Abstract:
Abstract This article discusses a fountain erected in 1988 in memory of the Hildesheim Synagogue at Lappenberg, which was destroyed during Kristallnacht. It traces the relationship between this modern monument and Hildesheim’s rich artistic heritage, mostly from the Middle Ages and centered around the Christian Church. Based on the artists’ choice of technique and materials, as well as on an analysis of some of the monument’s iconography, the layout of its motifs, and its overall composition, the article argues that, although (and because?) the fountain commemorates a synagogue, it must have been expressly designed to evoke Hildesheim’s (Christian) cultural and historical memory so as to elicit the empathy of the local population.

Abstract:
Continuous longterm calculations of quantity and quality processes on the catchment surface, the sewerage system and the treatment plant of the City of Hildesheim have to be carried out in order to estimate the effect of the urban area on the receiving water. The calculations are performed with a pollutant-load-calculation model including a coupled hydrologic-hydrodynamic runoff-transportation module. The achievement of the developed model is shown in the example of two different subcatchments of the City of Hildesheim. With the help of this concept, it is possible to consider the existing transport, storage and treatment capacity more flexible and to find optimal rehabilitation concepts concerning the emission loads just like the resulting costs.

Review: Sprachliche Säkularisierung. Semantik und Pragmatik, ed. Alicja Nagórko, Georg Olms Verlag, Hildesheim–Zürich–New York 2014, 466 pp.The reviewed collective volume falls within the stream of research on the language of religion, yet – unlike theolinguistics, which deals with different varieties of religious texts – the presented studies focus on the use of religious vocabulary in secular contexts. The studies deal with the processes of linguistic secularisation, sociology of religion, and above all – linguistics. The volume consists of twenty-six studies by scholars for Germany, Poland and Slovakia. Tematyka tomu dotyczy procesów językowej sekularyzacji, badanych z perspektywy różnych dyscyplin humanistycznych: kulturoznawstwa, socjologii religii i przede wszystkim językoznawstwa. Tom składa się z 26 opracowań naukowych uczonych z Niemiec, Polski i Słowacji.

Abstract:
The word „SPRACH-FLUSS“ (flow of language), depicts images of flowing rivers and streams; babbling, gurgling, murmuring along to their destination. They encounter obstacles, turn corners and meander but undeniably reach their goal. SPRACH-FLUSS was a project held in the Sub-Saharan region of Africa in the years 2008 and 2009. 120 pupils and their teachers from 16 countries in Africa took part in these work-shops organised by the Goethe Institute in Johannesburg in conjunction with the Institute for Theatre and Media at the University of Hildesheim in Germany. Of these 120, 20 were invited to put what they learned to use, in a ‘meet-and-greet’ workshop in the Robert-Bosch secondary school in Hildesheim. The high point of this workshop was a stage performance at the Berlin Academy of Art, called „Sprachen ohne Grenzen“ (Languages without Borders). The aim of the workshops, both in Africa and Germany, was for the pupils and teachers to experience through descriptive games, communication training, body work and personality development, a livelier, more enjoyable and more effective method of learning and teaching German. The participants experienced the German language as an international means of communication, during the various interactive exercises they turned corners and meandered but worked hard ...

Abstract:
At first glance, Andrew Bergerson's Ordinary Germans in Extraordinary Times appears to be another local study about the rise and legitimation of Nazism, one more addition to an already impressive list of similar undertakings. What distinguishes this work is the author's effort, through ethnography and oral history, to link the everyday neighborly practices of ordinary Germans in the Hannoverian town of Hildesheim to Nazi criminality. The result is an insightful and often provocative analysis of informal and unexceptional social behavior that paradoxically masked the more formal commitments of class, religion, and ideology in the name of civility, while simultaneously deepening those very same divisions.

Review: Jana Marková, Religiöse Konzepte im tschechischen nationalen Diskurs (1860–1885), Georg Olms Verlag, Hildesheim – Zürich – New York 2016, 371 pp.The article reviews a book, which analyzes a portion of Czech national discourse of the second half of the 19th century, looking into the vocabulary it used to express concepts characteristic of the discourse of religion. The research material is constituted by the Czech texts from the period, concerning mostly two events of great importance to the Czech national movement. One of the events was the 1868 laying of the foundation stone for the National Theatre in Prague; the other – the 1873 centennial of the lexicographer, writer and linguist Josef Jungmann.

Abstract:
An ophiuroid assemblage from Rhaetian dark shales in a subrosion pipe (or sinkhole) penetrating middle Triassic (Muschelkalk) strata, and, outside the subrosion pipe, disconcordantly overlying middle Triassic strata, east of Winterswijk, the Netherlands, is described, discussed and assessed taxonomically. The material consists of nearly intact and articulated as well as wholly disintegrated skeletons, almost all of which are pyritised, yet so well preserved that the diagnostic characters could be studied in detail. All specimens belong to Aplocoma agassizi (von Münster, 1839). Examination of the type material of Ophiolepis damesii Wright, 1874 (housed at the Roemer and Pelizäus Museum in Hildesheim, Germany, collection numbers NKP 7821 to NKP 7828) from Rhaetian strata at Hildesheim, Germany, comparable to those exposed at Winterswijk, has revealed that O. damesii is to be considered a nomen dubium due to the insufficient preservation of the type material. Based on the present lot, which documents the first Triassic echinoderms from the well-known Winterswijk quarry complex, we suggest that the genus Aplocoma is best reassigned to the family Ophiolepididae, in proximity to the extant Ophiozonella, and that the family Aplocomidae is to be suppressed. From a palaeoecological point of view, the Winterswijk assemblage illustrates preservation under the influence of storms in an otherwise very quiet environment; it is here interpreted as a monospecific assemblage amidst an oligospecific bivalve community in a near-coastal, shallow, muddy setting with fluctuating or low salinity levels and/or dysoxic bottom waters.

Abstract:
Hildesheim, Zürich, New York 2009. BJ 2009, S. 233-238

Abstract:
Departing from examples of German theatre study programs (University of Giessen, University of Hildesheim, University of Bochum), which include performance practice, my contribution discusses specific roles and functions of practical experience in the academic context. I will present and discuss three discursive fields in relation to performance practice as part of academic education: 1) Performance practice as a way of taking a political stance with the aim of changing academic education and to promote alternative forms of theatre. 2) Performance practice as a marketable good within humanities to promote study programs. 3) Performance practice as a means of acquiring alternative knowledge for theatre education and research.

Abstract:
The electrical conductivity and pH value are, amongst other parameters, continuously recorded in monitoring stations at important surface waters in Lower Saxony. The data are directly transmitted to the surveillance centre in Hildesheim. This paper deals with the estimates of concentrations of the most important ions in water by using mathematical models. The basis for the calculations are the conductivity and, in case of a eutrophic lake, the pH value as well. The methods are demonstrated by using data from the river Weser and from the shallow lake Dümmer. The Weser is one of the main rivers in Lower Saxony. It is heavily polluted by potash mine wastes.

Abstract:
The inhomogeneity of sewer sediment bed material in terms of physical and pollution characteristics is known. To quantify the variations over time and depth of bed deposits an extensive study investigating the properties of bed deposits in a combined interceptor sewer in the city of Hildesheim was carried out. High temporal variations as well as vertical gradients of bed characteristics were found especially for pollution characteristics (chemical and biochemical oxygen demand) and volatile solids content; physical parameters (bulk density, total solids content) appeared to vary less. The fluctuations were related to degradation processes in the sediment bed and exchange processes between bed deposits and sewage.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this article Ise Jingu, Japan, and the church of St Michael, Germany, are juxtaposed. At first glance they do not seem to have much in common, except that they exist as a testimony to the intentions of the original builders who established their distinctive architectural traditions and, physically, both are recent reconstructions. The reasons for their reconstruction are different because, whereas the Ise precincts are renewed as it were in obedience to a sacred injunction at a place where war never occurred, the renewal of the Hildesheim church to its original design is predominantly the result of circumstance and the vicissitudes of devastation, plunder and war.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives To evaluate how the certification of specialised Oncology Centres in Germany affects the relative survival of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) by means of national and international comparison. Methods Between 2007 and 2013, 675 patients with colorectal cancer, treated at the Hildesheim Hospital, an academic teaching hospital of the Hannover Medical School (MHH), were included. A follow-up of the entire patient group was performed until 2014. To obtain international data, a SEER-database search was done. The relative survival of 148,957 patients was compared to our data after 12, 36 and 60 months. For national survival data, we compared our rates with 41,988 patients of the Munich Cancer Registry (MCR). Results Relative survival at our institution tends to be higher in advanced tumour stages compared to national and international cancer registry data. Nationally we found only little variation in survival rates for low stages CRC (UICC I and II), colon, and rectal cancer. There were notable variations regarding relative survival rates for advanced CRC tumour stages (UICC IV). These variations were even more distinct for rectal cancer after 12, 36 and 60 months (Hildesheim Hospital: 89.9, 40.3, 30.1%; Munich Cancer Registry (MCR): 65.4, 28.7, 16.6%). The international comparison of CRC showed significantly higher relative survival rates for patients with advanced tumour stages after 12 months at our institution (77 vs. 54.9% for UICC IV; raw p<0.001). Conclusions Our findings suggest that patients with advanced tumour stages of CRC and especially rectal cancer benefit most from a multidisciplinary and guidelines-oriented treatment at Certified Oncology Centres. For a better evaluation of cancer treatment and improved national and international comparison, the creation of a centralised national cancer registry is necessary.
