Abstract:
Background: We aim at presenting a clinical case of a 37-year-old patient, who has been a nun for several years and at the moment can no longer adapt to the environment in which she lives and to the requirements of everyday life. The perspective of this analysis is both a psychiatric one, explaining the diagnosis of Axis II of Histrionic Immature Personality Disorder, but also the overlap with dissociative conversion disorder, and explanatory from a psychodynamic perspective, by addressing the regression issues and the presence of the Oedipus Complex. Histrionic Immature Personality Disorder and its overlap with Dissociative/Conversion Disorder are conditions with negative effects in terms of adaptation to the social environment and assuming professional responsibilities. Also, the particularities in the sphere of immaturity make it difficult to relate to those around. Method: Hospitalization, psychiatric interview, psychodynamic interview, psychological tests - CAQ Personality Questionnaire and the Szondi Test, psychodynamic interpretations. Results: The results highlight aspects of an immature premorbid personality, characterized by a high degree of sensitivity. Currently, the patient's ego is fragile and cannot adapt to the emotional meanings in the environment in which she lives, which leads to functional crises and manifestations such as dissociative fugue. Conclusions: Dissociative manifestations are associated with immaturity and reduced ability to adapt to professional requirements. On a personal level, the same immaturity leads to the denial of one's sexuality and projection.

Abstract:
The facts of Gogol's appeal to the models of classical forms of myth and ritual are interesting not only by themselves but also in the aspect of their relationship with the arsenal of Christian mythology. The fundamental point here is that in light of the historical interpretation of the myth and the Revelation by F. W. J. Schelling, the mythology since its initial stage organically developed to Christianity, to the truths of Revelation (as the historical movement “flowed” into them). The symbolic complex of the story Vij, interlacing with Eros and Thanatos, allows parallels to the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice since in the case of the story Vij and in the case of myth, the motive of prohibition on sight also holds. The philosopher (i.e. the poet in the archaic and romantic notion) Homa Brut comes into contact with the world of death not of his own free will, besides, the panicle Eurydice died because of him. Orpheus partakes of the Dionysian sacraments. A visit to Orpheus of hell equated him, in Christian understanding, with Christ. In Gogol's story Vij, Dionysus and Christ have implicitly come together. The motive of the story Vij for blindness is related to Oedipus's self-blindness motive. Mythological Erinnes, persecuted by Oedipus, are old women, which correlates with one of the chthonic incarnations of the plaque, thereby drawing closer to the goddesses of revenge, punishment, and remorse of conscience. The fact of the final recognition of Oedipus as “holy” is reflected in the potential Christian semantics of the image of Homa as a martyr and passion-bearer. As the winner of the witch, the deliverer of people from her misfortunes and the passion bearer Homa is a Christian ascetic. Against the background of Christian parallels, the second stay of Homa on the farm becomes as if his “second coming”, symbolically comparable to the expected second coming of Christ, who is coming all the time. The terrible glance of Vij and pannochka certainly reminds of the slaying glance of Medusa Gorgon, which forced all living things to petrify. There is pathos of fighting tyranny in ridding the farm from the witch by Homa. Although Homa defends himself first of all in the beating scene, the general social meaning of his action is obvious. The power of the pannochka (she is the daughter of a wealthy sotnik), who for some reason considers himself pious, is not only socio-political but, in the main, existential-anthropological, this domination over man as a species, over man as such. The motives of ancient Greek and in general pagan mythology are closely intertwined in Gogol's story with Christian motives, which formed the unique spiritual and aesthetic synthesis of the story Vij.

Abstract:
Structuralism is a way of decoding and studying aspects of human conduct, tradition, and love that relates factors of a conceptual system that reflects patterns underlying a superficial range. King Oedipus is King Laius’ biological son who he neglects at birth to prevent a prophecy by the Oracle that he would kill his father and marry his mother. He is adopted by a royal family in Corinth but later returns to Thebes and fulfills the prophecy mystically. He later finds out and pops his eyes out and his led out of the city by his daughter The French social anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss applied the structuralist outlook to cultural phenomena like mythology and kinship relations. To interpret the Oedipus myth, he placed the specific story of King Oedipus within the context of the whole cycle of tales connected with the city of Thebes. Concrete details from the narrative are seen in the framework of a wider structure and the overall system of elementary dyadic bigger structure is seen as pairs with obvious symbolic, thematic and archetypal resonance.

Abstract:
The authors discuss the psychoanalytic treatment of Little Hans, drawing on the perspective offered by Laplanche's concept of “enigmatic messages,” which they believe can contribute to a better understanding of this case history. They conclude that Little Hans's positive Oedipus complex conceals his negative Oedipus complex in which he represents his parents’ oedipal problems in a distorted fashion. They demonstrate the way his parents project aspects of these problems into Hans's psyche, where his subsequent identifications with them lead to substitutive formations. They trace the course of Little Hans's horse phobia and examine his search for substitutive formations that have to align with his parents’ defenses if they are to succeed in securing his safety and their affection.

Is a social complex identical to many united people or is it a group entity in addition to the people? For specificity, I will assume that a social complex is a plural subject in Margaret Gilbert’s sense. By appeal to my theory of Aspects, according to which there can be qualitative difference without numerical difference, I give an answer that is a middle way between metaphysical individualism and metaphysical holism. This answer will enable answers to two additional metaphysical questions: (i) how can two social complexes have all the same members and (ii) how can there be a social complex of social complexes?

Abstract:
Abstract Thanks to the tumultuous development of digital technologies, nowadays we live in a world without boundaries, characterized by liquid communities that meet and collide, sometimes denying mutual recognition. We move in a communicative bulimia where information runs like in a circus where the sense and the value of ‘communicating’ are often lost, fuelling forms of misunderstanding, violence and exclusion that contribute to fuel discomfort and isolation. In the information and knowledge society, communication is increasingly discriminating for emancipation and empowerment of people, organizations, and communities. For this reason, in this essay, we intend to deepen both the evolution of the community’s space through digital technologies and the value and role of the concept of empowerment applied to community development. The essence of the essay is to reflect on its social implications in terms of welfare communities and valorization of the heritage of relational goods that are constitutive of every social and community space.

Abstract:
Rebecca is a novel which is created by Daphne Du Maurier. That novel is retold by Margaret Tarner in 1991. The main character of this novel is the narrator. This study uses A Freudian Psychological Analysis. The purpose of this study is to trace the Electra Complex (the female version of the Oedipus Complex) in Rebecca. So, the steps of this study are identify the symbolic father figure and the symbolic mother figure and trace how the main character tries to displace the symbolic mother figures in that novel. There are two results of this study. The first, Mr. De Winter is the symbolic figure father, while Mrs. Van Hooper, Rebecca, and Mrs. Danvers are the symbolic of mother figures. The second, the main character tries to displace the mother figures. The main character is marrying Mr. De Winter before Mrs. Van Hooper realizes her plan to make Mr. De Winter as the next victim. Then, the main character is trying to displace Rebecca by doing: (1) make social call with Beatrice and Giles, (2) prepare the best appearance for the Ball, and (3) cover her husband as murderer. Then, the main character is trying to displace Mrs. Danvers by convincing Mrs. Danvers to be her friend, but Mrs. Danvers decides to burn Manderley and go away from that place. Therefore, the narrator suffers Electra Complex and becomes the female version of the Oedipus Complex.

Abstract:
A healthy smile is one of the main components of a person’s attractiveness, which makes it possible to improve the quality of communication with others in a personal and social aspect. Dental health depends on the state of the periodontal complex. The vast majority of people of different ages suffer from periodontal disease and seek dental care. The significant prevalence, the adverse effect of foci of periodontal infection on the body, the large loss of teeth cause both medical and social significance of this problem. In this regard, the tasks for the treatment of inflammatory diseases of periodontal tissues are determined before the dentist. The treatment of gingivitis and periodontitis is a complex and lengthy process that requires a comprehensive approach from the dentist, finding new remedies and methods of treatment. The article presents the results of the treatment of chronic generalized periodontitis of moderate severity using the drug “Galavit”. After the course of treatment, the index indicators reflected the achievement of positive dynamics. The content of the total aerobic and anaerobic microflora of the periodontal pockets was eliminated 1.5 - 2 times. In the comparison group in the dynamics of treatment to the end of therapy, there was a decrease in the number of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms to etiologically significant indicators. The results of the study indicate the superiority of the use of complex therapeutic measures with the use of the drug “Galavit” over the traditional treatment of chronic generalized periodontitis of moderate severity. It is proposed for practicing dentists to use the drug in question in a complex scheme for the treatment of periodontal tissue diseases, since this drug has shown its high clinical efficacy.

Abstract:
The depiction of boyhood in the Western world of comics underwent a subtle transformation in the shadow of the Second World War. Major artists of these sequential artistic texts (such as Schultz and Spiegelman) fine-tuned key elements in the set of resources they drew on, effectively changing how readers/viewers engage with the young male protagonists in comics. The shift in affect was realized in storylines; instead of these being driven by external, performance-oriented representations of ‘boyhood’ punctuated by mischievous deeds or heroic exploits, drama was created by a much more complex and nuanced depiction of boyhood that explored the internal emotional and psychological worlds of main boy characters. Drawing on representative examples from two different sets of comics, this article applies a bi-modal, semiotic approach that specifically addresses how facial expressions, gaze and speech/thought bubbles, elements of the interpersonal meta-function, construct a more complex representation of boyhood.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, we explore how we can use catchment resilience as a unifying concept to manage and regulate catchments, using structured reviews to support our perspective. Catchments are complex systems with interrelated natural, social, and technical aspects. The exposure, vulnerability, and resilience of these aspects (separately and in combination) are the latent conditions, which, when triggered by a hydrohazard, result in catchment impacts. In complex catchment systems, resilience is the ability to bounce back, the ability to absorb, and the ability to transform. When all three abilities are accounted for, we are forced to consider the interactions of the catchment system. Six main complexity concepts can be used to frame how we approach evaluating catchment resilience. These concepts are: natural-social-technical aspects, interactions, spatial scales, time scales, multiple forms of evidence, and uncertainty. In analysing these complexity concepts, we have found that there are several gaps in current practice. Requirements for future methodological approaches are suggested. Central to any effective approach is the incorporation of a linking systems or interaction analysis, which draws together the natural-social-technical system in a meaningful way. If our approaches do not begin to acknowledge the interdependencies and interactions, we may miss substantial opportunities to enhance catchment resilience.

The current demographic situation is characterized by a significant increase in the aging of the population. The aging process is accompanied by the inclusion of certain active mechanisms that contribute to the disruption of the life of the human body. The complex of these mechanisms fits into the concept of metabolic syndrome. The presented materials convincingly prove that the problem of metabolic syndrome is largely a gerontological problem. Its development contributes to premature aging of the body and shortening the life span of the population of the planet. The development and widespread implementation of special dispensary Programs, as well as complex targeted therapy of various pathogenic manifestations of this syndrome, will significantly improve public health and increase life expectancy.

The research is aimed at looking at social relationship and personal problems in the United Kingdom through the eyes of a Pakistani-British writer, Hanif Kureishi. This will be done through the possibility of applying three psychoanalytic concepts, namely identification, Oedipus complex and midlife crisis to literary works. The short stories selected were ‘Strangers when we meet’, ‘That was then’, and ‘Girl’ which were published in Midnight All Day, a short story collection written by Hanif Kureishi, an English writer. The analysis was conducted on the characters of the stories which were subjected to the concepts. The results revealed that the concepts could be applied to the relevant characters. Besides, through the applications, we can see the problems experienced by the characters in the story which may reflect the real people in the United Kingdom.

Abstract:
Social aspects of dementia are becoming increasingly important as part of a wider shift in emphasis from cure to care. This is partly because approaches based on finding a cure have proved far more difficult and complex than originally imagined (WHO, 2016). New evidence on the effectiveness of public health measures, that while incidence is growing as the proportion of older people in society increases its prevalence amongst older adults is actually falling, has also lead to increased interest in social dimensions of prevention, lifestyle change, and practical intervention in community settings (Prince et al., 2016; Kivipelto et al., 2017). This, in turn, has led to a rediscovery of the role of supports to people living with dementia in their daily lives, the needs of informal carers, and professional activities that can maintain the social engagement of each party (Winblad et al., 2016). The expansion of practice around person-centered care, beyond traditional institutional settings, has also contributed to a socialized view of how interactions in dementia care are thought about (Bartlett et al., 2017), as has an increased awareness of the effects of the social construction of dementia in the public mind (Biggs, 2018). Most recently, people living with dementia, and particularly with respect to younger onset dementia, have begun to find a voice and to make connections to the wider disability movement (Dementia Alliance International, 2017). Each of these developments, in their different ways, have led to a re-emphasis on psycho-social elements of dementia, its experience, and how that might translate into clinical practice and service delivery.

Abstract:
Among Lacan’s fundamental developmental concepts is the dynamic of ‘le non/nom’. Lacan held that the paternal ‘non’ functions to separate the baby from the symbiotic and preverbal maternal relationship. Hence, ‘le non’ inaugurates ‘le nom’, naming, i.e., language usage, and energizes the infantile Oedipus complex. Likewise, in the development of new group, and as an element of any self-reflecting group, the leader serves as the ‘third,’ using and encouraging the use of language to move process from its underlying basic assumptiveness to verbally symbolized and articulated emotional experience. As illustrated in a two-day group process workshop, a therapeutic strategy of ‘le non/nom’—structuring, limit-setting, refusing, inviting, and embracing was effective to the extent to which verbal communication could be tolerated, trusted, and appreciated.

Abstract:
Five related issues involved in the analysis of services are discussed. First, it is shown that it is incorrect to suggest that there is a single route to the contemporary economy with high employment in the service sector. The Fisher–Clark thesis is discussed and criticised. In the specific case of the United Kingdom it is shown that service industries were of considerable importance even during the supposed heyday of Victorian manufacturing industry. This is shown by analysing certain regional indicators. It is further suggested that the crucial role of especially financial services cannot be understood separately from the broader Makler or middleman economy which in part predated the extensive growth of manufacturing industry. Second, some of the recent arguments of Gershuny and Miles are analysed. It is shown that their formulations are insufficiently social, both in the sense of ignoring changes in the social relations underpinning capitalist production both of manufacturing and of service industries, and of neglecting the impact of ‘social struggles' on the forms and levels of service employment. Third, a number of criteria are discussed by which different service industries can be separated off from each other. The criteria considered are ownership, market, product, degree of ‘commodification’, function, and character of the exchange. A classification based on elements of each of these is proposed in order to deal with UK data sources. Fourth, analysis is developed of eleven different forms of service sector restructuring. Some consideration is paid to the problems of explaining which of these will be found in particular sectors. Particular attention is devoted to considering the degree of importance of the ‘labour’ factor. Last, some of the processes affecting the ‘private consumer services' concerned with tourism are analysed. In particular, attention is devoted to aspects of the physical and social setting within which the service delivery takes place. An attempt is made to demonstrate which particular forms of service sector restructuring will be found in those tourist services in British coastal resorts. The exceptionally complex nature of the forces affecting employment levels in such places is shown in some detail.

Abstract:
The authors are mainly focused on special features of using art-therapeutic techniques to facilitate adaptation of several categories of the population to the information about environment- based health risks. They consider the methodological issues of presenting the ideas about health risks within the medical ecological content, of informing about those risks, since the lack of attention to those issues leads to additional anxiety in the population, as well as methods of correction of the latter through art-therapy methods developed by the authors. A psychological support program is suggested, which consists of three stages: diagnostic, psychological correction, psychological and social support. The first stage suggests psychological diagnostics, which include methods that allow for psychological and emotional background assessment. Based on the results of the diagnostics and social data, a complex assessment is made about the main problems of a person and a decision is made about the participation in psychological correction, which consists of individual and groups sessions. The second stage is aimed at the correction of negative emotions and feelings, as well as reaching solutions that are more complex. Art-therapy is suggested as the main psychosocial correction method, the use of which can create safe art-therapeutic environment, where the main means of interaction is a constructive dialogue, based on creating and examining an art product of a client, ‘clientart product-psychologist’, where the client feels protected enough to express their feelings. At the third stage, the clients continue to work with the psychologist as part of the psychological social support, the essence of which is given in this article as well.

It has been perceived that the evolution of culture in the Balkans was simultaneously influenced by internal and external factors, and this contributed to the very rapid acceptance of Neolithic values and the Neo- lithic way of life in the period from 6500 to 6200 calBC.

Abstract:
This paper describes the development and implementation of a classroom experience involving problem-based and project-based learning with community engagement in an engineering design context. While most User-Centered Design courses ask students to critically analyze and synthesize user needs, particularly of users who they see as “not like them”, our version is unique in having students wrestle with concepts of power, privilege, and oppression alongside developing prototypes that address sociotechnical aspects of engineering design that are rarely discussed in engineering courses. The course project described in this paper was developed to integrate issues of homelessness with engineering design. To achieve this goal, we partnered with a local non-profit organization that provides access to safe, mobile showers for our unhoused neighbors. Considering the context and needs of people who experience homelessness, students built solar water heater prototypes that integrated with the mobile shower units of our partners. Our goal with this course is to demonstrate to students that technical solutions are often insufficient for solving sociotechnical problems. In this case, the partnership with the non-profit organization was critical to conveying to students that engineering alone cannot solve homelessness.

Abstract:
In modern conditions of profound changes in Russian social reality socio-cultural space and social competition became a powerful factor contributing to the mobilization of the activity of individuals, groups, society as a whole. The desire of people to take a more favorable social position, the struggle for various resources construct new models of human behavior, new practices. Social competition is viewed as a form of social ties and the type of social interactions reflecting the ability of achieving goals in conditions of competition with others. It permeates the entire social fabric inherent in various social groups, organizations, including such high-status and complex ones like universities. The article analyzes the sociocultural mechanisms that accompany social competition, such as pragmatization and rationalization of consciousness and behavior, transformation of traditional values. The mechanisms of flexible-contextual rationality, deviations of values from ideal attitudes are analyzed. The practices simulating (imitating) the processes of organizing and implementing various aspects of the educational process at the university are presented. These practices contribute to the successful attainment of the actors’ goal, but are dysfunctional in the instrumental aspects related to how goal attainment occurs in a competitive environment. The influence of competitive conditions on the growth of authoritarian and bureaucratic tendencies is shown; usage of presentation paradigm and point-rating system; McDonaldized practices in which quantity is synonymous to quality. Some problems social-humanitarian cycle lecturers reducing their competitiveness, are demonstrated. The analyzed practices reflect the process of constructing the sociocultural space of universities, institutionalizing a new normative-value reality.

Abstract:
Thinking skills are essential to achieve sustainable social development. Nonetheless, there is no specific instrument that assesses all of these skills as a whole. The present study aimed to design and validate a scale to assess complex thinking skills in adult people. A scale of 22 items assessing the following aspects: analysis and problem solving, critical analysis, metacognition, systemic analysis, and creativity, in five levels, was created. This scale was validated in 626 university students from Peru. In total, 16 experts in the field helped to determine the content validity of the scale (Aiken’s V value higher than 0.8). The confirmatory factor analysis allowed the evaluation of the structure of the five factors theoretically proposed and the goodness of fit indexes was satisfactory. An item was eliminated during the process and the scale resulted in 21 items. The composite reliability for the different factors was ranged between 0.794 and 0.867. The invariance between genders was also checked and the concurrent validity was proved. The study concludes that the content validity, construct validity, concurrent validity, and composite reliability levels of the COMPLEX-21 scale are appropriate.

Aspect based opinion mining investigates deeply, the emotions related to one’s aspects. Aspects and opinion word identification is the core task of aspect based opinion mining. In previous studies aspect based opinion mining have been applied on service or product domain. Moreover, product reviews are short and simple whereas, social reviews are long and complex. However, this study introduces an efficient model for social reviews which classifies aspects and opinion words related to social domain. The main contributions of this paper are auto tagging and data training phase, feature set definition and dictionary usage. Proposed model results are compared with CR model and Naïve Bayes classifier on same dataset having accuracy 98.17% and precision 96.01%, while recall and F1 are 96.00% and 96.01% respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed model performs better than the CR model and Naïve Bayes classifier.

Abstract:
This paper takes Deleuze’s concept of the “crystals of time” – which condenses, metaphorically, different possibilities of what he calls the “time-image” in cinema – as its point of departure, and does in reverse what Ian Buchanan does where he proposes that one can use the notion of “schizoanalysis” from Deleuze and Guattari’s Anti-Oedipus for the exploration of cinema. In other words, what I do here is to transfer the notion of different time-crystals in cinema to different domains, namely those of human subjectivity and social history. The reason behind this attempt at cross-fertilisation is that, if one reads Deleuze’s book on Kant together with that on the time-image in cinema, the parallel between Kant’s revolutionary reconceptualisation of time (against the backdrop of the Aristotelian conception) and Deleuze’s on the time-image in cinema (as opposed to the “movement-image”) becomes apparent. It follows that, if time comprises the condition of the possibility of human subjectivity (for Kant), and the cinema of the time-image demonstrates that something similar holds for the “fullest” possibility of cinema – time here usurping the position held previously by movement in film – then the concepts employed by Deleuze to come to grips with the multiplicity of cinematic possibilities or virtualities and their actualisations may prove useful for articulating a model of human subjectivity and, at the level of collective subjectivities, social history. Deleuze’s metaphor of “time-crystals” is therefore employed here, not only to give a brief outline of human subjectivity as temporally constituted, but further to focus on social history, or more specifically on different temporal/historical aspects, virtual and actual, of neoliberal capitalism. This is done via the four types of time-crystals distinguished by Deleuze (in cinema), namely the “perfect crystal”, “flawed crystal”, “crystal of seeds” and “decaying crystal”.

Abstract:
At its best, the work of the social sector is about changing society—the underlying norms, attitudes and power relations—and at the very least, ameliorating some of the ills present, for example, paucity of access to health or food. It is this desire for change or amelioration that provides the motive force for organisational members. To build this motive force, organisation development (OD) interventions need to work on some or all of the following: building greater ownership of organisational staff through tweaking governance methods and organisational structures, (founder-led or an institutionalised structure); mirroring expected norms within community with those observed in the organisation; having clarity about the vision of the community; working with organisational dilemmas; and having a clear theory of change. The last implies building and understanding the complex nature of society and social change and interventions therein; and as a corollary, a culture of debate and thoughtfulness.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate how, if at all, organizational dynamics changed at US airlines after an industry wide modification to mandatory retirement age regulations in 2007. Findings challenge assumptions that society, organizations, and employees will all unequivocally benefit from abolishing mandatory retirement by investigating the impact of age-related policy changes on US airline pilots. Design/methodology/approach In total, 43 semi-structured interviews were conducted with captains and copilots from US airlines between September 2010 and July 2011. From this data set, two informant subgroups emerged: first, senior captains averaging 59 years of age; and second, junior pilots averaging 43.5 years of age. Findings Findings revealed that both senior and junior pilots reported retirement age policy changes created an antagonistic environment, pitting employees against each other in competition over scarce resources. Research limitations/implications Paper findings are based on empirical materials collected during an 11 month snapshot-in-time between September 2010 and July 2011 and interview data are based on a small subgroup of US airline pilots who self-selected to participate in the study. Therefore, findings are not unbiased and may not be generalizable across all airlines’ pilot workgroups. Practical implications Considerable research has been conducted identifying the policy and practice changes that employers need to adopt to retain older workers. However, few studies consider the psychological impact of these age-related workplace changes on employees or the organizational psychodynamics they might trigger. Originality/value This paper makes two main contributions. First, through use of the psychoanalytic construct of the Oedipus complex, the paper sheds light on some of the psychodynamic consequences of age-related policy changes. Second, it challenges assumptions about workforce aging and the underlying causes of intergenerational conflict, highlighting ways that policy changes intended to eradicate discrimination against older workers can result in age discrimination against younger employees.

Abstract:
Keratoconus is a bilateral, progressive corneal disease affecting all ethnic groups around the world. It is one of the major ocular problems with significant social impacts as the disease affects young generation, and is the leading cause of corneal transplantation. Although keratoconus is associated with genetic and environmental factors, its precise etiology is not yet established. Results from complex segregation analysis and patterns of gene expression show that genetic abnormalities may play an essential role in the susceptibility to keratoconus. There is a strong association between the polymorphism of a number of genes and corneal curvature. These polymorphisms explain only a small percentage of keratoconus cases, so genetic influences on keratoconus are most likely complex and varied. The aim of this review is to briefly provide the current knowledge on the genetic keratoconus basis - to understand the disease pathogenesis.

Abstract:
Taking into consideration the complexity of animal cruelty, problems with its varying definitions which depend on legal frameworks, social norms, cultural and public perceptions and many possible approaches to the issue of animal cruelty, this paper will focus only on active cruelty (acts of commission), i.e. the intention to harm an animal and cause pain and suffering. It will study the phenomenon as a multi-indicator for violence. Regardless of whether animal abuse is treated as a criminal offence or a misdemeanor or if it is absent from the legal framework altogether, it represents a complex phenomenon present in both children and adults. This abuse affects families and a wide range of social institutions, not only harming animals but also indicating various inter-personal types of violence and individual behavioral disorders. This paper explores intersectional and interdisciplinary research on animal abuse, its connection to subsequent adult or concurrent domestic violence and child abuse, contributing factors such as defense mechanisms and the roles of empathy and remorse. Understanding animal cruelty as a part of human violence and as a sign of serious concern for the welfare of both animals and humans is a first step towards building sustainable social policies.

Abstract:
This study aims at analysing the elements by means of which Eugene O'Neill, in his trilogy Mourning Becomes Electra, departs from the classical versions of the Electra myth and presents a modern, original elaboration of that Stoff. Freud's theory of instincts and of the Oedipus complex, as well as specific ideological aspects of American culture, are also discussed, since they influence characterization and function as the base for the action. It is demonstrated how the play is structured on the principle of polarity, which underlies setting, imagery, and characters' portrayal. The role of psychological fate in the trilogy is examined, as it limits the individual freedom of the characters and leads to their alienation and self-destruction. Finally, taking as support Hegel's and Max Scheler's views on the tragic, the question of genre definition is focused on. It is concluded that O'Neill's characters are not tragic heroes, but rather embody traits of contemporary self-doubt, rebellion, and fragmentation. The dark view of life projected in the play is discussed, since the outcome reveals that on an individual or historical level, there is no solution for human conflict.

AbstractThe care of chronically unconscious patients raises vexing medical, ethical, and social questions concerning diagnosis, prognosis, communication with family members, and decision making, including the withdrawal of life support. We provide updates on major controversies surrounding disorders of consciousness. Issues such as withdrawal of artificial nutrition and hydration – which had been considered “settled” by many in the medical, legal and ethical communities – have resurfaced under the pressure of social groups and religious authorities. Some assumptions about the level of awareness and the prognosis of vegetative state and minimal conscious patients are questioned by advances in clinical care because of insights produced by neuroscience research techniques, particularly functional neuroimaging. Both the clinical and neuroscience dimensions of disorders of consciousness raise complex issues such as resource allocation and high levels of diagnostic inaccuracies (at least, for the vegetative state). We conclude by highlighting areas needing further research and collaboration.

Abstract:
Childbirth represents a specific meeting point between nature and culture: it is a biological event in which the main actors are social beings, a natural process which has been given a special cultural status through the process of scientific-technological translation. The complex nature of childbirth also raises twofold challenge to woman in labour. On the one hand, the flow of dramatic bodily changes that is mostly beyond her control represents a threat to her embodied subjectivity. On the other hand, the fact that labour is turned into an object of medical knowledge, practices and techniques in contemporary society usually implies its reduction to medically guided physiological process that does not rely on women?s subjective involvement in any relevant way. This brings up the question of whether a woman manages to be the subject of a process that is happening to her and that is primarily technologically mediated and externally regulated? I will think of the birth experience as a complex process which relies on the interaction between the constantly changing embodied experience and medical knowledge and techniques that woman is subjected to. Based on the analysis of the birth narratives, I?ll try to follow the flow of this experience and numerous changes that women as subject is going through in local obstetrical context which bears a number of institutional specificities.

Abstract:
Abstract Climate adaptation research often ignores the broader socio-cultural human sphere within which climate change takes place. Dominant viewpoints on climate adaptation derive from the biophysical world that often excludes social, economic, and political contexts that also connect to biophysical changes. Hybrid methodological mixed methods approaches to climate adaptation provide paradigmatically different questions. This perspective is useful for identifying socio-cultural aspects of climatic adaptation. To demonstrate the power of a hybrid approach for interconnecting human and non-human factors implicated in climate adaptation, we deploy an in-depth case study of N. Benin, West African farmers who increasingly must configure their farming methods to tackle erratic changes in weather. The case study examines the role gender dynamics play in climate adaptation that found few gender differences in the ways male and female farmers perceive the biophysical aspects of climate adaptation on their subsistence farming lifestyle from their initial village climate survey. However, the qualitative components of their study uncovered significant gender differences in socio-cultural adaptation challenges, vulnerabilities, and future lifestyle opportunities. We discuss the transformative policy implications about ignoring gender difference and the importance of taking an intersectional approach to variation in climate adaptation policy making.
