Full textMotivation is important for people, both in work-life and life in general. Motivation can mainly be divided into intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, which depends on the intentions behind the individual’s actions. An individual with intrinsic motivation performs an activity because it is based on interest and satisfaction. Actions based on extrinsic motivation are founded on something other than the activity itself for example economic reward. The aim of the study was to compare possible differences between male and female university teachers regarding intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The study also examined whether a type of motivation was valued as important and at the same time fulfilled. The study had a quantative approach and the design of the questions in the questionnaire was based on Deci and Ryan’s theory of self-determination (SDT). The study included 296 university teachers and the response rate was 47 %. The results of the study showed that the women valued all but one of the motivational factors significantly higher than the men. Thereby the motivational factor Economic reward was the only one where the differences were not significant. The results also showed that the participants who valued a motivational factor as important and at the same time were fulfilled to a high extent were in a large majority. Very few of the participants valued a type of motivational factor as important and also were fulfilled to a low extent.

Full textCuriosity is an intrinsic aspiration to obtain new information. It has been considered that external motivation inhibits curiosity, but over the last years new research has indicated a partially different relationship. To investigate the interaction between curiosity and external motivation a picture-based learning experiment was constructed, in which the participants were rewarded, alternatively punished for obtaining new information which pleased their curiosity. In the first part of the experiment, the participants scored their curiosity of mosaic-covered pictures. In the second part of the of the experiment, the scored mosaic-covered pictures were consequently presented next to a constant picture. The task for the 24 participants was then to choose one of the pictures in each round. The chosen mosaic-covered picture would then show according to a certain waiting time - either short or long - depending on if it was new or recurring. Whether the new or recurring picture had a short or long average waiting time varied between the two in-group conditions. It was hypothesized that the participants would be externally motivated to minimize the waiting time by learning and favouring the category of pictures with the shortest waiting time. In addition, it was hypothesized that the participants would be curious of the mosaic-covered pictures. In one of the conditions, the participants external motivation coincided with their curiosity, in the other condition the external motivation was in conflict with their curiosity. In a third controlling condition, the dimension of curiosity was eliminated to measure the learning of the waiting time. The experiment showed that more rounds are needed to learn the waiting time in the controlling conditions compared to when the new pictures also had a shorter average waiting time. When new pictures were associated with a longer average waiting time, it divided the participants into two groups. In one group the participant rarely chose new pictures (proportion: 0.75 – 1.0) while the participants in the other group to a large extent chose new pictures (proportion: 0.0077 – 0.069). These differences were also shown in the participants personal traits connected to curiosity. All together, the study supports the idea that curiosity and external motivation can be integrated and that personal traits are related to the evaluation of information.

Full textSoccer is a high intensity sport with intermittent work that puts high demands on aerobic ability. To develop the aerobic ability for soccer players it’s common to use small sided games (SSG). The training method resembles a real match but is played on a smaller area with fewer players. In a sports context, previous research shows a connection between internal motivation and greater perceived happiness to the activity, as well as perseverance in performing activities at hand. This may affect the athlete's development and performance. This study compared the external load (Total distance (TD), sprints (SL), high speed running (HHL), accelerations (ACC) and decelerations (DEC) in SSG between different pitch sizes and number of players. Furthermore it was studied whether there was a difference between the motivation and sizes and whether there was a correlation between motivation and external load. Seventeen soccer players (18 ± 1 years) from a soccerc academy participated in the study. Global Positioning System data were collected from the Polar Team Pro application, allocated from the football club. SSG pitch sizes were 7vs7; 50m x 35-45m, 4vs4; 32m x 20m. TD were longer in SSG 7vs7 than in SSG 4vs4 (p <0.05), players made more accelerations (p <0.05) and decelerations (p <0.05) in SSG 7vs7. A survey based on the Situational Motivation Scale (SIMS) was used to measure the players' form of motivation; Internal motivation, identified regulation, external regulation and amotivation. The results showed no significant differences between SSG 7vs7 and SSG 4vs4 for the motivation forms. The results showed a significant negative correlation between amtoviation and TD in SSG 7vs7, and in identified regulation and SL in SSG 7vs7. This study shows that different layouts of SSG affect the external load of young soccer players in different ways and that the players’ motivation can affect the outcome of training and development. More research is needed on young soccer players to ensure reliable results.

Full textMaintaining one’s employability throughout their lives is becoming increasingly important in today's labor market, which is in constant change. The increasing demands placed on the individual regarding one´s employability can be a reason why the number of students at Swedish colleges is steadily increasing. But the question is how important is the factor employability for students' student motivation. Motivation can be divided into two categories, internal and external motivation (Deci & Ryan, 2000). In a more detailed division, six motivational factors are distinguished; to know, toward accomplishment, to experience stimulation as well as identified, introjected and external regulation (Vallerand et al., 1992). The purpose of this study was to investigate which motivational factors affect an individual's choice to study at college. We have also investigated whether the motivation appears different depending on the respondents' gender and age. The empirical data was collected via a web survey that was based on Academic Motivation Scale (Vallerand et al., 1992), where the participants estimated in what extent they considered each claim to have motivated them in their choice to start studying. Even though the margin was small our result showed that external motivational factors had the greatest impact on the choice to study. Identified was the motivational variable ranked highest, which means to do something because one has decided to do it although it is not fun. That the activity is seen as necessary or because one believes that doing an activity will be useful in future. We found no significant differences between the sexes. However, our analysis showed that there were significant differences in motivation, but these were related to the respondents' age.

(3) I vilken utsträckning påverkar relationen i ledarskapet spelares motivation.
Metod
Aim & Research Objectives
The main objective of this survey was to investigate how coaches leadership and relation to athletes, influence the athletes motivation. It was suggested that the leadership and the coach-athlete relationship (as part of the leadership), are two factors that influence athletes’ performance. Four questions were to be answered. (1) How are coaches leadership perceived by the players in comparison to their own view of their leadership? (2) How is the coach-athlete relationship described by leaders and team members? (3) Is the coach-athlete relationship influencing athletes’ motivation? (4) Is there a relation between leadership styles and athletes motivation?
Methodology
The survey included two ice-hockey teams on A-junior elite level in Sweden (J20). The participants were two head coaches and forty players (n=23, n=17 respectively). The survey was carried out with questionnaires, aimed at both coaches and players. The questionnaires were Leadership Scale of Sports4, Coach Athlete Relationship Test – Questionnaire , and Sport Motivation Scale6. The survey was completed in the end of the season, and did only include the head coach and his players. Subjects in the investigation were required to have played at least six month under their head coach to ensure that coach and players had worked for some time together.
Results
The results showed that players preferred a coach to be fairly authoritarian in his leadership, and to often give positive feedback and instructions about game details to the players. The players did not perceive their coach-athlete relationship as perfect. The players’ average result for the coach-athlete relationship showed that they were more pessimistic to the relationship, than were their coach. The level of intrinsic motivation appeared to be higher than the level of external motivation and amotivation, among the players.
Discussion
The leadership tends to influence players’ motivation. No results indicated that the coach-athlete relationship had had similar effect on the players’ motivation. The subjects showed higher level of amotivation than previous studies on motivation among Swedish individual elite-athletes have shown. It is therefore proposed that a contributing cause that might have had an affect on the players’ amotivation is the authoritarian elements of the coach leadership and low self-determination among the players. Authoritarian and controlling behaviours tend to diminish the intrinsic motivation and increase the external motivation and amotivation, whereas behaviours that facilitate for players to use self-determination tend to increase the intrinsic motivation. How you initiate to increase the players intrinsic motivation should be a part of coaches’ education programs and similar.

Full textA presumption for meeting the demands of the labor market for young workers is to have work motivation. Work motivation is a generic label for factors that influence a person's way of acting in different situations and can be divided into internal and external motivation. Internal motivation means a sense of free will where the individual acts on the basis of interest in creating satisfaction in the workplace. External motivation means creating satisfaction through external consequences. The purpose of this study is to study work motivation with focus on internal and external motivational factors among young adults aged 20-25 years based on a qualitative approach. It is also of interest to study if there is any difference between gender. The material was collected through ten semi-structured interviews and analyzed on the basis of a thematic analysis. The result shows that responsibility, skills development and feedback are internal motivational factors that influence young adults' work motivation. The external motivating factors are rewards, social relationships and clear guidelines. There is also no major difference between men and women in terms of work motivation. In addition, the results show that young adults believe that a job in the end should not be regarded as a job, but as a fun activity in order to achieve maximum work motivation.

Full textHuman resources are probably one of the most important component within organizations, due to the workforce of employees is the original cause of efficiency, capital and maintenance of machines. Employees' work motivation is the essential to study since work motivation is one of the most important tools for employees to achieve a favorable work result. Unmotivated employees would probably contribute little or give no effort at all in their work. In many cases it can be a challenge for employers to maintain a high level of work motivation, because the employees seems to have different needs to keep their motivation at the highest level. The study has been based on external symbolic and external material motivational factors, since external work motivation is important for employees' performance in the work accomplished. In order to give answer to the study's problem formulation a qualitative researching method has been used, in which interviews were made on employees from the case study's two different departments. The study was made on an organization within the industry. This industry is growing larger in Sweden and especially in Västra Götaland County, where the study took place. The study wants to describe the importance of maintaining employees' work motivation and how it can be different between departments. The results of the study showed the importance of knowing the different needs from employees since it has been found out there have been differences in both the demand for different motivational factors and also the employees' views on the definition of work motivation. However, it is important to keep in mind that the study's results are only an indication of how employees can gain increased work motivation based on external symbolic and external material motivation factors, and how employees' work motivation can be differentiated within different departments belonging to the same organization.

Full textMotivation as a process involves everything that drives humans forward and causes them to act in a certain direction. What primarily drive people to act are their needs. Humans feel comfortable when needs are met and discomfort when not satisfied. In order for a student to start, continue and complete university studies, a certain amount of motivation is required. Motivation may be of either internal or external character. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate to what extent the students at Luleå University of Technology considered themselves motivated for their studies. Another purpose was to study the amount of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation among these students. Data was collected using a web survey where the participants were asked to estimate their total motivation, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Estimates were then compared between participants belonging in philosophical versus technical faculty and between students in the beginning versus the end of their education. The material was then analyzed using SPSS. The performance pattern indicates that the students felt motivated to their studies. The feeling of motivation was seen as stable. The results showed that students had a week tendency to estimate their intrinsic motivation a bit higher than extrinsic motivation. Results showed that faculty affiliation or beginning / end of education had no significant effect on estimates of total motivation, intrinsic motivation or extrinsic motivation.

Full textIn most systems, businesses and services, utilitarian motivation systems, that rewards the user with money, promotion, points, and praise, are currently being used. Utilitarian systems harness the users’ extrinsic motivation. In contrast to extrinsic motivation, researchers have developed theoretical models to illuminate the users’ intrinsic motivation; hedonic motivational systems. Intrinsic motivating factors revolve around emotions such as joy and curiosity and has had a major impact on the information technology world in recent years. The scientific community, however, disagree on whether utilitarian and hedonic motivation systems should be combined and of the effect it could have on motivation. Some argue that Gamification can act as a bridge between the hedonic and utilitarian systems because it includes both types of incentive factors. In order to examine whether and how gamification can combine hedonic and utilitarian systems, the authors of this report, designed a digital interface which formed the basis for usability tests. The usability tests were carried out as part of a parallel case study, on asylum seeking youths between the ages of 13-18. Based on the results of the usability tests the conclusion, that with the help of relevant gamification principles hedonic and utilitarian systems can and should be combined to create greater motivation, were drawn.

Full textBackground: Regular exercise is important for both physical and mentalhealth. To maintain regularity in training dedication and motivation isrequired. A person can be motivated by both internal and external factorsdepending on interest. Although people tend to exercise less nowadays, theinterest for exercise and health seems to increase. Not the least, this can beseen on social media where people frequently convey images and posts withtraining messages. Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine whatmotivates women who exercise regularly. Another aim is to examine howsocial media that convey health and training affects motivation for exercise.Method: Six girls from age 18-25 were interviewed. Three girls were activein team sports and three in fitness training. The interviews were analyzedusing content analysis where the codename formed six categories thatillustrate motivation for exercise. Results: The participants reported feelingsatisfaction as important for continued exercise. They were also motivatedby joy, which they felt by increasing their competence in training andthrough the sense of community. Health- and appearance related factorswere also motivating. The use of social media that mediate training couldhelp to increased motivation. Conclusion: Participants were motivated bothby internal and external factors. The internal factors were important tomaintain regularity in training. The external factors were found to beimportant when they did not feel the desire to exercise.

Full textThe aim of this study was to investigate whether student’s intrinsic motivation (IM) and extrinsic motivation (EM) differs depending on which university program the individual has chosen. Previous studies have shown that there is a difference between the level of motivation among different college students. 46 Swedish university students from the Music Production Program and 39 Swedish students at the same university from the Civil Econom Program participated in the study. The results showed that the Civil Economic students had significant differences between motivational types. The majority of Civil economic students estimated higher values in EM compared to IM. The Civil Economic students even showed higher values in EM compared to students from the Music Production program. The values in IM and EM were equally distributed within students from the Music Production program and the Amotivation proved to be low among all students. The grade and the gender of the participants were covariates that were controlled in the study. The participants grade and gender showed to have correlations that were significant with the students’ level of IM and EM. Conclusions from the results are that students from the Music Production program are likely to have goals based on personal interest and external rewards while the majority of civil Economic students only seems to be motivated by external rewards.

Full textThe first part of this review is regarding the lack of motivation amongst pupils in school. Bottom line in this review is about how motivation has an influence in the participation in the pupil’s education. Pervious research shows that motivation affects the participation in education. Previous research also showed that teachers have a responsibility to motivate pupils in school. The pupil’s motivation in education has a big influence of the participation in class. The purpose is to investigate which strategies teachers use to motivate pupils in mathematics and physical education. The review used the methods observations, structured interviews, notes and sound recording to answer the purpose and research questions. Self-determination theory has used a framework in the review. A selection has been done, from the collected material, which proved to be external motivation. The analyse shows that every type of external motivation was visible (external regulation, introjected regulation, identified regulation, integrated regulation) in education. Full textLeadership is important to get the employees motivated to work. In the banking industry the manager has high demands on the employees. Employees in the banking industry are often highly educated and there are different ways to motivate them. Employees can be motivated by both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors. Transformational leadership is a leadership style that motivates employees to do more than what is expected of them. The previous research about transformational leadership shows that it has a positive impact on employees motivation. This study aim to investigate: What meaning does a leaders transformational leadership behavior for the employees intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in the banking industry? The aim of this study is to develop a framework to understand the meaning of the leaders transformational leadership behavior for the employees intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in the banking industry. The theoretical reference frame involves transformational leadership, intrinsic motivation based on Hackman and Oldham job characteristics model and extrinsic motivation. In order to gain an understanding between transformational leadership and intrinsic and extrinsic motivation a qualitative method have been used to gather the empirical data. A case study was made on a local office at one of major banks in Sweden. With a deductive approach questions were created to be able to find the connection between transformational leadership and intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The conclusion of the study shows that transformational leadership has a meaning for the employees intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in the banking industry. This study also find that individualized consideration has the most meaning for the employees intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The behavior with least meaning for the employees intrinsic and extrinsic motivation was idealized influence. The study also show that stress has negative influence on the leadership.

Full textThe purpose of this essay is to highlight the theories about what motivates students to school. Our main question is: What motivates students in school? On this issue, we have created three pieces in questions; How can this be understood on the basis of the concepts of internal and external motivation? Is there any differences in the answers based on which grade they are in? Can we see any differences in the answers between boys and girls? To answer these questions, we conducted a survey with 134 students from grades 1-3. The theoretical assumptions that permeate the entire work are internal and external motivation. Our study shows that both the internal and external motivation has a significant role in students' motivation to school. A clear majority of the students in the study feel that school is important and fun - this indicates an internal motivation in students. But the study also shows that the external motivation is important for students, especially for boys. Another conclusion is that the first year is motivated by far more motivation theories than grades two and three.

Full textThe purpose of this study is aimed at investigating the prevalence of various study motivation types used by students at Uppsala University. This study culminated into two questions. Firstly, What is it that motivates students to study and does there appear to be any difference regarding intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors? And secondly, Are there any differences in the creation of motivation due to the background factors gender and age? To approach the problem we used a quantitative research method, in the form of a survey. We distributed questionnaires in public areas at Uppsala university, which resulted in seventy responses. The theoretical framework used to interpret the collected data was Deci & Ryan's and Ahls definitions regarding intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. This research study also builds upon earlier studies on motivation, which address a number of theories explaining how students create and form motivation for their studies. Owing to the fact that the study and the questionaire were made from a convenience sampling which resulted in a selection with limited numbers, the study will therefore not make any generalizations, however it will highlight tendencies which may raise interest for further research. The results of the study show that the greatest motivational factor is an Extrinct Motivation factor in the form of "Future professional and career opportunities". Additionally the results also show that an intrinsic motivation factor in the form of “Interest in the subject itself” also strongly motivate students. Furthermore, the study indicates that age and gender effect how students are motivated during their studies. The results also display that younger students for instance, are more motivated by their classmates, while from a gender point of wiew men are more motivated by group studies.

Full textThis study examines personal trainers work towards intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The aim is to recognize personal trainers work towards these motivational characters aswell as recognizing these motivational characters ways of expressing themselves in their clients - so that in the extension the character who fits most appropriate to provide a long-term solution for the maintenance of a behavior can be recognized. To examine the issues semi-structured interviews was applied. Intrinsic motivation was identified as will, ambition and interest. Extrinsic motivation was identified as expectations and pressure from the environment, pressure from the trainer and deadline-pressure. All trainers showed an expansive experience from both motivational characters. Intrinsic motivation was however the character who generally characterized the work of all trainers. Intrinsic motivation was also the character of motivation deemed most appropriate for providing a long-term solution for the maintenence of a behaviour.

Full textTitle: Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation - a study of what motivates young employees the most within four retail businesses. Level: Final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Authors: Joel Lawrence Tribble & Abdi Fatah Jimaale Supervisor: Lars Ekstrand Date: 2013 - June Aim: The purpose of the study is that, given the incentives applied in the retail businesses, consider whether it is intrinsic or extrinsic motivators that have the greatest positive impact on young employees' motivation. Our research questions are: Is it intrinsic or extrinsic motivators that have the greatest positive impact on young employees' motivation? What incentives do companies apply to motivate their employees to perform the desired performance? Method: We have done case studies on four industry-leading retail companies, where we conducted four interviews with their respective managers. We also distributed 60 surveys to the selected companies employees where we aimed ourselves to young employees aged 15-30 years. Secondary data in forms of literature and prior research have been studied. The information generated were then processed and analyzed, which then led to our conclusion. Result & Conclusions: We have found that job security and good coworkers are the two most motivating factors among the study's young employees, and these are intrinsic motivators. Suggestions for future research: What are the differences of motivation preferences between different generational groups? Which control system motivates employees the most? Do companies design their incentive systems in an efficient way? Contribution of the thesis: The contribution that the thesis has given is an increased understanding of what motivates young employees more and less within the detail industry, and what incentives the studied companies use to motivate their employees to perform the desired performance.

Full textThe aim was to examine, in a focus group study, high school teachers' perceptions of their own motivation and to find out what factors they believe affects students motivation. The results showed that the factors that most increased motivation in students, is a good relationship between teacher and student, that the students have the opportunity to be involved in their schooling and that they educational options. The teachers' own motivation increased with teaching and student interactions. Motivation in teachers was also shown to decrease with unsafe working conditions and non-educational tasks. Finally teachers felt that their own motivation and commitment in their work also affected students' motivation and engagement.
