Abstract:
‘Odds, evens, and shells’ considers the fundamental property laws governing nuclear structure. It explains element stability and abundance, as well as the quantum rules, magic numbers, shells, and binding energy that explain atomic and element structure. An effective guide to stability, and the pattern of radioactive decays, is given by the semi-empirical mass formula. As nature seeks stability by minimising energy, a nucleus seeks to lower the total mass or increase the binding energy by emitting an alpha particle cluster, by beta decay, or by splitting in two, as in uranium fission. Alpha decay and technetium, the lightest element that is totally radioactive, and thus without any stable isotopes, are also described.

Tarrant, Richard. Horace's Odes. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195156751.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Horace’s body of lyric poetry, the Odes, is one of the greatest achievements of Latin literature and a foundational text for the Western poetic tradition. These 103 exquisitely crafted poems speak in a distinctive voice—usually detached, often ironic, always humane—reflecting on the changing Roman world that Horace lived in and also on more universal themes of friendship, love, and mortality. This book introduces readers to the Odes by situating them in the context of Horace’s career as a poet and by defining their relationship to earlier literature, Greek and Roman. Several poems have been freshly translated by the author; others appear in versions by Horace’s best modern translators. A number of poems are analyzed in detail, illustrating Horace’s range of subject matter and his characteristic techniques of form and structure. A substantial final chapter traces the reception of the Odes from Horace’s own time to the present. Readers of this book will gain an appreciation for the artistry of one of the finest lyric poets of all time.

Scully, Stephen. Aesthetic and Political Concerns in Dryden’s Æneis. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198810810.003.0019.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter is devoted to what is perhaps the most influential translation of the Aeneid into English. Scully proposes that Dryden viewed Virgil’s ‘quiet and sedate’ style as ideally suited both to the political necessities of Augustan Rome and to post-Glorious Revolution England. Although by his own testimony Dryden felt that his poetic temperament was at odds with Virgil’s and he claimed that he translated Homer and Lucretius more happily, he restrained his own poetic sensibilities, and indeed Virgil’s lexical range and multifaceted fabric, when giving England the ancient poem that he felt best suited the needs of his own time.

Besson, Samantha. Community Interests in International Law. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198825210.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter explores the nature and scope of community interests in international law and assesses how they should best be identified. It rejects the prevalent assumption that states act selfishly and hence pursue interests that are at odds with community interests. The chapter argues that states often do and should pursue both individual interests and collective ones, whether domestic or global. It submits that invoking collective interests should be done with caution, and should always be justified: The priority of community interests over other values and interests, including states’ interests, in the legitimation of international law cannot simply be taken for granted.

Full text
Abstract:
Conventional tests and testing practices are at odds with professional “best practice” standards in early childhood intervention. Moreover, conventional tests have been neither developed for nor field-validated on young children with disabilities for early intervention purposes. Dramatic changes are emerging in the assessment of young children, particularly those with developmental delays/disabilities. Interdisciplinary professionals must know and adhere to the professional practice standards for assessment in early childhood intervention. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) standards promote authentic assessment as the evidence-based alternative for young children to prevent the misrepresentation of young children with disabilities—the mismeasure of young children (Bagnato, Neisworth & Pretti-Frontczak, 2010).

Abstract:
Schizophrenia and related disorders are common, affecting about 1 in 100 people, and typically begin in late adolescence and early adulthood, when people are in the prime of their lives. They are also major causes of disease burden globally and are amongst the top causes of disability in working-age adults in the world. Carers are significantly affected by the burden of these disorders, which are a leading cause of healthcare costs. Schizophrenia and related disorders are also major causes of premature mortality due to suicide and elevated rates of comorbid conditions, particularly cardiometabolic disorders. It is clear that the stakes are high, and this book aims to help the clinician give their patients the best odds of getting better.

Zola, Émile. Doctor Pascal. Edited by Brian Nelson. Translated by Julie Rose. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780198746164.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
‘There's something of everything there, the best and the worst, the vulgar and the sublime, flowers, muck, tears, laughter, the river of life itself’ Pascal Rougon has served as a doctor in the rural French town of Plassans for thirty years. He lives a quiet life with his faithful servant Martine and young niece Clotilde. Pascal is a man of science, striving to find the ultimate cure for all diseases. This puts him at odds with his niece, who is horrified by his denial of religious faith. Clotilde also distrusts Pascal's lifelong ambition to create a family tree on scientific principles, based upon his theories of heredity. Tensions in the household are fuelled by Pascal's scheming mother, Félicité, as the final episode in the great Rougon-Macquart saga plays out. Dr Pascal is the passionate conclusion to Zola's twenty-novel sequence, and the most eloquent expression of the ideas on heredity and human progress that have underpinned it. Human relations are at its heart, as Pascal and Clotilde are bound ever closer by ties of family and love.

Abstract:
This chapter describes how the UPA Government had reached the terminal stage when Pallam Raju assumed charge as Minister, MHRD, and how in spite of heavy odds made the best of a bad job, and attempted to salvage the failed reform agenda of Sibal as much as he could by quietly getting UGC to issue regulations. It outlines the report of the Madhava Menon Committee on Open and Distance Education Learning (ODC), and the action taken on that report. It also describes the crisis created by the Supreme Court judgment in Association of Management of Private Colleges (April 2013) virtually divesting the AICTE of power to regulate tertiary technical education. It describes the historic importance of the launch of the RMSA and RUSA, and emphasizes the imperative of the Central Government played a directional role and extending financial support for meet in transcendent national challenges such as improving quality and learning achievement at all areas and stages of education, universalizing secondary education, development of skills and competencies of all types, and rejuvenating the moribund state universities.

Tyler, Amanda L. World War II. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199856664.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
The bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, ushered the United States into World War II. Within hours, and suspension and martial law came to rule the Hawaiian Territory. On the mainland, the military imposed curfews, designated huge portions of the western United States to be military areas of exclusion, and ultimately created “relocation centers” across the west to detain over 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry, including over 70,000 citizens. As this chapter explores, in the face of serious constitutional questions about the propriety of martial law, internment of citizens, and military trials of civilians, constitutional considerations generally gave way to war hysteria. But, as many key government actors recognized at the time, the detention of Japanese American citizens violated the Suspension Clause, standing as it did at odds with the entire history of the Clause. As challenges to the relevant military policies spilled over into the courts, the institution arguably best situated to identify and highlight their constitutional infirmities—the Supreme Court—never did so, leaving this episode standing as both a dangerous and deeply problematic precedent in American constitutional history.

Bowen, A. J. Plutarch: The Malice of Herodotos. Liverpool University Press, 1992. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9780856685682.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Malice of Herodotus can perhaps best be described as the world's earliest known book review. But it is much more than that, for in the course of 'correcting' with considerable vituperation what he saw as Herodotus' anti-Greek bias, Plutarch tells us much about his own attitude to writing history. So that together with Lucian's How to Write History, it forms a basic text for the study of Greek historiography. It is also perhaps the most revealing example of Plutarch's prose style with its rhetorical variety and energy and odd mixture of good and bad argument. But in citing lost works, Plutarch has preserved valuable fragments which don't exist elsewhere and need to be assessed by all students of the Persian Wars. The book presents Greek text with translation, introduction and commentary.

Langland-Hassan, Peter. Explaining Imagination. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198815068.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Imagination will remain a mystery—we will not be able to explain imagination—until we can break it into simpler parts that are more easily understood. Explaining Imagination is a guidebook for doing just that, where the simpler parts are other familiar mental states like beliefs, desires, judgments, decisions, and intentions. In different combinations and contexts, these states constitute cases of imagining. This reductive approach to imagination is at direct odds with the current orthodoxy, which sees imagination as an irreducible, sui generis mental state or process—one that influences our judgments, beliefs, desires, and so on, without being constituted by them. Explaining Imagination looks closely at the main contexts where imagination is thought to be at work and argues that, in each case, the capacity is best explained by appeal to a person’s beliefs, judgments, desires, intentions, or decisions. The proper conclusion is not that there are no imaginings after all, but that these other states simply constitute the relevant cases of imagining. Contexts explored in depth include: hypothetical and counterfactual reasoning, engaging in pretense, appreciating fictions, and generating creative works. The special role of mental imagery within states like beliefs, desires, and judgments is explained in a way that is compatible with reducing imagination to more basic folk psychological states. A significant upshot is that, in order to create an artificial mind with an imagination, we need only give it these more ordinary mental states.
