct English grammar but has little or no sensible meaning, subverts the audience's expectation and reveals its true nature as an artwork. In this context, the audience is prompted to reflect on how we socially attribute authority to existing encyclopedic models, as well as the future role of AI in contributing to our understanding of knowledge, truth, and reality.

Abstract:
Purpose. This study investigated organizational development climate within the context of an organization experiencing rapid change in its environment resulting in employee knowledge obsolescence. Secondary purposes were: (1) determine current development methods and behavior; (2) identify preferred development methods; (3) examine the influence of educational background on development; (4) examine the influence length of service on development and (5) investigate reward preferences and their link to development. Procedure. The data were collected through a sample of 550 nonmanager engineers. The questionnaire consisted of individual background information and a modified version of the Work Description Questionnaire for Engineers (WDQE). Environment factors investigated were: (1) organization; (2) management and (3) peer support; (4) communication and involvement and (5) work assignments. Responses were obtained from 320 nonmanager engineers. A chi-square analysis tested hypotheses for education and length of service groups. Summary of Findings and Conclusions. (1) The engineering population differed significantly in their education and length of service backgrounds. (2) Knowledge foundation requirements for entry in the organization in the past five years have increased. (3) Non-degree development is more important for the majority, while degree development is important to bachelor-degreed and shorter length-of-service employees. (4) Reported non-degreed development averaged one course/seminar per year, 2-4 hours of independent reading per week and discussions within the immediate work group. Education groups reported significant differences in internal course/seminar participation and reading behavior. (5) The most effective development methods included a challenging job, reading, an advanced degree, courses/seminars, interdisciplinary teams and internal networking. Education groups showed significant differences for reading and interdisciplinary terms. (6) Primary barriers to development included time, cost, management and workload. (7) The work environment climate for development in the organization was moderate. Peer support received the highest rating; organization, management, and work assignments were rated moderately. (8) The most preferred rewards included salary/merit increases, achievement, advancement, recognition and challenging work. Education groups reported differences in preferred rewards. (9) Moderate opportunity for rewards occurred independent of development behavior. Education groups showed differences in opportunity for challenging work with improved development. Length of service groups reported differences for opportunity of rewards even with increased development.

Abstract:
Designing Resilient Distributed embedded Systems is a challenging task. One of the design issues is to guarantee correct behavior of the system during the runtime. It demands verification that information propagated through the system is reliable. The goal of this thesis is a research and implementation of an analysis that should identify obsolescence of variables due to delays caused by scheduling and communication in real-time systems. Analysis will be designed for Ensemble-Based Component System (EBCS) semantics because it enables precise specification and analysis of important properties. The main problem is to find a suitable input model of the analysis and find its possible limits. Effort should be put in balancing between the level of abstraction given to a RDS developer and power of the analysis itself. The main benefit of the analysis will be detection of situations in which data processed in RDS are outdated and can cause incorrect behavior of particular components.

St-Pierre, François. "La communitas à l’ère de l’accélération sociale : portrait d’une anti-structure pèlerine." Thèse, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/18410.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2015, I conducted fieldwork on St. James Way. As is demonstrated by Victor Turner’s theoretical work, it is this paper’s belief that liminal phenomena, that are manifested during rites of passage such as St. James Way, provide precious insight into the daily life from which it arises from, namely, social structure. The study of extraordinary temporality here is justified thus, by its interdependence to daily life. In fact, liminal phenomena are known to frame crises in daily life. Results of the fieldwork conducted on St. James Way’s extraordinary temporality led to the observation that the impression of ‘being in the moment’ is a prevalent theme amongst pilgrims. The impressive upsurge of pilgrims walking the paths to Santiago, at a time of secularization and individualization, raises questions. If rites of passage are indeed mechanism acting like pressure releasing valve, to which crisis do they owe this surge? Secondly, which aspects of this pilgrimage explain its current appeal? First, it will be argued that St. James Way’s pilgrimage establishes itself as an anti-structure, or put otherwise, an extraordinary temporality. For the purpose of this demonstration, an overview of the stages pilgrims go through will be presented, namely: separation, crisis, adaptation and communitas. Furthermore, we will see that the impression of being in the moment marks the threshold of the communitas. To explain this ‘impression’, this paper invokes a psychological perspective that St. James Way delivers a proper experience of flow. According to Csikszentmihalyi, the flow is known to trigger a feeling of ‘being in the moment’. On the contrary, this research supports the thesis that the structure of daily life fails to deliver an equally optimal experience. Therefore, this paper investigates the processes through which the society of acceleration hinders the experience of flow. Among these processes, emphasis is given here to the impending obsolescence of knowledge in the age of information technology and the altered perception induced by technologies, more specifically, digital devices.

Abstract:
This qualitative study uses narrative inquiry (Connelly & Clandinin, 1988, 1990, 2001) and self-study to investigate ways to further understand and facilitate the integration of holistic philosophies of education with media literacy pedagogies. As founder and director of the Youth Media Literacy Project and a self-titled Imagitator (one who agitates imagination), I have spent over 10 years teaching media literacy in various high schools, universities, and community centres across North America. This study will focus on my own personal practical knowledge (Connelly & Clandinin, 1982) as a culture jammer, educator and cancer survivor to illustrate my original vision of a ‘holistic media literacy pedagogy’. This research reflects on the emergence and impact of holistic media literacy in my personal and professional life and also draws from relevant interdisciplinary literature to challenge and synthesize current insights and theories of media literacy, holistic education and culture jamming.

Abstract:
The Epilogue traces a shift in attitude towards anatomical modelling. In the mid-eighteenth century anatomical models had been praised for their capacity to defy time in the sense that they both resisted the body’s physical decay and promised to provide lasting and timeless sources of corporeal knowledge. However, by the end of the century changing attitudes towards notions of authenticity and techniques of production caused some to doubt earlier anatomical models’ capacity to produce and mediate knowledge about the body. Anatomical modelling continued to be regarded as a useful and promising medical technique. Yet, by the end of the eighteenth century the very models that only a few decades earlier had fuelled much interest among both practitioners and lay audiences, had already started to slip into obsolescence.

Abstract:
The chapter delves into a range of influencing factors that are governing individual and corporate behavior, driven both by changing human circumstances—economic, social, and environmental—as well as rapid changes to organizational cultures and endeavors—models, markets, governance, customers, competition. A veritable confluence of these factors is impinging into workplaces in a never-before-seen manner, particularly in its inherent complexity and constant change. Jobs are being redefined, created, and eliminated at the same time, putting significant pressure on individuals seeking to pursue careers. Knowledge acquired over a certain period is becoming quickly obsolete, resulting in people having to shift gears quickly. Most fail, with consequences impacting both social structures and organizational cultures. Individual behavior is significantly deteriorating toward colloquialism driven by a sense of victimization. How do we address all these challenges and stay on top of the future? This chapter's aim is to distill the answers to this question.

This chapter looks at the unemployment problem in Arab economies. It shows how unemployment has been persisting during the last years with the implied risks of knowledge obsolescence and other economic and social implications. Under the absence of policy actions that are likely to reduce the effects of knowledge obsolescence, Arab economies with high unemployment rates lose in terms of competitiveness and efficiency but also in the development of knowledge economy. Special training programs, besides more business oriented educational sessions, are likely to minimize the impacts of knowledge obsolescence. Descriptive statistics as well as regressions analyzes are used to show most of the dimensions of the unemployment problem in Arab economies.

Abstract:
Globalization and the mushrooming of digital technologies accelerated tremendously during the last decade. Current technology clearly provides the means for acquiring greater amounts of information with more efficiency than ever before. Higher education faces its greatest combination of challenges—economic uncertainty, accountability, and globalization—overlaid by emerging technologies. University leaders face the twin trials of dramatic decreases in public financial support and the increasing cost of resources to avoid technological obsolescence. Nothing has affected education as profoundly as the advent and implementation of technology in higher education. The focus of society in the 21st century will be knowledge-based: learning will be critical and information will continually become obsolete.

Abstract:
The traditional training programs will be increasingly intended as the early stages of a learning process designed to last over time under the direct responsibility of the individual. This is true particularly in cases where professional knowledge is prone to rapid obsolescence. Such is the case of the medical profession where, besides an initial university education and professional development based on direct experience, there is the need for a process of continuous education on scientific research results and best professional practice carried out by colleagues (Manning & DeBakey, 2001; Wyatt, 2000). It is precisely due to this requirement that many educational institutions and agencies in Italy have set up specific continuing medical education (CME) programs.

Abstract:
Cost analysis is essential to enterprises developing plans to deal with product obsolescence. Indeed, cost analysis drives the optimization behind obsolescence mitigation planning and the maintenance of long field life sustainment-dominated systems. There are many different obsolescence mitigation solutions. Determining the optimum plan requires inputs from multiple departments within the enterprise such as maintenance, manufacturing, inventory, marketing, purchasing, etc. Moreover, proper analysis requires system records over a long period. As one might expect, these needs present challenges since proper data comes from different sources across multiple departments. In recent years, ontological models have been shown to be good at relation representation and knowledge management. Ontologies have been used to help with data integration and decision-making. This paper puts forward an ontology-based model and data inquiry method to help locate appropriate departments and related heterogeneous data for current and legacy data sources. The ontology-enabled data inquiry can then more accurately and efficiently improve cost analysis and the planning and management of obsolescence mitigation activities.

Abstract:
Mechanical engineering, like other engineering disciplines, has witnessed maturation of various aspects of its domain, obsolescence of some areas and a resurgence of others. With a history of over 200 years of continuous research and development, both in academia and industry, the community has generated enormous amounts of design knowledge in the form of texts, articles and design drawings. With the advent of electronics and computer science, several of the classical mechanisms faced obsolescence, but with the emergence of MEMS and nanotechnology, the same designs are facing a resurrection. Research and development in mechanical engineering would derive enormous benefit from a structured knowledge-base of designs and mechanisms. This paper describes a prototype system that synthesizes a knowledge-base of mechanical designs by the processing of the text in engineering descriptions. The goal is to construct a system that stores and catalogs engineering designs, their sub-assemblies and their super-assemblies for the purposes of archiving, retrieval for launching new designs and for education of engineering design. Engineering texts have a relatively clear discourse structure with fewer ambiguities, less stylistic variations and less use of complex figures of speech. The text is first passed through a part-of-speech tagger. The concept of thematic roles is used to link different parts of the sentence. The discourse structure is then taken into account by anaphora resolution. The knowledge is gradually built up through progressive scanning and analysis of text. References, interconnections and attributes are added or deleted based upon the nature, reliability and strength of the new information. Examples of analysis and resulting knowledge structures are presented.

Abstract:
In the course of the past decade, there has been increased attention and focus on the challenges facing power plant owners in managing/optimizing performance of their power generating assets. The challenges include aging power plants, changing mix of assets in fleets used for power production, aging workforce, attrition, capturing and retaining knowledge, recruiting new talent, technological changes, obsolescence, economics, environmental regulations, and others. These challenges have resulted in a paradigm shift, creating a need for power plant owners to do more with less, while simultaneously maximizing their operating revenues and return on investment. This paper provides an overview of the challenges facing the power industry as it grapples with these challenges, and knowledge management strategies to effectively harness the power of human resources, power plant processes and technological advances/tools in managing/optimizing the performance of power generating assets.

Abstract:
Knowledge bases are playing an increasingly important role in many real-world applications. However, most of these knowledge bases tend to be outdated, which limits the utility of these knowledge bases. In this paper, we investigate how to keep the freshness of the knowledge base by synchronizing it with its data source (usually encyclopedia websites). A direct solution is revisiting the whole encyclopedia periodically and rerun the entire pipeline of the construction of knowledge base like most existing methods. However, this solution is wasteful and incurs massive overload of the network, which limits the update frequency and leads to knowledge obsolescence. To overcome the weakness, we propose a set of synchronization principles upon which we build an Update System for knowledge Base (USB) with an update frequency predictor of entities as the core component. We also design a set of effective features and realize the predictor. We conduct extensive experiments to justify the effectiveness of the proposed system, model, as well as the underlying principles. Finally, we deploy USB on a Chinese knowledge base to improve its freshness.

Abstract:
In the recent international debate about mass housing estates built during the decades of rapid urban growth after the World War II different approaches coexist. Many studies, including diagnosis about their current state, have been carried out, some of them from a social and economic standpoint; other offer architectural and historical approaches. It has only been in the last years, that urban planning and urban design perspectives have been considered in depth. In the case of Spain, some global visions complement more specific approaches, such as the ones focused on the obsolescence of dwelling typologies and urban forms. In addition to this, there are consolidated teams working on some cities, especially Madrid and Barcelona, which continue developing previous studies started some decades ago. Our starting point is that Spanish collective housing (polígonos) constitutes a huge legacy which needs accurate diagnosis. Our research has been developed from an urban design perspective, focusing on urban forms and free open spaces. The goal is to add some nuances to some excessively generic interpretations, trying to find ‘indicators’ (such as density, urban integration, diversity…) that allow a suitable evaluation of ‘each’ case, besides a qualitative approach. Although there are common factors that have led to a general loss of urban quality, it is necessary to take into account the specificities of each city, context, transformation processes, etc. In this way, future necessary interventions could provide more appropriate knowledge for the regeneration, recovery or reactivation of these estates. This paper addresses with a comparative perspective some case studies of Spanish polígonos built in Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza between 1950 and 1975. Contrasting the original situation at the time of their construction with their current state, the quality of the urban projects (classified in ‘Best’, ‘Good’, ‘Standard’, ‘Poor’) and the resilience or the obsolescence processes has been tested.

Abstract:
In our smart new world, characterized by continuous technological evolution, knowledge is subject to rapid obsolescence and change is the only constant. In this context, teachers are called upon to overcome the ingrained automatic habits of traditional knowledge transmission by developing a perspective that is less tied to individual disciplines and more open to the many facets of reality. Only with a questioning and curious attitude aimed at innovation and pedagogical experimentation can teachers make their message meaningful again and help new generations to develop the habit of flexible and complex thinking in order to orient themselves in a fluid, globally connected and hypertechnological society. Following a course on multidisciplinarity, a group of secondary school teachers embarked on a journey of reading and experimenting in the classroom, realizing that through the transdisciplinary approach theorized by the quantum physicist Nicolescu, one can educate for the future. Identifying and tackling conceptual issues to work on and overcoming the narrow limits of individual disciplines in order to understand complex events is the direction in which teachers and students of today's school should move, so that they will face tomorrow with greater awareness and effectiveness.

Abstract:
Product and design analytics is emerging as a promising area for the analysis of large-scale data and reflection of the extracted knowledge for the design of optimal system. The Continuous Preference Trend Mining (CPTM) algorithm and a framework that are proposed in this study address some fundamental challenges in the context of product and design analytics. The first contribution is the development of a new predictive trend mining technique that captures a hidden trend of customer purchase patterns from large accumulated transactional data. Different from traditional, static data mining algorithms, the CPTM does not assume the stationarity, and dynamically extract valuable knowledge of customers over time. By generating trend embedded future data, the CPTM algorithm not only shows higher prediction accuracy in comparison with static models, but also provide essential properties that could not be achieved with a previous proposed model: avoiding an over-fitting problem, identifying performance information of constructed model, and allowing a numeric prediction. The second contribution is a predictive design methodology in the early design stage. The framework enables engineering designers to optimize product design over multiple life cycles while reflecting customer preferences and technological obsolescence using the CPTM algorithm. For illustration, the developed framework is applied to an example of tablet PC design in leasing market and the result shows that the selection of optimal design is achieved over multiple life cycles.

Abstract:
Within the past few years, there has been a steady, substantial growth of interest in “long-term” archiving of digital data. This problem is particularly acute in many branches of engineering design, where cycles of technological obsolescence in supporting tools happen much more rapidly than those of designed products. Capturing and preserving design knowledge through these cycles is a major challenge that has come to be recognized by many government, industry, and research organizations. The ability to do so has important operational, efficiency, and legal ramifications for the manufacturing industry and its customers. This paper describes this problem, presenting examples of both why it must be addressed and why it is a challenge. In particular it relates preservation of engineering data to digital archiving efforts in other domains as well as ongoing work within the engineering research community on design repositories. As is shown, long term archiving of digital design knowledge draws upon both but possesses its own unique issues. Much of this discussion is couched within the language of the ISO Open Archival Information Systems (OAIS) Reference Model, including a mapping from an existing significant design repository into the OAIS model. In this way, it is hoped that this paper will widen the discussion on digital archiving within the community of this conference as well as help connect to research in other areas.
