Abstract:
Odisha is the soul of incredible India having numerous tourist attractions both natural and manmade. The rich heritage and culture of this land is a unique feature in the global arena. The tourism and hospitality in the state of Odihsa is still in the developing stage. Tourism is a highly labour intensive sector and has the potential to generate high employment growth through a mix of activities. It is the hospitality accommodation industry which binds together a lot of other employment generating sectors through backward and forward linkages and the maximum tourist satisfaction can be achieved by means of competent human resource. However, good human resource practices can be an alternative strategy for the growth of this sector. Hence, accommodation sector being highly shared by private entrepreneurs, low pay, low career opportunity and poor employment conditions, low job security, the labour management is more in this sector. An effort has been made in this paper to bring forward the key factors associated with turnover of employee in the Accommodation Sector of Odisha which had not been explored quite significantly. So, the study has attempted to discover aspects as perceived by the employees and employers as important for them to retain employment in the Accommodation Sector. The study has adopted descriptive survey research design.

Abstract:
In an attempt to reveal the biodiversity status of one of the least studied plant groups of Eastern Ghats, the authors have catalogued the diversity and distribution of bryoflora of Odisha situated in the Northern Eastern Ghats biogeographic regions of India. One hundred fourty nine species of bryophytes including 102 mosses under 23 families, 41 liverworts under 16 families and 6 hornworts under 2 families were reported from Odihsa as a result of 7 years of primary survey (2008-2015) conducted in some selected bryodiversity rich habitats covering 12 districts of Odisha and also from scrutiny of different research publications including research papers, books and research reports. In terms of species richness, the Deomali hills was found to be the most diverse in terms of bryophytes followed by Similipal biosphere reserve, Mahendragiri hills, Niyamgiri hills, Baphlimali hills and Khandadhar hills. Deomali hills also showed highest diversity in endemic mosses. Five mosses such as Fissidens orishae Gangulee, Erpodium mangiferae Müll. Hal., Hyophila comosa Dixon, Stereophyllum confusum Ther., Neckeropsis exserta (Hook. ex Schwagr.) Broth. are found to be endemic to India that occur in Odisha. Aneura pinguis (L.) Dumort., Anoectangium stracheyanum Mitt., Cyathophorella hookeriana (Griff.) M. Fleisch., Cyathophorum adiantum (Griff.) Mitt., Distichophyllum schmidtii Broth., Eurhynchium striatulum (Spruce) Schimp., Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw., Leucobryum juniperoideum (Brid.) Müll. Hal., Lophocolea bidentata (L.) Dumort., Macromitrium sulcatum (Hook.) Brid., Notothylas levieri Schiffner, Pallavicinia lyellii (Hook.) Gray Pellia epiphylla (L.) Corda., Philonotis fontana (Hedw.) Brid., Pogonatum neesii (Müll. Hal.) Dozy., Polytrichum commune Hedw., Polytrichum juniperinum Hedw., Racopilum cuspidigerum (Schwagr.) Angstrom, Racopilum orthocarpum Wilson ex Mitt., Riccia beyrichiana Hampe ex Lehm., Riccia billardieri Mont. & Nees., Spruceanthus semirepandus (Nees) Verd., Thuidium cymbifolium (Müll. Hal.) Paris, Thuidium koelzii H. Rob., Trematodon longicollis Michx., are some of the new distributional record of occurrence for the Eastern Ghats. The present study reveals that Fissidentaceae, Pottiaceae, Bryaceae, Dicranaceae, Aytoniaceae, Marchantiaceae, Funariaceae and Anthocerotaceae are dominant families in the study area. The authors have also identified few forest pockets and critical habitat in the state where bryophyte diversity shall be very rich that needs a detailed survey in near future. The authors discuss the list of bryophytes of the state in a regional context of rarity, as well as address some general subject matters regarding cryptogam conservation and further work needed in the state of Odisha. The study would provide a prelude data for future bryological studies and bryomonitoring in the Eastern Ghats in general and the state of Odisha in particular.

<span>Optical character recognition is one of the emerging research topics in the field of image processing, and it has extensive area of application in pattern recognition. Odia handwritten script is the most research concern area because it has eldest and most likable language in the state of odisha, India. Odia character is a usually handwritten, which was generally occupied by scanner into machine readable form. In this regard several recognition technique have been evolved for variance kind of languages but writing pattern of odia character is just like as curve appearance; Hence it is more difficult for recognition. In this article we have presented the novel approach for Odia character recognition based on the different angle based symmetric axis feature extraction technique which gives high accuracy of recognition pattern. This empirical model generates a unique angle based boundary points on every skeletonised character images. These points are interconnected with each other in order to extract row and column symmetry axis. We extracted feature matrix having mean distance of row, mean angle of row, mean distance of column and mean angle of column from centre of the image to midpoint of the symmetric axis respectively. The system uses a 10 fold validation to the random forest (RF) classifier and SVM for feature matrix. We have considered the standard database on 200 images having each of 47 Odia character and 10 Odia numeric for simulation. As we have noted outcome of simulation of SVM and RF yields 96.3% and 98.2% accuracy rate on NIT Rourkela Odia character database and 88.9% and 93.6% from ISI Kolkata Odia numerical database.</span>

Abstract:
Focused on the socio-economic background of tribal students in the 142 ashram schools of Koraput district in Odisha, this article explores the educational environment and quality of education for tribal children in India. As their educational performance is largely unsatisfactory, the primary causes behind low educational achievements are explored. It is found that the educational processes largely disregard the socio-cultural characteristics and linguistic skills that tribal students bring to the classroom. Specifically, tribal children experience serious language difficulties during the initial years of schooling. The practice of using the dominant state language, Odia, as the sole/dominant medium of instruction in all ashram schools, rather than the children’s mother tongue, appears to leave young learners illiterate in their mother tongue and also fosters low achievement levels in the dominant language.

Abstract:

Abstract:
With a grant from Sida I went to Odisha, to learn about women’s local conditions and try to find out how a building could somehow ameliorate it. Through Architects Sans Frontières I got in touch with Urban and Development Resource Centre, working with upgrading slum areas. They had a budget for a new Community Centre in Nayapalli in Bhubaneswar, but no architect. The Community Centre includes a playschool, a medical centre and community meeting spaces. The building permit for this is currently with the municipality of Bhubaneswar. Today alcoholism is a major problem among the Nayapalli men. Most of them are unemployed and the young men lack alternatives. The women are the main providers for their families, working as house maids. My second proposal is a merely theoretical addition – a Launderette. It will not cure alcoholism, but it will employ a few people and give them possibility to support their families. It will relief some women from time-consuming hand wash and give them time to do something they find more interesting.  And maybe it can give some repute to the area, and make its community proud of it.

Routray, P. "Latrine adoption and use in rural Odisha, India : constraints and challenges." Thesis, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (University of London), 2017. http://researchonline.lshtm.ac.uk/4646132/.

Abstract:
An estimated 2.4 billion people worldwide lack access to improved sanitation. This includes nearly 1 billion people practicing open defecation, of which 60 percent reside in India. Open defecation is especially common among rural populations, and has been linked to health problems like the occurrence of diarrheal disease and malnutrition. Despite decades of efforts by the Indian government to improve sanitation, open defecation continues to be a common practice even in households possessing a functional latrine. The main aims of this research were 1) to understand the reasons for poor adoption (uptake) and use of government subsidized latrines, and 2) to identify the constraints causing latrine non adoption and use. From the constraints identified in the literature review, three constraints were selected for in-depth investigation in this dissertation :1) socio-cultural beliefs and customs around handling adult human faeces, 2) programmatic challenges in mobilising communities for latrine promotion, and 3) household level challenges with sanitation decision making, especially exploring inability of women to take decisions on sanitation installation. The study was conducted in rural areas of Odisha through a mixed methods approach. The research revealed that in this study population, latrine adoption and use by all family members is influenced by socio-cultural and behavioural rituals and restrictions on handling and containing adult human faeces close to the home. In some cases, study subjects expressed a preference for open defecation over latrine use and were able to articulate benefits and advantages. Diverse communities and lack of capacity and skill among implementers negatively impacted the implementation of sanitation campaigns. Power hierarchies, inter-generational and household dynamics prevented female family members from participating in household decisions, including latrine installation decision-making.

Mohanty, Suva Kanta. "Consumer preference and buying behaviour of traditional aromatic rice in Odisha." Thesis, University of Reading, 2015. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.740777.

Abstract:
The taste and preference for food items of urban consumers in India has changed rapidly in the last decade due to increase in income and change in lifestyle. A number of studies have indicated that urban consumers in India are shifting from low quality food grain to high quality food grain and are ready to pay a higher price for better quality of food grain. The state of Odisha, where rice is a major staple food item and where people consider rice as the major source of calorie intake, is the home to a number of traditional aromatic rice varieties (TARV). Past studies have indicated that consumers have a high demand for TARV. This has been investigated to find out consumer preference for attributes, ’willingness to pay’, consumption habits and buying behaviour of TARV. Content analysis and qualitative data analysis were made by the use of N-Vivo to uncover the latent dimensions of consumer preference for attributes, consumption pattern and perception about different characteristics of TARV. A survey questionnaire and choice experiment was developed and administered to the respondents after conducting qualitative analysis. A number ,. of statistical techniques such as mixed logit, ordered probit, multinomial logit and binary logit were employed to analyse the choice experiment and survey data. It was found that consumers’ ’willingness to pay’ for various attributes of TARV vary significantly though their preference for attributes are more or less found to be similar. Urban consumers’ willingness to pay for attributes ’very clean’, ’no chemicals’, ’clean’, ’very soft’, ’white colour’ and ’highly aromatic’ were found to be higher than other attributes. The knowledge of non-use of chemicals was found to have a significant impact upon urban consumers’ perception about different characteristics of TARV and they perceived TARV favourably. Urban consumers’ preference for mixed format of store over organized retail store for the purchase of TARV reveals that the lack of availability of a preferred variety at an organized retail store always compels them to patronize different formats of store though consumers in higher levels of education were found to be attracted towards organized retail store for the purchase of TARV. The increase or decrease in price of TARV was found to have no impact upon the increase or decrease in quantity of consumption. The policy implications of the research findings were discussed and suggestions for future research directions were proposed.

York, Luke. "The impact of climate change on poor dairy producers in Odisha, India." Thesis, University of Reading, 2017. http://centaur.reading.ac.uk/75268/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Indian dairy sector represents 16.7% (44.5 million milking cows) of the world's dairy cattle. Dairying is susceptible to climate change as high temperatures cause heat stress amongst cows. The sector size ensures it is a significant contributor to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and inevitable target for mitigation. Yet, gaps in the knowledge remain regarding contextually relevant adaptation and/or mitigation strategies. The study investigated the impact of climate change on poor smallholder dairy producers and evaluated the role of climate-compatible policy and practice in supporting adaptation and mitigation at a household level. Data was collected from 115 smallholder dairy producers in Puri (n=31) and Khurda (n=84) districts of Odisha, India. Odisha was selected due to the high levels of rural poverty (35.7% of households). The poor are particularly susceptibility to the effects of climate change. Deterministic modelling, systematic policy review, GHG emission inventory, emission mitigation policy comparison and cost-benefit-analysis were employed. Temperature increases (+2C and +4 QC) were found to irrevocably reduce milk yields across all breeds (Jersey crossbred and non-descript indigenous) considered. Adaptation ameliorated losses for little economic gain due to implementation cost. Predicted increases in feed price resulted in lower grade Jersey crossbreeds being the most profitable. Anaerobic digester installation and control of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) were expected to reduce emissions. Calculations indicated digester leakage increased emission intensity by 5.5% whilst FMD control reduced emission intensity by 3.6 -13.1%. However, a reduced sector size is required to reduce total emissions. A reduced sector size will be unpalatable to Indian policymakers due to the socio-cultural importance of cattle. The study concludes that adaptation and mitigation is highly complex due to a range of trade-offs. A restructuring of national policy to consider the trade-offs within a climate change framework is required to prevent climate change impacts from becoming increasingly significant and detrimental.

Anantapatnaikuni, Srikant. "Enhancing Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in the future electricity system of Odisha, India." Thesis, KTH, Energiteknik, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-252340.

Full text
Abstract:
India ratified the Paris Agreement in 2015. The country’s Intended Nationally Determined Contributions includes reduction of emissions intensity by 33-35% in 2030 from the 2005 level and 40% of renewable energy share in the electricity mix by 2030. This study evaluated the future electricity system of Odisha, one of the states in India that is rich in mineral resources. It holds 26% of India’s coal reserves. While the current electricity system of Odisha comprises 95% of coal power generation, the state’s commitments in terms of climate goals and increasing the deployment of renewable energy sources (RES) (i.e., 3 GW by 2022) are aligned with the national goals. To encourage investment in RES and to reduce investment risks, Odisha has also set targets for renewable purchase obligations for utilities and captive consumers. They have to procure 15% of their total electricity consumption from RES (8% solar and 7% non-solar sources) by 2022. The electricity demand in the state is expected to increase due to increased economic growth and the goal to reach 100% energy access (24x7) to households. Besides, there is huge potential for energy savings in the current electricity system through improvement in energy efficiency in the end-use. The increase in electricity demand, high share of fossil in current electricity system, renewable energy target, climate goals and lack of study at the state level are the reasons to assess the future electricity system of Odisha. The study investigated the electricity system in Odisha to meet the increased electricity demand from 2018 until 2050. It estimates the technical, economic and environmental impacts of enhancing energy efficiency and renewable energy on future electricity system of Odisha by using the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning System. Odisha’s future electricity system is assessed in four scenarios i.e. no new policies introduced in the future (BAU), high renewable energy share (HRE), improvement in energy efficiency (IEE) and a combination of renewable energy and energy efficiency (CER). The result shows that the energy requirements in the IEE scenario are 26% lower than in the BAU scenario, and the total costs are lower than HRE scenario by 34% and CER scenario by 10%. The CO2 emissions of the IEE scenario are higher than HRE scenario by 10% and CER by 23%. In the HRE scenario, the total costs are higher than BAU scenario by 8% and CER scenario by 26%. The CO2 emissions are lower than BAU by 45% and IEE by 25%. In the CER scenario, the costs are lower than BAU by 20% and HRE by 26%. The CO2 emissions are lower than BAU by 60%, IEE by 44% and HRE by 26%. The energy savings can be achieved by continuing the existing scheme Ujala for subsidised LEDs, extension of Perform Achieve Trade (reduction of specific energy consumption) scheme to medium and small industries. The renewable targets can be achieved through continuation of RPO which reduces the risk of new investors. Capacity auctions could bring down the solar and wind tariffs. The study demonstrate that the RPO for 2022 cannot be achieved with the target RE capacity. The gap must be fulfilled by either procuring renewable electricity from the regional grid or buy renewable energy certificates from the market.
Indien ratificerade Parisavtalet 2015.
