Abstract:
Purpose – Business Intelligence (BI) is the company's ability, through the use of technologies and methods, to transform data from external and internal environments into information to improve performance. Capture, management and transformation can be understood as processes and these can present problems and need for improvement. This article presents a case of applying Lean Office in a BI process in a service large company. The goal is to identify BI process-related waste and propose improvements through Lean Office tools and principles. Methodology – The research was developed through a case study. Three data collection instruments were used: participant observation, document analysis and documented interviews. The analyzes were conducted based on the data collected and tools identified in the literature were applied that helped in conducting the analysis of the information transformation process. Findings - The article presented two main results, the detailed presentation of BI activities that are little explored in the literature, especially in developing countries, and the contribution of Lean Office's philosophy and tools for improving the management of a BI process. Originality/value – It contributes to a better understanding and creation of a common vision about the BI process between researchers and practitioners, and with a case that exemplifies the potential of the Lean Office to identify waste, analyze causes and improve the performance of this process. Keywords - Business intelligence. Business analytics. Process improvement. Lean Office.

Abstract:
The study was aimed to find out whether or not the emotional intelligence, communication, and working environment individually have a significant effect to the work performance of the civil servants. The respondents in the study were all the state servants working in three public service offices, including the Office of Integrated Investement and Business Permits, the Vehicle-Tax Payment Office (Samsat), and the Office of Population and Civil Administration. The sampling method was a saturated sampling. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. Based on the result of analysis, it could be concluded that the variables of emotional intelligence, and working environment individually have no significant effect to the work performance of the employees. One variable having a significant effect on the work performance among the civil servants is the communication. However, the three variables simultenaously have significant effects to their performance. From the findings, it is suggested that the offices should explore more deeply the emotional intelligence, communication, and the working environment to improve their staffs. Keywords: emotional intelligence, communication, working environment, work performance.

Abstract This paper will focus on the issue of designating artificial intelligence systems as inventors in the current framework of European patent law. Most recently, the European Patent Office rejected two patent applications which indicated a machine called DABUS as the inventor of the claimed subject-matter. The paper will analyse the grounds of the decisions in detail, thereby reflecting on the current approach of the European Patent Office to such designations and on the concept of inventorship within the European patent system in general.

Abstract:
Abstract Glare is a common local visual discomfort that is difficult to identify with conventional light sensors. This article presents an artificial intelligence algorithm that detects subjective local glare discomfort from the image analysis of the video footage of an office occupant’s face. The occupant’s face is directly used as a visual comfort sensor. Results show that it can recognize glare discomfort with around 90% accuracy. This algorithm can thus be at the basis of an efficient feedback control system to regulate shading devices in an office building.

Abstract:
This study researches whether potential indicators of auditor dependence will affect the negative relationship between audit office size and audit quality in growing audit offices. I consider high market concentration and the low average number of public clients available to auditors in a city as indicators of dependency, and an auditor being a market specialist as an indicator of independency. Although the majority of my tests proved inconclusive, I do find some evidence indicating that there may be more to the growth effect than workload balancing. I provide some evidence supporting the hypothesis that the growth effect would be weaker (stronger) when there are more (fewer) potential clients in a local audit market.

History
Ph.D.
The legacy of the wartime Office of Strategic Services (OSS) as the forerunner of the post-war Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is well chronicled. However, the professional path of those involved in covert American Intelligence special operations has been almost completely neglected. Popular writers have focused on OSS heroics while CIA-insiders have meticulously detailed the bureaucratic struggles fought by the OSS in Washington, D.C. The special skills and organization developed by the OSS were unlike any ever before utilized by an American institution. The OSS built an organizational and operational capability that sought to take advantage of resistance in German-occupied territory through the collection of secret intelligence and special operations supporting resistance groups. To accomplish this, the OSS established and utilized inventive new methods of recruitment, training, and operations to lay the groundwork for the new professional path of the American Intelligence officer. An analysis of OSS field operations in the Mediterranean Theater during the Second World War yields the best insight into this nascent professionalism as it grew from ideas into reality. The OSS developed its own definition of intelligence while grappling with incorporating old and new standards of professional behavior into the organization and among its members. Covert training and recruitment materials generously provided by British agents such as William Stephenson gave the OSS the jump start it needed to begin to forge a new path in subversive operations. British covert intelligence embodied traditional field craft, but OSS members would be the missionaries of a new uniquely American specialized covert operations working for American interests in conjunction with partisans in enemy-controlled territory. OSS members hailed from a wide-variety of American business, military, academic, and civilian backgrounds, bringing with them new ideas and old conceptions of what it meant to be a professional. While ultimately unsuccessful in maintaining its existence after the war, the OSS established a new path forward for American Intelligence which recognized the groundbreaking work done by the OSS and incorporated many facets of that into the new CIA.

Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The intelligence community throughout the world is still reeling after several intelligence failures. Proposals to improve Intelligence Analysis have had little impact as analysts, their managers and their organisations continue to cling to outdated threat perceptions, methodologies and organisational structures and cultures. This thesis looks through the lens of Knowledge Management at the various challenges that the Intelligence Analysis practice is faced with in the Knowledge Age. Firstly, theories and concepts from Intelligence Analysis are challenged when compared with those in Knowledge Management and the possibility of applying new vocabularies in intelligence is discussed. The second challenge intelligence analysts face is to understand and adapt to the changed world with its connected, non-linear and rapidly enfolding events and patterns which broadens their scope to a multi-faceted, complex and multi-disciplinary threat picture. The third challenge is to re-look the existing analytical methodologies, tools and techniques, realising that these are most probably inadequate in a complex environment. The fourth challenge Intelligence Analysis faces is to reach out to other disciplines and assess how new analytical techniques, both intuitive and structured, as well as cognitive models, collaborative and organisational structure concepts from within the Knowledge Management discipline can improve Intelligence Analysis’ grasp of the Knowledge Age. In conclusion, it is argued that intelligence analysts might be ready to reinvent themselves to address Knowledge Age issues, but that intelligence organisations are not able to support a new intelligence paradigm while still clinging to threat perceptions and structures befitting the Cold War.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes variations in office rents in Ankara. The theoretical background of this study is related to the hedonic methodology, which is extensively applied for explaining price or rental price variations of the real property. Given this theoretical framework, hedonic regression model is utilized for the estimation of hedonic price indices by using the cross sectional data of the office market in Ankara for the year 2002. Hedonic price function is specified in the log linear functional form and is estimated with the Ordinary Least Squares technique for two models. The models include the same variables
however, Model 1 differs from Model 2 in including the location variables. The estimation results obtained from the models suggest that height and construction quality of the building act as proxies for the locational characteristics. Also, it is found from Model 1 that locational characteristics have the greatest effect on the rental prices of the office units. In order to verify this fact, Model 1 is tested against Model 2 and vice versa based on alternative tests for non-nested models. The results of non-nested tests indicate that Model 1 is preferred to Model 2. This result is important in the sense that locational characteristics are found to be significant in explaining the rental price variations. Besides location variables, the other variables related to physical attributes and lease characteristics of the office property are also evaluated from the estimation results of Model 1. From the empirical results, it is finally concluded that locational characteristics explain the spatial rent variations of the office property in Ankara to a large extent.

Abstract:
A knowledge based way of preparing documents tools in an organization within an activities such as document preparation that are supported by a knowledge based system. Software called REGENT (Report Generation Tool) works in an environment that generates documents from the reusable document pieces during planning, execution and monitoring the document preparation process in a firm or organizational environment. The documents are built from stored document pieces by using artificial intelligence methods. A system architecture was developed to enable the document generation process to take place within a widen office automation standard. The report preparation process knowledge is captured in form of representing a knowledge based scheme. An artificial intelligence problem solving strategy was developed to take care of reasoning steps when document pieces were being configured. The REGENT environment is normally working when preparing a recurrent report types such as annual reports preparation. Keywords: Knowledge based approach, artificial intelligence, document preparation, office automation, document analysis, document standardization.

Full text
Abstract:
Glare assessments are currently made from High Dynamic Range (HDR) images taken from the Point Of View (POV) and viewing direction of a user. This paper analyses the feasibility to estimate the Daylight Glare Probability (DGP) at the user-level based on machine-learning techniques, sun position and a downward-pointing camera sensor mounted at the ceiling of a simulated office environment. Three different office cases have been considered: an empty room, an empty room with venetian blinds and a furnished room without venetian blinds. The influence of the sun direction has been considered as a parameter to predict the observer DGP. Subsequently, the best parameters have been selected to build a black box model using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Results show that, by using the DGP of the ceiling camera and the sun position, it is possible to accurately predict the DGP for an observer’s POV.

Abstract:
Advances in artificial intelligence and data analytics have unlocked new opportunities for progress in critical areas within the maritime domain. Over the past year, the U.S. Navy has initiated an Operator Decision Aid pilot project to apply rules-based navigation algorithms developed by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and Office of Naval Research (ONR) to provide real-time recommendations to watch-standing teams on the Bridge and in the Combat Information Center. Recognizing the complexity inherent in the employment of artificial intelligence-based solutions, this paper will apply a multifactor framework developed by Crawford and Pollack (2004) to evaluate influential aspects of the project required to drive change, embrace complexity, and institute a culture of learning.

In ASME 2014 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2014-39339.

Full text
Abstract:
This study presents performance of two ARX (auto-regressive with exogenous, i.e., external, inputs) building hourly thermal load prediction models under influence of climate change. ARX building thermal load prediction models are of particular interest not only for their higher prediction accuracy but also for computational efficiency. Precise thermal load prediction is a significant aspect of energy planning for mixed energy distribution systems in regional and national level as well as in intelligent building energy management and control. However, in order to ensure reliability, prediction models should be able to account for influence from climate change in the upcoming years. Performance and robustness of the models over five consecutive years have been evaluated. A case study with medium office reference building in Atlanta, GA has been carried out to demonstrate prediction accuracy of both models over the period utilizing a widely accepted building energy simulation software. Results have been evaluated using statistical criteria to quantify the effect of climate change on prediction accuracy.
