Abstract:

Simeulue Islands are the farthest area in West Indonesia that have potency in fisheries and marine science sectors. One of the marine resources from Simeulue Island are Octopus. The octopus price in the market were prospective than other fisheries commudity. However, we have no strategy to increase the Octopus sustainability. Thus, the research about the socio-economic were very important. The aim of this research was to determine the increasing strategy of small scale fishermen sustainability through the utilization of Octopus potency at Simeulue Island. The research method by using descriptive method with sampling method that used accidental sampling. Subsequently, those samples were analysed by using SWOT Analysis. The result showed that the internal factor in our study are togertherness in capture operational system with value as much as 0,58. Moreover, the weakness generated the lack attention from institutional as much as 0,31. In external factors showed the opportunity from fisheries resources abundantly as much as 0,61. However, the threats showed mostly local fishermen catch the fisheries resources by using unfriendly fishing gear. According to the scoring I grand matrix of small scale fisheries in Simeulue Islands. Thus, this grand strategy in the first kuadran. Abstract:

Productivity linked to upwelling strength is an important environmental factor affecting the production and dynamics of octopus populations. This often takes the form of a negative relationship between octopus abundance and sea-surface temperatures (SST). Enteroctopus dofleini (giant Pacific octopuses) is caught as by-catch in several fisheries, but management for octopuses is data-poor. Visual surveys (in Prince William Sound (PWS) and Puget Sound) showed significant negative correlations of octopus counts with winter SST over the previous 30 months in the waters of eastern Gulf of Alaska, as expected on the basis of life-history parameters. In PWS, local octopus densities varied more than six-fold during the study, and correlations with SST accounted for 48–61% of the variance in counts. Octopus by-catch datasets were not similarly significantly correlated with SST. The negative correlation with SST suggests that octopus populations are influenced by factors regulating marine productivity during larval stages of life history far from the site of recruitment to benthic habitats. Targeted visual surveys for E. dofleini may be more predictable than by-catch statistics, and may be better estimators of variation in octopus abundance.

Abstract:

The shallow-water octopuses of the Philippines are diagnosed on the basis of material collected in a series of expeditions by the Smithsonian Institution to the region between 1978 and 1990. Twenty species of shallow-water octopuses are recognised, 18 in the genus Octopus, and one species each in the genera Hapalochlaena and Cistopus. Three new species are described from Philippine waters: Octopus abaculus, O. nocturnus and O. pumilus. Octopuses reported in the earlier work of G. L. Voss on the cephalopod fauna of the Philippines are reviewed and identifications updated. A diagnostic key and illustrations are provided along with information on taxonomy, distribution, aspects of life history and importance in fisheries.

Abstract:

Subsistence fishery for cephalopods contributes significantly to the local economy of several Asian, African and island states. In addition to being unregulated and undocumented, recent studies indicate that low-scale fisheries can have detrimental effects on marine ecosystems. In the Lakshadweep islands, men, women and children have been involved in spear fishing for octopus for a long time, but there is a paucity of information on the biology and fishery of the octopus species in Indian waters. In this study, we estimated the population abundance, morphometry and sex ratio of Octopus cyanea. Moreover, we examined whether the current octopus spear fishing activity displayed size or sex selectivity, given that larger individuals are easier to spot and brooding females spend more time in crevices. O. cyanea surveys were conducted by snorkeling in the lagoons of Kavaratti and Agatti islands between November 2008 and April 2012. The estimated mean density of O. cyanea was 3 and 2.5 individuals per hectare in Agatti and Kavaratti, respectively. Individual mean weight was 923.36 g and 846.26 g in Agatti and Kavaratti and the male:female sex ratio 1.35:1 and 3.8:1, respectively. Comparison between visual counts and fisheries landings indicated that fishing effort was concentrated in areas of high juvenile abundance but without female-bias. Constructing a long-term database of fishery catches will help with stock assessment and understanding the factors that influence octopus populations. Implementation of a lower size limit of 500 g would act as a precautionary measure against catching very small octopuses.

Abstract:

This study highlights for the first time individual differences in ethology and vulnerability of Octopus vulgaris (i.e. body postures, movements and skin displays) facing passive baited traps. Common octopus exposed to a baited trap during three consecutive first-capture tests exhibited diverse behavioural and body pattern sequences resembling when the octopus searches for and hunts its wild prey. Overall, they first visually recognized new objects or potential preys and rapidly moved out of the den, exploring, grabbing and approaching the trap with the arms (chemotactile exploration), and capturing the bait with the arms and feeding on top over long periods inside the trap. Simultaneously, O. vulgaris displayed diverse skin textural and chromatic signs, the regular pattern being the most frequent and long-lasting, followed by broad mottle, passing cloud and dark patterns. All individuals (n=8) caught the bait at least once, although only five octopuses (62.5%) entered the trap in all three tests. In addition, high variability among individuals was observed regarding behaviour and body patterns during the first-capture tests, which might evidence different individual temperaments or life-history traits. Differences in behavioural responses at individual level might have population consequences due to fisheries-induced selection, although there is a high necessity to assess how behavioural traits might play an important role in life-history traits of this species harvested by small-scale trap fisheries.

Holobenthic and merobenthic octopus fisheries are commonly treated as biological equivalents, regardless of their contrasting life-history strategies. This is the consequence of a lack of species identification and relevant biological information for many species, which has led to a reliance on catch per unit effort (cpue) data for stock status assessments. Using the commercial Octopus pallidus fishery in southeast Australian waters as a case study, the reliability of commercial cpue data as an indicator of stock status for holobenthic octopus fisheries was assessed. To achieve this, cpue and biological information from a fixed position experimental research line were investigated for consistency in stock status patterns and compared with commercial fishery cpue trends. Research line results revealed that cpue could remain stable regardless of size-selective fishing mortality potentially impacting recruitment. The cpue in the commercial fishery was very seasonal and dominated by females during autumn, when both cpue and spawning periods peaked, so increasing the potential for negative fishery impacts on egg production. The inability of cpue to account for the effects of continual fishing pressure on recruitment or seasonal changes in sex-specific catchability, however, indicates that cpue alone cannot provide sufficient information on the status of a holobenthic octopus fishery.

Abstract Octopus aff. tetricus is the target of Australia’s most significant octopus fishery. We utilized both fishery-independent surveys and fishery data from spatially detailed catch and effort logbooks to examine distribution and abundance across the spatial and depth ranges of the population. From this, a harvest strategy was developed to form the basis for monitoring, assessment, and management. Octopus aff. tetricus is abundant and widely distributed in Western Australia, with a biomass density range of 150–1000 kg km−2. This is comparable to Octopus vulgaris fisheries in the Mediterranean and sub-Saharan Africa. From an estimated habitat area of 20 073 km2, total biomass on the West Coast was estimated to be a minimum of 3600 tonnes whole weight with 90% certainty. At the current annual catch of 300 tonnes, overall population exploitation rate is low, given the high natural productivity of the species, which has a maximum age of 1.5 years and two recruitment pulses per year. A formal species name for O. aff. tetricus is required so its contribution to the Australian cephalopod fisheries harvest can be officially recognized.

The common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) is the target species of the cephalopod fishery that exploits two stocks, Dakhla and Cap Blanc, off southern Morocco (26°N 21°N), an area commonly referred to as the Saharan Bank. Octopusvulgaris is also one of the most abundant demersal species in this highly productive area, and plays a key role in the upwelling ecosystem. Spatial patterns of the main phases of the Octopus vulgaris life cycle of the Dakhla stock are described, using trawl surveys carried out twice a year from 1998 to 2003. Using geostatistics and spatial indicators, mature females and juveniles are analysed and mapped to characterize the main features of the spawning and recruitment phases. There are clear distinctions between the spatial patterns of the spawning and recruitment phases: juveniles are more coastal, less spatially dispersed, more anisotropically distributed, and more patchy. Our results suggest that the spatial pattern of the Octopus vulgaris Dakhla stock is different from that of the same species in other ecosystems such as the Mediterranean. GIS reveals that the spawning–stock biomass is globally more accessible to the industrial fleet than to the artisanal one, a finding contrary to contemporary thinking and with important resource management implications.

Recent molecular studies have proved beneficial in providing taxonomic resolution within the Octopus vulgaris species complex, therefore aiding in the appropriate management of this high value global fisheries resource. This study used the mitochondrial ‘barcode of life’ gene Cytochrome Oxidase subunit I (COI) to investigate the identity of shallow-water benthic octopuses in the mid-Atlantic Ocean and their relationship to members of the Octopus vulgaris species complex. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic inference placed individuals collected from two tropical islands, Ascension and St Helena, into a highly supported monophyletic clade with the North Brazilian species O. insularis (BS = 81, PP = 1), extending the known distribution of O. insularis to Ascension and St Helena Islands. Octopus vulgaris and two other member species of the O. vulgaris species complex, O. tetricus and O. cf. tetricus formed a highly supported monophyletic clade (BS = 99, PP = 1). Interspecific distances between the O. mimus group (O. mimus, O. bimaculoides, O. maya and O. insularis) and the O. vulgaris species group (O. vulgaris, O. tetricus and O. cf. tetricus) ranged from 14.7–26.0%, and an estimated date of divergence suggests these groups diverged from a common ancestor between 19.0 and 40.9 million years ago.

Abstract:

Artisanal diving fisheries are a source of income, employment and food security of coastal areas in many countries. Understanding the dynamics of these fisheries, including the spatial and temporal dynamics of fishing effort, gears and species can help to address the challenges involved in fisheries management. We aimed to analyze the differences in fishing strategies undertaken by fishers that use two different diving methods (hookah and free diving), and the conditions and their potential impacts on catches when adjustments to those strategies are applied over time. For this, detailed information of fishing operations from artisanal boats in the North Pacific coast of Costa Rica was analyzed in two fishing seasons (2007-2008 and 2011-2012). Data were collected by onboard observers (fishing site, fishing time, species composition, depth and visibility). Additionally, interviews with divers were applied to obtain information of price per species, species volume and fishing operations. From the total number of trips during both seasons, hookah diving was represented by a sample size of 70.5%, while free diving, with a sample of 69.5%. More than 15 species were identified in each fishing season. Nevertheless, three categories had substantial contributions in both seasons with differences in the proportions for each case: green lobster (Panulirus gracilis), octopus (Octopus sp.) and parrotfish (Scarus perrico and S. ghobban). It is worth noting that an important proportion of catch was retained by fishers for personal consumption purposes, including species of high commercial value. Additional night diving activity, increased the number of dives from one season to another. Besides, cooperation processes in free diving fishing operations, and changes in fishing effort between seasons, defined important changes in fishing strategies. Potential causes of changes in fishing strategies and the implications for management to ensure the sustainability of these fisheries in the long term are discussed.

In the Atlantic Ocean, Octopus insularis (Cephalopoda: Octopodidae) Leite and Haimovici, 2008 inhabits warm and shallow habitats, where it is one of the main targets of cephalopod fisheries. Considering the current trend of increasing seawater temperature, warm-water species are expected to expand their geographic distribution ranges. Ecological niche modeling (ENM) is an important tool to help describe likely changes in geographic distribution patterns of a species in different climatic scenarios. To evaluate changes in the distribution of Octopus insularis over time, the maximum entropy approach was used, which estimated a suitable climatic niche for Octopus under 5 scenarios of global climate change. Four environmental variables were chosen to model the suitable climatic niche of O. insularis in the present, past, and future scenarios. The ENM in different climatic scenarios showed good validation and pointed out an increase of the suitable niche for O. insularis settlement, from the Last Glacial Maximum (21 kya) up to future scenarios. In the future projections, suitable niche space will potentially increase in the tropical Atlantic compared to the current distribution. Modeling pointed out the possibility of expansion from the current range of the species to the temperate northern Atlantic, temperate South America, and temperate South Africa. This may cause potential threats, such as possible extinction of endemic species, habitat displacement of native octopuses, and reorganizations in the trophic chain.

The common octopus Octopus vulgarisCuvier, 1797 is the most fished cephalopod species along the Spanish coasts. Its catches are highly fluctuating due to the short life cycle of the species and to the annual variability of the recruitment pattern, strongly dependent on the environmental conditions affecting the eggs and paralarvae. This study examines the common octopus fishery, the catch composition, and the main features of the reproductive biology of this species in the Gulf of Alicante (Spanish Eastern coast, Western Mediterranean FAO division 37.1.1). The common octopus fishery was studied analysing the monthly landing and effort data by fishing gear from 1994 to 2005. Monthly samplings of the commercial O. vulgarislandings from trawlers and clay pots from January 2004 to December 2005 resulted in the measuring of 1833 specimens to enable analysis of the catch composition, and allowed the biological sampling of 1176 individuals to provide the reproductive parameters of the species in the study area. The length-weight relationship calculated for the species was BW = 0.51 * DML 2.87. The yearly sex ratios (males:females) were 1:1 (trawl, 2004), 1:0.74 (trawl, 2005), and 1:0.88 (clay pots, 2005). The size (dorsal mantle length, DML) at maturity of the species in the study area was 9.67 cm for males and 14.38 cm for females. The gonadosomatic index reached a peak between April and July for males and in July for females. The Fulton condition index was lower in both sexes between June and September, and for males in November-December, whereas for both sexes the values of the digestive gland index were at their maximum between June and December. The energy allocation between somatic and reproductive growth was investigated and the results suggested that the energy spent on reproduction mainly came from feeding, and not from energy stored in the mantle tissues or in the digestive gland

Abstract:

Simeulue is a cluster of islands that rich of commercial fisheries in Aceh waters. Management of the fisheries products is highly related to species identification in order to ascertain the appropriate steps to manage the resources sustainably. Identification using DNA barcoding tools is the right answer for the problem that have not been able to be resolved even by morphological approach. Some of 11 individual samples were taken from 6 sampling points based on lobster’s catchment and cultivation areas. All of the samples were identified using COI mitochodrial DNA resulting 6 species including Scomber scombus, Scomberomorus plurilineatus, Octopus cyanea, Taeniura Lymna, Sympterygia bonapartii and Panulirus versicolor. The DNA bases were aligned using MEGA application and Neigbour- Joining method, Kimura 2 parameters resulting a 690 base pairs nucleotides. Reconstruction of philogenetic tree shows that the species of Simeulue were conjoined into one clade with the sequences downloaded from genebank. It shows that those species were closely related genetically indicating by the bootstrap value of Scomber scombus (100), Scomberomorus plurilineatus (100), Octopus cyanea (100). The results of the study shows that the DNA barcoding tools can explicate not only the identification up to the species level but also the genetic relationship that can be seen from the interspecies bases composition.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis karakteristik dan pemanfaatan sumber daya perikanan skala kecil di Kepulauan Kangean. Penelitian ini berlokasi di Kepulauan Kangean, tepatnya di Kecamatan Raas. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara, observasi, dan pengarsipan data pendukung. Analisis deskriptif kualitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian menyebutkan bahwa karakteristik perikanan tangkap yang ada di pulau-pulau di Kecamatan Raas adalah nelayan skala kecil. Nelayan skala kecil yang ada di lokasi penelitian melakukan aktivitas penangkapan hanya di sekitar pantai dan tidak jauh dari pantai. Alat tangkap yang digunakan oleh nelayan kecil di lokasi penelitian adalah pancing tonda, pancing gurita, gillnet, pancing ulur, dan bubu lipat. Armada penangkapan yang digunakan adalah kapal tanpa motor (sampan) sebanyak 62% dan kapal motor dengan kapasitas <5GT sebanyak 30%. Musim penangkapan nelayan kecil ini sangat dipengaruhi oleh musim dan kondisi ekosistem perairan disekitar.Title: Characteristics of Capture Fisheries In the Kangean Islands of Sumenep, Regency MaduraSmall-scale fisheries play an important role in developing countries where they highly depend on coastal resources. The location of the research was in District of Raas, Kangean Islands. Data were collected from interviews, observation, and supporting data archives. The study used qualitative descriptive analysis. The results of this study identified that the characteristics of capture fisheries in the District of Raas, Kangean Islands, are small-scale fishers. The fishing activities of those small-scale fishers are conducted around the beach. They use trolling, octopus fishing rod, gillnet, fishing line, and folding traps. The fishing fleet used by the small-scale fishers are mostly non-motorized boats (canoe) as much as 62% and motorboats with capacities <5GT as much as 30%. The fishing season of these small-scale fishers is highly influenced by the season and condition of the surrounding aquatic ecosystem.

Genetic variation at five microsatellite loci screened in six samples from NE Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of the Iberian Peninsula was high [mean number of alleles = 18.3, mean He = 0.874]. Analysis of the microsatellites allowed significant subpopulation structure to be identified, consistent with an isolation-by-distance model for Atlantic populations. Differences between pairs of samples separated by <200 km were not significant. Abstract The octopus Eledone cirrhosa and the catshark Scyliorhinus canicula present the same feeding habits and distributional preferences in the Mediterranean Sea. We explore patterns of spatial overlap between these species to address coexistence and infer possible competition from spatial patterns in the western Mediterranean Sea. A spatially explicit modelling approach revealed that spatial overlap mainly responded to the distribution of shared resources, where coexistence is allowed by different ecological processes. Catshark (k-strategy) was highly abundant and widely distributed. However, the fluctuating population dynamics of octopus (r-strategy) explained the variations in spatial patterns of overlap. Spatial structuring across the study area was observed both in population distributions and in species interactions (coexistence or exclusion). Areas with high resources in terms of specific prey items (Catalan Sea) or alternative supplies, such as niche opportunities and ecosystem functions defined by community diversity (Balearic Islands), favoured species coexistence. Sea surface temperature showed opposite effects on overlap in northern and southern regions of the study area, which were not related to differences in species sensitivity. We suggest a surface trophic link, where different phytoplankton communities at each region might have opposite responses to temperature. This triggers contrasting mechanisms of food transfer to deeper benthic communities that subsequently facilitates species overlap. Characterizing how benthic and pelagic seascape properties shape species interactions across space and time is pivotal to properly address community spatial dynamics and move towards ecosystem-based management for sustainable fisheries and conservation planning.

Growth parameters are an important component for the stock assessment of exploited aquatic species. However, it is often difficult to apply direct methods to estimate growth and to analyse the differences between males and females, particularly in tropical areas. The objective of this study was to analyse the inter-cohort growth of three tropical resources and discuss the possible fisheries management implications. A simple method was used to compare individual growth curves obtained from length frequency distribution analysis, illustrated by case studies of three tropical species from different aquatic environments: tilapia (Oreochromis aureus), red octopus (Octopus maya) and the Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus). The analysis undertaken compared the size distribution of males and females of a given cohort through modal progression analysis. The technique used proved to be useful for highlighting the differences in growth between females and males of a specific cohort. The potential effect of extrinsic and intrinsic factors on the organism’s development as reflected in the size distribution of the cohorts is discussed.

This needs to be analyzed in order to establish whether the development provides economic benefit to the society and whether the fishing activities are efficient. The objectives of the study were to study the capture fisheries performance and its impact on the responsible fisheries management in Lembeh (as part of the Bitung City); to know the efficiency level of the fishing activities carried out by fishermen of Lembeh; and to analyze the economic benefit of the capture fisheries to the fishermen. The data were analyzed using descriptive methods. Results found that dominant fishing gears used by Lembeh fishermen were handlines(multihooks-handline, octopus handline, squid handline, and tuna handline), nets (beach seineand gill net), mini purse seine, and fish aggregating device (such as light boat). Those fishing gears were distributed in all villages of Lembeh. Efficient fishing activities are those with efficiency value of 1. From 111 fishermen respondents in Lembeh, 29 of them did efficient fishing operations. The range of investment needed for each fishing gear varied among different types. Mean fishermen’s exchange rate of Lembeh island was 1.29, meaning that there was positive impact of fishing activities on the fulfillment of family’s daily needs.Menurut data statistik Kota Bitung dalam angka tahun 2014, nilai produksi perikanan Kota Bitung mengalami kenaikan. Kenaikan ini perlu di analisis apakah memberi manfaat secara ekonomi kepada masyarakat dan apakah penangkapannya sudah efisien. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah 1) menganalisis keragaan perikanan tangkap dan dampaknya pada pengelolaan perikanan yang bertanggung jawab di Pulau Lembeh (yang merupakan bagian dari Kota Bitung), 2) menetapkan tingkat efisiensi kegiatan perikanan tangkap yang telah dilakukan oleh nelayan di Pulau Lembeh, dan 3) menganalisa manfaat kegiatan perikanan tangkap secara ekonomi bagi para nelayan. Most marine populations are in decline (Pauly, 2000; Leon, 2003) and reports of stable or increasing stocks are viewed with some scepticism (Myers and Worm, 2003). Compensation for decreasing fish stocks by cephalopod populations has been theorized and reported (O'Dor, 1998; Chotiyaputta et al., 2002). Around Hokkaido Island (northern Japan), catch per unit effort (CPUE) of Enteroctopus dofleini is relatively stable (Hokkaido Fisheries Annual Report, 1986-2001). Decreasing inter-specific competition for food, reduced predation pressure by large fishes and a prevailing temperature regime are possible factors in the stability of the E dofleini catch rate; but so is the flexible behaviour of octopuses. Neural and behaviour studies (Young, 1961; Mather, 1994; Yamazaki et al., 2002) have alluded to the benefits of the adaptability of octopus behaviour, but no suggestions are as succinct as our findings during a recent radio acoustic tagging study where tagged octopuses stayed in smaller home ranges for longer periods of time than expected (Mather et al., 1985) while feeding off of a gill net. We propose that these findings have direct implications to understanding of the ecology of the species and are an example of why in situ monitoring provided by Radio Acoustic Positioning (RAP) technology is an essential part of the planning, and implantation of regional management plans and the development and monitoring of marine protected areas.

Compared to their shelf-living relatives, the biology and ecology of most pelagic and deep-sea cephalopods is currently rather unknown owing to the difficulties to catch them. To cover the lack of information on these cephalopods, scientists have to make use of the limited and fragmentary data gathered from different sources such as sporadic captures, strandings or stomach contents of their predators. Here, we give some biological and ecological information on eleven uncommon pelagic and deep-sea cephalopods collected during more than fifteen years of fisheries surveys in the western Mediterranean Sea. The cephalopods investigated include two epipelagic octopuses (Ocythoe tuberculata and Tremoctopus violaceus), one deep-sea cirrate octopus (Opisthoteuthis calypso), the sepiolid Stoloteuthis leucoptera and seven teuthoid species inhabiting preferentially mesopelagic and bathypelagic waters (Abraliopsis morisii, Ancistrocheirus lesueurii, Brachioteuthis riisei, Chiroteuthis veranyi, Chtenopteryx sicula, Onychoteuthis banksii and Taonius pavo). Although all of these species are either cosmopolitan or present a wide distribution in other oceans, they are nevertheless relatively rare in catches, and therefore remain poorly known. The finding of T. pavo represents the first record of this cephalopod in the Mediterranean.

Coral reefs are quite diverse ecosystems that carry out several ecological functions and plays a relevant socioeconomic role. The artisan fishing of octopi (Octopus spp.) is practiced for the survival of part of the inhabitants of Coroa Vermelha community, in the south of the state of Bahia. We intended to study the knowledge of the octopi fishermen of Coroa Vermelha using the comprehensive ethnoecological proposal of Marques. The data were collected between July, 2006 and April, 2008 through direct observation and from interviews with fishermen met by chance and through the "native specialists" criterion. Twenty semi-structured interviews were carried out following an itinerary of pre-established questions about the activity of octopi capture, and the biological and ecological aspects of the resource. The data showed that the fishermen have knowledge about biological and ecological aspects of the octopi. Two capture techniques are used: octopus fishing (polvejamento) in the reefs and through diving. Two specific folk are recognized: the "normal octopus" (Octopus insularis) and the "east octopus" (Octopus macropus (?)). The intervieews demonstrated ecological knowledge sometimes compatible with the scientific literature, mainly in which concerns the trophic ecology and behavior of the octopi.

The fishery for octopus in Northwest Mexico has increased to over 2,000 tons annually, but to date the specific composition of the catch has been ignored. With at least three main species targeted by artisanal fisheries in the region with distinct life histories, the lack of basic biological information about the distribution, metapopulation size and structure of each species could impede effective fisheries management to avoid overexploitation. We tested if different life histories of three species of octopus could help predict observed patterns of genetic diversity, population dynamics, structure and connectivity and how this information could be relevant to the sustainable management of the fishery. We sequenced two mitochondrial genes and genotyped seven nuclear microsatellite loci to identify the distribution of each species in 20 locations from the Gulf of California and the west coast of the Baja California peninsula. We tested five hypotheses derived from population genetic theory based on differences in the fecundity and dispersal potential for each species. We discovered that Octopus bimaculoides with low fecundity and direct development (without a planktonic phase) had lower average effective population size and genetic diversity, but higher levels of kinship, population structure, and richness of private alleles, than the other two species. These features indicated limited dispersal and high local recruitment. In contrast, O. bimaculatus and O. hubbsorum with higher fecundity and planktonic phase as paralarvae had higher effective population size and genetic diversity, and overall lower kinship and population structure than O. bimaculoides. These observations supported higher levels of gene flow over a larger geographical scale. O. bimaculatus with the longest planktonic paralarval duration and therefore larger dispersal potential had differences in the calculated parameters possibly associated with increased connectivity. We propose O. bimaculoides is more susceptible to over exploitation of small, isolated populations and could have longer recovery times than the other two species. This species may benefit from distinct fishery management within each local population. O. bimaculatus and O. hubbsorum may benefit from fishery management that takes into account metapopulation structure over larger geographic scales and the directionality and magnitude of larval dispersal driven by ocean currents and population connectivity among individuals of each locality. The distribution of each species and variations in their reproductive phenology is also important to consider when establishing marine reserves or seasonal fishing closures.

Abstract The assemblages of demersal fish and associated species of the Mauritanian continental shelf are characterized on the basis of annual trawl surveys conducted during the period 1987–1999. Species composition is dominated by exploited species (Dentex spp., Pagellus bellottii, and Octopus vulgaris). Dominance curves (Abundance Biomass Comparison plots) were used to evaluate the impact of fisheries, which have increased in magnitude over several decades. The diagnosis of a “stressed” assemblage seems to converge with the results of a similar study conducted off Senegal, but here there was no trend in impact during the period of study. The sensitivity of the present results to the various ways of considering the available taxonomic information is also analysed.

After individual quotas were imposed in 1990, the fishery for Jasus edwardsii in the Gisborne area showed continuing declines in catch and catch rate to 1993, and the total quota could not be caught in this area. There were few legal-sized but many sublegal-sized lobsters. Pots caused mortality of sublegal lobsters through handling, pot-related Octopus predation, and thefts from commercial pots. The industry, in conjunction with recreational fishers and Maori, developed a scheme to address these problems. The aim was to increase landed value to compensate for quota reductions, and to do this by landing more lobsters in winter (when prices were higher) and landing smaller lobsters (which had a higher unit price). A shortened season was designed to reduce pot-related mortality. Part of the scheme—a proposal to reduce the minimum legal size of male lobsters—caused controversy. However, the package was evaluated with a simple model and then accepted by the Minister of Fisheries. Results were substantially increased catch rates since 1993, a successful shift to a winter fishery, and a shift in length frequencies toward larger sizes. A simple size-structured model fitted to the fishery data and used to evaluate future management options is also described.

“Octopus” rubescens Berry, 1953 is an octopus of temperate waters of the western coast of North America. This paper presents the first record of “O.” rubescens from the tropical Mexican Pacific. Twelve octopuses were studied; 10 were collected in tide pools from five localities and two mature males were caught by fishermen in Oaxaca. We used morphometric characters and anatomical features of the digestive tract to identify the species. The five localities along the Mexican Pacific coast provide solid evidence that populations of this species have become established in tropical waters.

Perikanan gurita di Kabupaten Banggai Laut termasuk kategori perikanan yang small scale fisheries. Hal ini dikarenakan nelayan Banggai Laut menangkap gurita dengan menggunakan kapal dan alat tangkap yang sederhana. Tren CPUE gurita dalam 3 tahun terakhir (2014-2016) menunjukkan penurunan yang cukup drastis. Penurunan yang terjadi mengindikasikan bahwa tingkat pemanfaatan daerah penangkapan gurita di daerah tersebut sudah terjadi penangkapan yang berlebih. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa gurita di Kabupaten Banggai Laut belum dikelola secara optimal. Pengelolaan hanya melakukan penangkapan terus menerus tanpa mempertimbangkan dampak terhadap sumberdaya gurita. Pengelolaan secara benar perlu dilakukan untuk menjaga potensi sumberdaya gurita agar tetap lestari. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk merumuskan strategi pengelolaan daerah penangkapan octopus di Kabupaten Banggai Laut. Pendekatan strategi pengelolaan menggunakan pendekatan strategi Strength, Weakness, Oppurtunity, Threats (SWOT). Strategi pengelolaan perikanan gurita di Kabupaten Banggai Laut dilakukan dengan 1) Strategi SO dengan opsi strategi: Pengembangan kerjasama dengan industri pengolahan ikan dan memanfaatkan potensi perikanan gurita 2) Strategi ST dengan opsi strategi: Menetapkan aturan dan sanksi yang tegas terkait nelayan yang melakukan illegal fishing dan membatasi armada penangkapan ikan. 3) Strategi WO dengan opsi strategi: peningkatan kualitas SDM dan membangun pelabuhan perikanan. 4) Strategi WT dengan opsi strategi: membuat aturan terkait bobot gurita dan pengawasan daerah penangkapan ikan.

Abstract:

As per the FAO data, octopus identification is very limited in the species level at world fishery and also they are cryptic nature. On the other hand, Indonesia is one of the top ten highest octopus exporters. This study therefore aimed to determine the species of octopus based on phylogenetic analysis of mt-DNA COI. Octopuses were collected from nine different locations throughout Indonesia, i.e., Anambas, Bangka-Belitung, Cirebon, Karimunjawa, Tuban, Lombok, Buton, Wakatobi and Jayapura. Samples were mostly in the form of tentacles that were directly collected from fishermen. After being preserved in 96% ethanol, the sample was extracted in 10% chelexÒ, PCR amplification using Folmer’s primer then was further analysed by sequencing in Sanger methods. Of the 24 samples sequenced, the results recognized four species Octopodidae belongs to the three genera, named Amphioctopus aegina, Hapalochlaena fasciata, Octopus laqueus and Octopus cyanea. Mean pair-wise distances of within-species were ranged from 0 to 5.5 % and between-species was ranged from 12.9 to 15.8 %. This study distinctly confirmed the difference between genus Amphioctopus and Hapalochlaena (15.5 %), as also between O. laqueus and O. cyanea (12.9%) which was previously not completely distinguished. Although performing species identification using DNA sequences for shallow-water benthic octopus species is perhaps considered premature, this study indicated the possible application of COI sequences for species identification, thereby providing a preliminary dataset for future DNA barcoding of octopus, in particular for Indonesia waters.

Secara historis dibeberapa negara telah mengalami penurunan hasil tangkap gurita dalam beberapa tahun. Tujuan dari diadakannya penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat morfometri pada gurita vulgaris (Octopus vulgaris) dari Perairan Desa Popisi, Pulau Banggai Laut, Sulawesi Tengah dengan parameter panjang mantel, panjang lengan, berat, dan jenis kelamin. Sampel ditangkap oleh nelayan dengan alat pancing sederhana pada kedalaman 10-30 m dari perairan Banggai Laut. Gurita dibagi kedalam 4 kategori berdasarkan berat yang digunakan pengepul, yaitu kategori A, B, C, D. Gurita dari Desa Popisi pada bulan Maret 2018 dalam ukuran yang baik untuk di jual dan di ekspor, yaitu 87% gurita hasil tangkapan berukuran besar dengan kategori A, B, dan C. Pulau Banggai Laut menjadi salah satu wilayah yang masih baik dalam penangkapan gurita karena penangkapan yang konservatif. It is important to have basic information about octopus from Indonesian waters to enlarge the management and preservation of Indonesia's marine potential. Historically, in some countries, there has been a decline in octopus capture results in several years. The purpose of this study was to look at morphometry in octopus vulgaris (Octopus vulgaris) from the waters of Popisi Village, Banggai Laut Island, Central Sulawesi with parameters of mantle length, arm length, weight, and sex. The sample was captured by fishermen with a simple fishing rod at a depth of 10-30 m from the waters of Banggai Laut. Octopus is divided into 4 categories based on the weight used by collectors, namely categories A, B, C, D. Octopus from Popisi Village in March 2018 in a good size to sell and export, namely 87% large-sized octopus with categories A, B, and C. Banggai Laut Island is one of the areas that is still good in capturing octopuses due to conservative arrests.

In this study, the ecological and societal impact of the invasive pufferfish Lagocephalus sceleratus on coastal habitats of an area of the eastern Mediterranean Sea (Rhodes Island) was investigated. Seasonal quantitative samplings in two common coastal habitats were used to investigate habitat use of different life-stages. Sandy areas were found to be highly important for the early life stages of L. sceleratus. In contrast, Posidonia oceanica habitats were mainly preferred by larger (> 29 cm) reproductive adults, not exceeding 64 cm. Lagocephalus sceleratus was found to feed on invertebrates and fish while size classification revealed a tendency for a diet shift with increased size. During early life stages, L. sceleratus inhabits sandy bottoms where it feeds on various invertebrates. The predominant molluscan species found in the diet of larger (> 20 cm) L. sceleratus individuals were the economically important Sepia officinalis and Octopus vulgaris. The size at which 50% of individuals reach maturity was estimated to 19 cm. With increased size, habitat shift to seagrass meadows most possibly occurs to meet both the increased demand in prey availability and requirement of appropriate spawning ground. Condition factor of L. sceleratus showed significantly higher values during summer than all other seasons and this was attributed to spawning season and increase in feeding. Societal impacts were alarming due to increased public attention concerning its lethal effects (presence of tetrodotoxin), if consumed. Its high abundance in the coastal fish communities of the studied area combined with ecological and societal impacts, clearly classify L. sceleratus a pest for fisheries and potential threat for biodiversity.

Coral reefs are one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and apart from carrying out important ecologicalfunctions, they have an important socioeconomic role because they are source of income and livelihoods for severalcommunities. Coroa Vermelha, is a district of Santa Cruz Cabrália, State of Bahia, and, together with the northern portionof Porto Seguro, it comprises the Coroa Vermelha APA (Environmental Protection Area). The artisanal fishing of octopusstill plays an important role for the local population, although tourism is a more promising alternative. This study coversthe behaviour of the octopus fishermen from Coroa Vermelha relating to their catch, other elements of the ecosystem, andpossible conservation implications, following a broad ethnoecological approach. Non-structured interviews, followed bysemi-structured and structured interviews, with randomly selected octopus fishermen and with “native specialists”, werecarried out. The semi-structured interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. The technique of direct observation,when fishermen were accompanied during the fishing, was also used. Twenty fishermen were interviewed; eight of whomwere considered “native specialists”. Two techniques of capture were reported, the catching of octopus over the reef andthrough diving, and five sampling points were cited as the most frequently fished by the local octopus fishermen. Amongstthe proposed interactions, that of human/plant interactions was found to be the weakest and that of human/animal thestrongest when fishing for octopus.

Abstract Lakes, rivers and oceans provide unique resources and support fisheries and aquaculture worldwide. The fisheries and aquaculture sector of Kenya contributes approximately 0.8% to the country’s GDP. Marine production is about 9 000 tonnes per year. Marine finfish form the bulk of the marine production, while shellfish (e.g. prawns, lobsters and crabs), molluscs (e.g. octopi and squids) are underexploited. The Fishery sector has the potential of about USD 5 billion for the Blue Economy in Kenya. Crab fishery in Kenya is active in some areas of the south and north coast. The crab resources along the Kenyan waters are diverse and a variety of species are edible. The most commonly fished crab by artisanal fishers is the Mangrove Mud Crab Scylla serrata. Semi-commercial and industrial fishers usually have portunid and other deep sea crabs as by-catch in trawl and longline fisheries, which in many cases are unutilized. Exports of live crabs have increased over the years, with exports mainly to Asian countries. Export of frozen crabs started recently. The need to sustainably utilize lake, river and ocean resources is recognized and important in promoting Blue Economy. Sustainable development of crab fishery provides a potential area for the Blue Economy development in Kenya. Research is essential to crab fishery development.

Abstract:

The goliath grouper Epinephelus itajara is a large sized (> 400 kg) and critically endangered marine fish, which is protected in many countries, including Brazil. Through the application of semi-structured interviews, we investigated the local ecological knowledge of seven fishermen specialist on catching E. itajara from the Babitonga bay, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Local long-line fisheries for E. itajara seemed to be a disappearing tradition in the studied site, with a detailed inherent local ecological knowledge system, which is also being lost. Our study also showed that fishermen engaged in recent fisheries, such as spear-fishing, can also possess a detailed local ecological knowledge system. Through the analysis of fishermen local ecological knowledge, several aspects of E. itajara life history were registered. This species is found in the inner and outer Babitonga bay, from saline waters to areas with a large input of freshwater, and inhabits submerged wooden substrates and artificial reefs such as shipwrecks, mooring pillars and cargo containers. It is known to spawn in December and subsequent summer months in the studied area. Spawning aggregations are usually seen in December (during full moon), being also eventually observed in January and February by our informants. While lobsters, spadefishes and octopuses seem to constitute the most important food items of inner bay E. itajara, outer bay individuals may feed on catfishes, crustaceans and other fish species. The goliath grouper is regarded as pacific and curious fish, but frequently display agonistic behavior in the presence of divers. Based on the perception of well experienced spear fishermen, we hypothesize that E. itajara undertakes seasonal migrations from the inner to the outer bay during summer, and that the studied population is suffering from growth over-fishing. Our data provides a practical evidence of how joining scientific and local ecological knowledge will likely benefit E. itajara local conservation and management practices by adding important new biological data into the decision-making process.

A survey of the ecology of the octopus Eledone cirrhosa in Scottish waters is compiled from structured interviews with fishermen, records of occurrence in traps (for lobster and crab), and a research vessel survey. This species is widespread and common throughout the inshore waters covered by fishing activity (shoreline- 140 m) on bottom types ranging through rock, stones, sand and mud. It is caught in all months of the year but is especially common inshore in the summer (July-September) and further offshore on trawling grounds in October-December. The octopus is a normal and regular predator of large Crustacea (Hotnarus, Nephrops, Cancer) caught in commercial traps but gut contents yield little identifiable dietary remains.

The western part of North Minahasa waters is mainly covers by coral reef with relatively large potential of fishery resources including Octopus. Fishermen of Budo village catches the Octopus by fishing gear known as sihoru or gara – gara boboca in local name with classified as trowling. The goals of this study are to analyze the influence of using different colors of typical bait released to fishing catch and to identity the catches species. Experimental method and T-Test wore using to analyze the data. The result indicated that the color differences not influence to the number of catches, which the analysis probability of brown and black colors is 0.6041, the brown and red is 0.4762, the black and red is 0.8455 which all of these numbers or higher than α0.05 = 2.2281. Based on this identification, Octopus cyanea is mainly catches.ABSTRAK Perairan Minahasa Utara bagian Barat pada umumnya merupakan hamparan batu karang yang memiliki potensi sumber daya perikanan yang relatif melimpah salah satunya adalah gurita (Octopus). Dalam memanfaatkan sumber daya ini masyarakat nelayan Desa Budo menangkap gurita menggunakan alat tangkap pancing yang disebut sihoru atau gara–gara boboca, alat tangkap ini adalah alat tangkap pancing jenis tonda. Tujuan dalam penelitian ini adalah menganalisis pengaruh penggunaan warna umpan terhadap jumlah hasil Tangkapan dan mengetahui spesies octopus hasil tangkapan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitan adalah eksperimental dan dianalisis menggunakan metode statistik Uji T. Dari penelitian ini diperoleh hasil nilai analisis P coklat hitam dan sebesar 0.6041, coklat dan merah sebesar 0.4762, hitam dan merah sebesar 0.8455 yang semua nilainya berada diatas α0.05 = 2.2281 dan dapat disimpulkan bahwa perlakuan warna umpan tidak berpengaruh terhadap hasil tangkapan. Berdasarkan hasil identifikasi gurita yang tertangkap adalah Octopus cyanea.

Hikmet Afif Mapolar (1919–1989) was a Turkish Cypriot writer and journalist who contributed immensely to the development of Turkish-language prose, journalism, and the press in Cyprus. Tied to his native country all his life, and especially to his place of birth (the port city of Kyrenia on the Mediterranean Sea), he set most of his stories in coastal towns in the vicinity of Kyrenia, and his characters are inhabitants of this region: villagers and fishermen. This article discusses a short story by Mapolar, Ahtapot Avı [The Octopus Hunt], published in 1943, i.e., during the colonial period. The realism of the descriptions, which is typical of this writer, combined with the fast-paced and engrossing storytelling bring to mind scenes from a movie drama where the sea plays the lead role. Many plot elements in The Octopus Hunt evoke associations with Hemingway’s short story, The Old Man and the Sea, which leads me to formulate a universal truth that sea people have similar desires and a similar fate no matter where they live, and that “their” sea is not a peripheral place, but a central one. For the inhabitants of the coastal region, the sea is the center of their world, the center of life, the meaning of life, and the determinant of fate.
