Economies of scale, globalization and mass production have pushed the scale of manufacturing processes and the ability to compete beyond the scope of most small and medium enterprises. With the affordability of standard, off-the-shelf industrial and computer numerical control components, software and allied tools, we investigate a systematic model that looks at a number of possible ways of downscaling machines and operations that are of particular relevance to small and medium enterprises. The concepts presented here specifically deal with understanding dependencies and scale factors in comple

Robotics is an emerging field, and it is also affecting several other fields. Design of robotic platforms gains more importance since the focus and aim of the robotics research broadens widely and the variety of the users is significant. This work aims to present the design of a modular mobile robotic platform, which should be simple, easy to build and easy to use. The concept of modularity, usage of off-the shelf components and utilizing a PC platform, are addressed in this work. As a result of this work, a conceptual design is presented, and a prototype is built to highlight some important a

The safety concern of aging aircraft is a rising issue in terms of both safety and cost. An aircraft structure failure during flight is unacceptable. A method needs to be developed and standardized to test the integrity of both commercial and military aircrafts. The current method to test the structure of an aircraft requires the aircraft to be taken out of service for inspection; this is costly due to the inspection required to be performed and the lost use from downtime. A novice idea of an on-site structural health monitoring (SHM) system has been proposed to test the integrity of aircr

Little has been published about the shelf circulation off the coast of Nigeria. Due to increased activity and associated incidents in the shallow waters offshore Nigeria, there is a need to more clearly define the near-shore circulation patterns. An oil spill occurred in January of 1998, the slick drifted in the opposite direction at twice the speed as was anticipated. It was believed that the heavy discharge from the Niger River Delta would have a strong influence on the near-shore circulation patterns and was the reason for this unexpected drift.
