Full textDissolved organic matter (DOM) is one of the most important vector of carbon to the ocean. However, DOM is deeply altered during its transit through estuarine waters and its residence time in Coastal waters. The purpose of this thesis is to bring new insights on the DOM composition, role in biogeochemical cycles during land-sea transfer and fate in Coastal areas. DOM analysis was performed with a global and semi-specific tool: size-exclusion chromatography multi-detection (SEC-mDEC), which allow the separation of DOM into six size fractions of different nature. Dynamics of these compounds are studied seasonally in the Aulne estuary and the bay of Brest. The coupling between SEC-mDEC and 3D fluorescence was studied in the estuary.Initially design for freshwater analysis, the adapted SEC-mDEC for estuarine and marine water analyses permitted the demonstration that DOM is involved in several biogeochemical processes. In the Aulne estuary, DOM tracks the contribution of both riverine and marine sources. Substantial changes are made to the DOM by microorganisms and flocculation processes upstream. In the Bay of Brest, ail fractions enable to design a reactivity continuum from the bacterial degradation of the phytoplanktonic bloom. Results demonstrate that the single use of the global dissolved organic carbon is not enough to constrain DOM dynamic in the land-sea continuum

Full textThis thesis consists of three essays in empirical and theoretical international trade analyzing two main subjects: estimation of Gross National product function and strategic policy in presence of exchange rate pass-through and production risk. The first essay offers an innovative approach for analysis the impact on trade of regional trade agreements (RTA) with application to the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Canada and the United States adopted in 1989, which was extended to Mexico as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994. More precisely, we estimate a Translog Gross National Product function and test for endogenously determined structural change allowing for anticipated and lagged responses to regional trade agreements. We found that Canada embarked on a long transition path prior to the implementation of the Canada-US Trade Agreement, a result reminiscent of Magee’s (2008) results concerning RTAs’ trade creation effects. In contrast, the United States experienced an abrupt structural change a year after the North American Free Trade Agreement took effect. This reflects that smaller economies benefitting from larger changes in terms of trade are confronted to more complex adjustment processes than larger economies. In the second essay, we empirically investigate the implications of the choice of dates when imposing local restrictions to maintain convexity in output prices and concavity in factor endowments in the the estimation of a GNP function approximated by a Translog (TL) function. Using macroeconomic data for Switzerland, we compare the TL to a Symmetric Normalized Quadratic (SNQ) function on which global curvature restrictions can be imposed. When the functions are unrestricted for curvature, convexity in prices is violated more often than concavity in factor endowments. The number of points for which both curvature conditions hold is sensitive to the date at which local restrictions are imposed on the TL, but estimated TL elasticities are robust. Through searching for an appropriate date, the TL matched the SNQ’s ability to impose curvature conditions at all points. However, many TL and SNQ elasticities differ in sign and magnitude. The likelihood dominance criterion and in-sample forecasts comparisons favored the TL. Thus, choosing a functional form solely based on the possibility of imposing global curvature conditions is not advised. In the last essay, we develop a strategic policy model inspired by the maple syrup industry. The province of Quebec accounts for 71% of the world’s production. We analyze how strategic policy choices and exchange rate pass-through are influenced by vertical linkages and production shocks which are observed after input prices are determined and “planned production” decisions are made. Downstream competition is modeled as a Bertrand duopoly with a home firm exporting all of its production to the importing country which is also supplied by a domestic downstream firm. We specifically examine two cases depending on whether the input price is negotiated between the input producer and the downstream firm in the exporting country or simply fixed by the input producer. We always assume that the upstream firm sets the input price in the importing country. Our analysis shows that the exporting government should subsidize production/exports and the foreign government should subsidize local production whatever the case chosen. We also show that when there is rationing, the exchange rate pass-through is charaterized by a threshold effect that is quite unlike the sort of theshold effect described in models with menu costs.

Full textThe poultry sector in Canada is regulated by a supply management program which limits domestic production and imports. The latter are constrained by a tariff-rate quota that taxes at a low rate a minimum level of imports or quota and taxes at a high rate any imports in excess of the quota. Under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), chicken imports must minimally represent 7,5% of the previous year’s production. However, this minimum access may be subject to renegotiation, although the current US position is that Canada terminate its supply management programs for milk, chicken, turkey, table eggs and hatching eggs. Requests for the elimination of supply management have been made in the past by the European Union at the beginning of the negotiations of the Global Economic and Trade Agreement and by New Zealand and the United States when Canada has expressed interest in participating in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations. In this perspective, we relied on Canadian concessions under the TPP to determine the effect of a possible gradual market expansion even though the TPP was rejected by the administration of President Trump. Using the model developed by Pouliot and Larue (2012) and updated data, our simulations show that increases in the share of imports in the market can induce price rises or falls along the supply chain from farm to retail, depending on the assumptions made regarding the allocation of import permits and the parameters characterizing the price negotiations. The results highlight the importance of the balance of power and the allocation of import permits among the various actors along the Canadian chicken industry.

Full textThree-dimensional modelling has become more accessible and faster in orthopedics and especially in shoulder surgery. The subsequent morphometric analysis is used to provide a better understanding of shoulder arthritis. The overall objective of this Thesis was to validate the use of a 3D-automated segmentation software in the various steps of patients management.Eight studies allowed validating the automatic measurements calculated by the software, improving the classification of primary shoulder arthritis and then describing the normal and pathological 3D geometry of the shoulder. Accurate numerical thresholds could be established between the different types. The software developed and validated the use of an angle (RSAangle) to better position the glenoid implant in reverse shoulder arthroplasty. The use of simulated range of motion in 3D demonstrated the software’s interest in understanding bone impingements after prosthesis and implant design weaknesses. Finally, the positioning of the glenoid implant intraoperatively with a patient specific guide printed in 3D corresponded faithfully to its preoperative planning. However, planning alone already greatly improved this positioning. This Thesis made it possible to validate the performance and use of a software of three-dimensional segmentation and pre-operative planning. Its application is found in several steps of the management of a patient with shoulder arthritis and should gradually be integrated into the daily practice of surgeons

Full textTo start with, we can notice that at the beginning of the twenty-first century, the economic sphere is already clearly influencing the inheritance rules modification process. Admittedly, this is not an official statement. Writing the law n ° 2006-728 of June 23, 2006 which aims to reform the inheritances and liberalities regulations, the legislator prefers to highlight general objectives. This is a question of "simplifying", "speeding up" and "securing" the inheritance law. If all of this may seem very transparent at first glance, in reality, behind this "a little short profession of faith", there are some hidden economic objectives that cross the whole reform. The simplest example to cite is the survival of a company at the death of its manager. This objective is easily visible; it helps to facilitate the transmission of the economic unit, [...], but also to ensure its management continuity [...]. [...] Further, the dialectics followed by the legislator of the twenty-first century are not only for adaptation of legal norms to contemporary economic realities, but also for promoting these standards as instruments to increase the national economy's competitiveness. Legislation is now conceived as a driving force for the economic situation. [...] Multiplying trade, relaunching growth, enhancing French economic patrimony: these are some of the new values of inheritance regulations, as defined by the law of 23 June 2006. However, is this influence of the economic sphere entirely new or not ? Perhaps, we are dealing with culmination or prolongation of an old phenomenon ? We may indeed think that the legislators have already been concerned with adapting our old French law to the advent of proto-industry, as well as to the development of the trading economy ; in the same sense, it should be noted that, for the most part, the law n° 71-523 of July 3d, 1971 has done nothing more than making an adjustment of the liquidation rules to the monetary fluctuations of the post-war period. Without going further into the details, we can immediately notice how these questions lead us to the present study : a comparative analysis of "economic" and "non-economic" metasources, on the subject of influence of the economic sphere on the inheritance rights in its development since 1804

War has been playing an extremely significant role in human historical civilization. War itself seems to be a “necessary evil.” In order to minimize the casualty, therefore, the ideology of “just war” is the very topic that the thesis is about to discourse. The 9-11 incident happened in 2001 has made people figure out that the terroristic activities or acts of terror are easily able to be put into practice anytime and anywhere. Owing to the dominant guidance of the United States, “antiterrorism,” or “counterterrorism” has become the fountainhead of contemporary wars. “Terrorism” has completely altered the external forms of war, nonetheless, the internal cruel nature of war is still the original one. When the conflicts can not be averted entirely, meanwhile, wars are hardly to cut off. As far as the “Operation Enduring Freedom” or generally so-called “War in Afghanistan ” is concerned, in terms of the United States’ just war and the Muslim radicals’ Jihad, both sides do hold their own specific ideologies, principles or so on and doctrines of justice. Constantly, the term “just war” has been named by the cognition and rethinking among the international communities toward wars. Nowadays, the just war simply includes the justice of casus belli and engagement, somehow, the author myself has found that just war has to fit in with some objective criteria such as “humanitarian concerns,” obeying the “international laws” or some rules regarding wars and satisfied with “public opinion” or other else. While facing the various kinds of menaces to us from China-Com or so called “Mainland China” contemporarily, the only measure that can decipher or even more defeat the artifices about “three-wars” which simply contains the legal warfare, the public opinion warfare and the psychological warfare is the very study for “just war” by all means. Consequently, so far as we are concerned, the merely way to achieve the goal, peace-keeping and is undoubtedly to spread and to put the implication of just war into practice.
