The genus Odontophrynus, composed of ten species, is found in practically the entire south of South America. Odontophrynus americanus was the first vertebrate registered to present natural polyploidy, considering that most individuals have 2N = 4x = 44 chromosomes, although having 2N = 2x = 22 chromosomes is considered the ancestral condition for all genera of the family Odontophrynidae. The present study aimed to analyze the karyotype of O. americanus, providing a detailed and comparative description of conventional chromosomal markers, with focus on a possible diploidization process operatin

We found novel character-states supporting the monophyly of Odontophrynus, Proceratophrys, and Odontophrynus + Macrogenioglottus. The character-states observed in O. cultripes support conflicting phylogenetic positions within Odontophrynus. Herein we evaluate the phylogenetic position, and revisit the generic allocation of Odontophrynus salvatori, which has for long been considered controversial because it exhibits intermediate morphological features between Odontophrynus and Proceratophrys. By assessing a fragment of the 16S mitochondrial gene from topotypical specimens, we confirm that O. salvatori is a member of the genus Proceratophrys and sister to P. moratoi, also forming a clade with P. concavitympanum and P. ararype. Therefore, we formally transfer O. salvatori to the genus Proceratophrys [Proceratophrys salvatori (Carama

Abstract:
The genus Proceratophrys Miranda-Ribeiro comprises 41 species distributed in South America, especially in Brazil (Nascimento et al. 2019). Proceratophrys species have been traditionally organized into four species groups based on morphology of supraocular and postocular swellings, and presence or absence of rostral appendage (Cruz & Napoli 2010). However, these groupings are not supported by molecular data (Teixeira et al. 2012; Dias et al. 2013, Mângia et al. 2018).

Abstract:
Most eukaryotic genomes contain substantial portions of repetitive DNA sequences. These are located primarily in highly compacted heterochromatin and, in many cases, are one of the most abundant components of the sex chromosomes. In this sense, the anuran Proceratophrys boiei represents an interesting model for analyses on repetitive sequences by means of cytogenetic techniques, since it has a karyotype with large blocks of heterochromatin and a ZZ/ZW sex chromosome system. The present study describes, for the first time, families of satellite DNA (satDNA) in the frog P. boiei. Its genome size

Records of malformation in amphibians have significantly increased on a global scale. The main causes of malformations are linked to environmental contaminants, and records in preserved environments are uncommon. We reported malformations in three anuran species belonging to three families: Crossodactylustimbuhy (Hylodidae), Proceratophrysschirchi (Odontophrynidae) and Thoropamiliaris (Cycloramphidae). All records were found within the Reserva Biológica Augusto Ruschi, a well-preserved protected remnant of Atlantic rainforest located in the mountains of the state of Espírito Santo, southeaster

Based on concordant differences in morphology, male advertisement call, and 16S mtDNA barcode distance, we describe a new species of Proceratophrys from southern Amazonia, in the states of Mato Grosso and Pará, Brazil. The new species is most similar to P. concavitympanum and P. ararype but differs from these species by its proportionally larger eyes and features of the advertisement call. Additionally, genetic distance between the new species and its congeners is 3.0–10.4% based on a fragment of the 16S rRNA gene, which is greater than the threshold typically characterizing distinct species o

The genus Proceratophrys Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920, frogs from the family Odontophrynidae Lynch, currently contains 41 nominal species with poorly resolved phylogenetic relationships (Frost 2019; Mângia et al. 2018). Molecular data from 15 and 18 Proceratophrys species support the monophyletic hypothesis of the genus (Teixeira-Jr et al. 2012; Dias et al. 2013; respectively) but do not fully resolve the phylogenetic relationship among the species. Currently, there are advertisement call parameters provided for 31 species of Proceratophrys in the literature (Ferreira et al. 2016; Andrade et al. 2018

The parasitofauna of amphibians from the province of San Juan has been studied very little. In particular, only one helminthological study has been reported on Odontophrynus occidentalis (Berg, 1896). The aim of the present study was to describe the endoparasites of O. occidentalis, including protozoa and nematodes. Twenty-one adults (13 males and 8 females) of O. occidentalis were analysed for parasites. Collected parasites were examined using standard parasitological techniques. Parasitological descriptors such as prevalence and mean intensity were calculated. Specimens belonging to the phyl
