We revisit the notion of activist persistence against the backdrop of protest communication on Twitter. We take an event-based approach and examine Occupy Gezi, a series of protests that occurred in Turkey in the early summer of 2013. By cross-referencing survey data with longitudinal Twitter data and in-depth interviews, we investigate the relationship between biographical availability, relational and organisational ties, and social and personal costs to persistent activism online and on location. Contrary to expectations, we find no clear-cut relationship between those factors and sustained

Abstract Herkes için Mimarlık ('Architecture for All', HiM) is a group of architects, urban planners, designers, and sociologists who conduct participatory renovation projects. They were involved in the Occupy Gezi Park movement by questioning top-down urban politics in Istanbul, developing a series of online and on-site events including the Gezi Festivals, interview videos, timelines, zines, and exhibitions. Working from these case studies, this article examines the ways HiM archived the occupied milieu as a means of resistance: How do the materials that HiM documented during the Occupy Gezi

AbstractThis article focuses on the role of protest music in the biggest social movement of recent Turkish history. It is the result of three years of fieldwork triangulating musical and cultural analysis with ethnographic methods. Motives of the protest, strategies of the movement, agency of musicians and participatory performances are investigated and contextualised in an analysis of Turkey's cultural changes. The function of music shifted from framing the protest to encouraging political action and fostering a sense of belonging to the collective identity of the Gezi Park movement. Music ev

This article focuses on the local humor employed in the Gezi Park Protests, one of the most widespread protests in the history of modern Turkey. By analyzing examples of widely circulated graffiti in the social media during and after the Gezi Park protests, I explore the role of socio-cultural and political humor in the protests as a form of resistance, which is intertwined in many ways with local popular culture, as well as global cultural forms of resistance used in anti-capitalist movements such as the Occupy Wall Street movement and public protests in Greece, Egypt, Algeria, and Spain. Throughout the article, it is claimed that the concept of agencement provides us with useful tools to elucidate the constitution of a new dissident community in Gezi Park and the subsequent park assemblies. The sustainability of the current wave of Occupy protests, taking place in various parts of the world since 2011, is a major outstanding question that is of concern to both movement actors and social movement scholars. In this regard, collective identity construction is a key element, as it facilitates the transformation of multi-issue and multi-actor coalitional networks into sustained movement networks. This paper analyses the Gezi protest as an eventful protest that created free spaces of emotions and cognition. I show that the extended, intensified, and accelerated relations that the prote

Abstract This study discusses how activist citizen reporters in Turkey, who initiated a brand-new alternative new media practice, transformed news gathering and writing activities in the process of the Gezi Park Resistance, which erupted in Istanbul in June 2013. A handful of citizens, outraged by the police violence as well as interested in human rights from a journalistic perspective chose to create their own make-shift media outlets or to become medium themselves. The chapter situates contemporary social movements within a world-historical context, starting with the anti-globalization protests since Seattle 1999. It highlights the unique characteristics of these movements, including decentralized, horizontal, autonomous, and anti-capitalist practices of deliberation and participation in urban spaces like squares and parks. The chapter explores the role of the World Social Forum, protest camps, and communication technologies in transforming movements such as the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, Los Indignados, and anti-austerity protests across Europe, L

With the benefit of hindsight, this chapter casts another glance at Occupy Gezi, a landmark protest in contemporary Turkey. We reflect on the pursuit of visibility by activists on Twitter as a means to garner the attention of the Turkish and the global public to the heavy-handed police crackdown of the popular mobilization. We interpret their quest for visibility as a ‘subaltern tactic’ employed to reverse an asymmetry of power through an aesthetics of indignation at the injustice perpetrated against peaceful demonstrators. In the longer run, however, such visibility poses an important dilemma

In 2011 and throughout the ensuing decade, the world witnessed the emergence of many occupation movements such as Occupy Wall Street, the Spanish 15-M movement, and the Gezi Park protests. Notwithstanding the many differences between them, these movements seem to have had something essential in common. As David Graeber, the anthropologist and co-founder of Occupy Wall Street, argued, these movements were distinctively ‘prefigurative’. But what does this concept mean and where does it come from? Prefiguration is often defined as the attempt of political activists or revolutionaries to act consi
