Abstract:
With the increasing number of elderly individuals in the Portuguese population and the consequent rise in cognitive decline associated with normal aging, there is a growing need to invest in mental health. This investment can be realized through the promotion of active aging and cognitive stimulation. Developing interactive tools that provide stimulation and motivation for everyday activities proves to be an effective strategy in slowing down cognitive decline. These tools aim to simulate familiar everyday scenarios for end-users, thereby encouraging regular use. This project focuses on the de

Abstract:
Nuclear power plants contain hundreds of kilometers of electrical cables including cables used for power, for instrumentation, and for control. It is essential that safety-related cable systems continue to perform following a design-basis event. Wholesale replacement of electrical cables in existing plants facing licensing period renewal may be both impractical and cost-prohibitive. It is therefore important to understand the long term aging of cable materials to have confidence that aged cables will perform when needed. It is equally important in support of cable aging management to develop m

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Packaging Certification Program (PCP), Office of Packaging and Transportation, Office of Environmental Management, has sponsored a suite of training courses that are conducted annually by Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) in support of safety and security of nuclear and other radioactive material packages. One of these courses conducted by Argonne since 2000 is the Application of the ASME Code to Radioactive Material Transportation Packaging, which was expanded significantly in 2014 to include dry storage casks, resulting in a change in course title to t

A temperature-monitoring system based on radiofrequency identification (RFID) has been developed for extending the maintenance period of the nuclear material packaging for storage and transportation. The system consists of tags, readers, and application software. The tag, equipped with a temperature sensor, is attached to the exterior of a package. The application software enables remote reading, via radio waves, of the temperature from the sensor in the tag. The system reports any temperature violations immediately via e-mail or text message, and/or posts the alarm on a secure website. The sy

Abstract:
License renewal of operating nuclear power plants in the United States has become one of the most successful nuclear industry activities in the past few years. Entergy, the second largest nuclear plant operator in the U.S., was one of the pioneers in this new process. In 2000, Entergy submitted a license renewal application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 1. By June 2001, less than 17 months later, the NRC issued a renewed license. Due in part to the efficiency and success of this first Entergy license renewal project, a dedicated team of Entergy and A
