Abstract:
Growing uncertainties in rural farming raise concerns about sustainability, prompting interest in diversification. While farmers recognize its benefits, many underutilize it, emphasizing the need to evaluate occupational diversification practices. The study attempts to answer two prominent questions, such as ‘What are the areas (range) of different occupations under different categories undertaken along with the degree to which they are diversifying across the existing categories of farmers? Creative (knowledge-intensive) occupations are now widely seen as a basis for urban economic prosperity. Yet the transitional pathways from a city’s current economy to a more creative economy are often difficult to discern or to navigate. Here we use a network perspective of occupational interdependencies to address questions of urban transitions to a creative economy. This perspective allows us to assess alternative pathways and to compare cities with regard to their progress along these pathways. We find that US urban areas follow a general trajectory towards a creative economy that requires

Abstract This chapter discusses the combination of occupational diversity and specialization that characterized people’s lives in the period 1720 to 1880. While specialization is often associated with modernity, many still relied on multiple sources of income at the end of the period. As evidence from probate inventories makes clear, this was true of both the affluent and the destitute. The chapter shows that specialization and diversification could coexist within the same household.
