Abstract: This essay examines Francophone and Anglophone Indigenous Oceanian literature and art to argue that through the predominantly Polynesian response to French nuclear testing in Te Ao Mā’ohi (French Polynesia), French colonialism has inadvertently generated one key cultural movement toward post-colonial Oceanian reintegration—one that extends well beyond the Francophone Pacific. The essay first examines the prose fiction of Chantal Spitz, Rai a Mai [aka Michou Chaze], and Déwé Gorodé to understand Te Ao Mā’ohi’s (French Polynesia's) and Kanaky’s (New Caledonia's) shared experiences of F

The dissertation examines the history of modern design in early 20th-century China. The emergent field of design looked to replace the specific cultural and historical references of visual art with an international language of geometry and abstraction. However, design practices also, encouraged extracting culturally unique visual forms by looking inward at a nation’s constructed past. The challenge of uniting these dual, and seemingly contradictory, goals was met in a collaborative book cover design project between Lu Xun (1881-1936), China’s most influential modern writer, and Tao Yuanqing (1

The narrative methodology, inspired by the Hawaiian notion of “talking story,” utilises informal conversations as sites of knowledge production. Volcanic arc magmas are usually thought to receive components from three different sources: the subarc mantle, fluids derived from the subducted oceanic crust and lithospheric mantle, and melts derived from subducted sediments. This thesis re-evaluates this model based on isotopic data for magmas from the Izu, New Britain and Mariana arcs. High (230Th/232Th) ratios of up to 2.5 and U excess over Th in samples from the Izu and New Britain arcs are shown to be inconsistent with a derivation from subducted sediments or the sub-arc mantle and are instead argued to reflect a contribution of a melt

We introduce the first comprehensive publicly available dataset on county-level damages, injuries, and fatalities from natural disasters in the U.S. and present a few facts on the economic and human costs of extreme climate events. Our source is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Events Database, which reports losses for geographic areas largely defined based on meteorological science. We map these areas to counties using geographic tools together with the spatial distribution of population, housing stock, and economic activity. Our estimates are particularly accurate

Systems to alert pipeline operators of existing or impending flood events of concern are important tools as operators work to protect infrastructure at crossings of concern. A critical return period flood alert allows operators to take pre-emptive actions that may reduce consequences involved in major flood events. Gages are valuable tools for collecting data and information about discharge. Physical in-waterway gages include reference gages, crest stage gages, and recording stage gages. For recording stage gages, data can be transmitted electronically and limit the need for site visits. Onlin

The volume of international transfers of major weapons in 2012–16 was 8.4 per cent higher than in 2007–11. This was the highest volume for any five-year period since 1990. The flow of arms to Asia and Oceania and the Middle East increased between 2007–11 and 2012–16, while there was a decrease in the flow to Europe, the Americas and Africa. The SIPRI Arms Transfers Database now contains information on all international transfers of major conventional weapons from 1950 to the end of 2016. It is the only publicly available resource providing consistent data on international arms transfers for th

Geological Survey of Canada Bulletin 610 summarizes some significant research results and future directions from twelve years of field-based research in the northern Cordillera. The Bulletin presents five distinct, stand-alone, thematic sections: 'Oceanic terranes'; 'Pericratonic Yukon-Tanana terrane'; 'Cordilleran magmatism'; 'Overlap assemblages'; and 'Geophysical characteristics'. These papers are not intended to provide an exhaustive summary of all research that was carried out over the course of GEM; however, these themes, along with individual activity results, provide a good starting po
