Abstract:
Context. The ASPIICS instrument is a novel externally occulted coronagraph that will be launched on board the PROBA-3 mission of the European Space Agency. The external occulter will be placed on one satellite ~150 m ahead of the second satellite that will carry an optical instrument. During 6 h out of 19.38 h of orbit, the satellites will fly in a precise (accuracy around a few millimeters) formation, constituting a giant externally occulted coronagraph. The large distance between the external occulter and the primary objective will allow observations of the white-light solar corona starting from extremely low heights ~ 1.1R⊙. Aims. We intend to analyze influence of shifts of the satellites and misalignments of optical elements on the ASPIICS performance in terms of diffracted light. Based on the quantitative influence of misalignments on diffracted light, we provide a recipe for choosing the size of the internal occulter (IO) to achieve a trade-off between the minimal height of observations and sustainability to possible misalignments. Methods. We considered different types of misalignments and analyzed their influence from optical and computational points of view. We implemented a numerical model of the diffracted light and its propagation through the optical system and computed intensities of diffracted light throughout the instrument. Our numerical approach is based on a model from the literature that considered the axisymmetrical case. Here we extend the model to include nonsymmetrical cases and possible misalignments. Results. The numerical computations fully confirm the main properties of the diffracted light that we obtained from semi-analytical consideration. We obtain that relative influences of various misalignments are significantly different. We show that the internal occulter with RIO = 1.694 mm = 1.1R⊙ is large enough to compensate possible misalignments expected to occur in PROBA-3/ASPIICS. Besides that we show that apodizing the edge of the internal occulter leads to additional suppression of the diffracted light. Conclusions. We conclude that the most important misalignment is the tilt of the telescope with respect to the line connecting the center of the external occulter and the entrance aperture. Special care should be taken to co-align the external occulter and the coronagraph, which means co-aligning the diffraction fringe from the external occulter and the internal occulter. We suggest that the best orientation strategy is to point the coronagraph to the center of the external occulter.

Abstract:
Aims. We seek to study the Fresnel diffraction of external occulters that differ from a single mask in a plane. Such occulters have been used in previous space missions and are planned for the future ESA Proba 3 ASPIICS coronagraph. Methods. We studied the shading efficiency of double on-axis disks and generalized results to a 3D occulter. We used standard Fourier optics in an analytical approach. We show that the Fresnel diffraction of two and three disks on axis can be expressed using a Babinet-like approach. Results are obtained in the form of convolution integrals that can be written as Bessel-Hankel integrals; these are difficult to compute numerically for large Fresnel numbers found in solar coronagraphy. Results. We show that the shading efficiency of two disks is well characterized by the intensity of the residual Arago spot, a quantity that is easier to compute and therefore allows an interesting parametric study. Very simple conditions are derived for optimal sizes and positions of two disks to produce the darkest structure around the Arago spot. These conditions are inspired from empirical experiments performed in the sixties. A differential equation is established to give the optimal envelope for a multiple-disk occulter. The solution takes the form of a simple law, the approximation of which is a conical occulter, a shape already used in the SOHO Mission. Conclusions. In addition to quantifying expected results, the present study highlights unfortunate configurations of disks and spurious diffractions that may increase the stray light. Particular attention is paid to the possible issues of the future occulter spacecraft of ASPIICS.

We aim to analyze the possible influence of optical ghost images formed inside the telescope and to develop an algorithm for their removal. Methods. We implement the optical layout of ASPIICS in Zemax and study the ghost behavior in sequential and nonsequential regimes. We identify sources of the ghost contributions and analyze their geometrical behavior. Finally we develop a mathematical model and software to calculate ghost images for any given input image. Results. We show that ghost light can be important in the outer part of the field of view, where the coronal signal is weak, since the energy of bright inner corona is redistributed to the outer corona. However, the model allows for the ghost contribution to be removed. Due to the large distance between the external occulter and the primary objective, the primary objective does not produce a significant ghost. The use of the Lyot spot in ASPIICS is not necessary.

Abstract:
Context. The Association of Spacecraft for Polarimetric and Imaging Investigation of the Corona of the Sun (ASPIICS) is a novel externally occulted solar coronagraph that will be launched on board the Project for On-Board Autonomy (PROBA-3) mission in 2023. The external occulter will be placed on the first satellite ∼150 m ahead of the second satellite, which will carry an optical instrument. During 6 hours per orbit, the satellites will fly in a precise formation and will constitute a giant externally occulted coronagraph. The large distance between the external occulter and the primary objective will allow observations of the white-light solar corona starting from extremely low heights of ∼1.1 R⊙. Aims. Developing and testing of algorithms for the scientific image processing requires understanding of all the optics-related and detector-related effects of the coronagraph, development of appropriate physical and numerical models, and preparation of simulated images that include all these effects. At the same time, an analysis of the simulated data gives valuable information about the performance of the instrument, the suitable observation regime, and the amount of telemetry. Methods. We used available physical models of the instrument and implemented them as a software to generate simulated data. We analyzed intermediate and complete simulated images to obtain a better understanding of the performance of ASPIICS, in particular, to predict its photometric sensitivity, effect of noise, suitable exposure times, etc. Results. The proposed models and algorithms are used not only to create the simulated data, but also to form the basis for the scientific processing algorithms to be applied during on-ground ASPIICS data processing. We discuss the possible effect of noise and the uncertainty of the calibration factors on the accuracy of final data, and propose suitable exposure times.

Abstract:
Context. The solar coronagraph ASPIICS will fly on the future ESA formation flying mission Proba-3. The instrument combines an external occulter of diameter 1.42 m and a Lyot solar coronagraph of 5 cm diameter, located downstream at a distance of 144 m. Aims. The theoretical performance of the externally occulted Lyot coronagraph has been computed by assuming perfect optics. In this paper, we improve related modelling by introducing roughness scattering effects from the telescope. We have computed the diffraction at the detector, that we compare to the ideal case without perturbation to estimate the performance degradation. We have also investigated the influence of sizing the internal occulter and the Lyot stop, and we performed a sensitivity analysis on the roughness. Methods. We have built on a recently published numerical model of diffraction propagation. The micro-structures of the telescope are built by filtering a white noise with a power spectral density following an isotropic ABC function, suggested by Harvey scatter theory. The parameters were tuned to fit experimental data measured on ASPIICS lenses. The computed wave front error was included in the Fresnel wave propagation of the coronagraph. A circular integration over the solar disk was performed to reconstruct the complete diffraction intensity. Results. The level of micro-roughness is 1.92 nm root-mean-square. Compared to the ideal case, in the plane of the internal occulter, the diffraction peak intensity is reduced by ≃0.001%. However, the intensity outside the peak increases by 12% on average, up to 20% at 3 R⊙, where the mask does not filter out the diffraction. At detector level, the diffraction peak remains ≃10−6 at 1.1 R⊙, similar to the ideal case, but the diffraction tail at large solar radius is much higher, up to one order of magnitude. Sizing the internal occulter and the Lyot stop does not improve the rejection, as opposed to the ideal case. Conclusions. Besides these results, this paper provides a methodology to implement roughness scattering in the wave propagation model for the solar coronagraph.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We report the serendipitous discovery of a late-type giant star that exhibited a smooth, eclipse-like drop in flux to a depth of 97 per cent. Minimum flux occurred in 2012 April and the total event duration was a few hundred days. Light curves in V, I, and Ks from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment and VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea surveys show a remarkably achromatic event. During 17 yr of observational coverage of this source only one such event was detected. The physical properties of the giant star itself appear somewhat unusual, which may ultimately provide a clue towards the nature of the system. By modelling the event as an occultation by an object that is elliptical in projection with uniform transparency, we place limits on its physical size and velocity. We find that the occultation is unlikely to be due to a chance alignment with a foreground object. We consider a number of possible candidates for the occulter, which must be optically thick and possess a radius or thickness in excess of 0.25 au. None are completely satisfactory matches to all the data. The duration, depth, and relative achromaticity of the dip mark this out as an exceptionally unusual event, whose secret has still not been fully revealed. We find two further candidates in the VVV survey and we suggest that these systems, and two previously known examples, may point to a broad class of long-period eclipsing binaries wherein a giant star is occulted by a circumsecondary disc.

Abstract:
Nephroma occultum is a COSEWIC listed cyanolichen of “Special Concern”. It is endemic to old-growth cedar-hemlock forests in western North America. This is the first study to place N. occultum into a phylogenetic framework using nucleotide sequence and secondary structure data. It also addresses the phylogenetic relationship between N. occultum and N. arcticum. Analysis of fungal Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) ribosomal DNA (rDNA) produced four major clades. The cyanobacterial transfer RNALeu intron (tRNALeu) from N. occultum was separated from that of N. isidiosum and fell between the Eurasian and North American epiphytic taxa. Examination of length and complexity of the folded secondary structures revealed different trends in the ITS1 and ITS2 rRNA regions. Even though N. occultum is endemic to North America, it seems more closely related to South American temperate rainforest species than to the sympatric N. arcticum. Nephroma occultum is alone among the studied species of Peltigerales in having an exceptionally long ITS1 region, and a different tRNALeu intron DNA sequence of the photobiont suggesting association with a unique genotype of Nostoc. It may be argued that the fitness of N. occultum may be influenced by the complex ITS1 RNA structure, a unique photobiont genotype undergoing a genetic bottleneck, no sexual reproduction to generate variation, and the inability to associate with different photobionts to adapt to changing habitats.

Abstract:
Context. This study is made in the context of the future solar coronagraph ASPIICS of the ESA formation-flying mission Proba-3. Aims. In the context of solar coronagraphy, we provide a comparative study of the theoretical performance of serrated (or toothed) external occulters by varying the number and size of the teeth, which we compare to the sharp-edged and apodized disks. The tooth height is small (a few centimeters), to avoid hindering the observation of the solar corona near the limb. We first analyze the diffraction pattern produced by such occulters. In a second step, we compute the umbra profile by integration over the Sun. Methods. We explored a few methods to compute the diffraction pattern. Two of them were implemented. The first is based on 2D fast Fourier transformation (FFT) routines and a multiplication by the Fresnel filter of the form exp(−iπλzu2). Simple rules were derived and discussed to set the sampling conditions. The Maggi–Rubinowicz representation is then proposed as an alternative method, and is proven to be very efficient for this study. Results. Serrated occulters tend to create a two-level intensity pattern, the inner being the darker, which perfectly matches a previously reported geometrical prediction. The diffraction in this central region is lower by two to four orders of magnitude when compared to the sharp-edged disk. The achieved umbra level at the center ranges from 10−4 to below 10−7, depending on the geometry of the teeth. Conclusions. Our study shows that serrated occulters can achieve a high rejection and can almost reach the performance of the apodized disk when very many teeth are used. We prove that shaped occulters must be preferred to simple disks in solar and stellar coronagraphy.

Abstract:
Aims. Our aim was to directly detect the thermal emission of the putative exoring system responsible for the complex deep transits observed in the light curve for the young Sco-Cen star 1SWASP J140747.93-394542.6 (V1400 Cen, hereafter J1407), confirming it as the occulter seen in May 2007, and to determine its orbital parameters with respect to the star. Methods. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to observe the field centred on J1407 in the 340 GHz (Band 7) continuum in order to determine the flux and astrometric location of the ring system relative to the star. We used the VLT/NACO camera to observe the J1407 system in March 2019 and to search for the central planetary mass object at thermal infrared wavelengths. Results. We detect no point source at the expected location of J1407, and derive an upper limit 3σ level of 57.6 μJy. There is a point source detected at an angular separation consistent with the expected location for a free-floating ring system that occulted J1407 in May 2007, with a flux of 89 μJy consistent with optically thin dust surrounding a massive substellar companion. At 3.8 μm with the NACO camera, we detect the star J1407 but no other additional point sources within 1.3 arcsec of the star, with a lower bound on the sensitivity of 6 MJup at the location of the ALMA source, and down to 4 MJup in the sky background limit. Conclusions. The ALMA upper limit at the location of J1407 implies that a hypothesised bound ring system is composed of dust smaller than 1 mm in size, implying a young ring structure. The detected ALMA source has multiple interpretations, including: (i) it is an unbound substellar object surrounded by warm dust in Sco-Cen with an upper mass limit of 6 MJup, or (ii) it is a background galaxy.

Abstract:
Fifteen years ago, the British religious scholar Christopher Partridge proposed the concept of the occulture. Since then, it has been actively used as a working model for analyzing the forms of existence of esoteric elements in modern culture. When Partridge created his concept, he drew on the situation of the late 90s and early 2000s, a time when esoteric elements were entrenched in the culture. The distance between us and Partridge’s work was bound to make adjustments to his theory, to determine the extent of these adjustments, we turn to contemporary narratives that have become hubs of esoteric mythology. Analyzing the screen culture, Partridge separately focused on the case of “The X-files”. For him, this show was the “strongest metatext” that condensed various narratives of the occulture. In the year of Partridge’s book’s release, a new show, “Supernatural”, was released. This show has become a new meta-text, accumulating almost the entire array of esoteric mythology accumulated over the centuries of deviant religiosity...

Abstract:
Occultations of stars by minor planets and comets can be used to determine the diameter of the occulting body. With photoelectric equipment, it might also be possible to measure the diameter of the occulted star or to resolve close binary systems at the same time.On 1983 May 29, (2) Pallas occulted the 4.7-mag. star 1 Vulpeculae. A star this bright is occulted by one of the four largest asteroids only once every 60 years. Timings were sent by 130 observers in Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, Sonora, and Baja California, making it the best-observed asteroidal occultation to date. Asteroidal grazing phenomena were confirmed for the first time. The star is a spectroscopic binary. Several observers timed contacts of the 6th-mag. companion, determining the separation to ± 0.0004 arcsec. An elliptical fit to the timings projected onto the plane of the sky has been made. Unfortunately, clouds prevented timings from near the southern limit, so about 100° of Pallas’ circumference was not observed.

Abstract:
Five strains representing a single novel anamorphic yeast species were isolated from sugar cane. Two strains were from tissue (DMKU-SE38, DMKU-SE59T) and two from the external surface (DMKU-SP385, DMKU-SP403) of leaves collected in Thailand and the fifth (IMUFRJ 52020) from the rhizoplane of sugar cane in an organically cultivated field in Brazil. On the basis of sequence analysis of the D1/D2 region of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, they were classified as representing a single species of the genus Occultifur. The sequences of the D1/D2 region of the LSU rRNA genes and the ITS regions of the five strains were either identical or differed from each other by only one nucleotide substitution. The novel species was related most closely to Occultifur brasiliensis f.a. CBS 12687T but with 0.7–1.0 % nucleotide substitutions (4–6 nt) in the D1/D2 region of the LSU rRNA gene and 2.5–2.7 % nucleotide substitutions (14–15 nt) in the ITS region. The name Occultifur tropicalis f.a., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DMKU-SE59T ( = BCC 61184T = NBRC 109696T = CBS 13389 T).

Abstract:
The article discusses the possible perspectives of interdisciplinary research, standing on the border of the study of culture and religion. The author proposes to illustrate the specificity of such interdisciplinary character on the example of manifestation of Western esotericism in adventure computer games of the 90s. In the first part of the article main occulture myths are identified with the help of methodological frame of the part is C. Partridge’s theory of occulture. The author comes to the conclusion that the occulture makes the plot of games commercially successful. In the second part of the article the author refers to the theory of circulation of cultural product, developed by the Birmingham school of culture studies, in order to understand how from a research point of view, it is possible to use the knowledge of the deep occult influence on the industry of adventure games. The article discusses in detail the three phases of circulation: production, consumption and identity. The author concludes that occult plots and elements of computer games are secondary in relation to movies and literature, but this secondary character also provides them with the commercial success determined by recognition and justification of expectations of players.

Abstract:
A new species of stag beetle, Nicagus occultus n. sp., is described from the Monahans Sandhills of western Texas. Previously, the genus Nicagus contained only two species: N. obscurus (LeConte) from the eastern and central United States and southern Canada, and N. japonicus Nagel from Japan. The discovery of N. occultus represents both an unexpected range extension and an unusual habitat (unvegetated sand dunes) for the family Lucanidae. A synopsis (diagnosis and distribution) for each Nicagus species is given, including detailed distributional information for N. obscurus.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The present work aimed to analyse whether and how single or dual inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Funneliformis mosseae, Paraglomus occultum, and Rhizophagus intraradices) and rhizobia (Rhizobium trifolii) improved plant growth and stimulated nitrogen (N) acquisition of white clover. AMF inoculation significantly (P < 0.05) increased root nodule number by 117‒173%, and additional Rh considerably stimulated mycorrhizal growth. Single AMF or Rh treatment dramatically increased shoot by 36‒281% and root biomass by 16‒36% than non-inoculated control, and dual inoculation of Rh and P. occultum or R. intraradices further magnified the positive effect. Leaf and root N content, root total soluble protein content, root nitrogenase activity, and amino acid (e.g., alanine, arginine, asparagine, aspartate, phenylalanine, proline, and tryptophan) concentrations were significantly increased by single or dual inoculation, while dual inoculation of AMF and Rh had significantly superior roles than single corresponding AMF or Rh inoculation. These results suggested that AMF and Rh represented synergetic effects on accelerating N acquisition of white clover to some extent, while the combination of P. occultum and Rh was the best.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A novel halophilic archaeon (strain B1T) belonging to the genus Natronococcus was isolated from shrimp jeotgal, a traditional fermented food from Korea. Colonies of this strain were orange–red and cells were non-motile cocci that stained Gram-variable. Strain B1T grew in 7.5–30.0 % (w/v) NaCl and at 21–50 °C and pH 7.0–9.5, with optimal growth occurring in 23–25 % (w/v) NaCl and at 37–45 °C and pH 7.5. Strain B1T was most closely related to the type strain of Natronococcus occultus, with which it shared 97.91 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Within the phylogenetic tree, this novel strain shared a branching point with N. occultus and occupied a phylogenetic position that was distinct from the main Natronococcus branch. The degree of DNA–DNA hybridization with the type strain of N. occultus, the most closely related species phylogenetically, was 16.4 %. On the basis of these results, it is concluded that strain B1T represents a novel species of the genus Natronococcus, for which the name Natronococcus jeotgali is proposed. The type strain is B1T (=KCTC 4018T=DSM 18795T=JCM 14583T=CECT 7216T).

Abstract:
The aim of the present study was to analyze the effects of two arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), Funneliformis mosseae and Paraglomus occultum, on leaf water status, root morphology, root sugar accumulation, root abscisic acid (ABA) levels, root malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and root antioxidant enzyme activities in white clover (Trifolium repens L.) exposed to well-watered (WW) and drought stress (DS) conditions. The results showed that root colonization by F. mosseae and P. occultum was significantly decreased by 7-week soil drought treatment. Under drought stress conditions, mycorrhizal fungal treatment considerably stimulated root total length, surface area and volume, as compared with non-mycorrhizal controls. In addition, inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi also increased leaf relative water content and accelerated the accumulation of root glucose and fructose under drought stress. Mycorrhizal plants under drought stress registered higher activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD) and ABA levels in roots, while lower MDA contents, relative to non-mycorrhizal plants. As a result, mycorrhiza-inoculated plants represented better physiological activities (e.g. antioxidant defense systems, root morphology, and sugar accumulation) than non-inoculated plants in response to soil drought, whilst P. occultum had superior effects than F. mosseae.
