Abstract:
Long-term variability of the cold subsurface water (CSW) in the Okhotsk Sea is analyzed on the base of all available oceanographic data collected in March through August of 1946-2015 (total 65,742 stations). The Integral Heat Content (IHC) is calculated for each station and average annual IHC anomalies of the cold subsurface water are determined by month and by 2-degree grid. The IHC anomaly series are analyzed using the EOF analysis. Cycles with period of approximately 30 years are revealed in the variations of the subsurface layer heat content. Thus, in the 1946-1950, its temperature decreased, but it grew since 2009-2010 to 2015. The warming of CSW was also observed in the 1951-1964 and 1978-1994, while the cooling was in the 1965-1977 and 1995-2008. Based on this criterion, the CSW thermal condition in certain years is classified as «extremely cold» in 2001, as «cold» in 1949, 1950, 1951, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1999, 2000, 2010, 2012, as «normal» in 1946, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1961, 1962, 1965, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, as «warm» in 1948, 1956, 1964, 1968, 1974, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1997, 2015, and as «extremely warm» in 1963. Statistically significant correlation is found between changes of the CSW thermal conditions and long-term variations of atmosphere and ocean climate indices, as well as local patterns of the atmosphere-ice-ocean interaction in the Okhotsk Sea and adjacent onshore and offshore areas of Asia and the Pacific Ocean.

Abstract:
The field of developmental psychopathology has grown rapidly over the past several decades and research conducted within this framework has made substantial contributions to our understanding of human adaptation and maladaptation (Cicchetti & Cohen, 1995a, 1995b; Cicchetti & Richters, 1997; Cicchetti & Toth, 1998a). Influenced by the theoretical expositions of several prominent developmentalists, including Jay Belsky (1984), Uri Bronfenbrenner (1979), Robert Emde (1994), Donald Ford and Richard Lerner (1992), Michael Lewis (1997), Patricia Minuchin (1985), Arnold Sameroff (1983; Sameroff & Emde, 1989), Alan Sroufe (Sroufe, Egeland, & Kreutzer, 1990), and Esther Thelen and Linda Smith (1994), theorists have called attention to the importance of viewing the development of psychopathology within a continuously unfolding, dynamic, and ever changing context (see, for example, Belsky, 1993; Cicchetti & Aber, 1986; Cicchetti & Lynch, 1993; Cicchetti & Toth, 1998b; Coie & Jacobs, 1993; Jensen & Hoagwood, 1997; Richters & Cicchetti, 1993; Susman, 1993). Moreover, we now know that social contexts exert effects not only on psychological processes but also on biological structures and processes (Boyce, Frank, Jensen, Kessler, Nelson, Steinberg, et al., 1998; Cicchetti & Tucker, 1994; Eisenberg, 1995; Nelson & Bloom, 1997).

Abstract:
Soluble carbohydrates are the major nutritional reward in the pulp of most vertebrate dispersed fruits (Corlett 1996, Herrera 1987, Johnson et al. 1985, Jordano 1995). However, although detailed analyses have been made of the carbohydrate content of many cumtivated fruits (e.g. Nagy et al. 1990, Widdowson & McCance 1935), most studies of wild fruits have only quantified total soluble carbohydrates (e.g. Conklin & Wrangham 1994, Corlett 1996, Foster & McDiarmid 1983, Herrera 1987, Izhaki 1992). This is unfortunate because relatively minor differences in the chemical structure of nutrients can have profound implications for frugivorous animals (Martinez del Rio & Restrepo 1993), and the fruit choices of these animals in turn, may have major implications for the abundance and distribution of the plant species.

The knowledge of age and spatial distribution of stars in the Galactic bulge require observational constraints to establish whether its stellar population is very old (Larson 1990) or is a younger, disk-like component (Raha et al. 1992), and if its shape is spherical or extended, or perhaps a bar (Blitz & Spergel 1991). Yet other possibilities are a flattened bulge or a disk-like system (Zinn 1985; Armandroff 1989; Ortolani et al. 1993; Minniti 1995).

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
To assess the effect of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) invasion on benthic animal communities, we monitored the macrozoobenthos at eight sites in the freshwater tidal Hudson River in 1990-1995. Zebra mussels were absent or scarce in the Hudson River before September 1992, but abundant (mean 17 000/m2) on hard substrata in 1993-1995 and responsible for large declines in phytoplankton biomass. All of our monitoring stations had soft sediments, and so had low local densities of zebra mussels (mean 78/m2). Nevertheless, we observed marked changes in the macrozoobenthos at these stations. Sphaeriid clams declined by 67% between 1990-1992 and 1993-1995, but no other group of macrobenthos showed a simple change in density between 1990-1992 and 1993-1995 across all eight monitoring sites. Instead, most taxa showed a strong interaction between zebra mussel impacts and water depth. At deep-water sites, macrozoobenthic density declined by 33% between 1990-1992 and 1993-1995, while at shallow-water sites, density rose by 25%. We suggest that these changes were probably caused by reduced sedimentation of edible particles at deep-water sites combined with increased biomass of macrophytes and attached algae at shallow-water sites.

These years were after the implementation of Real Plan, where the Brazilian economy, after 20 years of high inflation, finally reached its stability. This inflation stability did not come with a fiscal balance, so the public sector borrowing requirements were the main cause from Brazilian external vulnerability. We showed thought a model of public debt management, that despite the inflation stability, Brazil did not change the maturing average of Brazilian bonds and these bonds had the same portfolio of the inflation period, basically pos-fixed bonds.

The fundamental questions of whether and how information technology (IT) contributes to firm performance have been answered in different ways. IT value research findings have been equivocal, with some studies finding negative performance impacts (Berndt &amp; Morrison, 1995; Johansen, Karmarkar, Nanda &amp; Seidmann, 1996), some finding no overall effect (Barua, Kriebel &amp; Mukhopadhyay, 1995; Dos Santos, Peffers &amp; Mauer, 1993; Loveman, 1994; Strassman, 1985, 1990), and some finding positive impacts (Brynjolfsson &amp; Hitt, 1996; Brynjolfsson &amp; Yang, 1997; Hitt &amp; Brynjolfsson, 1996; Mukhopadhyay, Kekre &amp; Kalathur, 1995).

Abstract:
The concept of strategic alignment is more than two decades old (McLean and Soden, 1977; IBM, 1981; Earl, 1983; Mills, 1986; Brancheau and Wetherbe, 1987; Parker and Benson, 1988; Henderson and Venkatraman, 1990; Dixon and John, 1991; Niederman, et. al., 1991; Watson and Brancheau, 1991; Liebs, 1992; Luftman, Lewis and Oldach, 1993; Goff, 1993), however it has never been more timely than in today’s fast-paced, dynamic business environment (Papp, 1998; Rogers, 1997). The original alignment model was a largely theoretical construct that studied only a single industry (Henderson &amp; Venkatraman, 1990; Henderson &amp; Thomas, 1992) but has since been adapted for use by virtually any industry looking to integrate their business strategies with their information technology strategies (Papp, 1995; Luftman, Papp, &amp; Brier, 1995).

Abstract:
From the standpoint of the 1990s, the twentieth century seems to have ended on especially depressing notes. Run through the catalogue of tragedy: the hopeful Oslo Accords go dead with the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin (1995); Serbian-Slovenian War (1991); Serbian-Croatian War (1991–1995); Bosnian War (1992–1996); first Congo War (1996–1997); Great War of Africa (1998–2003), where 6 million were killed; and the Kosovo War (1998–1999). Their driving force was nationalism, undoubtedly, some found themselves the key. For Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma (Myanmar) her choice in the three-tiered political identity was the nation for which she gave up her family and all the global ideals in the beginning of her career: human rights, democracy, and individual freedom.

Abstract:
Anyone who stood on the bridge over the Río Guacimal at Monteverde on a wet-season night in the early 1980s would understand Archie Carr’s sentiments. Nearly 300 male Fleischmann’s Glass Frogs (Hyalinobatrachium fleischmanni) defended territories along a 120-m section of the stream, and their loud, incessant “peeps” filled the air. In the late 1980s, however, this chorus all but fell silent as the number of glass frogs plummeted. The population has not recovered. In 1998, only a single male could be heard from the bridge. The dramatic reduction in glass frogs was part of a larger decline of Monteverde’s amphibians. A sudden crash of populations in 1987 affected species throughout the area and led to the disappearance of many (Pounds 1990, 1991a, 1997, Crump et al. 1992, Pounds and Crump 1994, Pounds and Fogden 1996, Pounds et al. 1997). The disappearance that has drawn the most attention, however, is that of the Golden Toad (Bufo periglenes). This species, known only from elfin cloud forest high on the ridgetops at Monteverde, is famous for its striking appearance and the colorful spectacle of its breeding congregations (Savage 1966, Jacobson 1983, Fogden and Fogden 1984, Jacobson and Vandenberg 1991; see Savage, “Discovery of the Golden Toad,”. Because the Golden Toad had been locally abundant in seemingly undisturbed habitats for at least 17 consecutive years, its sudden disappearance caused great alarm and dismay (Pounds et al. 1997). Interest in this case has intensified with the suggestion that it is part of a global pattern (Barinaga 1990, Blaustein and Wake 1990, 1995, Phillips 1990, 1994, Wyman 1990, Wake 1991, Wake and Morowitz 1991, Sarkar 1996; see Pounds, “Monteverde Salamanders,”). Many similar declines and disappearances have been reported for highland areas of other continents (Corn and Fogleman 1984, Heyer et al. 1988, Osborne 1989, Weygoldt 1989, Czechura and Ingram 1990, La Marca and Reinthaler 1991, Carey 1993, Fellers and Drost 1993, Kagarise Sherman and Morton 1993, Drost and Fellers 1996, Laurance et al.

Abstract:
The study of biodiversity has received wide attention in recent decades. Biodiversity has been defined in various ways (Gaston and Spicer, 1998, Purvis and Hector 2000, and chapters in this volume). Discussion regarding its definitions is dynamic, with shifts between the more traditional emphasis on community structure to emphasis on the higher ecosystem level or the lower population levels (e.g., chapters in this volume, Poiani et al. 2000). One of the definitions, proposed in the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity held in Rio de Janeiro (1992) is “the diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.” The within-species component of diversity is further defined as “the frequency and diversity of different genes and/or genomes . . .” (IUCN 1993) as estimated by the genetic and morphological diversity within species. While research and conservation efforts in the past century have focused mainly on the community level, they have recently been extended to include the within-species (Hanski 1989) and the ecosystem levels. The component comprising within-species genetic and morphological diversity is increasingly emphasized as an important element of biodiversity (UN Convention 1992). Recent studies suggest that patterns of genetic diversity significantly influence the viability and persistence of local populations (Frankham 1996, Lacy 1997, Riddle 1996, Vrijenhoek et al. 1985). Revealing geographical patterns of genetic diversity is highly relevant to conservation biology and especially to explicit decision-making procedures allowing systematic rather than opportunistic selection of populations and areas for in situ protection (Pressey et al. 1993). Therefore, studying spatial patterns in within-species diversity may be vital in defining and prioritizing conservation efforts (Brooks et al. 1992). Local populations of a species often differ in the ecological conditions experienced by their members (Brown 1984, Gaston 1990, Lawton et al. 1994). These factors potentially affect population characteristics, structure, and within-population genetic and morphological diversity (Brussard 1984, Lawton 1995, Parsons 1991). The spatial location of a population within a species range may be related to its patterns of diversity (Lesica and Allendorf 1995). Thus, detecting within-species diversity patterns across distributional ranges is important for our understanding of ecological and evolutionary (e.g., speciation) processes (Smith et al. 1997), and for the determination of conservation priorities (Kark 1999).

Abstract:
Arid and semiarid ecosystems (drylands) often contain a higher diversity of animals and plants than would be expected from their low productivity. High spatial heterogeneity of resources and physical habitats, exhibited at a wide range of spatial scales (Rundel 1996, Holling 1992, Peterson et al. 1998), may be a major factor explaining such high diversity. For example, at extremely small scales (&lt;10 cm), branched plant material and various soil physical processes can create spatial niches for invertebrates, cyanobacteria, and other cryptogamic organisms (Lightfoot and Whitford 1991). At somewhat larger scales (&lt;10 m), desert shrubs may aggregate water and organic material in “islands of fertility,” yielding a highly patchy heterogeneous distribution of resources (e.g., seeds, water) for other plants and animals (Gibbens and Beck 1988, Halvorson et al. 1997, chapter 13 this volume, chapter 11 this volume). At even larger scales (&gt;100 m), soil erosion patterns create topographic variation that locally concentrates available water and nutrients, yielding a marked heterogeneity in the distribution of productivity across the landscape (Milne 1992). These heterogeneous distributions of physical environments, biotic material, and resources are likely to have strong effects on biodiversity. Ecologists have long associated greater spatial heterogeneity with higher species diversity (MacArthur 1964; Brown 1981; May 1988). Within a particular physical environment (habitat), this association exists presumably because collections of species that use similar resources, or “guilds,” can coexist whenever they can more finely divide up space and different-sized resource “packages” (Hutchinson and MacArthur 1959, Brown 1981, 1995, Morse et al. 1985, Peterson et al. 1998). The partitioning of space and different resource patches may be constrained by the different body sizes of species within guilds (Hutchinson and MacArthur 1959, Morse et al. 1985, Belovsky 1986, 1997, Brown 1995, Siemann et al. 1996). However, the mechanism by which body size and spatial heterogeneity of habitats and resources determine species diversity remains unclear (May 1988, Brown 1995, Siemann et al. 1996, Belovsky 1997). Resource partitioning and spatial heterogeneity therefore may strongly influence diversity in drylands, where, for example, well-known guilds of granivorous vertebrates and invertebrates are structured by competition for different sizes of seeds and seed patches (Brown et al. 1979, Davidson et al. 1980, 1985).

Abstract:
Throughout his voluminous writings, Marx insisted on the notion of capitalism as a turbulent scene of production and exchange, gripped by the forces of competition in an endless process of self-transformation. In these circumstances, every firm faces a stark choice between the continual need to upgrade its process and product configurations or eventually going out of business. The result is what Schumpeter (1942), in an explicit invocation of Marx, called ‘creative destruction’, that is, the periodic abandonment of old equipment, production methods, and product designs in favour of newer and more economically performative assets. At the same time, as both Marx and Schumpeter recognized, creative destruction is inscribed within an ever-expanding sphere of economic activity due to the growth of existing firms, the extension of entrepreneurship, and the appearance of new products on final markets. Capitalism, in brief, is a complex Weld of forces spurring constant qualitative and quantitative readjustments across all its multiple dimensions of operation (cf. Baumol 2002). Sometimes these readjustments are of cataclysmic proportions, as when steam replaced water-power in the nineteenth century; more often than not, as Rosenberg (1982) points out, they take the form of small, incremental steps, many of which may be minuscule, but which collectively produce the incessant instability descried by Marx and Schumpeter. Of late years, there has been a considerable outpouring of literature devoted to these themes, much of it partaking of institutionalist and evolutionary economic theory (e.g. Archibugi et al. 1999; Arthur 1990; David 1985; Edquist 1997; Foray and Lundvall 1996; Freeman 1995; Lundvall and Johnson 1994; Nelson 1993; Von Hippel 1988). An important aspect of this literature is the emphasis that much of it assigns to geography—and above all to the region—as an active force in moulding industrial performance qua new firm formation, learning, invention, and growth (cf. Acs et al. 2002; Antonelli 2003; Audretsch and Feldman 1996; Cooke and Morgan 1998; Feldman 1994; Howells 1999; Maskell and Malmberg 1999; Oinas and Malecki 1999; Simmie 2003; Storper 1995).

Abstract:
The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is critically involved in cognitive processes underlying working memory (WM), attention, and inhibition of responses to non-relevant stimuli (Fuster, 2000; Goldman-Rakic, 1996). In this context, catecholaminergic inputs have proven to be critical for the regulation of these cognitive processes (Levitt et al., 1984; Lewis et al., 1987; Lewis and Morrison, 1989; Porrino and Goldman-Rakic, 1982). Aston-Jones and Bloom (1981a, b) showed that, in addition to dopamine (DA) the norepinephrine (NE) neurons located in the locus coeruleus (LC) and terminating in the PFC are important in mediating selective and sustained attention and vigilance. Moreover, stimulation of the LC increases the discrimination of incoming external stimuli to the PFC by reducing the background noise, therefore enhancing the cortical signal-to-noise ratio (Aston-Jones et al., 1985; Berridge and Waterhouse, 2003; Foote et al., 1980, 1983; Waterhouse et al., 1980; Robbins, 2000). More recently, several studies have shown that adrenergic agonists, especially specific alpha-2 agonists, are very effective in enhancing WM and attention. Indeed, administration of alpha-2 agonists can ameliorate some of the negative effects on cognition produced by NE depletion due to aging in monkeys (Arnsten and Goldman-Rakic, 1985; Arnsten et al., 1988; Arnsten and Leslie, 1991) and improve performance in WM-related tasks in young monkeys with NE depletion (Arnsten and Goldman-Rakic, 1985; Cai et al., 1993). Moreover, the therapeutic effects of the specific alpha-2 agonists, clonidine and guanfacine in treating disorders related to dysfunction of WM in patients have been proved (Fields et al., 1988; Mair and McEntree 1986, 1988; Hunt et al., 1985, 1990, 1995).

Abstract:
Enbridge Pipelines Inc. operates the world’s longest and most complex liquids pipeline network. As part of Enbridge’s Integrity Management Program In-Line Inspections have been and will continue to be conducted on more than 15,000 km of pipeline. This extensive program is comprised of a mature metal loss and geometry inspection component as well as a crack inspection program utilizing the most sophisticated In-Line Inspection (ILI) tools available. Enbridge conducted its first ultrasonic crack inspection with the British Gas Elastic Wave Vehicle (Now GE Power Systems – Oil &amp; Gas – PII Pipeline Solutions) in September 1993 on a Canadian portion of it’s 864–mm (34”) diameter line. The Elastic Wave Vehicle was also used for crack detection on additional segments of this same 864–mm (34”) diameter line during the following years, 1994, 1995 and 1996. Enbridge then conducted its first crack inspection with the Pipetronix UltraScan CD tool (Now also GE Power Systems – Oil &amp; Gas – PII Pipeline Solutions) in November 1997 on a segment of this 864–mm (34”) diameter line that was previously inspected with the Elastic Wave Vehicle. The UltraScan CD tool was then utilized again in 1999, 2000 and 2001 completing crack inspection of the Canadian portion of this 864–mm (34”) diameter line. Enbridge conducted its first magnetic crack inspection with the PII TranScan (TFI) Circumferential Magnetic inspection tool in December 1998 on a United States portion of another 864–mm (34”) diameter line. This same section of line was subsequently inspected with the PII UltraScan CD tool in July 2001. This paper discusses the comparison of results from overlapping crack inspection data analysis from these three PII crack detection tools. Specifically, the overlap of the UltraScan CD and Elastic Wave Vehicle along with the overlap of the UltraScan CD and TranScan (TFI) tool. The relative performance of each crack detection tool will be explored and conclusions drawn.

Abstract:
U prva dva poglavlja ovoga rada autorica je hronološkim slijedom pratila bitne događaje u Srebrenici 1992‒1995. godine i interpretirala njihovu obrađenost u historiografiji i objavljenim historijskim izvorima.
