A avaliação cefalométrica considerou as grandezas: Ângulo Interincisivo, Ângulo 1.NA, Distância l-NA, Trespasse Vertical e Trespasse Horizontal.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to check the biotype facial influence, in occlusion alterations in the anterior open bite, in children from 4 to 6 years old, which has abandoned the dummy and or bottle nursing sucking habit, through Awareness Method the sample was obtained from 33 children, leukodermas of both sexes, who used dummy and or bottle nursing sucking, presenting an anterior open bite. The pacients were submitted to Awareness Method; it weren't used orthodontics appliances. The children were separated in 3 different groups, according to their facial biotype. The morphology alterations caused by this treatment were assessed through cefhalometric analysis, which were taken in the beginning of the treatment and after the sucking removal habito The assessment values were: lnterincisor Angle, 1.NA, l-NA, Overbite and Over jet. The results showed that the cefalometrics values had suffered alterations, significant statistically, caused by the removal habit, with the Awareness Method. However, when comparated the 3 groups, Braquifacial, Mesofacial and Dolicofacial, the alterations weren't significant statistically. Therefore, it was Possible to conclude, that it happened alterations in the position of the incisors, due to the abandon the dummy and or bottle nursing sucking habit, but without biotype facial influence

Abstract: In order contribute to the stablishment of normal standards of maturation among Brazilians and to stablish a possible relationship existent among the chronological, dental and skeletal ages, it was realized a study in children from 6 to 10 years old, from the urban zone of Piracicaba. In possession of radiographies of hand and wrist, that dictated us the osseous ages and of the periapical radiographies of the left lower second premolar, which informed us about the dental stage, we have listed the data. Throughout the results we roud observe that the osseuous maturation of the male children presented a slow evolution and the ages dindn't correspond: the dental development found is dose by the results presented by Nolla (28) and MÉDICI FILHO(23); there isn't an absolute relationship between the osseous and dental age; the girls presented a more precocious maturation than the boys in all studied ages; the dental development among Brazilians for bath sexes, is slighty more precocious when compared with North-American children

Hoffelder, Luciana Bocudo. "Efeitos da expansão rápida da maxilia sobre o posicionamento dos caninos superiores potencialmente impactados na fase da dentadura mista." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/152704.
Full textThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes caused by rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in the maxillary canine eruption path in the mixed dentition phase. Canines in stage 8 of Nolla and that were located in sectors II, III or IV were selected and distributed in 3 Groups: Group 1 (G1) - potentially impacted canines with expansion (PICE) (n = 49), Group 2 (G2) - canines in normality with no expansion (CNNE) (n = 54) and Group 3 (G3) - canines in normality with expansion (CNWE) (n = 27). The vertical, horizontal and angular positioning of canines and adjacent teeth were evaluated in T1 and T2 with a year interval using panoramic radiographs. The data were analyzed statistically (p <0.05). The following results were obtained: After RME (T2), PICs (Group 1) improved their positioning, becoming similar to canines in normality (Group 2) in all variables. The greater horizontal and angular changes of the canines after the RME contributed to the changes of the CPIs for the less severe sectors and to maintain a high percentage of normality in Group 3 (92.59%). In general, canine vertical improvement was significantly higher in Groups 1 and 3, resulting in a higher percentage of canines erupted or near the eruption. The groups in normality (2 and 3) remained similar in most variables, except for the horizontal positioning, where the canine Group 3 showed even more favorable positioning than Group 2. Conclusion: RME had a favorable impact on the eruption of PICs, provided a reversal of the deviation of the PIC eruption path, restoring normal development.

The literature shows that malocclusion can manifest it self from the earliest stages of occlusal development and, in most types morphologies, it shows no self-correction in the later stages of occlusal development. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of malocclusion in deciduous dentition in the city of Belém- PA, examining children from public and private schools, and to check the influence of socio-economic level in the manifestation of malocclusion, so that public policy can be adopted to include preventive and interceptative into oral health services, targeting mainly to benefit the least favoured part of the population. 652 children of both sexes were examined, 3 to 6 years of age in the deciduous dentitions stage, enrolled in pre-schools in the private network and public network of education in Belém-Pará. There was a prevalence of 81,44% of malocclusion, being more common in female children in the private network (p = 0.01). The Class II malocclusion was most prevalent, followed by Class I and Class III. Among the different types of morphological malocclusion, the overbite and the posterior crossbite were more prevalent in children from the private network for both genders, although the overjet and Class II, had a higher occurrence in females only in children from the private network . The Class I and III malocclusion were more common in female children in the public network. The anterior openbite and the anterior crossbite, showed similar trends in both groups of schools for both genders. The early loss of temporary teeth was more prevalent (p=0.000) among children of the public network for both genders. Thus we can conclude that the incidence of malocclusion in deciduous dentition in the city of Belém is very high, in addition the low socio-economic influences the expression of malocclusion because they were more frequent among female children in the private network; and that the occurrence of early loss of temporary teeth in children in the public network still has an alarming rate, due to an inefficient public health policy, which serve at the preventive and interceptative level.

The primary dentition is essential for the child to perform the main oral functions: chewing, swallowing, speech and breathing. It also plays an important role in conserving the length of the dental arch and guides the eruption of permanent teeth, thus guiding their eruption direction. Imbalances and occlusal changes in this dentition may be responsible for changes in the pattern of these functions and lead to skeletal, dental and functional disharmony. Interceptive orthodontics, in which fixed and removable appliances can be used, acts to stop and treat malocclusions as soon as they are detected, in order to improve skeletal, muscular and dentoalveolar development. Early treatment offers several advantages in minimizing or even eliminating the need for complex treatments in permanent dentition, in the relationship between dental arches providing normal growth and development, in addition to having a fundamental role in improving self-esteem. Interceptive orthodontic correction is beneficial in various forms of malocclusion, such as dental crowding, crossbite, open bite and class II and class III malocclusions. This monograph has as main objective to address the different types of malocclusion in pediatric dentistry and to present the main therapeutic options using interceptive orthodontics.

Full textIntroduction: The craniofacial growth assessment and development of children is ideally multidisciplinary. The integration of the different medical areas is fundamental for a correct esthetic and functional planning of the stomatognathic system. Interceptive treatments are integrated in a set of specific approaches where pediatric dentistry and orthodontics work, avoiding malocclusion progression through the removal of deleterious habits, appliance placement or ramps/lanes. The main objective of this study was to verify, through a transverse descriptive observational analysis, interceptive treatments importance in pediatric dentistry, evaluating the knowledge and practices of the dentists. Material and methods: Three questionnaires were carried out. Questionnaire I was published online and directed to dentists, reaching 206 professionals. Questionnaires II and III were performed by the interview method, obtaining 10 participants in each. Questionnaire II was directed to children undergoing interceptive treatments and Questionnaire III to their parents. Results: 20.4% of the sample did not consult pediatric patients, so our sample for the most relevant questions was of 164 participants. All of these (100%, n = 164) considered knowing what interceptive treatments are, and 56.7% (n = 93) did not advise their implementation in patients with poor oral hygiene. However, the functional need of the patient (79.9%) was the most relevant factor. Treatment in collaboration with speech therapists (p-value = 0.004) and otorhinolaryngologists (p-value = 0.001) is prefered by professionals who have been practicing for more years. It can be seen that non-generalists dentists do not consider the cost factor for the intersegmental treatments as compared to generalists (p-value = 0,018). Almost all children (n = 9) considered the treatment easy to adapt. All of their caretakers (n = 10), said that their children 's adaptation to the treatment was good. Conclusions: Interceptive treatments are a solid reality practiced by general dentists, pediatric dentists and orthodontists. The vast majority of malocclusion cases when early diagnosed can be intercepted, trying to avoid more complex corrective treatments.
Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10284/6911.
Full textThe term interdisciplinary provides the teamwork that naturally conceives the increase of specific knowledge of each area of work. These articulation among health professionals provides better results for the rehabilitation of the patient. Thus, the present research has as main objective to clarify the perception of the interdisciplinary team work between Speech Therapy and Dental Medicine professionals. For this, a quantitative and qualitative, observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was performed with a non-probabilistic sample composed of 129 professionals from these two health areas, who work directly in Orthodontics. Three questionnaires were used, which were published online for professionals in Speech Therapy and Dental Medicine who worked directly with Orthodontics to respond. In this study, it was found that all Dentists and Speech Therapists surveyed considered this cooperation always relevant, but the practical implementation of it is not yet a constant for all. Most of the respondents recognized benefits in interdisciplinary for the patient and for their own intervention, recognizing the importance of Speech Therapy during and after orthodontic treatment, even mentioning that their absence induces orthodontic relapse. Most of the participants did not share the same physical space with Dental Medicine/Speech Therapy professionals and recognized this aspect as necessary for this interdisciplinary to be consolidated. It was also noted the lack of dissemination of the profession of Speech Therapy and the relevance of this interdisciplinary to health professionals and the community itself. In short, it was verified that the interdisciplinary between Speech Therapy and Dental Medicine is still not an effective practice in orthodontic treatments performed in Portugal, which consequently implies longer duration of interventions and less professional success. However, it is felt that the professionals' desire for it to be promoted and fulfilled, is a reality.

Full textOral breathing is a very present problem in children, and may occur due to deleterious habits such as obstruction of the airways. Oral breathing can cause changes in orofacial growth causing a disharmony in the stomatognathic system, early diagnosis is of vital importance in the interception of this pernicious habit. The dysfunction should be studied as a whole, in its dental, muscular and postural components. Oral breathing is a deviation from the normal growth and development of the child that can have harmful consequences in the long term. The treatment should be a multidisciplinary approach, in which the Dentist, Otorhinolaryngologist, Speech Therapist and Pediatrician can collaborate in the replacement of normal respiratory function.

Full textThis report is based on the clinical activity developed in the Faculty of Health Sciences, at the University Clinic of the UniversidadeCatólica Portuguesa in Viseu. It took place between September 16, 2013 and May 31, 2014, and was inserted in the fifth grade of the Dentistry course. This report aims to proceed to the enumeration and discussion of the clinical acts in which I was involved, directly or indirectly, in the wider context of the work carried out by my group of work. The last academic year permitted an improvement in different subject areas, at pedagogical and human levels, as well as the possibility and the opportunity to put into practice what I've learned in theory during the course, considering the definition of integrated treatment plans that reflect the State of the Art. Contact with different patients was vital, allowing me a multifaceted experience of personal and professional challenges and a deep enrichment of my clinical activity. Generally speaking, the process of teaching and learning in the context of supervised clinical practice met the objectives outlined initially, having in mind the acquisition of knowledge and the development of standards of clinical conduct in the context of dentistry, indispensable to basic training and with relevant importance in the future. Due to the organization and pedagogical nature of the university dental clinic, I've acquired even more knowledge in what general dentistry is concerned, thus considering the internship course an added value for the enrichment of my training as a future dentist.

Full textDentistry, as a medical field, not only is it responsible for the zeal of its own specific area of clinical intervention, but also the patient's well being at the systemic level and at its various dimensions: physical, mental and social. That being, it finds itself suffering constant evolution, requiring a concomitant transformation of its clinical techniques, scientific knowledge and ethical grounds for the professionals who practice it. This paper proposes itself to illustrate each of these competences, using for it, the clinical and scientific work carried out by the author at the University Dental Clinic of the Portuguese Catholic University, seeking to characterize it according to clinical and scientific parameters that assert themselves to be relevant to such endeavor. To attain such goal, a statistical analysis of the clinical acts performed by the author and of certain idiosyncrasies of the served population sample is made. By the same token, an interpretation, illustration and resolution of clinical cases is also performed. It seeks to illustrate the current state-of-the-art and its respective concepts, which derive themselves from scientific evidence, aiming at providing an epidemiological and clinical reading of the assisted population, as well as rendering an informed look of clinical situations encountered and of the scientific challenges to be considered.

Full textA clinical activity report has the purpose to describe and transpose the dental medical care, made by the author, during the entire year. Having this, it’s intended to justify the choices that were made, in each case, as well as report all the experiences he lived and the theoretical basis and the underlying learning process. The experience gained by the author throughout the several situations, he faced, revealed different ways of approaching each case, which could differ according to diagnose variations, behave disorders, work conditions, external environments and both cultural and geographical reasons. In every discipline is intended to achieve the proposed goals, by executing correctly every technique, sustained by protocols but it’s also essential to acquire several competences and skills that will make every medical care “evidence based”, in the future. The two clinical environments faced by the author throughout the year , due to a 3 months experience in the ERASMUS programme, allowed the data collection, regarding both the target population treated and the doctors that were responsible for those treatments. In addition, these information turned out very important to compare people from different North and South of the Europe, Netherlands and Portugal, and relate this data to their health habits. Having Netherlands as a country where the medical cares are provided in Public Health System, the author was able to compare the prevalence and the kind of treatments of both countries and the health cares and oral hygiene habits both have, as well as the work conditions.

Full textDentistry is the medical discipline responsible by the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies that usually affect the oral cavity, head and neck and also the medical discipline responsible by the patients’ oral rehabilitation and maintaining an adequate hygiene, via treatments and patient instruction, of the dental pieces and the periodontal tissues. Due to its extremely practical component and its many areas that require communication with one another to achieve the desired treatment plan, it’s very important that the students, during their master’s degree, have not only a good theoretical preparation but an integration of that knowledge in a clinical environment as well; having this in mind, one can see the importance of the clinical components of the many areas that comprise Dentistry when preparing new professionals in that medical discipline. This report describes the activity that the group 78 had, during the year 2013 and 2014, in the University Clinic of the Portuguese Catholic University; the results, obtained from the general and particular assessment of data, will be presented and discussed; a case of periodontal surgery will also be presented and discussed in a separate section due to its differential nature.

Full textThe purpose of this report is to conduct a reasoned analysis and discussion of the clinical activity carried out by the author of the work during his last year of training in the Integrated Master of Dental Medicine (MIMD) of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa de Viseu, in the period between September 2019 and May 2020. It is a method that, allowing the valorization of the professional future in the job market, leads to a deep reflection of the whole practice carried out in a clinical context, with its successes and failures, constituting itself as a very strong learning base. The clinical action was obtained through two clinical contexts with marked differences, in the first semester at the Hospital Odontològic of the University of Barcelona at Campus of Bellvitge-Fundació Josep Finestres, in Spain under the Erasmus + mobility program and the second semester at the Universitary Dental Clinic of the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa de Viseu. This exhibition also intends to describe a little of this unique experience of contact with different cultures, ways of working, procedures, increasing the capacity to adapt to adverse environment through the elaboration of clinical data, creating a contextualization of the Dental Medicine paradigm in Portugal and Spain. The collected data were inserted and evaluated in a database carried out on the Microsoft Office Excel® platform (2019) (Microsoft®, USA having since then carried out a descriptive statistical analysis referring to more general aspects such as the subject area inserted (the first semester was in the context of an integrated clinic) and the intervention as an operator / assistant and then the characteristics that concern the patient, such as age, sex, number of consultations, clinical history, medication and risk factors. The frequency in the most varied disciplinary areas leads the student to a better preparation to face the diversity of cases that may reach him / her in the dental office, and the disciplines with clinical practice were: Integrated Clinic, Operative Dentistry, Orthodontics, Occlusion, Oral Surgery , Endodontics, Periodontology, Removable Prosthesis, Fixed Prosthesis, Pediatric Dentistry and Oral Medicine. Finally, concrete clinical cases are presented with a critical weighting using bibliographic references of existing and updated scientific literature.
