Full textFirstly, this work presents a biography of Octave Mirbeau, 1848-1917, journalist and writer, with the aim of clarifying some of the unknown aspects of his life, of putting an end to certains errors which have been perpetuated by literary critics, of sketching an image of this sensitive and generous man who lived in permanent worried state, who was a lover of nature, the arts and travelling and who had a thirst for political combat. Also, the author tries to bring about a better understanding of Mirbeau's patronage of the arts : painting, sculpting and writing. Furthermore, she attempts to summarize this lampoonist's personal opinions on the ways in which art should be appreciated both by its critics and its creators themselves. Finally, this study attempts to promote Mirbeau to the station he deserves in the history of the arts and humanities. In spite of his enormous professional success in life and of the constant devotion he bore toward writers and others artists of his time ; he has never had the recognition he deserves

Full textAfter his death, octave mirbeau (1848-1917) has often been considered e as a frantic or incoherent man. In fact, during his whole life, he evinced a surprising coherence: in his individuality (he is a struggler, a rebel, an idealist, a supersensitive man ), as well as in his political and , aesthetical struggles, and in his literary works. After beding a "proletarian of letters" during some twelve years, he began his own "redemption" by devoting himself to justice and beauty. In his chronicles, short stories, novels and comedies, he tries to open his readers, eyes. In order to realize such a "glance revolution", he is a pratical exponent of "revelation aesthetics" (complete subjectiveness, derision, "demysti-n" , fication"). In order to come out of the dead-locks of contemporary noveln" and theatre, he opened new ways, where impressionism and expressionism are mixed. He opened new ways, where impressionism and expressionism

Full textOctave Mirbeau (1848-1917) is an uncharacteristic French writer who cannot be included into any literary trend. He tried to express his vision of the world by creating his own writing and original aesthetics in order to show the universe through all its dimensions. Cruelty is the favourite way chosen by this famous lampoonist to express his aesthetics. By so doing, he demystified the doctrines and movements that prevailed in the nineteenth century. His main weapon is the "cruel" laughter which makes the reader unsteady and leaves him at a loss in order to give him the opportunity for any available interpretations. Troughout his life, Mirbeau's struggle will be to depict truth and each of its aspects, even the most terrifying and disturbing ones, until is representation of the world and mankind is brought to a certain deee. He refused to soften reality and never cared to scandalize or not his contemporaries sensitiveness. This behaviour constitutes the very basis of his own aesthetics – that is the aesthetics of cruelty

Full textThis thesis aims to examine Octave Mirbeau's model of thought and his break with the dominant naturalist movement of his time. By gradually detaching himself from the conventions established by naturalists, Mirbeau developed a singular writing, characterized by its incisiveness and its opposition to the canons of naturalism. This study will highlight the intellectual and stylistic processes by which Mirbeau constructed a distinct literary voice, challenging naturalist norms, and explore the themes and techniques that mark this stylistic evolution. Through the analysis of his works, this research aims to understand how Mirbeau forged a writing that broke, constant with the literary currents of his time
