Abstract. Several climate-driven processes take place in the Arctic fjords. These include ice–ocean interactions, biodiversity and ocean circulation pattern changes, and coastal erosion phenomena. Conducting long-term oceanographic monitoring in the Arctic fjords is, therefore, essential for better understanding and predicting global environmental shifts. Here we address this issue by introducing a new hydrographic dataset from Hornsund, a fjord located in the southwestern part of the Svalbard archipelago. Hydrographic properties have been monitored with vertical temperature, salinity and dept

Ocean gliders are buoyancy-driven autonomous underwater platforms, able to collect oceanographic measurements along vertical profiles during multi-months missions, covering thousands of kilometers. They glide quietly through the water column without propulsion noise and are therefore extremely suitable for Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) of the marine environment. From PAM glider data in the Mediterranean Sea and the Southern Ocean, we illustrate the current and potential uses of PAM gliders for the study of physical oceanography, biology, ecology and for regulatory purposes. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration‘s (NOAA) Northwest Fisheries Science Center’s (NWFSC) Fishery Resource Analysis and Monitoring Division (FRAM) performs multiple fisheries surveys aboard NOAA research vessels and chartered commercial fishery vessels along the US west coast stretching from San Diego, California, to the Strait of Juan de Fuca off northern Washington. In partnership with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Hake survey is extended north along the Canadian West Coast, to Haida Gwaii, British Columbia. Data from these surveys inform the implementation of the Magnuson

The aim of the WP3 “Network Integration and Improvements” is to coordinate and enhance key aspects of integration of European observing technology (and related data flows) for its use in the context of international ocean monitoring activities. One of the dimensions of the integrations is the constitution of thematic networks, that is, networks whose aim is to address specific observational challenges and thus to favor innovation, innovation that will ultimately support the Blue economy. In this context, the specific aim of Task 3.8 is to accelerate the adoption of molecular methods such as ge

Abstract:
Channel Islands National Park (CHIS) has conducted long-term ecological monitoring of the kelp forests around San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa and Santa Barbara Islands since 1982. The original permanent transects were established at 16 sites between 1981 and 1986 with the first sampling beginning in 1982, this being the 33rd year of monitoring. An additional site, Miracle Mile, was established at San Miguel Island in 2001 by a commercial fisherman with assistance from the park. Miracle Mile was partially monitored from 2002 to 2004, and then fully monitored (using all KFM protocols

We need a new way of talking about global warming. UN Secretary General António Guterres underscored this when he said the “era of global boiling” has arrived. Although we have made remarkable progress on a very complex problem over the past thirty years, we have a long way to go before we can keep the global temperature increase to below 2°C relative to the pre-industrial times. Climate models suggest that this next decade is critical if we are to avert the worst consequences of climate change. The world must continue to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and find ways to adapt and build resili
