Abstract:
This thesis employs models of homogenous and differentiated products to empirically investigate the demand for mobile phone services in Sub-Saharan African countries. The thesis consists of a short introductory chapter, three self-contained empirical chapters, and a summary chapter. In Chapter 2, we use survey data conducted in 2011 in eleven countries in Sub-Saharan African to analyze how the availability of physical infrastructure influences the adoption of mobile phones and usage of mobile services. The availability of physical service infrastructure is approximated by data on night-time light intensity in the areas in which survey respondents reside. After controlling for a number of individual and household characteristics including disposable income, we find that adoption of mobile phones is higher in areas with better physical infrastructure. However, in the group of mobile phone adopters, the use of mobile phones for mobile financial transactions is negatively influenced by the level of infrastructure. Mobile phone users who live in areas with poor infrastructure are more likely to rely on mobile phones to make financial transactions than individuals living in areas with better infrastructure. On the other hand, the use of mobile phones to access services such as email, skype, social media networks and Internet browsing is not dependent on the availability of physical infrastructure. Our results support the notion that mobile phones improve the livelihoods of individuals residing in remote areas by providing them with access to financial services which are otherwise not available physically. Chapter 3 examines the effect of mobile number portability (MNP) on own- and cross-price elasticities. Using quarterly data for 28 mobile operators in seven Sub-Saharan Africa countries between 2010Q4 to 2014Q4 to estimate a differentiated products demand model, we find that MNP increased own-price elasticities of demand in countries that have implemented the facility. This increase in price elasticities may be a result of a reduction in switching costs between operators. On average, the introduction of MNP increases own-price elasticities by 0.47 in absolute value. We compare the level of price elasticities before and after the implementation of MNP in Ghana and Kenya, which implemented this policy in the time period of our study. Our results suggest that in Ghana, MNP increased own-price elasticities by an average of 0.35 in absolute terms from an average value across firms and over time of -0.74. In Kenya, the introduction of MNP increased own-price elasticities by an average of 0.21 in absolute terms from a lower average value across firms and over time of -0.39. However, we find that in Kenya and Ghana the average own-price elasticities remained small even after the implementation of MNP relative to other countries without MNP in place. Thus, our results suggest that MNP is not the ultimate solution for increasing competitiveness within the mobile industry. While in Chapter 3 we use a product differentiated model of demand, in Chapter 4 we make assumptions that allow us to use a homogenous model of demand to examine the effect of regulatory policies on mobile retail prices. Using aggregated quarterly data for eight African countries for the period 2010:Q4 to 2014:Q4, we estimate structural demand and supply equations. We find that mobile termination rates (MTR) have a significant positive impact on mobile retail prices. A decline in average MTR of 10% decreases average mobile retail prices by 2.5%. On the other hand, MNP has an insignificant effect on price and subscriptions in selected African countries. This may be due to inadequate implementation of MNP, which subsequently lead to low demand for porting numbers. The average market conduct in the mobile telecommunications industry for selected African countries can be approximated by Cournot Nash equilibrium. In Chapter 4 we find price elasticities that are closer to 1 in absolute terms. The price elasticity, however, is estimated at an average of -0.27 for Sub-Saharan Africa countries in Chapter 4. We attribute this inconsistency to the different assumptions made in each chapter.

Nasseef, Omar A. "The usage of MIS applications to raise the efficiency and performance of the telecommunications services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/2179.

Abstract:
There are different kinds of requirements on an information system. Of particular concern to this study are non-functional requirements (NFRs). These are aspects of a system. independent of any technical capabilities that it may have, which form a series of constraints on how a system will actually perform, and of which an organisation must take account in order to achieve success. This thesis studies non-functional requirements with particular reference to those that support an organisation in the process of structural change. Particular attention is paid to those non-functional requirements that will be constraints that hinder the performance and efficiency of any organisation if they are not fully understood and incorporated into the new information system. The way in which such non-functional requirements should be handled is illustrated by an extensive case study of the main provider of telecommunications services in Saudi Arabia. The researcher first took an interest in the Saudi telecommunications industry as a result of the recent moves to transform the country's telecommunications service from the traditional structure to a new system by the introduction of privatisation. The new modified system is called the Saudi Telecom Company (STC), though it is at present still under the effective control of the Saudi Ministry of Post, Telephone and Telegraph (MoPTT), the previous telecommunications service provider. The Saudi telecommunications service has been a monopoly managed through traditional public management systems, typically influenced by a dominant bureaucracy. The researcher's concern has been to study and describe the current management, structure, and operations (in particular the information systems) of the MoPTT in order to identifY key issues and potential areas for development which will help the MoPTT, as the STC, to offer a quality telecommunications service in the new competitive market. The researcher sets the telecommunications industry in Saudi Arabia in its national context by providing the political, cultural and economic background to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This is of particular importance in view of the significance discovered by his study of non-technical environmental factors in the performance of the telecommunications service in the country. Using a combination of the qualitative and quantitative research approaches, the researcher examined the literature relevant to his topic and undertook a fieldtrip to Saudi Arabia, when he conferred extensively with MoPTI management and staff, observed MoPTI structures and operations, and consulted other experts in telecommunications. Reflection on the literature along with extensive fieldtrip consultation and observation reveal that a full account of the operations and potential of the Saudi telecommunications system cannot be provided by a consideration of its technical functions and processes alone. Due recognition must be given to the peculiarly Saudi setting of the service, and in particular attention must be paid to non-functional aspects, such requirements and constraints related to the environment in which the system has to operate. Culturally related non-functional requirements are of particular interest, and the case of Internet access in Saudi Arabia is examined, since it provides an especially good example of a non-functional requirement which is undergoing change, while still acting as a constraint on telecommunications usage. The case is related to a new conception of Saudisation, whereby Saudi personnel are no longer simply taking over and imitating western skills, but where they are providing Saudi solutions to Saudi questions. Using information gathered largely during his fieldtrip, the researcher provides a comprehensive description and discussion of the current MoPTT business areas, organisational structures, and information systems. Not only the commercial and technical features of these operations are examined, but also the extent to which they succeed in fulfilling or operating within the non-functional requirements and constraints, especially those of particularly Saudi origin, imposed upon them. Where appropriate, potential new approaches and directions for the MoPTI in relation to handling issues are indicated. Employing techniques developed by Dr. Michael Porter of Harvard University, an analysis has been provided of the of the MoPTI's enterprise strategy, since it is this which ultimately drives all the operations of the MoPTI, and upon which the MoPTI's telecommunications service will depend for commercial success in the new postprivatisation market. Based upon this analysis, the researcher has put forward explicit operational, managerial, and business proposals which should allow the MoPTT to seize the opportunities offered by privatisation, and to achieve success in both the domestic and the international telecommunications market. The researcher has felt able to identifY a number of specific factors within the MoPTr which might receive particular attention for revision and improvement, as they impact on all MoPTT operations and are of critical importance for its commercial success. These areas are strategic planning, marketing, training, customer relations, an integrated information system, and workforce management. As a result of his investigation into the operations of the MoPTT the researcher has been able to identify a new approach to the future of telecommunications in Saudi Arabia. He has designed an information architecture within which the MoPTT information systems might operate, and which takes full account of the role of non-functional aspects in the degree of success of such a complex operation. He offers a comprehensive description of the basis, operational details, and advantages of the implementation of this architecture for the MoPTT's information system operations. The particular benefits of Saudisation are stressed. It became clear during the research that the concept of Saudisation simply as the taking over and imitation of tasks previously carried out by non-Saudis (because they had the training and experience) was now inadequate. Saudisation has now to be understood as a cultural as well as a technical or business transformation, a dynamic concept relating both to enduring Saudi cultural values and to changing social attitudes and practices. Indeed this concept of Saudisation would repay further investigation as a suitable topic for future academic research, and the researcher makes this recommendation. He does so principally because the traditional understanding of the concept now seems inadequate and therefore a factor likely to inlnbit the truly indigenous development industry and services within Saudi Arabia.

Abstract:
This application is created to provide valid and relevant travel information to travelers on their journey. The application is proposed as a demonstration for seamless communications in the VINNOVA-sponsored project PIITSA (Personal Information Intelligent Transport systems through Seamless communications and Autonomous decisions). The PIITSA-project is a cooperation between Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH), Saab AB, SP Swedish National Testing and Research Institute and Swedish Road Administration region Stockholm. The project is going on under three years, and the goal is to define communication and decision functions which will make it easier for ITS-applications (Intelligent Transport Systems and Services) that have the need of supplying personalised information. This project presents a solution to the question “How do I get from point A to point B in any case”. All that the user needs is a PDA with the application installed and being able to connect to the service via a mobile network. If the user has specified a route in the application, then the user will receive up-to-date information on how to get to his destination. This information is presented on the user’s PDA. If something happens on the current route, then the user will get an automatic message sent to him presenting the problem and give him a new travel route. Thanks to this the user won’t be stuck in the traffic problem and will probably reach its destination in time.<br>Examensarbetet tog fram en demonstrationstjänst för det VINNOVA-sponsrade projekt PIITSA (Personlig Information i Intelligenta Transportsystem genom Sömlös kommunikation och Autonoma beslut). Abstract:
There is a great difference that exists between people who have access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and those who do not. As a developing nation, South Africa is badly affected by the so-called Digital Divide. Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICTD) interventions are rapidly increasing in marginalized and rural communities in striving to bridge this digital divide. This research project is undertaken within the context of the Siyakhula Living Lab (SLL) which is an ICTD intervention at Dwesa rural community. This research investigates how audio-based services can be applied locally for communication and information sharing. This research aims to develop a user-driven telephony framework which will enable users to construct customized audio-based services. This aims to empower the Dwesa community for skill development and supports the user-driven innovation. The Internet and Telephones are the most popular technologies that are widely used in our daily life for purposes of communication and information access. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) integrates these two separate technologies (Internet and Telephones) to produce real-time multimedia communication services such as Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems. In addition, the ability of VoIP presenting information through voice plays a crucial role, more especially to those who do not have web visual access or those who are computer illiterate.

Abstract:
<p>This paper describes the design, implementation and evaluation of HyperSALmon, a Java™ open source prototype for visualizing service models in telecommunication networks. For efficient browsing and graphical monitoring of service models using SALmon, a service modeling language and a monitoring engine (Leijon et al., 2008), some kind of interactive GUI that implements a visualization of the service model is desired. This is what HyperSALmon is intended to do. The prototype has been designed in accordance with suggestions derived from a current research report of visualization techniques (Sehlstedt, 2008) appropriate for displaying service model data. In addition to these suggestions domain experts at Data Ductus Nord AB has expressed an urge for implementation of further features, some of their suggestions are deduced from research documents (Leijon et al., 2008; Wallin and Leijon, 2007, 2006), while others have been stated orally in direct relation to the prototype implementation work. The main visualization proposal is to use tree structures. Thus, both traditional tree structures and hyperbolic tree structures have been utilized, where the main navigation is set to occur in the hyperbolic tree view. In order to contribute further to this report I provide a discussion addressing problems related to the context of implementing a prototype for service model visualization using open source frameworks that meets the requirements set by the service model network architecture, the domain experts and the suggestions in the research report (Sehlstedt, 2008,page 51-52). Finally, I will present drawn conclusions of the attempted prototype implementation, illustrating potential strengths and weaknesses and consequently introduce suggestions for possible improvement and further development.</p>

Awarded by:University of New South Wales - Australian Defence Force Academy. School of Electrical Engineering, 1999. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/38652.

Abstract:
Error resilience is an important issue when coded video data is transmitted over wired and wireless networks. Errors can be introduced by network congestion, mis-routing and channel noise. These transmission errors can result in bit errors being introduced into the transmitted data or packets of data being completely lost. Consequently, the quality of the decoded video is degraded significantly. This thesis describes new techniques for minimising this degradation. To verify video error resilience tools, it is first necessary to consider the methods used to carry out experimental measurements. For most audio-visual services, streams of both audio and video data need to be simultaneously transmitted on a single channel. The inclusion of the impact of multiplexing schemes, such as MPEG 2 Systems, in error resilience studies is also an important consideration. It is shown that error resilience measurements including the effect of the Systems Layer differ significantly from those based only on the Video Layer. Two major issues of error resilience are investigated within this thesis. They are resynchronisation after error detection and error concealment. Results for resynchronisation using small slices, adaptive slice sizes and macroblock resynchronisation schemes are provided. These measurements show that the macroblock resynchronisation scheme achieves the best performance although it is not included in MPEG2 standard. The performance of the adaptive slice size scheme, however, is similar to that of the macroblock resynchronisation scheme. This approach is compatible with the MPEG 2 standard. The most important contribution of this thesis is a new concealment technique, namely, Decoder Motion Vector Estimation (DMVE). The decoded video quality can be improved significantly with this technique. Basically, this technique utilises the temporal redundancy between the current and the previous frames, and the correlation between lost macroblocks and their surrounding pixels. Therefore, motion estimation can be applied again to search in the previous picture for a match to those lost macroblocks. The process is similar to that the encoder performs, but it is in the decoder. The integration of techniques such as DMVE with small slices, or adaptive slice sizes or macroblock resynchronisation is also evaluated. This provides an overview of the performance produced by individual techniques compared to the combined techniques. Results show that high performance can be achieved by integrating DMVE with an effective resynchronisation scheme, even at a high cell loss rates. The results of this thesis demonstrate clearly that the MPEG 2 standard is capable of providing a high level of error resilience, even in the presence of high loss. The key to this performance is appropriate tuning of encoders and effective concealment in decoders.

Abstract:
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is widely regarded as a key tool for bringing about development to people who live in underserved areas. Technologies such as mobile phones and Wi-Fi are seen as advantageous because they can be made available to poor places without the cost of building extensive physical infrastructure. However, researchers argue that ICTs have failed to live up to their potential in the context of development. Researchers point out developing countries lack frameworks to guide them through the implementation of ICTs in this context. The objective of this study is to come up with a framework that can be used in rural areas in South Africa to implement ICT projects. The researcher interviewed individuals who have been directly involved in an ICT initiative in a rural setting in the Eastern Cape Province to learn from their experiences. The researcher also studied publications that have been produced from these initiatives in order to gain a richer understanding. The findings of the study show that participants share similar views about how ICT projects should be approached and implemented in rural areas in South Africa. The views are grouped according to similarity into themes and discussed in detail in the study. From these themes a framework that can help implement ICT projects in rural areas is developed.

Abstract:
In view of Bluetooth?s growing popularity a lot of research is being done to improve the performance of Bluetooth. Most of the research being performed prerequisites that a connection has already been made. Due to the frequency hopping spread spectrum used by Bluetooth the connection establishment is not as easy as it seams. Two processes have been derived to bridge the frequency discrepancies between devices, inquiry and page. In this thesis, we study the inquiry and page processes and the time it takes to complete a connection with no, one or two voice channels present at the initiating device. We have found the times to complete the processes to be lengthy at best, unreasonably long if there is voice traffic present. Through optimisation, we have decreased the mean time to connect. We propose some changes to the default values of a few time outs and variables, which yields a substantial improvement in performance, especially in the case when there is voice traffic present. The changes are in the software only, no changes in hardware are necessary. After a connection is made a client may want to start using the services of the device it is connected to. This is another topic of this thesis. Bluetooth does not provide means of accessing a service, only discovering it. Thus, there is the need for higher-level protocols for accessing services. We have investigated some of the service discovery protocols currently available.<br>Med tanke på Bluetooth-teknikens växande popularitet bedrivs mycket forskning för att förbättra Bluetooth-teknikens prestanda.

Abstract:
<p>Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a technique that can be used to improve the performance of a computer communication network. By use of MPLS, data packets can be switched on the basis of labels rather than routed on the basis of destination address. MPLS supports different features like QoS, traffic engineering and VPNs etc.</p><p>This thesis evaluates the working and performance of MPLS and its support for Quality of Service. QoS is required in the network when real time traffic is transported.</p><p>In this thesis it is described, how QoS guarantees are assigned to the IP packets and how MPLS QoS environment differs from the traditional IP routing environment. MPLS QoS works as the IP QoS, but MPLS QoS enhances the capability of network as compared to the IP QoS based network.</p><p>The thesis studies the use of MPLS in an integrated environment with DiffServ QoS model and also implements MPLS QoS in a Lab environment to compare MPLS QoS with IP QoS. Real time traffic faces longer delays in IP QoS based networks. MPLS QoS reduces the delays in real time traffic transmission.</p><p>The study results and the practical implementations show that MPLS QoS provide much better results than simple IP QoS.</p>

After significant advances in telecommunications networks and infrastructure in recent decades, there emerges the concept of Internet of Things (IoT). The field of research on IoT spreads through several knowledge areas, such as computing, engineering, telecommunications, economics and business. The present study considers the fact that IoT can make an actual transformation in the telecommunications industry possible both for suppliers and operators. The Internet of Things may influence various components of telecommunications operators’ business model, which can be studied from various perspectives. However, this work deals specifically with IoT product and service development in the environment of Brazil’s telecommunications operators. Thus, the main goal of this exploratory study is to identify how the demand for IoT applications can influence telecommunications operators’ product and services development in Brazil. We analyzed this influence based on the multiple case study we conducted with three communications operators, examining each of them for aspects related to IoT solution demand, IoT product and service development and offer IoT solutions. Results show that the operators perceive IoT-related solution demand to have increased strongly, mainly in the corporate segment, precisely where the operators have been focusing most on. However, the IoT product and service development model calls for a clear adaptation, i.e., it requires a greater participation of technology partners, support for startup accelerators and technology labs, thus making way for the use of agile methodologies in this development process, in order to consolidate and expand the IoT offer portfolio, which, despite these operators’ recent efforts, has so far proved small.

Abstract:
Telecommunication service utilisation (TSU) focuses on how customers make use of telecommunication services and can provide valuable information for decision making for improved customer service delivery. When a telecommunication service provider consults with customers, large amounts of static documentation on TSU data are compiled. Compiling this documentation for in-field investigation is manually intensive and the documentation does not effectively support decision making. Existing systems for visualising TSU data do not efficiently support in-field investigation of TSU and lack dynamic interaction. This highlights the need to investigate a solution to better support in-field investigation of TSU. This research followed a Design Science Research methodology to develop and evaluate a solution to solve the problem identified. The use of tablet devices for in-field investigation of TSU was identified as a suitable solution. Mobile information visualisation (MIV) techniques were investigated to determine appropriate display and interaction techniques for the visualisation of TSU data on a tablet device. An existing visualisation framework for TSU was identified and extended to incorporate touch-based interactions. Three service usage views were identified for visualising TSU, namely a Trend, Network and Detail Usage View. A Dashboard View was also identified to provide a quick reference view of the different views. A prototype called MobiTel was developed on a tablet device. MobiTel incorporated the identified information visualisation techniques. MobiTel was evaluated using an expert review and a user study to determine its usability and usefulness. The results indicated that MobiTel was perceived as being useful for in-field investigation and that the participants perceived the prototype to be easy to use and learn. The user study also indicated that the participants were satisfied with MobiTel. This research has determined that MIV techniques can be used for in-field investigation of TSU. Design recommendations were devised for designing an interactive mobile prototype for visualising service usage information. Future work will involve using map-based visualisation for visualising TSU data on different customer sites.

The objective of this research is to understand how mbile phone operators can set their service bundling offers. An exploratory study, followed by a survey made through structured questionaries were done in order to evaluate the customers value perceptions. Value perceptions here is defined as the trade-off between the perceived benefits and the perceived sacrifice to obtain a given benefit. Although most of the times price is the sacrifice side on the perceived value relationship, the results show that on average the customers are willing to pay 50 percent more to have benefits that better fit and control their use standards.

Full text
Abstract:
Trade in services is central to the world economy today. Telecommunications services, in particular, can be traded directly as well as providing a medium through which goods and other services can be traded. They are therefore critical to development and the expansion of world trade. This thesis provides a legal analysis of the liberalization of trade in telecommunications services through the multilateral framework of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS). More specifically, it examines the interplay of multilateral rules and the domestic regulation of telecommunications in the context of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the US, and India. The telecommunications industry has until recently been heavily regulated. Even in the US, the movement towards deregulation began only in the 1970s. An in depth examination of the US telecommunications industry in Chapter 2 provides a background analysis of the origin of policies on liberalization of telecommunications domestically and internationally. Chapter 3 examines the current importance of the service economy and the decision of the developed countries, in particular the US, to expand trade in services through liberalization. Chapters 3 and 4 illustrate the extent to which developed countries were the driving force for a multilateral framework within the WTO to govern trade in services, including telecommunications. Chapter 5 shows that developing countries, such as India, although demonstrating their recognition of the benefits of telecommunications liberalization through autonomous regulatory reforms, have so far been restrictive in their WTO services commitments. From this study, it is clear that the movement in both developed and developing countries is towards liberalization and competition. More specifically, the thesis demonstrates the extent to which trade liberalization together with domestic regulatory reform are necessary in order to achieve the liberalization of trade in telecommunications services.

Abstract:
<p>This thesis aims to investigate a method and tool for emulation of the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) core network needed as an environment to test the routing functionality. GPRS is the most widely adopted mobile packet data delivery technology in the world. It utilizes an Intranet Protocol (IP)-based core network and involves significant changes to the way the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) air interface is structured. It also forms the basis of the future structure of mobile network transmission and switching.</p><p>The Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) is the most fundamental node in GPRS. Ericsson produces and manages an increasing number of SGSN nodes in the world. One of main functionalities of SGSN node is to forward IP packets according to the destination address in the IP header on IP core network.</p><p>In each new release of SGSN, or when implementation or upgrades have been done on routing application on SGSN, design and test engineers at Ericsson need to emulate the IP core network. This must be done with use of many routers to generate huge amounts of data that can simulate the real world IP core network.</p><p>The major goal of this thesis was to analyze and verifying the use of a suitable and economical solution to emulating IP Core Network of the GPRS system for testing of different functionality of the routing application running in SGSN , instead of building up a physical Core Network with different infrastructure and many routers.</p><p>The method chosen for emulating the IP core network with many routers, and investigated in the thesis, is based on a Cisco simulator called “Dynamips”, which runs many actual Cisco Internetwork Operating Systems (IOS) with many different models of Cisco products in a virtual environment on Windows or Linux platforms. With this simulator, engineers at Ericsson will be able to use this simulator to emulate IP core network easily and efficiently to accomplish system test cases.</p><p>A conclusion of this work is that Dynamips could be used to emulate many complicated IP core network scenarios, with many routers to generate huge amounts of data to simulate the real world IP core network. The emulated system fulfils its purpose for testing of the routing application of SGSN regarding different functionality and characteristics. This is done to ensure and verify that SGSN routing application meets its functional and technical requirements, and also helps to find undiscovered errors as well as helps to ensure that the individual components of routing application on SGSN are working correctly.</p>

Abstract:
Thanks to the use of satellite technology, mobile personal telecommunications systems are able to provide communications simultaneously anywhere on the Earth's surface. The implementation of such systems raises several regulatory issues: after a brief explanation of the technical characteristics of different satellite systems in the first chapter, the second chapter will introduce the principles of space law relevant to satellite communications, with particular attention to the provisions which the development of global satellite telecommunication system could infringe. In the third chapter, there will be place for further analysis of international regulations established in the framework of the International Telecommunication Union and the World Trade Organisation, dealing more specifically with satellite telecommunications. The discipline established by the former organisation aims to the optimal management of the orbit and spectrum resources, particularly controversial because of the divergence of interests and exigencies of the member countries, whereas the latter intervened in the liberalisation of the telecommunication services, with the purpose to create an open environment for their diffusion. Furthermore, telecommunication activities are subjected to national regulation. The domestic discipline pertaining to global mobile satellite telecommunication services will be analysed in the fourth chapter, with particular attention to the U.S. Federal Communication Commission regulations and to the developments of Italian legislation in the light of the recent European initiatives in the field. National authorisation requirement conditions, in spite of the international effort toward regulatory harmonisation and liberalisation, are the key elements in the deployment of global mobile telecommunications services. National authorities should not continue to function solely on the basis of their national considerations, but be more flexible and open to cooperation, a

Abstract:
La conclusion constate l'achevement et la coherence du nouveau regime tout en s'interrogeant sur sa capacite a s'adapter a de nouvelles donnees<br>The aim of the thesis is to analyse community regulation of telecommunications services as an expression of the policy developped in this sector. The first part provides an analysis of the legal, economical and political foundations of the community actiion and draws the idea that the european model of regulation is specific. The second part presents the conditions for service provision. Firstly, it gives an overview of the decisions taken by the european community in order to open the services market to competition and to promote the introductioin of paneuropean services. Special attention is paid to the way liberalization and harmonization are balanced. Secondly, the study aims at anaysing the new regulation of the telecommunications market which main characteristic is the coexistencve of monopoly and competition. This regulation is ensured on one hand by measures harmonizing in particular access to the network infrastructure and to certain services and on the other hand by application of competition rules to the telecommunications sector. The conclusion emphasizes that the new regulation is complete and coherent but raises the question of its adaptation ability to further legal and economical evolution

Abstract:
Thesis (MEng)-- Stellenbosch University, 2013.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa’s health sector has not yet shown enough improvement to reach the Millennium Development Goals related to health. One of the problem areas is the low infant and child vaccination coverage in certain areas of South Africa. The use of mobile phones in health care (mHealth) has the potential to strengthen the primary health care system through improved information management. A mobile health solution for vaccination (MHSV) can be used to improve information management of vaccinations, which in turn can improve vaccination coverage. However, the feasibility of implementing such an MHSV in the South African context is unknown. This study therefore investigates the feasibility of using mobile phones to improve information management for child vaccinations in South Africa. Feasibility is determined by using a feasibility framework together with business model development. The feasibility framework, which is informed by a literature study, surveys and a case study, determines the feasibility of an MHSV in terms of human factors, technical feasibility, information management, policies and ethics, and economics. It is found that an MHSV is feasible in South Africa, although certain areas pose challenges that will have to be considered. Complementing the feasibility framework, business models are developed to suggest possible ways in which an MHSV can be deployed in South Africa. These models build on the results from the feasibility framework and are developed using Osterwalder’s business model canvas. The effect of the National Health Insurance (NHI) on these business models is also examined. In order to validate the feasibility framework and business models, interviews were held with experts in health care and mobile phone solutions. These interviews show that the research is valid and that the feasibility framework and business models can be generalised to the wider field of mHealth solutions.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Suid-Afrika se gesondheidsektor het nog nie genoeg verbetering getoon om die gesondheidsverwante Millenium Ontwikkelingsdoelwitte te bereik nie.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION The pressure to contain health costs, particularly by avoiding hospitalizations and promoting the early discharge of patients, is generating a greater demand for home healthcare at a time when this resource is rapidly becoming less available. Telemedicine has been defined as the use of information and communications technologies (ICT), to deliver health services and transmit health information at distance for the purpose of improving patient’s care and education and to facilitate communication between patients and healthcare professionals. Most of the studies on telemedicine showed a lot of potentialities and possibilities, but did not develop further in the clinical routine because of problems and difficulties involving the use of this technology. Therefore, it seems clear the need of simple and straightforward applications, which can provide useful and widely applicable services to healthcare and as well as reliable data to assess the actual impact of telemedicine on homecare. 2) GENERAL AIM To design, develop, validate and assess the benefit of new Information and Communication Technology (ICT) applications in healthcare at patient’s home. 3) HYPOTHESES 1. An Internet-based support system for monitoring newborn patients after discharge from nursery would improve care, be well accepted by parents and reduce unplanned healthcare, particularly visits to the emergency department; 2. The development of a specific web-based tool could introduce a new strategy for the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy follow-up of patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), which could improve the CPAP compliance, reduce face-to-face clinical visits, and be more cost-effective; 3. A new telemedicine system for remote CPAP therapy monitoring could provide valuable and useful data about treatment compliance and efficacy for the follow-up of OSAS patients. 4) STUDY 1 - A new Internet-based monitoring tool for the neonatal home care after discharge was successfully developed; - This new monitoring approach resulted in a high level of parental satisfaction with the service; - Using a societal perspective, the cost of the Internet-based follow-up resulted much lower than that of the conventional hospital-based follow-up. Additionally, ED visits in the first month of patients’ life decreased with the use of the Internet-based monitoring system. This telemedicine follow-up strategy proved absolute dominance (both more clinically effective and less costly) over the standard follow-up based on hospital visits; - This Internet-based tool has been effectively transferred to the health system since it is in routine clinical use at the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona (www.petitsacasa.santpau.cat). 5) STUDY 2 - The opinion of the interviewed patients and medical staff about the helpfulness and satisfaction of the telemedicine monitoring approach indicated that the web-based support tool together with the televisit are potentially useful to support the home follow-up of CPAP treatment in OSAS patients; - The high patients’ compliance to the remote monitoring through the online questionnaire suggested this strategy to be helpful and practical for the long-period CPAP therapy control; - The multicenter support system we developed represents a new telemedicine approach to CPAP therapy follow-up for OSAS patients, which seeks enforcing patients’ confidence and improving therapy adherence; - The developed telemedicine support system has been effectively transferred to the health system since it is in use in a multinational clinical trial currently involving 18 hospitals (www.mi-cpap.com). 6) STUDY 3 - The geometry of the telemonitoring device (NOWAPI) does not influence the CPAP treatment; - NOWAPI showed good compatibility with the CPAP machines and an excellent performance in estimating the duration of the CPAP treatment and in detecting residual respiratory events in simulated OSAS patients. The results of this study demonstrated that NOWAPI system could be a valuable tool for telemonitoring the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea;

Abstract:
Attempts to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural Information and Communications Technology (ICT) users have led to the deployment of ICT platforms in remote rural areas. This puts an increased demand for skilled support in rural ICT platforms to assist users in resolving technical problems that they face on a daily basis. A web based help desk system is developed and implemented to allow knowledge sharing and collaboration amongst users and experts as a way of ensuring the technical sustainability of the Siyakhula Living Lab, a remote rural based Information and Communications Technology (ICT4D) intervention. The research describes the use of Transactional and Innovation & Creative knowledge management strategies and their associated applications such as case-based reasoning (CBR) methods and collaborative knowledge approaches to develop a help desk support system for a geographically distributed multipurpose ICT centre in Dwesa, a rural remote area in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. The system implemented in this study has been validated for functional adequacy and usability within the Siyakhula Living Lab. The results of the evaluation are presented in this thesis to provide the initial validation of the effectiveness of the help desk system. Abstract:
Mobile telecommunications industry has experienced high growth rates for the recent 30 years. Accordingly, forecasting the future of mobile telecommunications services is important not only for mobile operators but also for all stakeholders in this industry ranging from handset manufacturers to vendors. In this thesis, the diffusion of mobile telecommunications services in 20 countries from different regions around the world is examined for the period of 1981 to 2010 with special emphasis on Turkey, in order to address the uncertainty in optimal model selection. The Gompertz, logistic and Bass models are fitted to the observed data of mobile phone penetration by means of nonlinear least squares. The fitness accuracies of the models are evaluated based on root mean square error (RMSE). Empirical results show that S-shaped growth models are capable of explaining the diffusion of mobile telecommunications services. The findings also suggest that there is no superior model in defining the diffusion process and the most suitable model is country dependent. Finally, we observe that the diffusion in late entrant countries appears to be faster than pioneer countries and peak demands in mobile telephones occur during the period of 1999 to 2006, which suggests a remarkable multinational learning effect and significance of the transition into digital technology.

Abstract:
The development of Internet applications, as well as new technologies to provide Internet access to users, has caused a massive increase in the amount of data traffic in networks and the need of cost-efficient solutions for various networks. This motivated the development of such technologies as Internet Protocol (IP) and Ethernet. Ethernet originally aimed to serve the needs of Local Area Networks. The deployment of Ethernet in metropolitan area networks worldwide (also known as Carrier Ethernet) has made it both a competitive and preferable technology in comparison to technologies such as SONET/SDH and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). This thesis research investigates the requirement of various stakeholders to Carrier Ethernet technology. The following stakeholders were identified during the research: customers, standardization bodies, vendors, and providers. Each stakeholder was closely investigated and its needs, requirements and interconnection with other target groups were analysed and gathered into one communication map called Carrier Ethernet eco-system. Moreover this thesis identifies more specific recommendations to each stakeholder that could improve the development of Carrier Ethernet technology in general and ensure the satisfaction of the customer and leave more space for future innovation.<br>Internettillämpningars utveckling har framkallat en massiv ökning av datatrafiken i näten och dess krav har drivit fram införande av Internet Protocol (IP) och Ethernet-teknologi i globala nätverk. Abstract:
The telecommunications industry is being shaped by technological and market developments, and is moving into the 21st Century. The telecommunications technology of the future is integrated services digital networks. ISDN, which is the concept for a future digital telecommunications network for delivery of a wide range of innovative voice, data and video services through satellite systems and the national information highways being developed in several countries, will lead to a Global Information Infrastructure. ISDN development will pose challenges to traditional telecommunications regulation, lead to increased multimodal competition between ground and space-based transmission systems, and erode INTELSAT's market base since future digital ISDN systems will be interchangeable with satellite systems.<br>This study begins in Chapter I with an examination of the emerging technologies and recent market trends which challenge traditional regulation, as well as the importance of upholding regulation in the emerging ISDN telecommunications environment. Chapter II discusses the recent market developments in Canada, the legal implications of emerging technologies for the current regulatory regime, and the need for comprehensive policy and regulation. Chapter III discusses the role of satellites in the emerging global ISDN environment, the mandate of INTELSAT in terms of spectrum/orbit resource management, the regulation of multimodal telecommunications under the INTELSAT Agreement, the challenges to INTELSAT represented by ISDN development, the role of the ITU in the regulation of the emerging global ISDN environment, and the future of INTELSAT in light of competition, technological progress, and regulatory trends. This is followed by a conclusion in Chapter IV.

Abstract:
High stability of telecommunication services has a positive e ect on customer satisfaction and thus helps to maintain competitiveness of the product in telecommunication market. Since live migration provides a minimal down- time of virtual machines, it is deployed by telecommunication companies to ensure high availability of services and to prevent service interruptions. The main objective of this research is to assess the performance of various hypervisors in terms of live migration and determine which of them best meets the criteria given by a telecommunication company. Response time and CPU utilization of telecommunication services are measured in non- virtualized and virtualized environments to better understand the impacts of virtualization on the services. Two hypervisors, i.e. KVM and XEN, are used to grasp their characteristic behaviour of handling the services. Furthermore, performance of live migration is assessed for both hypervisors using miscellaneous test cases to identify which one has the best overall performance in terms of downtime and total migration time.

Van, Wyk Byron Jay. "E-trust: a building block for developing valuable online platforms in Higher Education." Thesis, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/1852.

Abstract:
Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Technology Design in the Faculty of Informatics and Design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology Supervisor: Prof J Messeter Cape Town, 2013<br>The aim of this research project was to provide an answer to the question: “How can an understanding of online trust be used to build valuable online applications in Higher Education?” In order to present an answer to this question, a literature survey was conducted to establish: • An understanding of the phenomenon of online trust • What the factors are that influence a loss of trust in the online environment The literature survey highlighted several factors that influence a loss of trust in the online environment, called trust cues. These factors, however, were often tested within the E-commerce environment, and not in organization-specific contexts, such as online platforms in use in Higher Education. In order to determine whether or not these factors would influence the development of trust in context-specific environments, the author of this research grouped the indentified trust factors into three focus areas, i.e. content, ease of use, and navigation. These factors were then incorporated into a series of nine different prototypes. These prototypes were different versions of a particular online platform currently in use at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). The prototypes were tested over a three week period, with certain staff members at the institution in question recruited as test participants. During each week of user observations, a different focus area was targeted, in order to establish the impact that it would have on the perceived trustworthiness of the platform in question. User observations were conducted while test participants completed a standard process using the various prototypes. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted while participants completed the specific process. Participants were asked to evaluate each screen in the process according to its perceived trust worthiness, by assigning a trust level score. At the completion of the three rounds of user observations, in-depth interviews were conducted with test participants. The participants’ trust level scores for each prototype were captured and graphed. A detailed description for the score given for a particular screen was presented on each graph. These scores were combined to provide an analysis of the focus area tested during the specific round. After the three rounds of user observations were completed, an analysis of all the trust factors tested were done. Data captured during interviews were transcribed, combined with feedback received from questionnaires, and analysed. An interpretation of the results showed that not all trust factors had a similar influence in the development of trust in the online platform under investigation. Trust cues such as content organization, clear instructions and useful content were by far the most significant trust factors, while others such as good visual design elements, professional images of products, and freedom from grammatical and typographical errors had little or no impact in the overall trustworthiness of the platform under investigation. From the analysis done it was clear that the development of trust in organization-specific contexts is significantly different than developing trust in an E-commerce environment and that factors that influence the development of trust in one context might not always be significant in another. In conclusion, it is recommended that when software applications are developed in organization-specific contexts, such as Higher Education, that trust factors such as good content organization, clear instructions and useful content be considered as the most salient. Organization-specific contexts differ quite significantly in that the users of these systems often convey a certain degree of trust toward the online platforms that they work with on a daily basis. Trust factors that are geared toward developing an initial or basic trust in a particular platform, which is often the case with first time users engaging in an E-commerce platform, would therefore not be as significant in the development of a more developed level of trust, which is what is needed within the development of organization-specific online platforms.
