Abstract:
First record of egg parasitoids of Oebalus poecilus (Dallas, 1851) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in rice in Maranhão, Brazil This is the first report of the species Trissolcus urichi (Crawford, 1913) and Telenomus podisi Ashmead, 1893 (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) parasitizing Oebalus poecilus (Dallas, 1851) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) eggs in rice in Maranhão, Brazil. These parasitoids were collected in the municipality of Itapecuru Mirim, MA, in an area of 0.2 ha cultivated with rice. The eggs collected exhibited an average parasitism of 11.4%. Twenty egg parasitoids were collected and identified, these being one Tr. urichi and nineteen Te. podisi. The presence of these naturally occurring parasitoids in the field opens perspectives for updating the species of parasitoids that parasitize pentatomid eggs in rice fields in Brazil.

Abstract:
This study was conducted to investigate parasitism of naturally occurring pentatomid eggs in rice crops in a Cerrado-Caatinga ecosystem during the rainy and dry seasons in Teresina, Piauí, Brazil. Also, it provides information on the incidence and seasonality of parasitoid species. Parasitism was registered only during the rainy season, where Telenomus podisi (Ashmead, 1893) parasitized Oebalus poecilus (Dallas, 1851), Tibraca limbativentris (Stal, 1860) and Euschistus heros (Fabricius, 1798) eggs. Additionally, Trissolcus urichi (Crawford, 1913) was collected from O. poecilus and T. limbativentris eggs. Ooencyrtus anasae (Ashmead, 1887) was found in O. poecilus eggs. Such findings provide information that can be used to supplement the management of pentatomid pests in the rice agroecosystems, in Piauí, Brazil.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Oebalus poecilus (Dallas) is an important pest affecting irrigated rice in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It hibernates during the coldest months of the year in refuges such as bamboo litter. This study examined O. poecilus hibernation to determine the causes of mortality during this period. The study was conducted in a 140 m² bamboo plantation located in a rice-growing area in Eldorado do Sul County (30° 02’ S and 51° 23’ W), RS. During June 2000 to April 2002, 63 samples of litter were taken in weekly or fortnightly intervals, and the number of bugs recorded in the laboratory. The arrival at the hibernation site (bamboo litter) began in the first fortnight of March, and was completed in the beginning of May. O. poecilus left this refuge from middle October to the end of December. Parasitism by tachinid flies and Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. fungus were the most important mortality factors.

Abstract:
The state of development of the internal reproductive organs of male and female Oebalus poecilus (Dallas) as well as the body fat amount in the abdominal cavity during hibernation, of individuals sampled in bamboo litter in Eldorado do Sul (30º02'S and 51°23'W), RS, Brazil was investigated. Females and males showed the abdominal cavity filled with body fat in the beginning of the hibernation phase. The decrease in fat reserve level occurred from August on for males and from October on for females. Ovaries and testis doubled in length and tripled in width from immature to the reproductive phase. Male sexual maturation occurred in the hibernation sites while for females it occurred later on outside of the sites. Reproductive organ immaturity and abdominal body fat hypertrophy characterized the diapause of O. poecilus.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The antifeedant and insecticidal effects of two commercial neem (Azadirachta indica) oil formulations (Dalneem and Nim-I-Go) to Oebalus poecilus were evaluated on irrigated rice. To evaluate the antifeedant effect, both formulations were tested at 1% and 2% (v/v) concentration levels. The insecticidal effect was evaluated at 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 4% (v/v) concentrations of Dalneem, by ingestion. Both experiments were conducted with four replications by treatment, containing one panicle and adult insects segregated by gender (two insects per plot for the antifeedant effect and five for the insecticidal effect). Both products were efficient, reducing the damage caused by insects. Insects fed less on the panicles treated with neem oil, causing lower number of feeding sheaths per panicle and lower percentage of damaged grains than the control. Spikelets weight was higher in panicles treated with neem oils. Females caused significantly higher damage than males in controls, for numbers of feeding sheaths and for the feeding deterrence index. Only at the 4% (v/v) concentration level, Dalneem caused adult mortality higher than in the control. Results showed that neem oil formulations, at > 1% (v/v) concentration, can be used to reduce the quantitative and qualitative damages caused by O. poecilus in lowland rice.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Oebalus poecilus (Dallas 1851) is one of the stink bug species of great economic importance for rice producers in Brazil of irrigated, flood and upland cropping systems. These pentatomids are known as stink bugs of panicles, because both nymphs and adults feed mainly on panicles. Stink bug attacks result in pecky (spots) seeds, lower mass, germinative reduction and deformed grains. Bearing these factors in mind, the aim of this study was to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative losses in commercial cultivars of upland rice (Cambará variety), submitted to different population levels of stink bugs of panicles, O. poecilus, at different reproductive growth stages. The results show that in upland rice (Cambará variety), the rice grains are susceptible to quantitative (number and weight) and qualitative (pecky, atrophy, chalky and broken grains) damage during all panicle development. However, when the insects feed during anthesis/caryopsis and milky stage cause significantly greater percentage of empty grains (up to 83%) than when they feed of grains during later phases of panicle development. This characteristic was also observed for the reduction in grain weight. This information may benefit producers and other researchers, allowing them to focus on the monitoring efforts of O. poecilus in most susceptible phases of the attack of this insect. This will enable decision-making about what control measures should be taken, and when, in order to control stink bugs of panicles.

Abstract:
Oebalus poecilus is pointed as an important pest in the irrigated rice culture. In Rio Grande do Sul, this insect adopts the hibernation strategy, spending the coldest months of the year in refoges like the bamboo litter. This paper aimed at clarifying aspects related to this life strategy. This study was conducted in a bamboo growth around 260 m long, located in a rice growing area, in Eldorado do Sul municipality(30° 02'S e 51°23'W), RS. From this bamboo growth a 140 m2 experimental area was taken, set in the east-west direction. In this area, during two years from June 2000 on, samplings were made at every weeekly or fortnightly intervai, and at each time, 56 sample units with 300cm3 of foliage litter were taken randomly. In the laboratory, the bugs were extracted manually, separated and counted. A part of the alive insects were killed in ethyl acetate vapor and dissected in 70% alcohol, to investigate the phenological state of the reproductive internai organs as indicators of the diapause state. The following points were verified: a) the arrival at the hibernation refuge begins in the first week of March, finishing in the beginning of May; b) the departure begins in the middle of October extending to the last week of December; c) the bugs are distributed in an aggregate spatial panem in the site; d) ali the individuais remain with their internai organs immature and with a great amount of fat bodies in the abdominal cavity along hibernation, a diapause characteristic state; e) during the diapause there is a progressive growth in the size of testicles still inside the hibernation site, what was not verified for the ovaries; f) the proportion of sampled insects presenting Beauveria bassiana range between five and 12%; g) in laboratory, the fungus revealed to be pathogenic to O. poecilus non-hibernating adults, however, when applied in the hibernation refuge, it did not provoke mortality.

The rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the cereals most produced and consumed in the world. In it the insect species, Tibraca limbativentris, Oebalus poecilus and Oebalus ypsilongriseus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), generate significant damage. Insect populations in crops can be estimated through the use of interpolation procedures, which can generate continuous surfaces by single point sampling units. The study aimed to compare the methods of ordinary kriging and inverse distance weighted interpolation applied on the spatial distribution of population density T. limbativentris, O. poecilus and O. ypsilongriseus in rice cultivation in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In the locality of Parada Link, Santa Maria, we generated in six fields, a grid of 30m x 30m. From seeding have been made to seven evaluations for each tillage in area 1m², corresponding to 200 rice plants. In these areas, the adults of the species were quantified and the sum used for the analysis. The values were submitted to the ordinary kriging interpolation in different semivariogram models and inverse distance weighted in different weights being the best for each evaluation compared by cross-validation. The ordinary kriging interpolation method showed better performance than the method of inverse distance weighted applied in the spatial distribution of population density of T. limbativentris and O. poecilus in rice cultivation in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. O. ypsilongriseus could not generate estimates for comparison.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This work describes the identification of sex pheromone of the stinkbug Oebalus poecilus (Dallas, 1851), (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), as well as the procedures for pheromone synthesis. Oebalus poecilus is one of the major pests of rice throughout Brasil, in both upland and lowland environment, causing great grain losses. The most common method to control this pest has been the use of insecticides, which are notoriously harmful to human health and for all species of animals and insects. The search for environmentally friendly alternatives, guided us in trying to identify sex pheromone of O. poecilus. Analysis of extracts obtained from aerations of males and females showed that males produce a specific compound, which could be the sex pheromone of this species; this compound was identified as zingiberenol. The synthesis of the eight possible isomers of the starting zingiberenol from (S) and (R) - citronellal was conducted. Were performed three steps: Michael’s addition, followed by intramolecular aldol condensation and subsequent methylation with methyl lithium. Bioassays with these compounds indicated that the mixture of the two less polar isomers that come from the (S) -citronellal is attractive to the females.
