Full textThe solar corona is the part of the Sun's atmosphere that extends from the photosphere (solar surface where the photons are emitted) into the interplanetary medium. Its understanding is a major issue because it is the source of phenomena that can disrupt telecommunications, living beings and even climate. The most appropriate tool to observe it is the coronagraph, an optical system obscuring the solar disk in favor of the corona, a million times fainter. My thesis deals with its review, particularly through the spaceprojects :- Solar Orbiter, which will approach the Sun at 0.2 astronomical unit (distance between Earth and Sun), allowing a very high spatial resolution ;- SMESE, in cooperation with China, which should study the corona in the Lymanalpha (and far infrared) ;- and ASPIICS, which will observe the corona in conditions close to a natural solar eclipse, with its occulting disk located at 150 m from the imaging instrument. The first point tackled is the rejection of instrumental stray light, whose optimization is one of the major problems in coronagraphy. The second concerns the methods of observation and imaging in white light, monochromatic imaging, and interferometry, in particular the Fabry Perot. The development and improvement of these techniques will allow considerable progress in terms of resolution and access to the corona ever closer to the Sun's surface, the location yet little known where the solar activity originates
Sirbu, Dan. "Occulter-based high-contrast exoplanet imaging| Design, scaling, and performance verification." Thesis, Princeton University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3665346.
Full textOver the last two decades, a large number of exoplanets have been confirmed with the rate of discovery increasing in recent years primarily as new instruments with improved sensitivities have become available. Direct imaging of an Earth-like planet is now an important goal of the science community. This is a challenging problem for two primary reasons. First, the intensity ratio between the bright star and its dim Earth-like companion is expected to be approximately ten orders of magnitude and, second, the angular separation to the star is very small.
An external occulter is a specially-shaped spacecraft that is flown in formation with a telescope in order to block most of the starlight before it reaches the entrance pupil thereby allowing planetary light outside of the occulter's inner working angle to become visible. Designing a shape for the occulter spacecraft to enable suppression over a wavelength band of interest requires modeling through scalar diffraction theory. Typical designs feature occulters that are tens of meters across at a separation of tens of thousands of kilometers from the space telescope.
In this dissertation, we focus on occulter design and scaling to enable experimental optical verification of occulters in the laboratory. We provide experimental results that establish a 10-5 suppression level in the pupil and 10-10 contrast in the focal plane, which are both approximately two orders of magnitude below the ideal performance of the testbed. We use numerical simulation to study the sensitivity of the occulter design in the laboratory and determine that performance is feature-size limited. We provide the design of a longer and flight-like occulter experiment, and study its sensitivity to determine the expected performance.

Full textOccult Hepatitis B infection (HBV), defined by HBV DNA positivity in absence of HBsAg in the serum was found in 30% of hepatitis of unknown aetiology and frequently among HCV chronic carriers. In order to better understand how HBV escape to diagnosis tests and determine the consequences of this co-infection on HCV chronic infection, we analyzed by ultra sensitive molecular tests developed in the lab, serum samples from 203 HCV chronic carriers before any antiviral treatment. The results from this first study showed that occult HBV infection frequency could reach 20% in France and that occult HBV infection may worsen the course of HCV infection being associated to a bad response to antiviral therapy and aggravation of liver disease. In order to perform the molecular characterization of hepatitis B viruses in cases of occult HBV infections, the whole HBV genome was amplified by a new technique developed in the lab, named Rolling Cycle Amplification (RCA), cloned and sequenced in a HCV transplanted case. The analysis of the cloned sequences did not show the presence of any of the known mutations in the viral genome that may explain HBsAg negativity. Our results suggest, on one hand, the implication of other factors in the suppression of the HBV replication and altered expression of HBV, on the other hand, the importance of extra hepatic sites of HBV replication during occult HBV infections, since it was able to persist after liver transplantation. Our work emphasise the need to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic tools in the case of occult HBV infections especially during co-infection with HCV

Full textIn 1960, the publication of Matin des magiciens, written by Louis Pauwels and Jacques Bergier, marks the beginning of a literary phenomenon commonly known as “réalisme fantastique”. First fuelled by the review Planète then by numerous independant authors such as Robert Charroux, the réalisme fantastique enjoys great success in France, until the late 70’s.This thesis aims at defining réalisme fantastique and determining the reasons behind its success then sudden disappearance. Using Gérard Noiriel’s socio-historical methodology, we suggest an approach that falls at once within cultural and religious history and the sociology of religions, sciences and literature. If the development of réalisme fantastique may be understood using Pierre Bourdieu’s literary field theory, it can also be construed as a way of reshaping religion, which is a distinctive feature of post-war decades. Presenting a particular form of esotericism called “mainstream esotericism”, the réalisme fantastique constitutes a way of thinking lying between the cultic milieu, New Age and occulture.Because of this unusual status, we propose to see the réalisme fantastique as a cultural paradigm that offers an alternative to the prevailing model, governed by science. This paradigm develops its very own knowledge system and values by blending esotericism, religion and science. Finally, this study focuses on the impact of secularization on esotericism. By establishing a link with counter-culture, we seek to demonstrate how the esoteric rhetoric managed to develop itself within French culture, to the point of becoming nowadays an ‘ordinary’ element

Full textThe thesis focuses on political transformation in Benin on a discursive level and illustrates how religious ideas and practices participate in the construction of new political categories and the ideological frame of power. The analysis focuses both on the changes in the political discourse of former president Mathieu Kérékou from the authoritarian period (1972-1989) to the democratic period (1996-2006), and on the popular interpretations of his discourse. Thereby, the thesis also takes up classical themes from political anthropology proposing a new analysis of the semantic and symbolic exchange between the religious and the political spheres; an analysis intended to contribute to the reflection on political power and the State in contemporary Africa
De, carli Manuel. "Le tarentisme et les qualités occultes en Hollande aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles : l’œuvre de Wolferd Senguerd (1646-1724)." Thesis, Tours, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019TOUR2023.
Full textThis thesis is dedicated to reconstruct the reflection of Wolferd Senguerd (Utrecht, 1646- Leiden, 1724) about the tarantula, the wonderful effects of its poison, the prodigious and curative properties of some peculiar music, concerning occult qualities. Professor of “Peripatetic Philosophy” at the University of Leiden, Wolferd is a little known figure in the field of studies about tarantism. However, he is the author of three texts about this topic. In fact, Wolferd takes his doctorate in philosophy, by composing a "Disputatio philosophica inauguralis de tarantula" (Leiden, 1667), among the first independent writings completely devoted to the study of the problematic. Furthermore, he wrote "Tractatus physicus de tarantula" (Leiden, 1668) and "Disquisitio de tarantula" (Rotterdam, 1715). The attention of Wolferd to the wonderful effects of Apulian tarantulas and to the extraordinary musitherapy is part of the wider interest – widespread in the 16th century – in occult qualities. This work consists of three parts. The first part deals with the origin of Wolferd’s interest in occult qualities. It was found that Wolferd had been initiated to the study of the problematic by his father Arnold Senguerd (1610-1667), neo-Aristotelian philosopher and professor of Wolferd during the years of his academic training at the Athenaeum Illustre of Amsterdam. In this perspective, the reflection on occult qualities developed by Arnold was reconstructed. The disputationes, discussed by Wolferd under the supervision of his father and devoted to the study of occult qualities, have also been analysed. Therefore, the considerable influence that the lesson of Arnold exerts on the subsequent reflections of Wolferd about occult qualities and tarantism is recognizable. The second part focuses on the study of Wolferd’s reflection about tarantism due to the analysis of early works: "Disputatio philosophica inauguralis de tarantula" and a wider version of the previously mentioned writing, "Tractatus physicus de tarantula". In both works, tarantism is presented as a phenomenon consisting of many aspects explained by the tradition through the occult qualities. Therefore, the sources of Wolferd have been reconstructed. Furthermore, it has been noted that his aim is to show that these aspects are explicable by alternative solutions to occult qualities. The clarification of these aspects is accomplished making use of the tools of natural history and invoking mechanical actions and fermentation processes, while the aspects considered fabulosi are denied in their own empirical existence. The third part is devoted to the mature reflection of Wolferd about tarantism. It has been shown that a reconsideration of the problem concerning occult qualities and the adherence to the principles of experimental philosophy after 1675 are reflected in the writing of the "Disquisitio de tarantula". Although the author’s intent is to explain the extraordinary effects of tarantism, there are some significant changes in the explanatory patterns that he adopts. The incidence of his pneumatic studies corcerning the elasticity in explaining the therapy of sounds and dances has been highlighted. In addition, the influence exercised by the implicit source of the "De anatome, morsu et effectibus tarantulae" (1696) of Giorgio Baglivi (1668-1707) has been identified. This source is inserted by Wolferd in the new experimental frame that distinguishes the "Disquisitio de tarantula". Due to this source, he can revise his reflection about tarantism, in relation to aspects of the natural history and iatromechanical medicine

Full textAs the origins of occult hepatitis B are still unknown, the aim of our study was to establish how hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection persists. Analysis of S gene sequence in isolated anti-HBc-positive carriers, particularly in a multiple infected patient, revealed that the lack of HBsAg in these patients could not be explained solely by mutations in the major hydrophilic loop of HBsAg. In a second time, we attempt to determine whether HBV replicates in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), which may allow the virus to escape the immune response. We optimized a sensitive and specific method to quantify HBV cccDNA in various samples and adapted a published method for the detection of HBV integrated sequences. HBV DNA, detected in a high proportion of PBMC from HBsAg- patients, was mainly in relaxed form. Replicative (cccDNA) or integrated forms were found only infrequently and in extremely low levels in PBMC. Study of HBsAg+ patients suggests also that PBMC may serve as a passive reservoir. HBV DNA integration in host cellular DNA may cause rearrangement of the viral sequence and may alter the HBsAg expression. It remains uncertain whether the absence of integrated DNA is due to a lack of sensibility or to the absence of integrated sequences. Further investigations are ongoing to clarify the pathobiological basis of occult hepatitis B

Full textIdentification of new factors influencing viral response and HCV persistence is needed. Genetic diversity of HCV genotype 2 and 4 strains in Midi-Pyrénées areas was studied and revealed 8 and 12 subtypes, respectively. Intravenous drug use was the major route of infection for HCV subtypes 4a, 4d and 2a. A microarray-based molecular approach was developed for identification of HCV genotype and subtype. The impact of HCV variability and pharmacological parameters on the virological response was evaluated and showed that ribavirin concentrations and HCV subtype influence the virological response to pegylated interferon and ribavirin. Indeed, patients infected with HCV subtype 1b have a better chance of achieving sustained virological response than those infected with 1a. Finally, we have shown absence of HCV persistence in formerly HCV-infected immunocompromised patients suggesting the complete eradication of HCV

Full textThis work explores the ethnography of madness in Yaoundé. It takes the perspective of phenomenological sociology. More simply, it describes mediations, terms and operativity of madness. It tries to exhume and describe "practice intelligibility" of acts and speech produced by "members", at different levels, about madness. We chose to work on this issue by articulating three main points, all interrelated namely: "street", the clinical and the politics. Firstly, the inquiry' describes scenes, especially in the public space, which represent some of manifestations of madness. This concerns specially the practices of denudation, sexual abuses on/and between people suffering from mental illness (involving sometimes occult economies) and body performances on a degrading and obscene mode. Secondly, the inquiry de scribes discourses that exemplify the different ways of knowing madness by "members" (Garfinkel) in a configuration that includes people and institutional political actors. Are also described and analyzed how actors are facing to the biomedical model, not only in resisting it, or in adopting it, but in resorting, in a complex configuration, to the local knowledges which represent the dominant model in society and which are based on the knowledges of ethnomedecines and all kinds of religious therapies against a State whose the taking care of mental health problems based largely on politicies of enmity and indifference …
Coulon, Jean-Charles. "La magie islamique et le « corpus bunianum » au Moyen Âge." Thesis, Paris 4, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA040027/document.
Full textIndeed, his main treatise, the Šams al-maʿārif al-kubrā (The "Great" Sun of Knowledge), is the most important magic manual based on the Qurʾān, the beautiful names of God, invocations to the angels, etc. Unfortunately, until now, this work has been known to us through editions based on very late manuscripts, very different from the contents of manuscripts of works written by al-Būnī as the many anachronisms point out. In this research, we propose an analysis and a critical edition of part of the "corpus bunianum": Šams al-maʿārif wa-laṭāʾif al-ʿawārif (The Sun of Knowledge and the ExquisiteGraces) in its short version (the supposedly more ancient one), al-Lumʿa l-nūrāniyya (The Luminescent Glow) and other treaties that have been used to write down the Šams al-maʿārif. Editing these texts corresponding to the "historic core" of this vast corpus highlights the oldest parts of the works attributed to al-Būnī and the influences that contributed to the formation of an Islamic magic, referring not only to Greek authorities, Indian, Mesopotamian, etc.., but also to the Qurʾān, the prophetic tradition and magical, mystical and Kabbalistic Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions.Closely linked to realms of power, this magical literature also contributes to their splendour andreflects their evolution

Full textThailand is an endemic area for chronic HBV infection. Despite implementation of HBV vaccination, perinatal HBV transmission remains a major cause of chronic infection. This study aimed at identifying HBV mutants that may be associated with vaccine failure, misdiagnosis of chronic HBV infection and antiviral treatment failure. The dissertation is divided in three parts. In the first part, we analyzed the prevalence of perinatal HBV transmission in a large HIV prevention cohort in Thailand and characterized the HBV vaccine escape mutants. Among 3,349 HIV-infected pregnant women, 7% were found HBsAg positive. Eleven children born to HBsAg-positive mother were found HBsAg-positive at 2–18 months of age. Complete series of samples were available for 9 mother-child pairs. Based on direct sequencing and cloning analysis, 3 patterns of transmission were observed : i) transmission of wild-type variants from mothers with high HBV DNA level, ii) transmission of maternal minor variant and iii) transmission of variants already present in maternal blood samples. The capacity of HBV variants to escape from anti-HBs neutralization in vitro will be further studied using HBV-pseudoviral particles harboring the characterized mutations

Initially, the author exposes the various disturbances caused by these schemes on early warning systems and follows up with repercussions that reverberate through to the Canadian corporate laws framework. Detailed case reviews are also presented to highlight the practical implications of these aforementioned schemes. Legislative solutions to mitigate the potential misuse of derivatives are proposed and ultimately the preferred solution tailored to Canadian financial markets is selected.
