Abstract:
A bookmaker makes a book on a horse race: he offers odds against the various horses winning the race, and gamblers accept bets at those odds when they find the odds attractive. The book at a particular time consists of the bookmaker's winnings according to the different outcomes of the race if the race were run at that time. We consider strategies the bookmaker might adopt when deciding how to alter his quoted odds as bets accumulate. The bookmaker is assumed to behave conservatively in the sense that he tries to minimise his expected maximum loss over all possible outcomes of the race.

Abstract:
The paper addresses an apparent paradox observed in betting on football scores, drawing on 20-year data from the English 2nd tier division (Championship). While accumulator bets have a lower Net Expected Value than single bets, ‘cross double’ bets on the scores, placed over successive playing rounds, produce distinctly better results and indeed a positive return overall. It is argued that this effect rests on the essential stability of the score frequencies across playing seasons and on the bookmakers’ failure, in setting the odds, to allow for occasional and temporary deviations from long run average frequencies. A betting strategy based on overdue scores occurring with compensating frequencies, and possibly clustered together, can then produce positive returns. Neglect of overdue scores can be expressed formally as a bias augmenting the probability of these and turning the odds in the bettor’s favour. It is shown that, while normally the bettor’s disadvantage is compounded in multiple bets, a compounded advantage results once the odds become better than fair. The paper also discusses certain quasi binomial characteristics of the betting involved and explores possible ways of hedging such bets ‘in running’.

Abstract:
The crowning of Leicester City FC as English Premier League champions in 2016 is arguably the biggest upset in the history of professional sports. The pre-season odds posted for LCFC to win the EPL were 5,000:1, worse than finding Elvis alive. In our model, they win just once per 70,000 simulations; thus, bettors could expect a return of just 0.071 of the stake when betting on Leicester City. This is similar to the expected return of betting on all of the long-shots in our simulations; however, the expected value of bets on favorites averages 0.864. We find that the betting market is segmented for favorites and long-shots; while the market for favorites resembles a normal betting market, the market for long-shots is like a lottery.

Abstract:
The favorite-longshot bias has been referred to as the most longstanding empirical regularity in literature concerning decision-making under uncertainty, as well as a central theme of the literature on betting. However, it has defied authoritative explanation to date. Several attempts have been offered to explain the bias. They can be divided to two main categories: demand-oriented and supply-oriented explanations. This article argues in favour of supply-side explanations. The study is based on comparison of bookmaker odds to betting exchange odds in three betting markets. The data obtained illustrate that the disparity between bookmaker odds and betting exchange prices increases rapidly as the implied probability of the event decreases. This provides an explanation of the favorite-longshot bias which is consistent with earlier empirical research, showing declining expected returns on bets as odds increase. In addition, this explanation is consistent with the evidence concerning the volume of bets actually received by bookmakers.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article explores Allied intelligence officers’ encounters with and interrogations of German civilians from autumn 1944 onwards, psychological warfare operations directed at civilians, and their wider ramifications. Focusing especially on the officers serving with the Psychological Warfare Division (PWD), I will demonstrate that field intelligence officers’ stance towards German civilians was fluid and often ambiguous, with the encounter causing considerable distress to some of them. Their reports and correspondence further suggest that in this period, Germans readily professed knowledge of atrocities. But contrary to intelligence officers’ expectations, they failed to accept any guilt or responsibility. Finally, I will argue that the very foundations and techniques of Western Allied psychological warfare may have reinforced and legitimised justification strategies that separated between “real” Nazis and everyone else. This was at odds with one of the central aims of Military Government, i.e. to inculcate a sense of culpability in Germans.

Abstract:
We evaluate the impact of timing on decision outcomes when both the timing and the relevant decision are chosen under uncertainty. Sports betting provides the testing ground, as we exploit an original dataset containing more than one million online bets on games of the Italian Major Soccer League. We find that individuals perform systematically better when they place their bets farther away from the game day. The better performance of early bettors holds controlling for (time-invariant) unobservable ability, learning during the season, and timing of the odds. We attribute this result to the increase of noisy information on game day, which hampers the capacity of late (non-professional) bettors to use very simple prediction methods, such as team rankings or last game results. We also find that more successful bettors tend to bet in advance, focus on a smaller set of events, and prefer games associated with smaller betting odds.

Abstract:
This research is motivated by a number of open questions in the behavioural finance literature. Firstly, if investors do not learn in a rational Bayesian manner but rather suffer from biases set out in the naïve reinforcement hypothesis, rationality assumptions in individual preference models may not hold. I use a unique longitudinal dataset comprising in excess of 1.5 million fixed-odds financial bets, where bettors perform identical, consecutive decisions which mimic financial choices made in a laboratory, but the use of their own funds departs from the artificiality of an experiment. I present evidence of unwarranted overconfidence generated by reinforcement learning in both real and simulated markets. Secondly, Kahneman and Tversky (1979) state that losses loom larger than gains. I examine whether the disposition to avoid losses is driving behaviour in the losing domain in the dataset and conclude that there is little evidence of loss aversion. I differentiate between betting on Financial Markets, in which agents may perceive an internal locus of control, and betting on the simulated market, where results are uncorrelated and in which the emotions of regret and disappointment may not loom as large. Finally, Odean (1998) provides evidence that investors readily realise paper gains by selling their winning stocks, yet hold on to their losing stocks too long. This loss aversion is consistent with Kahneman and Tversky (1979) prospect theory, however, how long would the investor hold on to a stock that is losing value on a day-to-day basis? Conversely, would an investor rush to sell a stock that has yielded positive returns in each month during the past year? I test the interaction between learning and loss aversion in a financial betting experiment in which two treatment groups are subjected to consecutive gains or losses.

Narro, Joaquin Garces. "Fermi superallowed β+- decays in heavy odd-odd, N = Z nuclei." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2000. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/842872/.

Full text
Abstract:
The beta+-decay half-lives of the neutron-deficient, odd-odd, N = Z nuclei, 74Rb, 78Y, 82NB and 86Tc were measured following the fragmentation of a primary 92Mo beam at an energy of 60 MeV per nucleon at the GANIL laboratory, France. They were measured by correlating beta+-decays with the implantation of unambiguously identified fragments. The deduced log10 ft1/2-values are consistent with 0+→ 0+, Fermi superallowed transitions, which together with the measured beta+-detection efficiencies suggest T = 1, 1pi- 0+ ground states for these odd-odd, N = Z nuclei. These data represent the heaviest N = Z systems for which Fermi superallowed decays have been established. The results suggest that these nuclei can be used to extend the mass range used to test the Conserved Vector Current hypothesis of the standard model. In addition, an experiment using the reaction 58Ni + 28Si at a beam energy of 200 MeV was performed at the Laboratorio Nationale di Legnaro, Italy, using the EUROBALL spectrometer together with a charged particle silicon detector ball and an array of liquid scintillator neutron detectors. The measured values of the energies of the evaporated, charged-particles and those of the gamma-ray multiplicity (deduced using the liquid scintillator detectors), are used to implement a novel technique for the channel selection of weakly populated evaporation channels.

This study intends to verify the presence of earnings management (EM) in the periods surrounding CEO changes in Brazil. Earnings management can be defined as the use of managerial discretion when making accounting choices, within the limits of the standards, with the intention of producing a skewed view of the entity???s earnings to obtain gains. The work is classified as an explanatory research, with a quantitative and empirical approach, and uses the financial results of 227 companies listed on the BM&FBOVESPA between 2010 and 2016. For the CEO who is leaving the company, the reasons for undertaking earnings management include, among others, the possible need to hide a poor performance, obtain financial advantages, and build a successful professional image. In the case of the CEO who enters the company, the EM can be used to establish a depressed earnings base in the year of his/her entry, improving the conditions to present an evolution of earnings in later years. In order to verify these hypotheses, two EM detection models based on accruals were used, the modified Jones and the modified Jones with ROA. The results of the study demonstrate that, although there is no evidence that the average EM level is influenced by the CEO being in his/her last year in office, there was a statistically significant presence of earnings management in the first year of the incoming CEO with the intention of reducing reported profits, confirming the hypothesis of creating a depressed comparison basis so that the earnings of subsequent years are analyzed more favorably.

Abstract:
The aim of this master thesis is to verify possibility to use Poisson distribution for predicting soccer matches. At first for analysis is applied the original model from English statisticians Mark J. Dixon and Stuart G. Coles from 1997. Thereafter the model is extended in the thesis. All models are based on the maximum likelihood method. Chosen league for deducing conclusions is the first English league - Premier League. The matches are played in the period from season 2004/2005 to half of season 2015/2016. For identification of models performance are used the most market odds from American bookmaker Pinnacle. In the theoretical part are described models and statistical methods that are used in the practical part. In the practical part are realized calculations. Counted performance of models is based on profit from market odds. In the period ex-post are calculated optimum model parameters that are used in the ex-ante period, where is calculated performance of the model. The thesis answers question: Are these models gaining from public database effective in modern age?

Abstract:
Recent findings have shown an inverse association between the circulating levels of pentadecanoic acid (C15:0) and heptadecanoic acid (C17:0) with the risk of pathological development in type 2 diabetes, cardio vascular disease and neurological disorders. From previously published research, it has been said that both these odd chain fatty acids are biomarkers of their dietary intake and are significantly correlated to dietary ruminant fat intake. However, there are profound studies that show the contrary where they do not display this biomarker correlation. Additionally, several astute studies have suggested or shown odd chain fatty acid endogenous biosynthesis, most often suggested via alpha oxidation; the cleavage of a single carbon unit from a fatty acid chain within the peroxisomes. To better understand the correlations and interactions between these two fatty acids with pathological development, the origin of these odd chain fatty acids needed to be determined, along with confirming their association with the disease aetiology. To minimise animal & human experimentation we made use of existing sample sets made available through institutional collaborations, which produced both animal and human interventional study samples suitable for odd chain fatty acid investigations. These sample collaborations allowed us to comprehensively investigate all plausible contributory sources of these odd chain fatty acids; including from the intestinal microbiota, from dietary contributions, and derived from novel endogenous biosynthesis. The investigations included two intestinal germ-free studies, two ruminant fat diet studies, two dietary fat studies and an ethanol intake study. Endogenous biosynthesis was assessed through: a stearic acid infusion, phytol supplementation, and an Hacl1 knockout mouse model. A human dietary intervention study was used to translate the results. Finally, a study comparing circulating baseline C15:0 and C17:0 levels with the development of glucose intolerance. We found that the circulating C15:0 and C17:0 levels were not significantly influenced by the presence or absence of intestinal microbiota. The circulating C15:0 levels were significantly and linearly increased when the C15:0 dietary composition increased; however, there was no significant correlation in the circulating C17:0 levels with intake. Circulating levels of C15:0 were affected by the dietary composition and factors affecting the dietary intake, e.g. total fat intake and ethanol, whereas circulating C17:0 levels were found to be independent of these variables. In our studies, the circulating C15:0 levels were not significantly affected by any expected variations in alpha oxidation caused by pathway substrate inhibition or gene knockout. However, C17:0 was significantly related, demonstrating it is substantially endogenously biosynthesised. Furthermore, we found that the circulating C15:0 levels, when independent of any dietary variations, did not correlate with the progression of glucose intolerance when induced, but the circulating C17:0 levels did significantly relate and linearly correlated with the development of glucose intolerance. To summarise, the circulating C15:0 and C17:0 levels were independently derived; the C15:0 levels substantially correlated with its dietary intake, whilst the C17:0 levels proved to be separately derived from its endogenous biosynthesis via alpha oxidation of stearic acid. C15:0 was found to be minimally endogenously biosynthesised via a single cycle of beta oxidation of C17:0 in the peroxisomes, however, this did not significantly contribute to the circulating levels of C15:0. Additionally, only the baseline levels of C17:0 significantly correlated with the development of glucose intolerance. These findings highlight the considerable differences between both of these odd chain fatty acids that were once thought to be homogeneous and similarly derived. On the contrary, they display profound dietary, metabolic, and pathological differences.

The thesis is concerned with an issue of operation of lotteries from the perspec- tive of financial law in the Czech Republic. The aim is to provide an analysis of current legislation and to put forward adequate solutions de lege ferenda. Apart from an introductory chapter and a conclusion, the thesis consists of five chapters. The first one describes the term "betting games" and distinguishes it from the terms "games" (in general) and "lotteries and other like games". The first chapter is also devoted to "game law" meaning a comprehensive set of legal provisions related to the issue. The second chapter sets the betting games into the scope of private law. It focus- es on particular eras of the civil legislation in historical context of the current Czech Republic, from 1811 to 2013. That part of the thesis looks at the current civil legisla- tion, which is stated in the act No. 89/2012 Coll., the Civil Code, and which came into force as of January 1, 2014. Next chapter critically evaluates a legal regulation of operation of betting games, which is grounded in public law. That legislation provides regulatory bases of running objective business. The legislation is mainly made by the act No. 202/1990 Coll., on lotteries and other like games, as amended. The act infringes the European law. Nev-...

Abstract:
There is no doubt that the earth continues to be struck by objects from space. Most of the impactors are very tiny, such as those that produce common meteor trails, and major collisions no longer happen very often. But if a large object, a half kilometer across say, were to strike our planet, the consequences would be devastating. In 1989 an asteroid large enough to bring civilization to the brink of total destruction missed earth by 6 hours and this close encounter in itself should be enough to give us food for thought. There will be other close shaves in the years to come, but no one can predict just when or how close. Only time will tell. Fortunately there are several dedicated groups of astronomers around the world searching for near-earth asteroids (NEAs) in order to catalog their existence and figure orbits lest any should be on a collision course. As a result of their efforts, crucial data are being obtained that will allow the probability of impact to be more accurately estimated, even if only in a statistical sense. The best anyone can do, or will ever be able to do, is to offer odds on the chance of collisions. Odds on comet impact, in the form of estimates of the period between such events, have been published for two centuries. Each generation no doubt felt that the latest estimates were superior to those that went before. For example, in 1861 James Watson, in A Popular Treatise on Comets, said that “it has been found by actual calculation, from the theory of probabilities, that if the nucleus of a comet having a diameter equal to only one fourth part of that of the earth...the probability of receiving a shock from it, is only one in two hundred and eighty-one millions.” This estimate was also quoted by Thomas Dick in 1840 who, in turn, credited it to Francois Arago for calculating this around 1800.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the three long literary epistles that are Horace’s last works, addressed, respectively, to Augustus, to Julius Florus, and to the members of the Piso family (which, following Quintilian, has come to be known, somewhat misleadingly, as the Ars Poetica). These verse letters are discussed with a view to showing that several of Horace’s general statements about poetry constitute an implicit commentary on his own lyric compositions, as regards the importance of craft, the value of the poet to Roman society, and the ability of the best poetry to be useful as well as pleasurable.

Abstract:
This chapter applies Benford's law to study how players choose numbers in fixed-odds number lottery games. Empirical data suggests that not all players choose numbers with equal probability in lottery games. Some of them tend to bet on (smaller) numbers that are closely related to events around them (e.g., birthdays, anniversaries, addresses, etc.). In a fixed-odds lottery game, this small-number phenomenon imposes a serious risk on the game operator of a big payout if a very popular number is chosen as the winning number. The chapter quantifies this phenomenon and develops a choice model incorporating a modified Benford's law for lottery players to capture the magnitude of the small-number phenomenon observed in the empirical data.

The Civil War was neither won nor lost west of the Mississippi River. The immense geographical extent of the region made military success and territorial conquest essentially illusory. The trans-Mississippi was at the end of a long and tenuous line of supply, with the armies in the East taking the most and best of what limited matériel was available to the Confederacy. As Edmund Kirby Smith complained to Arkansas senator Robert Ward Johnson in January 1864, “The means and resources of the Government will be centered with the Armies of Tennessee and Virginia. We here will be left to struggle against immense odds, as best we may, with feeble resources at our command.”...

Abstract:
From the early nineteenth century until the Civil War, Americans were at odds over a fundamental concept: what does it mean to be an American citizen? Political change, sectional tensions, the development of abolitionism and reform movements and more, all forced Americans to confront the notion that while the relationship between themselves and the states of their birth were well-established, the connection between citizens and the nation-state was hazy at best. This chapter surveys the period between the 1830s and the 1860s and focuses attention on the contradictory ways that Americans defined themselves as American citizens.

Abstract:
The efficient-market hypothesis states that it is impossible to beat the market, as the price reflects all available information. Applied to bookmaker odds for football games, there should not be a systematic way of winning money on the long run. However, we show that by using simple machine learning models we can systematically outperform the markets belief manifested through the bookmakers odds. The effect of this inefficiency is diminishing over time, which indicates that the knowledge that has been derived from and the pure amount of the data is also reflected in the odds in recent times. We give some insights how this effect differs across major football leagues in Europe, which algorithms are performing best and statistics on the ROI using machine learning in football betting. Additionally, we share how the simulation study has been designed in more detail.

Abstract:
It is agreed that the main factors in sustainability are the environment, economy and the society; however, it is still largely undecided how organizations can best transform themselves to incorporate consideration of these factors. Successful integration of sustainability into the business plan will require an organization-wide effort. A proven technique in organizations for creating systemic change is Organization Development (OD). Unfortunately, OD has not yet been extended to include the key areas of sustainability and organized within a practical framework for implementation. This paper extends OD for Sustainability (ODFS), creating a conceptual model called here “the Sustainable House.” The conceptual model clarifies sustainable organizational characteristics and interdisciplinary interactions. The PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) approach is introduced as a framework for implementing ODFS. It is demonstrated that ODFS requires a substantial support structure and a dynamic learning process for accumulating knowledge. This article identifies key areas of ODFS and provides a conceptual model and a framework for operationalizing sustainability into organizations. Various sustainable tools, methodologies, interacting concepts and gaps in ODFS are also included.

Abstract:
Current and future designs for advanced turbine systems, such as Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC), advanced Natural Gas Combined Cycle (NGCC), and the emerging supercritical CO2 (SCO2) systems require increasing turbine inlet temperature (TIT), which is well beyond the substrate melting temperature. The well-known approach is coating the turbine blade with thermal barrier coatings (TBC) combined with internal cooling channel in the substrate. However, due to thermally grown oxide (TGO) and thermal expansion mismatch stresses, TBC spallation failure is a major concern. Furthermore, neither the ceramic coating layer nor the metallic bond coat in current TBC system can provide structural support to house the internal cooling channels. In this research, a method to fabricate high temperature protective structural coating on top of critical gas turbine components by additive manufacturing (AM) technique using oxide dispersion strengthening (ODS) metal powder is presented. A novel combined mechanochemical bonding (MCB) plus ball milling process is utilized to produce near spherical and uniformly alloyed ODS powders. AM-processed ODS coating by direct energy deposition (DED) method on MAR-247 substrate, with laser powers from 100W to 200W were carried out. The ODS coated samples were then subjected to thermal cyclic loadings for over 2200 cycles. For comparison, in our earlier studies, under the same cyclic testing condition, typical tested TBC coupons showed spallation failure after ∼400 cycles. Correlation of the measured ODS coating Young’s modulus using a unique non-destructive micro-indentation testing method with evolution of the ODS microstructures are studied to identify optimum AM processing parameters for best performance of the ODS samples. In particular, stability of secondary γ′ phase in the ODS coating after thermal cycles is analyzed. Test results revealed a thin steady durable alpha alumina oxide layer on the best performance ODS samples. After 2,200 thermal cycles, strong bonding at ODS/substrate interface is also maintained for most of the ODS coated samples. Test results also showed stable substrate microstructure due to the protective ODS coating even after 2,200 thermal cycles. These preliminary test results showed strong potential for applications of AM-assisted ODS coating on advanced gas turbine components.

Abstract:
Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) alloys are a long established class of materials manufactured using powder metallurgy techniques. These alloys can offer exceptional high temperature strength and resistance to radiation damage, thus are envisioned to be used in a number of future nuclear and fossil energy power applications. However, due to the manufacturing steps involved, the overall cost to build components with these materials can be high. This paper presents work conducted to assess the feasibility of applying Selective Laser Melting (SLM) techniques to either coat or direct build on substrates with Fe-based Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) alloys. SLM is a rapid prototyping technique which can be used to manufacture near net-shape solid components from layered metallic powder beds. Two different geometries were of interest in this study — a simple button configuration with a nickel-base superalloy (IN939) substrate and a more complex hexagonal shaped wall with a mild steel substrate. Powders of PM2000 (a FeCrAl based ODS alloy) were deposited in both cases. Heat treatments were subsequently conducted on these structures to investigate effects of temperature on the bond characteristics and secondary recrystallisation. Electron microscopy examination revealed significant amounts of diffusion between the nickel and the ODS powders which enhances the bond strength. The studies have revealed the existence of a strong bond between the substrate and the interface even after prolonged exposure at elevated temperatures.

Gad-Briggs, Arnold, and Pericles Pilidis. "Analyses of Off-Design Point Performances of Simple and Intercooled Brayton Helium Recuperated Gas Turbine Cycles for Generation IV Nuclear Power Plants." In 2017 25th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone25-67714.

Abstract:
The Design Point (DP) performance of a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is fairly straightforward to establish for a given mass flow rate, turbomachinery compressor Pressure Ratio (PR) and reactor Core Outlet Temperature (COT). The plant components are optimum for that point but this is no longer the case if the plant’s operating conditions are changed for part-load performance. Data from tests or previous operating experiences are useful in determining typical part load performance of components based on characteristic maps. However, when individual components are linked in a plant, the range of operating points for part load performances are severely reduced. The main objective of this study is to derive Off-Design Points (ODPs) for the Simple Cycle Recuperated (SCR) and Intercooled Cycle Recuperated (ICR) when considering a temperature range of −35 to 50°C and COTs between 750 to 1000°C, using a modelling & performance simulation tool designed specifically for this study, which calculates the best operational equilibrium ODPs that are critical to the economics of the NPP. Results show that the recuperator High-Pressure (HP) side and reactor pressure losses alter the actual operating parameters (mass flow rate and compressor PR). The SCR yielded a drop in plant cycle efficiency of 1% for a 4% pressure loss in comparison to the ICR (5%) for the same amount of recuperator HP losses. Other parameters such as the precooler and recuperator Low-Pressure (LP) losses still retain the same operating inlet PRs and mass flow rates regardless of the magnitude of the losses. In the absence of characteristic maps in the public domain, the ODPs have been used to produce characteristic trend maps for first order ODP calculations. The analyses intend to aid the development of cycles for Generation IV NPPs specifically Gas Cooled Fast Reactors (GFRs) and Very High Temperature Reactors (VHTRs), where helium is the coolant.

Abstract:
For the design of turbomachines like compressors, turbines, fans, and centrifugal pumps, more and more use is made of commercially available flow simulation software. To the authors best knowledge, in all cases discretization schemes based on a collocated grid are used. However, using a collocated grid method, the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations can suffer from odd-even decoupling. The adaptations necessary to suppress odd-even decoupling in incompressible flows result in calculations which are either less accurate or more time-consuming, especially for unsteady flows. In this paper we apply an alternative method based on a staggered-grid approach. The method is ideally suited for calculating unsteady incompressible flow on highly non-uniform block-structured grids. The unsteady flow in a radial pump with a vaned diffuser is calculated in 2D and compared with results obtained with a commercially available code. The time-dependent velocity and pressure fields are validated with experimental results available in literature.

Full text
Abstract:
Using unique longitudinal quantitative and qualitative data, we examine the role that low learning plays in driving dropout in Ethiopia, India, Peru, and Vietnam. Regression analysis using IRT-linked test scores and data on schooling attainment and dropout shows a strong, significant association with one standard deviation higher test scores associated with 50 percent lower odds of dropping out between the ages of 8 and 12, and a similar association between the ages of 12 and 15. Qualitative analysis indicates a direct relationship between low learning and dropout, with children and parents choosing to discontinue school when they realize how little is being learned. Qualitative findings also show that low learning interacts with and exacerbates more proximate causes of dropout, with low learning often contributing to choices of early marriage (for girls) and of leaving school to work (for both genders), with families making practical decisions about which options will best provide for children in the long run. Finally, learning, work, and poverty often interact, as the need to work to help provide for the household reduces the opportunities to learn, and low learning tilts the opportunity cost of time in favor of working. These findings suggest that low learning may play a larger role in dropout decisions, by underlying and interacting with other causes, than has been typically recognized.
