Abstract:
Long-term variability of the cold subsurface water (CSW) in the Okhotsk Sea is analyzed on the base of all available oceanographic data collected in March through August of 1946-2015 (total 65,742 stations). The Integral Heat Content (IHC) is calculated for each station and average annual IHC anomalies of the cold subsurface water are determined by month and by 2-degree grid. The IHC anomaly series are analyzed using the EOF analysis. Cycles with period of approximately 30 years are revealed in the variations of the subsurface layer heat content. Thus, in the 1946-1950, its temperature decreased, but it grew since 2009-2010 to 2015. The warming of CSW was also observed in the 1951-1964 and 1978-1994, while the cooling was in the 1965-1977 and 1995-2008. Based on this criterion, the CSW thermal condition in certain years is classified as «extremely cold» in 2001, as «cold» in 1949, 1950, 1951, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1999, 2000, 2010, 2012, as «normal» in 1946, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1961, 1962, 1965, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, as «warm» in 1948, 1956, 1964, 1968, 1974, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1997, 2015, and as «extremely warm» in 1963. Statistically significant correlation is found between changes of the CSW thermal conditions and long-term variations of atmosphere and ocean climate indices, as well as local patterns of the atmosphere-ice-ocean interaction in the Okhotsk Sea and adjacent onshore and offshore areas of Asia and the Pacific Ocean.

Abstract:
Many Paleontologists share the opinion of McGhee (1996), who wrote “Prior to the Devonian, there was no terrestrial ecosystem to speak of. Some primitive plants precariously establishing a beachhead in protected coastal areas was about it. The interiors of the continents of the planet Earth were as barren as the rocky landscapes of Mars.” Thus, it was with trepidation that I reported paleosols containing trace fossils of early land animals in the late Ordovician, Juniata Formation, of Pennsylvania (Retallack and Feakes, 1987; Retallack, 1992a, 1992b, 1993). My late colleague, Jane Gray, engendered considerable debate by reporting Ordovician and Early Silurian spores like those of liverworts (Gray and Boucot, 1977; Gray, 1985). This spore, trace fossil and paleosol evidence for life on land in the Ordovician has remained controversial (Buatois et al., 1998; Shear, 1998), but evidence for Ordovician life on land has continued to accumulate. Especially important was discovery of myriapod trackways from mid-Ordovician (Llandeilian-Caradocian) Borrowdale Volcanics of the Lake District, England (Johnson et al., 1994). Abundant arthropod burrows and tracks, and a single body fossil of an euthycarcinoid in the fluvial-eolian Tumblagooda Sandstone of Western Australia (White 1990; McNamara and Trewin, 1993; Trewin and McNamara, 1995) are now thought to be late Ordovician in age (Iaksy et al., 1998). An enigmatic assemblage of arthropods and plants from a mid-Ordovician paleokarst in Tennessee (Caster and Brooks, 1956) is now thought to have been lacustrine (Gray, 1988a). The fossil record of Ordovician land plants also has improved with the discovery of possible megafossil mosses (Snigirevskaya et al. 1992), and possible late Ordovician trilete spores (Nøhr-Hansen and Koppelhus, 1998; Richardson 1988; Strother, 1991; Strother et al., 1996). But the most abundant evidence for Ordovician life on land remains fossil soils, now exploited by increasingly thorough and sophisticated studies (Retallack, 1985, 1992a, 1992b, 1993; Feakes et al., 1989; Driese and Foreman 1991, 1992a, 1992b; Driese et al., 1992, 1997; Mora et al., 1991, 1996; Mora and Driese, 1993; Yapp and Poths, 1992, 1994, 1996; Yapp, 1993, 1996). Mounting evidence from fossils and paleosols now presents an increasingly detailed view of Ordovician ecosystems on land.

Abstract:
The field of developmental psychopathology has grown rapidly over the past several decades and research conducted within this framework has made substantial contributions to our understanding of human adaptation and maladaptation (Cicchetti & Cohen, 1995a, 1995b; Cicchetti & Richters, 1997; Cicchetti & Toth, 1998a). Influenced by the theoretical expositions of several prominent developmentalists, including Jay Belsky (1984), Uri Bronfenbrenner (1979), Robert Emde (1994), Donald Ford and Richard Lerner (1992), Michael Lewis (1997), Patricia Minuchin (1985), Arnold Sameroff (1983; Sameroff & Emde, 1989), Alan Sroufe (Sroufe, Egeland, & Kreutzer, 1990), and Esther Thelen and Linda Smith (1994), theorists have called attention to the importance of viewing the development of psychopathology within a continuously unfolding, dynamic, and ever changing context (see, for example, Belsky, 1993; Cicchetti & Aber, 1986; Cicchetti & Lynch, 1993; Cicchetti & Toth, 1998b; Coie & Jacobs, 1993; Jensen & Hoagwood, 1997; Richters & Cicchetti, 1993; Susman, 1993). Moreover, we now know that social contexts exert effects not only on psychological processes but also on biological structures and processes (Boyce, Frank, Jensen, Kessler, Nelson, Steinberg, et al., 1998; Cicchetti & Tucker, 1994; Eisenberg, 1995; Nelson & Bloom, 1997).

Abstract:
Survival and return of unharvested winter-run steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) at the Keogh River, British Columbia, declined abruptly and remained persistently low after 1990. Adult returns averaged 1168 fish from 1976 to 1990 but were significantly lower from 1991 to 1998 (mean 223). Forty wild females returned to the 35-km river in 1995-1996, 20 in 1996-1997, and <10 in 1997-1998. The positive linear relationship between smolts and returns was significantly lower after 1990 and no longer correlated with smolt size. Smolt-to-adult survival averaged 15% (1976 to 1989) but recently averaged 3.5% (1990 to 1995). Smolt number steadily declined to <1000 by 1998 from an average annual count of 7000. Smolts per spawner from 1991 to 1994 were, on average, 70% lower than previous estimates based on the same spawner abundance. Recruitment scenarios based on survival histories during freshwater and marine life stages indicated that adult recruits are currently below replacement and unsustainable if conditions continue or worsen. Factors influencing steelhead in the ocean and freshwater are likely similar for other salmonids; harvest impacts must be reduced and appropriate stock rebuilding measures implemented.

Abstract:
Language teacher education programs are likely to be housed in departments of applied linguistics, education, or languages and literature: These three disciplines provide the knowledge base and opportunities for developing skills and dispositions for both prospective and experienced teachers. Until recently, applied linguistics (psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, language description, and language teaching and testing methodology) formed the core of language teacher education, not unexpected, since language teaching has historically been the primary focus of applied linguistics (Bardovi-Harlig and Hartford 1997, Crandall 1995; 1996). However, during the last decade, general educational theory and practice have exerted a much more powerful influence on the direction of the education of both preservice and inservice language teacher education, resulting in a greater focus on: 1) practical experiences such as observations, practice teaching, and opportunities for curriculum and materials development (Crandall 1994, Johnson 1996b, Pennington 1990, Richards 1990, Richards and Crookes 1988); 2) classroom-centered or teacher research (Allwright and Bailey 1991, Chaudron 1988, Edge and Richards 1993, Nunan 1989, van Lier 1988); and 3) teacher beliefs and teacher cognition in language teacher education (Freeman 1996; 1998, Freeman and Johnson 1998a, Richards and Nunan 1990). In fact, the last decade can be viewed as a search for a theory of language teaching and, by extension, of language teacher education at both the micro and macro levels (Freeman and Johnson 1998b, Johnson 1996a, Larsen-Freeman 1990, Richards 1990). Language teacher education is a microcosm of teacher education, and many of the trends in current language teacher education derive from theory and practice in general teacher education. These trends include at least four major shifts.

Abstract:
AbstractObjective:To determine the magnitude of van-comycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in three counties in the San Francisco Bay area.Design:Active laboratory-based surveillance for VRE from January 1995 through December 1996 and a laboratory-based and hospital-based questionnaire survey for 1993 to 1994 and 1997 to 1998.Setting:All 33 general acute care hospitals in three counties in the San Francisco Bay area.Participants:Laboratories and infection control professionals serving these hospitals, and staff of the California Emerging Infections Program. Results:The number of hospitals reporting 1 or more patient clinical VRE isolates was 1 (3%) in 1993, 7 (21%) in 1994, 31 (94%) in 1995, and 33 (100%) in 1996 to 1998. The number of patient isolates increased from 1 in 1993 to 24 in 1994, 176 in 1995,429 in 1996, 730 in 1997, and 864 in 1998. Most VRE isolates in 1995 and 1996 were from urine and were not associated with serious clinical disease. However, the number of isolates from blood increased from 9 (6% of total) in 1995 to 44 (12% of the total) in 1996, 90 (14%) in 1997, and 100 (13%) in 1998.Conclusions:Our data document the rapid emergence and increase of VRE in all hospitals in three counties in the San Francisco Bay area during 1994 to 1998. Infection control measures for VRE together with antibiotic utilization programs should be implemented to limit further spread.

Abstract:
COUNTRIES RIVEN BY INTERNAL CONFLICT HAVE INCREASINGLY SOUGHT to resolve their conf licts and establish stable government by conducting elections, which outside observers can verify as ‘free and fair’. The first highly successful such venture, in Nicaragua 1990, was followed by election operations by the UN in Ethiopia 1992, Angola 1992, El Salvador 1994, Mozambique 1994, South Africa 1994, Haiti 1995, Liberia 1997 and Cambodia 1993 and 1998. The degree of stability and reconciliation achieved by these operations has varied, but the recent election observer effort, in Cambodia (26 July 1998), had a disputed outcome, which raised fundamental questions concerning the efficacy of post-conf lict election monitoring.

Abstract:
To assess the antimicrobial resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated from 1993 through 1998 in Japan, susceptibility testing was conducted on 502 isolates. Selected isolates were characterized by auxotype and analysis for mutations within the quinolone resistance-determining region (QRDR) in the gyrAand parC genes, which confer fluoroquinolone resistance on the organism. Plasmid-mediated penicillin resistance (penicillinase-producing N. gonorrhoeae) decreased significantly from 1993–1994 (7.9%) to 1997–1998 (2.0%). Chromosomally mediated penicillin resistance decreased from 1993–1994 (12.6%) to 1995–1996 (1.9%) and then increased in 1997–1998 (10.7%). Chromosomally mediated tetracycline resistance decreased from 1993–1994 (3.3%) to 1997–1998 (2.0%), and no plasmid-mediated high-level tetracycline resistance was found. Isolates with ciprofloxacin resistance (MIC ≥ 1 μg/ml) increased significantly from 1993–1994 (6.6%) to 1997–1998 (24.4%). The proline-requiring isolates were less susceptible to ciprofloxacin than the prototrophic or arginine-requiring isolates. Ciprofloxacin-resistant isolates contained three or four amino acid substitutions within the QRDR in the GyrA and ParC proteins.

Abstract:
Perennial ryegrass germplasm was quicker to establish plot cover on a "Tifgreen" bermudagrass green than that of Poa trivialis when used alone. Poa trivialis alone produced lighter color turfs when compared to perennial ryegrass. Turfgrass color was generally uniform in appearance, however, within each entry. Therefore, color as a selection criteria is a matter of choice by the user. The turfgrass mixture "Catalina/Winterplay" (80% perennial ryegrass/20% Poa trivialis) was intermediate in turfgrass color. "Brightstar II" PR generally produced a dark turf throughout the growing season. For overall turfgrass quality, the perennial ryegrasses generally out performed the Poa trivialis germplasm. The mixture of "Catalina/Winterplay" produced a very dense turf, followed closely by "Turfstar Plus" PR, "95-1" PR and "PT-4" PT. ASnowbird@ PT had the least amount of living ground cover by May 31, which is desirable from a transition standpoint.

Abstract:
Aims There are four very broad aims to the thesis. To assess whether new dimensions of democracy are emerging The first aim is to ascertain whether and in what senses new dimensions of democracy are emerging in Estonia. To explore whether there is a democratic shortfall The second aims is to consider the expectations of democracy both of the non-elite and elite groups, and to compare these with democratic reality. To assess the development of a 'new' democracy The third aim is to assess the development of a 'new' democracy. Estonia is a restored democracy. To challenge the ideas concerning previous democratic experience The fourth aim is to ascertain whether the 'restorationist principle' (Smith 1995) has been an assistance or a hindrance to democratic stability. Methods I attempt to create a comprehensive model from which to carry out a democratic 'audit' of Estonia. Established democratic experiences and Estonian democratic experience will be used in determining benchmarks Le. prerequisites and indicators for an analytical model from which to consider the re-established democracy in Estonia. This analytical model will help to identify certain characteristics of representative or pluralist democracy and its support systems, for instance historical background and political culture. Indicators are used, such as the level of trust or distrust of politicians. Indicators are open to many different interpretations, for example, why people do not vote in elections. These benchmarks and indicators facilitate a systematic comparative analysis and will help to establish more precisely the character and potential stability of the democracy that is emerging in Estonia. Questionnaires and interviews are used Literature review A variety of literature has been used for this research, the main ones are concerned with theory, in the form of up-to-date hooks and articles, post communist study, in the form of hooks, journals and websites and Estonia, in the form of journals, surveys and in particular, websites. Contribution to knowledge This study identifies gaps in knowledge and thus attempts to fill them. Estonia is a largely neglected country in the field of post communist study and this thesis aims to bridge some of these gaps. Generally, this thesis will contribute to the understanding of democracy, in particular stable democracy. It will challenge current understanding of stable democracy. It will examine whether a restored democracy is any more stable than a 'new' democracy - in particular whether a prior recent experience of democracy is an assistance or hindrance to democratic stability. It will contribute to the knowledge and understanding of the experience of post- Soviet Russians living outside Russia, including the perspectives of the Soviet Russian immigrant community in Estonia. By employing Ute concept of political stability it will be possible to assess whether Estonia was more stable as an authoritarian regime. From a more general perspective it may be possible to hypothesise about post communist democratic development. It could point to further lines of enquiry.

The main target of this study is to discuss about the Brazilian public debt , specially focusing the period between 1995 and 1998. These years were after the implementation of Real Plan, where the Brazilian economy, after 20 years of high inflation, finally reached its stability. This inflation stability did not come with a fiscal balance, so the public sector borrowing requirements were the main cause from Brazilian external vulnerability. We showed thought a model of public debt management, that despite the inflation stability, Brazil did not change the maturing average of Brazilian bonds and these bonds had the same portfolio of the inflation period, basically pos-fixed bonds. As a conclusion , we noticed that Brazilian external vulnerability was a consequence of its economics polices, decided during Real Plan, as high interest rates whose target was to defend the fixed exchange rate against a confidence crisis

The diploma thesis analyzes the transformation process of tertiary sector in Czechoslovakia; respectively in Czech Republic between 1989-1997/98 by analyzing the condition of this sector before 1989. The limitation is given by collapse of centrally planned economy and the economic crisis in 1997. The main objective is to idnetify and explain the profound changes in Czechoslovak, respectively Czech tertiary sector; focusing on media sector. In this thesis I will examine whether, in the period of transformation after 1989, was more successful public entity Czech television or private commercial TV Nova. I will support this analysis by research in practical part; where I will evaluate economic development, own functioning and views on both types of televisions.

Askarany, Davood, and Malcolm Smith. "The Relationship between Technological Innovation Activity Based Costing and Business Size." In 2003 Informing Science + IT Education Conference. Informing Science Institute, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/2673.

Full text
Abstract:
Size is one of the most controversial influencing factors in the diffusion literature. Some authors argue that large firms have several advantages over smaller firms in the adoption of an innovation (Brown 1981), while others argue that diffusion of innovation in small firms is quicker than in large firms because of the advantages associated with small size (Acs & Audretsh, 1988; Julien, 1993; Lefebvre & Le-febvre, 1993; Riding, 1993). However, the controversy on the impact of size on diffusion of innovation has been further complicated by the mixed results of the studies investigating the relationship between size as an influential factor and diffusion of innovation (Aiken, et al., 1980; Blau & McKinley, 1979; Booth & Giacobbe, 1998; Damanpour, 1992; Dewar & Dutton, 1986; Hage, 1980; Krumwiede, 1998; Libby & Waterhouse, 1996). Shedding light on this controversy, this paper examines the relationship between business size and the diffusion of both technological innovation and activity based costing (ABC) through a longitudinal study in a single industry.

Full text
Abstract:
Base-Isolation system using laminated rubber bearings is considered to be an efficient technology of providing a mitigation of seismic damage for structures and equipments, and has proven to be reliable and cost-effective. There are many structures in various countries, which concern not only new constructions but also existing structures, especially after the Loma Prieta (1989), Northridge (1994) and Kobe (1995) earthquakes. Since seismic response of base-isolated structures greatly depends on the mechanical properties of the bearings, deep understanding of the characteristics of the bearings under the conditions of interest is essential toward a rational design of the base-isolation. Considering that the base isolation system in the two horizontal directions has already been used in the bridges and buildings, behaviors of the bearings under the multi-axial loading should be studied experimentally. In the actual design of multi-axial base-isolated structures, bilinear models have often been used independently in the two horizontal directions, and the coupling effects of hysteretic loops are not considered (AASHATO 1999; JRA 1998). Mokha et al. (1990) investigated the behaviors of Teflon friction bearings under tri-axial loading, and proposed a model for this type of bearings (Constantinou et al. 1990; Mokha et al. 1993). Multi-axial behaviors of a HDR and a steel damper have been investigated by Yasaka et al. (1988), and they empirically developed a multi-spring model, in which several bilinear springs or Ramberg-Osgood springs are circularly arranged with regular angle intervals. Huang et al. (2000) investigated the characteristics of tri-axial behaviors of a LRB and proposed a multi-axial model by considering a circular force interaction function of the bilinear model. However, systematic studies have not been conducted on the experimental investigation of several types of laminated rubber bearings. In addition, previously proposed models for laminated rubber bearings do not have definite theoretical backgrounds in the extension into multi-axial case, and they also do not consider the hardening behaviors in the large deformation range. In this paper, multi-axial restoring forces of various types of laminated rubber bearings, which have widely been used in the base-isolated bridges, are investigated experimentally. Then, a one-dimensional and two-dimensional models of the bearings are proposed on the basis of the experimental results.

Abstract:
The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is critically involved in cognitive processes underlying working memory (WM), attention, and inhibition of responses to non-relevant stimuli (Fuster, 2000; Goldman-Rakic, 1996). In this context, catecholaminergic inputs have proven to be critical for the regulation of these cognitive processes (Levitt et al., 1984; Lewis et al., 1987; Lewis and Morrison, 1989; Porrino and Goldman-Rakic, 1982). Aston-Jones and Bloom (1981a, b) showed that, in addition to dopamine (DA) the norepinephrine (NE) neurons located in the locus coeruleus (LC) and terminating in the PFC are important in mediating selective and sustained attention and vigilance. Moreover, stimulation of the LC increases the discrimination of incoming external stimuli to the PFC by reducing the background noise, therefore enhancing the cortical signal-to-noise ratio (Aston-Jones et al., 1985; Berridge and Waterhouse, 2003; Foote et al., 1980, 1983; Waterhouse et al., 1980; Robbins, 2000). More recently, several studies have shown that adrenergic agonists, especially specific alpha-2 agonists, are very effective in enhancing WM and attention. Indeed, administration of alpha-2 agonists can ameliorate some of the negative effects on cognition produced by NE depletion due to aging in monkeys (Arnsten and Goldman-Rakic, 1985; Arnsten et al., 1988; Arnsten and Leslie, 1991) and improve performance in WM-related tasks in young monkeys with NE depletion (Arnsten and Goldman-Rakic, 1985; Cai et al., 1993). Moreover, the therapeutic effects of the specific alpha-2 agonists, clonidine and guanfacine in treating disorders related to dysfunction of WM in patients have been proved (Fields et al., 1988; Mair and McEntree 1986, 1988; Hunt et al., 1985, 1990, 1995).

Kent, Timothy L., and M. Keith Sharp. "Measurement of Flow Through Hypodermic Needles With Modified Entrances for Reduced Hemolysis." In ASME 2012 Summer Bioengineering Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/sbc2012-80259.

Full text
Abstract:
Hemolysis during phlebotomy with hypodermic needles and other cannulae interferes with the assays of a number of metabolites, electrolytes and enzymes, notably potassium, glucose, creatinine, bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase, leading to inaccurate test results [Sharp & Mohammad 1998]. Hemolysis in cannulae can also cause pain and discomfort during dialysis sessions [Dhaene 1989]. Released from red cells, high concentration of plasma free hemoglobin (PFH) is toxic, resulting in renal dysfunction and other organ failure. Therefore, low hemolysis is an important and widely measured performance criterion for a wide range of devices, including artificial hearts [Westaby, et al. 1998], centrifugal blood pumps [Ahmed, et al. 1999], cardiopulmonary bypass pumps [Xiao, et al. 2000], prosthetic valves [Steegers, et al. 1999], blood oxygenators [Skogby, et al. 1998], central venous catheters [Boswald, et al. 1999], heparin anticoagulation bioreactors [Ameer, et al. 1999], visceral perfusion systems [Leijdekkers, et al. 1999], shock wave lithotripsy [Lokhandwalla, et al. 2001a & b], balloon angioplasty [Muhlestein, et al. 1992], and hemodialysers [Yang & Lin 2001]. Models for predicting flow-induced hemolysis promise to reduce the time and expense required to develop such devices [Chen & Sharp 2011]. Several models have been compared with respect to their fit with experimental hemolysis results in needles with modified entrance geometry to reduce fluid stresses on erythrocytes flowing through them [Chen & Sharp 2006]. This paper describes an experiment constructed to validate flows through the needles predicted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Full text
Abstract:
Enbridge Pipelines Inc. operates the world’s longest and most complex liquids pipeline network. As part of Enbridge’s Integrity Management Program In-Line Inspections have been and will continue to be conducted on more than 15,000 km of pipeline. This extensive program is comprised of a mature metal loss and geometry inspection component as well as a crack inspection program utilizing the most sophisticated In-Line Inspection (ILI) tools available. Enbridge conducted its first ultrasonic crack inspection with the British Gas Elastic Wave Vehicle (Now GE Power Systems – Oil & Gas – PII Pipeline Solutions) in September 1993 on a Canadian portion of it’s 864–mm (34”) diameter line. The Elastic Wave Vehicle was also used for crack detection on additional segments of this same 864–mm (34”) diameter line during the following years, 1994, 1995 and 1996. Enbridge then conducted its first crack inspection with the Pipetronix UltraScan CD tool (Now also GE Power Systems – Oil & Gas – PII Pipeline Solutions) in November 1997 on a segment of this 864–mm (34”) diameter line that was previously inspected with the Elastic Wave Vehicle. The UltraScan CD tool was then utilized again in 1999, 2000 and 2001 completing crack inspection of the Canadian portion of this 864–mm (34”) diameter line. Enbridge conducted its first magnetic crack inspection with the PII TranScan (TFI) Circumferential Magnetic inspection tool in December 1998 on a United States portion of another 864–mm (34”) diameter line. This same section of line was subsequently inspected with the PII UltraScan CD tool in July 2001. This paper discusses the comparison of results from overlapping crack inspection data analysis from these three PII crack detection tools. Specifically, the overlap of the UltraScan CD and Elastic Wave Vehicle along with the overlap of the UltraScan CD and TranScan (TFI) tool. The relative performance of each crack detection tool will be explored and conclusions drawn.

Abstract:
There are many factors critical to the success of a Whitbread Round The World Race™ campaign. One of the most significant is the design, construction, and selection of an individual leg inventory of offwind sails. As a result of the technical challenges to the experimental and computational analysis of offwind sails, shape development for this class of sails has historically relied upon empirical efforts. An added element for any advanced, state-of-the-art, sail development program is the extensive reliance upon wind tunnel results to guide sail shape improvement and leg inventory selection of offwind sails. Lessons regarding improved offwind sail shapes, construction techniques, use of exotic materials, and sail trim learned or reinforced during the 1997-98 Whitbread Round the World Race sail development program for Swedish Match, are described with particular emphasis placed on the role of wind tunnel testing.
